Obiano arrest: Anambra women send strong warning to EFCC

Anambra women under the aegis of Anambra-North Women Empowerment Movement have sent a strong warning to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), threatening to go naked at the national headquarters of the Commission if former Governor Willie Obiano is not released from detention immediately.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Chairperson of the group, Mrs Uju Ifunanya Edochie gave the warning on Monday in a statement released to journalists, while also condemning an online video showing Obiano drinking water in the EFCC custody.

The Anambra women accused the antigraft agency displaying “unruly acts”, stressing that “the EFCC facility is not safe, if they could humiliate an ex-governor, made a video of him in their supposed protective custody and sent to social media for the public to mock”.

The statement reads: “The Anambra-North Women Empowerment Movement hereby issue stern admonitions to EFCC for its reckless and unprofessional behaviour towards handling the case of the Obiano.

“We the women of the state strongly condemn the vile trending online video clip of Obiano while in EFCC custody. It is quite obvious that the particular video was taken without his knowledge nor consent and as such, this premeditated brouhaha by the EFCC seems to veer into a caricature and witch-hunting which is a mockery of Nigeria’s judicial due process.

“The former governor was one of the leading performing governors in Nigeria, as he had profound achievements in agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, commerce and trade, security, employment rate, civil service as well as state economy.

“Anambra ranked lowest in poverty index, the unemployment rate dropped drastically, three jumbo rice mills were established in different parts of the state, 17 iconic bridges and flyovers were constructed with numerous standard roads throughout the state, functional street and traffic lights were mounted on all roads, built the first Anambra Airport and so on”.

The group threatened to “protest at EFCC Abuja office naked if EFCC doesn’t release urgently” the ex-governor.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement that the Command after carefully studying the video, noticed that the originators of the video distorted the fact and raised false alarm.

“This was in order to cause confusion and create fears in the minds of the general public for reasons best known to the originators or sponsors as the case may be.

“The command wishes to set the record straight that on Monday, April 26, at about 09:30am, the Divisional Police Officer in Maroko, Lagos State, was informed that some okada riders were on rampage by resisting the police from impounding their motorcycles at Lekki Phase 1 Gate.

  • FRSC reacts to viral video involving personnel in Edo

FRSC reacts to viral video involving personnel in Edo

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the prosecution of a tricycle operator that attacked its personnel and vehicle in Edo.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO) Mr Bisi Kazeem disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Recall that a video of public harassment of FRSC personnel and damage to FRSC patrol vehicle by tricycle operator in Benin, Edo State had gone viral.

Oyeyemi noted that offenders who take undue advantage of unarmed personnel would not be spared any longer.

He noted with dismay the “unruly, defiant and rebellious attack“ that resulted into an unprecedented degree of damage to FRSC personnel by a tricycle operator in Benin, Edo State

“The tricycle rider who was arrested in Benin, along Benin/Sapele road for driving against traffic, went berserk at the point of arrest.

“He stripped himself naked, and started throwing obstacles on both personnel and the patrol vehicle while at some point, even dragged the patrol operatives in uniform.

“During the attack, the man tore the staff’s uniform and not only damaged the windscreen of the patrol car, but disfigured the bonnet and other body parts with mud and stone, ” he said.

Oyeyemi however, registered his displeasure at the incessant abuse of the personnel and damage to property across FRSC formations nationwide by unruly people.

“After going through the viral video, the Corps wonders why a section of the motoring public has continued to abuse unarmed personnel whose only fault is to ensure the safety of lives and property on the road

“The Corps has therefore resolved never to condone such barbaric acts and damage to either its personnel or patrol vehicles any longer.

“The Corps is prepared to use this case to serve as a deterrent to others who are fond of molesting law enforcement agents.

“It is also disheartening that a section of the motoring public could criticize the Corps personnel who in self defence, applied some commensurate force on the criminal in question.

“This was in order to restrain him from further attack on the unarmed personnel and damage to the patrol vehicle, ” he said.

The FRSC boss warned the motoring public to desist from attacking the Corps, noting that the FRSC was civil in nature and discouraged physical attack on offenders.

This he said, does not mean members of the Corps should watch and allow physical damage on its property and personnel in the course of their legitimate duty.

He commended the patriotic citizens that assisted in arresting the criminal and condemned his actions, adding that it shows that some Nigerians would always stand by the truth.

The Corps Marshal reminded members of the public that law enforcement agents serve the common interest of the general public and deserve to be respected in the course of their duty.

IGP reacts to viral video of ‘policeman’ standing on civilian’s neck

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has disowned a trending video where a man dressed as a policeman is seen stamping on the neck of a civilian.

In the video credited to @NigeriaDream, the policeman, dressed in a blue shirt and black trousers, is seen standing on the back of the civilian lying on his stomach on the road with one leg pressing down his neck.

Adamu, in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, DCP Frank Mba, on Monday, said fact-checking on the video showed it was not in Nigeria.

He said: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a viral video credited to “@NigeriaDream”, showing a security officer meting out inhuman treatment to a man in clear violation of his rights, dignity and freedom.

“In the video, the security officer was seen stamping his feet on the neck and head of a man lying helplessly on the floor. The Force condemns the act.

“It has however painstakingly fact-checked and examined the video and hereby states that the incident did not take place anywhere or at any time in Nigeria.

“A critical look at the video indicates that – the vehicles on the scene are neither common vehicles used in Nigeria nor are the number plates of Nigerian pattern; Although the man in uniform looks like a private security guard that can be found anywhere, he is certainly not a personnel of the Nigeria Police Force. Also, the background language in the video is not any of the known Nigerian languages.

“Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni calls on citizens to discountenance the video as a clear mischief ostensibly orchestrated to stir up ill-feelings towards security agencies in Nigeria. He assures of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to always respect and uphold the rights of the citizenry.”
