Europa: We deserve to face Man Utd in final – Emery

Villarreal coach Unai Emery was delighted with their 0-0 at Arsenal as they reach the Europa League final.

The stalemate sees the Yellow Submarine reach the final 2-1 on aggregate.

Emery said, “We are very proud because Arsenal are a very good team and we worked tonight, as well as in the first leg, and deserved to go through. We made a very serious match, my players constantly helping each other.

“We worked hard today, defended really well.

“Then sometimes we controlled parts of the match with possession. The best chances to score… I’d admit Arsenal had. I know it’s going to be difficult against United but today we enjoy the moment. We deserve to play them and we will show our supporters our best performance.”

Villarreal will meet Manchester United in the final in Gdansk on May 26.

Arteta must not start Xhaka against Villarreal – Ian Wright

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged Mikel Arteta not to start Granit Xhaka at left-back against Villarreal in the Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday.

The Swiss midfielder filled in at left-back in the first-leg, which Arsenal lost 2-1.

“Ideally for me, you play Cedric Soares at left-back and put Xhaka back in midfield because he can keep the ball safe and give that pass that we need,” Wright told Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast.

“It does not make me comfortable seeing Xhaka at left-back. It’s not his thing, that’s not where he should be.

“Cedric was bought and signed for four years to play at either right or left, play him! Play Xhaka where he should play and then it’s out of Saka or Pepe to be on that side.”

Wright added: “Go with the strongest team. [Dani] Ceballos doesn’t make my team, I would rather have Mohamed Elneny in there.

“I know he scored the other day but he’s got a drive and a determination about him. You cannot dislike his output.”

Europa: Villarreal gain narrow edge in chaotic win over Arsenal

Villarreal claimed a narrow advantage in their 2020/2021 Europa League semi-final match-up with Arsenal after a 2-1 home victory in the first leg on Thursday.

However, they may by now be rueing letting the London club off the hook.

It looked like being a joyous night for Villarreal manager Unai Emery against the club which sacked him in 2019 as his side reached half-time with a 2-0 lead.

It was all thanks to goals by Manu Trigueros and Raul Albiol.

And when Arsenal had Dani Ceballos sent off just before the hour mark it looked bleak for the visitors.

Arsenal were rocking and needed goalkeeper Bernd Leno to avoid them slipping further behind but they were thrown a lifeline when Nicolas Pepe converted a 73rd minute penalty kick.

A chaotic game took another twist as Villarreal were also reduced to 10 men when former Tottenham Hotspur player Etienne Capoue received a second yellow card.

Villarreal, coached by a Europe League specialist in Unai Emery, maintained their 100 percent home record in the competition this season.

But it was a bittersweet night for the La Liga side with the tie delicately balanced ahead of next week’s return.

Emery won three successive Europa League titles with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016 and his Villarreal side have remained unbeaten in the competition this season.

They enjoyed a dream start as defender Juan Foyth surged forward in the fifth minute and played in Samuel Chukwueze on the right.

His ball in fell for Trigueros who lashed an unstoppable low drive into the bottom corner.

Veteran Albiol made it 2-0 on the half hour mark when a corner-kick was flicked on and he arrived unmarked at the far post to volley high past Leno from close range.

Arsenal thought they had a route back into the game shortly afterwards when Foyth tripped Pepe in the area.

A penalty kick was initially awarded but a VAR check showed that Pepe had handled the ball earlier in the build-up.

Mikel Arteta’s side pressed early in the second half but their momentum was halted when Ceballos caught Daniel Parejo on the foot and was shown a second yellow card.

Emery’s side went for the jugular and Arsenal were indebted to Leno for a great save which prevented Gerard Moreno making it 3-0.

The complexion of the tie changed, however, when Bukayo Saka drew a foul in the penalty box and Pepe drilled his kick straight down the middle to halve the deficit.

Capoue’s evening came to an undignified end as he injured himself with a wild tackle on Saka and was shown a second yellow card while being taken off on a stretcher.

There was still time for substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to miss a chance to make it 2-2 but after what looked like a dreadful position, Arsenal’s season remains alive.

“We didn’t want to come here and lose but after the way the game developed, you have to take the result,” Arteta said. “If you have to lose it is probably the best result we could have.

“I am confident we have a chance to win.”

Manchester United crushed AS Roma 6-2 in the first leg game of the other semi-final pairing.

We’re not scared of Arsenal – Chukwueze

Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze says he isn’t scared of Arsenal ahead of tonight’s Europa League semi-final first leg.

The Nigerian admits he dreams of Euro glory.

LaLiga ambassador Chukwueze, speaking at an event for LiveScore, said: “When the time comes, it will be up to the coach and the tactics he chooses – all I need to do is just enter the field using the skills I have practiced and give everything I have.

“We are going to play our football as normal. We are not scared or anything, we are just going to play our football as a team.

“I’d like you to tell me that I am going to win the Europa League, just tell me that! I want to win the Europa League, thanks!”

  • My past at Arsenal is less important – Emery

My past at Arsenal is less important – Emery

Villarreal manager Unai Emery insists his past at Arsenal is not important.

Emery spent 18 months at the Gunners before being sacked in December 2018.

The Spaniard will meet his former side in the Europa League semi-finals after the two sides won their quarter-finals on Thursday.

“We are happy. It was a challenge, but the trajectory in the Europa League is being very serious and we are responding at a higher level every time,” Emery said.

“We have taken the game where we feel more comfortable. We have [managed] it both here and in Zagreb.

“It is a challenge, something that Villarreal has already done. Breaking the barrier of the semi-finals is the great challenge. The idea of reaching the Champions League through the Europa League is very important.

“When I signed here this was [part of the process]. You have to live each moment. We are receiving people’s dream. The dream increases. My past at Arsenal is less important.”

Samuel Chukwueze breaks Villarreal appearance record

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has become Villarreal’s youngest-ever footballer to feature in 100 games.

Chukwueze reached this hallowed rank having starred in the Yellow Submarine’s 4-1 defeat of Zamora in Tuesday’s Copa del Rey encounter.

At 21 years, seven months and 11 days, he eclipsed the record set by Argentina international and AC Milan centre back Mateo Musacchio who reached the centenary mark aged 21 years, 11 months and 20 days.

“A record-making centenarian. Samuel Chukwueze has reached 100 games with Villarreal’s first team after starting the Copa del Rey game against Zamora CF,” wrote the LaLiga side in a statement.

“The Nigerian forward has reached the 100-game mark (79 in LaLiga, 13 in the Europa League and eight in the Copa del Rey), aged just 21 years, seven months and 11 days, becoming the youngest player to reach this mark in official games for the Villarreal CF first team.”

La Liga: Villarreal sacks manager after 50 days in charge

Struggling Villarreal have sacked coach Luis Garcia after just 50 days in charge and turned to Javi Calleja, the man they axed in December.

Under Calleja, the club finished fifth last season and reached the knockout rounds of the Europa League. He was sacked with Villarreal 17th in La Liga with just three victories in their first 15 league matches this season.

According to SkySports, Luis Garcia took over on December 10 and won his first match three days later as Villarreal beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 at home to clinch first place in their Europa League group. But he followed that with a run of eight matches without a victory.

The Yellow Submarine have sunk to second-bottom of La Liga, drawing four and losing two of their league games under Luis Garcia. They were also eliminated by Espanyol over two legs in the Copa del Rey.

“The decision I have made is to rehire the coach we had at the beginning, called Javier Calleja, who will take over the squad from tomorrow for the rest of the season,” Villarreal president Fernando Roig told a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Villarreal needed “a person with knowledge of the staff and knowledge of the current situation of the club”, Roig added.

He said that Calleja would give the club “the possibility of first-division football next season”, adding that the returning coach must save the club without the benefit of any new signings in the January transfer window.

“It is going to be very difficult,” Roig said.

Villarreal host Espanyol on Sunday and face Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League last-32 first leg on February 14.

  • Madrid frustrated by Villarreal as Cazorla strikes twice

Madrid frustrated by Villarreal as Cazorla strikes twice

Santi Cazorla proved his class as he scored twice for Villarreal to deny Real Madrid a chance to make further inroads on La Liga leaders Barcelona.

The visitors, who made a pre-Christmas trip to the Club World Cup, looked tired and faced a rejuvenated Cazorla, who has suffered a long injury lay-off.

His curler earned an early lead before Karim Benzema’s header made it 1-1.

Raphael Varane nodded in to put Real ahead, but Cazorla’s late header moved Villarreal out of the relegation zone.

Santi Solari’s Real remain fourth, seven points behind Barcelona, four behind second-placed Athletico Madrid and two behind third-placed Sevilla.

Real’s night was not improved by Gareth Bale being substituted at half-time with what appeared to be a calf injury.

And they were made to pay by a Villarreal team, who merited at least a point for their superior attacking endeavour and had a midfielder who showed why he was so revered while at former club Arsenal.

Cazorla returns to field after two years out with injury

Santi Cazorla says he is “eternally grateful” for the help he has received after playing his first match for nearly two years and bringing his injury nightmare to an end.

The 33-year-old midfielder’s last appearance came in October 2016 for Arsenal in the Champions League against Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

He then suffered a serious Achilles injury, which kept him out of action for 21 months.

Cazorla’s spell on the sidelines was ended on Tuesday, though, when he came on as a substitute for Villarreal in their pre-season friendly against Hercules.

Following the match – which ended in a 1-1 draw – Cazorla posted on Instagram, saying: “Very happy to go back to do what I like most.

“There is a lot of work ahead of me but it is the first step. Eternally grateful to the people. It has been worth it to get here THANK YOU.”

Cazorla bought his six year spell at Arsenal to an end when his contract at the Emirates expired this summer.

He opted to move back to Spain with Villarreal for a third spell with the club that he originally joined as a teenager in 2003.

  • Andres Iniesta gets unique farewell gift from Villarreal

Andres Iniesta was presented with a unique leaving gift ahead of Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Villarreal on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old was given a miniature yellow submarine by Villarreal, whose nickname is “The Yellow Submarine”.

The club had tweeted before the game to say they were presenting Iniesta with the memento to “pay tribute to his career and his values as an athlete” as he prepares to leave Barca in the summer.

Villarreal also did what Real Madrid did not do in El Clasico as they gave the La Liga champions a guard of honour.

Barcelona eased to victory in the match to move two games away from becoming the first side to complete an unbeaten 38-game season in La Liga.

“We’re very pleased with the match,” said Iniesta. “We still have the goal of completing the season unbeaten. That would be very special.

“In sport you are looking for motivations. We don’t want to drop our guard because we have a very nice target, to be unbeaten.”

Barcelona finish their season with a trip to Levante on Sunday and then a home game against Real Sociedad.
