  • A visit to Liberia and Memories of a Civil War – Hope Eghagha

    Hope O’Rukevbe Eghagha

From Wednesday October 27 through Friday October 29, we were in Liberia under the auspices of African Children’s Talent Discovery Foundation (ACTDF), founded and led by Engineer Noah Dallaji the Nigerian philanthropic businessman cum politician whose large heart for humanity and compassion for the less privileged is uncommon. Comprising about thirty Nigerians drawn from the business community, entertainment, education, agriculture, sport (basketball and football) power generation and the media, the group was hosted by the Vice President of Liberia, Her Excellency Chief Dr Jewel Howard-Taylor. It was a whirlwind working and interactive tour of Monrovia in pursuance, in furtherance and deepening of Noah Dallaji’s pan-African dream for the development of the African continent by Africans.

The visit also afforded us the opportunity to witness a country that went through the carnage of war for fourteen years and self-destruction over issues which could have been amicably and peacefully resolved before it snowballed into a conflagration that consumed thousands of lives and gulped over ten billion dollars from the Nigerian treasury. Liberia is yet to recover from the consequences of war. Power generation and supply are nearly non-existent. Infrastructure is poor. Over 90% of all items in the stores and shops, including food items) in the country are imported. Liberia has a population of five million and a massive land mass of 111,369 square kilometres (43,000 square miles). Liberia is rich in mineral resources including gold, diamond, iron ore, manganese, bauxite, uranium, zinc, and lead deposits. With these resources and a relatively small population and fertile land for agriculture, that country ought to be a gold mine for investors. It ought to have developed into a West Africa Dubai with the citizens enjoying a high standard of living. But the reverse is the case. Driving through Monrovia, I remembered how Aba looked in 1971 in the aftermath of the civil war of 1967-1970. Those who are beating the drums of war in Nigeria should note that we may know when it starts; we may not be there to know how it will end and the consequences on our people for decades. Some eighteen years after the civil wars ended in Liberia, the war of survival is ongoing. And it is not a Tea Party!

Back to our ACTDF-sponsored mission. Her Excellency the Vice President Howard-Taylor broke all protocol in her characteristic charming, personal, and informal style and visited Dr Dallaji in the hotel early on Thursday. The previous day was for arrivals of the delegation, some members of which took off from Abuja in a flight arranged and paid for by ACTDF. The other members took off from Lagos in a commercial flight that saw delegates through Lomé and Accra. As an aside, we could not help but wail the state of Murtala Muhammed Airport as we queued up in Gnassingbe Eyadema Airport. Togo is a small country. How could they have and maintain such a beautiful airport while we tender excuses and apologies for the weeping structure called an airport in Lagos? When will Nigeria wake up? We had arrived at the Monrovia Airport and given diplomatic reception by the State. All for Dr Noah Dallaji and his dream for a united and prosperous Africa.

We visited the office of the Vice President, the National Assembly, the Senate arm is chaired by Her Excellency as President of Senate where beautiful speeches were made. Legislators recalled the role which Nigeria played in ensuring through ECOMOG that peace returned to Liberia. We glowed with pride but also wondered why Nigeria failed to take the lead in reconstruction by sending businessmen and investors. The Chinese and Lebanese are reaping the benefits of the peace in the country which was facilitated by the sweat, blood of Nigerians soldiers and funds raised by taxpayers.

There was an MOU between ACTDF and Jewel Starfish Foundation to facilitate intervention in education, entrepreneurship, and agriculture. At a visit to Joseph Jenkins Roberts High School, we inspected the First Noah Dallaji Basketball Court and engaged with the all-female Students Government leadership. It was an amazing story that came out of the encounter. The girl child has taken the challenge of inclusion seriously. They swung to the other extreme and ensured that no male student emerged as leader. I need to interrogate this further. How did it happen? Olumide Oyedeji the successful international basketball player who had plied his great skills in the American league recruited by Dallaji was on hand to give presence to the importance of basketball. The girls were assured that the basketball star would be on hand to train a strong basketball team. Later in the evening. There was a basketball match between selected sides, watched by the VP, ACTDF President and his entourage. It was a talent of skills. I learnt from watching the match that you need not be a six-footer to play basketball. Some of the ‘briefest’ guys made up their height deficit with speed and dexterity. But how will they fare if they encounter an all-giant team?

At a corporate lunch with the business community on Thursday the 28th, such personalities as Rt. Hon Friday Osanebi, Dr Kennedy Okonkwo, Obi Cubana, Kcee, his brother E Money, Investment Consultant Charly Lemasse and my humble self, engaged with representatives of government parastatals, business and entertainment. Promises were made about building a five-star hotel, developing agriculture. Later the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia HE Godfrey A.E. Odudigbo, assured the delegates that the embassy would ensure a smooth process.

At the 1862-founded University of Liberia, Dr Dallaji gave a twenty-five-minute motivational speech to students, encouraging them to dream and pursue their dreams, to avoid bad company, and to focus on education. He announced that he would make internet facilities available in the university within a short while and that an exchange programme would be started between University of Liberia and some universities in Nigeria, University of Lagos being the first shot. ACDTF also promised scholarships to deserving but indigent students to universities abroad. Those who are skilled in sport will also receive help from the Foundation. In my interaction with the Acting President of the University Dr Moses Moroe Zinnah, I was told that the university lacks lecturers in English Studies. We certainly will explore the possibility of sabbaticals in that university.

Students played a big role in our visit to the university as requested by Noah Dallaji, he being a onetime student leader. He wanted to hear from the students directly without the overbearing presence of teachers and instructors. The Masters of Ceremony were students. The interactive session which followed Dallaji’s speech was moderated by Honours student Fahnie S. Kollie and was instructive. I was impressed by the capacity of most students to speak extempore to the big issues of the day. Coping with their accent, a confluence between their indigenous languages and Americanese was a different kettle of fish.

It was a beautiful outing facilitated by ACTDF. Inter-country cooperation is vital to development. The private sector through businessmen and philanthropists can drive that process with the support of governments. It was an eyeopener. Affrica, it was reiterated by most speakers, can only be truly developed by Africans. War, big or small, local, or international should be avoided at all costs. There is usually no real victor in wars. Everyone involved in the experience, in the words of Poet JP Clark, is a casualty of war!

  • Buhari visits Imo Thursday

    Buhari visits Imo Thursday

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo, says all is set for President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state on Thursday, September 9.

The governor disclosed this while addressing newsmen at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, on Saturday.

Uzodinma, who spoke upon his return from an official trip to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, said that the President would commission some “significant projects” executed by his administration.

The governor said that he visited Abuja to “address some political matters and some critical issues that are supposed to be handled in Abuja.”

He listed the issues to include getting Federal Government’s assistance on the World Bank programmes on rural roads, ecological programmes, the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management (NEWMAP) projects and other erosion control issues.

“While in Abuja, I secured approval for President Muhammadu Buhari to visit Imo on Thursday, Sept. 9, to commission some significant projects put together by the Shared Prosperity Administration.

“More to that, Imo has been able to attract additional support from Mr President on management of some ecological problems in the state,’’ he said.

Speaking on his assignment as the Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council for the Anambra governorship election, Uzodinma acknowledged the importance of the responsibility thrust on him by the party.

The governor assured that he was doing his best to disseminate the message of what the people stand to gain should they vote in the APC in the Nov. 6 election.

He called on the people of Anambra and the South-East in general to align with the APC, adding that “those who support the party at the centre will get both their rights and their privileges”.

  • COVID-19: PTF declares Yahaya Bello’s Kogi high risk state, warns Nigerians not to visit

COVID-19: PTF declares Yahaya Bello’s Kogi high risk state, warns Nigerians not to visit

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has declared Kogi a high-risk state for refusing to acknowledge the existence of the disease.

The PTF also said that the Kogi government had failed to report testing, lacked isolation centers and therefore warned Nigerians to be weary of visiting the state.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has not hidden his disbelieve in the pandemic since in broke out in Nigeria. The governor recently in a viral video said COVID-19 vaccine is a killer.

It said having analysed the pandemic in the country, 22 high burdened Local Government Areas within 13 states in the country had been identified.

The National Incident Manager (NIM) of the PTF COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, said this on Monday in Abuja, during the PTF briefing on COVID-19.

Muhammad said: “In addition to these, we have states where data is not coming forth. If we don’t test, your data will not be analysed and if your data is not analysed, we won’t know the level of the pandemic in your state.

“Notable among the states are Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara and Kebbi and of course Kogi that has not been reporting at all.

“States that are not testing are probably at much more higher risk than the states that are currently known as high burdened states.

“A state that is not testing at all is an absolute high risk for Nigerians to visit because, there is no testing facility and even if you fall sick, there is no isolation center and they don’t even acknowledge that the disease exists. So for that reason, we put that state at the top of high risk states.”

According to Mohammed, the 22 high burdened local government areas within 13 states in the country, mostly in the cities of the state capitals contributed over 95 per cent of new cases recorded in the last six weeks.

He listed the states and local governments as Nkanu West (Enugu); Abuja Municipal (FCT); Gwagwalada FCT; Gombe (Gombe); Chikun (Kaduna); Kaduna North; Kaduna South; Nassarawa (Kano); Katsina (Katsina); Ilorin South (Kwara); Ilorin West (Kwara); Eti-Osa (Lagos); Ikeja (Lagos); Kosofe (Lagos); Lagos Mainland (Lagos); Keffi (Nasarawa); (Lafia) Nasarawa; Ibadan North (Oyo); Jos North (Plateau); Jos South (Plateau); Port-Harcourt (Rivers); and Wamako (Sokoto).

He said the PTF was working currently to provide support to various states through their task forces towards contextualising and implementing the regulation signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“As mentioned earlier, the regulation covers places of worship, public transport, banks, workplaces, sports and so on and so forth,” he said.

The notable features of the regulations include “Restrictions on gatherings, mandatory wearing of face masks in public and above all the powers of prosecution by law enforcement agencies.

“We expect governments, institutions, owners of private buildings and other regulators to enforce these regulations. For example, putting a notice of no mask no entry or no mask no service to enlighten users of their services.

“Pertinent strategies will be adopted and they will include mobile courts on strategic locations such as markets, motor parks and it is expected that every law enforcement agency will monitor complaints or their staff within which they supervise.

“We are providing advisory to the states to develop community engagement strategy and risk communication strategies to sensitise the public on compliance to these regulations and to promote behavioural changes.

“Last week, we started with the FCT, where we had a very fruitful meeting with the Minister and the stakeholders of the FCT. We are currently developing the implementation plan and the timeline for which the FCT Taskforce will commence operations all over the FCT,” he said.

  • T.B. Joshua faces fresh hurdles as churches in Israel kick against scheduled visit, evangelism

T.B. Joshua faces fresh hurdles as churches in Israel kick against scheduled visit, evangelism

These are not the best of times for Nigerian televangelist and founder of Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet T.B Joshua.

According to reports, many churches in the Israeli city of Nazareth, have kicked against the planned visit of the popular cleric.

According to an Israeli publication, Haaretz, Joshua’s planned visit has generated criticisms among residents and stakeholders, including church officials.

Joshua is scheduled to visit Nazareth ahead of his church’s event tagged the “Nazareth Meeting with TB Joshua,” holding on June 23 and June 24.

Some of the church leaders were quoted as saying the upcoming event is an “affront in the principles of Christianity”, asking residents to shun it.

“We beg you to not play in the hands of those organising this type of festival which is an affront to the principles of Christianity, and our national identity.

“We beg you not to play in the hands of those organizing this type of festival which is an affront to the principles of Christianity, and our national identity, and deals a blow to the social fabric of a city like Nazareth,” they wrote.

Church officials quoted passages from the New Testament, warning against false prophets, who seek to deceive with miracles.

The Hadash and Youth for Change parties in Nazareth were said to have also cited Joshua’s source of wealth as part of their concerns.

“We have asked to take an in-depth look at this issue, at why a city like Nazareth would receive such a person who is denied entry to many countries on grounds of criminal suspicions and given his links to the extreme right in Israel.

“What’s more, the man is known to have grown wealthy in a way that has raised many questions and therefore we view such a visit as an illegitimate step which contaminates the city and its historic heritage.

“And we absolutely reject the mayor’s claims that such an event would bring $1 million to the city and would see such a sum were it to actually materialise as an illegitimate contribution that would contaminate the city,” they reportedly said.

  • National Peace Accord: Bill Clinton cancels visit to Nigeria, gives reasons

Former United States of America’s (USA) President Bill Clinton will not be in Abuja on Wednesday for the second National Peace Accord signing ahead of the general elections.

Clinton, according to the Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar led Peace Accord committee was expected to deliver a keynote address at the event slated for the International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja.

Clinton, the committee said, was expected to hold meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar aimed at nipping threats of unrest in the bud.

But a statement by Clinton’s spokesman Angel Ureña regretted the former President’s visit might be politicised in a way that is not in line with the goals of the committee.

The statement said: “President Clinton appreciates General Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Nigerian National Peace Committee’s invitation to travel to Nigeria.

He is incredibly supportive and respectful of the committee’s efforts, of the election process, and of the work being done to try to ensure a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent outcome.

This is a crucial time in Nigeria, and President Clinton is hopeful that the election’s outcome reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

Over the course of the last several days, and after various conversations with the different stakeholders, it’s become apparent that President Clinton’s visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicized in a way that is not in line with the goals of the committee. Therefore, he will not be traveling to Abuja.

He looks forward to talking to both candidates and General Abubarkar this week.

  • Alleged fraud: Atiku reacts to FG’s plan to quiz him on return from US visit

Alleged fraud: Atiku reacts to FG’s plan to quiz him on return from US visit

The Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar on Friday reacted to plans by the federal government to question him over his alleged role in the collapse of Platinum Habib Bank also known as BankPHB.

Recall that the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed that the former Vice President has a case to answer over the collapse of the bank.

However, Atiku in return mocked the government over its alleged failed bid to get the United States government to deny him visa.

He also said that with or without a trip to the US, the PDP will dislodge the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress at next month’s election.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu said the federal government should bury its head in shame having failed to stop him from travelling to the US.

He said it was shameful that the governing APC took it upon itself to call on the authorities of another country not to grant a private citizen entry visa, which ordinarily should not be its business.

Mohammed had at the hint of the US granting Atiku visa last year, cautioned the Americans not to contemplate the gesture as it might give the impression that the foreign power is supportive of the opposition party’s candidate.

But Atiku who arrived in the US on Thursday said the APC was jittery knowing that its government has failed, stressing that Buhari’s days as president of Nigeria were numbered, which explains why members of the ruling party have been running from pillar to post.

    Details later.
