    Volleyball: Nigerian coach, Samuel Ajayi heaps praises on players despite loss to Egypt

    Samuel Ajayi, the head coach of Nigeria’s women’s senior volleyball team, on Saturday, commended his players for giving the Egyptian team a good fight despite losing 0-3 on match day four at the ongoing 2023 Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the group stage, pool A, Nigeria lost 0-3 (14-25, 17-25, 20-25) to Egypt at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports de Yaounde.

    This loss gave Nigeria two wins and two losses in the championship group game, earning 6 points.

    Ajayi said in the match against Egypt, Nigerian players performed very well despite the 0-3 loss.

    “We lost to a more experienced and tactical team. I am proud of my girls for this excellent performance,” he said.

    He said his team is determined to ensure that they win their last match against Algeria on Sunday.

    Mali beat Burundi 3-0 (25-19, 25-20,25-20) in the other pool A match on Saturday.

    Nigeria will next face Algeria on Sunday, while Egypt will hook up with Burundi the same day.

    In pool B, Burkina Faso beat Lesotho 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-19) and Rwanda defeated Uganda 3-0 (25-20,25-17,25-21).

    NAN reports that the 2023 Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship which started on Wednesday ends on Aug. 29.

    Twelve teams are participating in which Team Nigeria are in pool A with Cameroon (host), Burundi, Mali, Algeria and Egypt.

    Nigeria wins U-21 Women’s Volleyball Championship

    Nigeria has won the 2023 African U-21 Nations Women’s Volleyball Championship Zone 3 in Niamey, Niger Republic.

    Nigeria defeated Ghana 3:0 (25-10 25-15 25-10) in the finals on Sunday night to clinch the title.

    The girls had earlier eased past local rivals, Ghana in their first match of the tournament with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-8) win.

    They continued their winning run in their second match against hosts Niger, winning 3-0 (25-4, 25-11, 25-4).

    The team also swept aside Benin Republic with a dominant display in their third match, claiming a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-9) win to secure a rematch against Ghana in the final.

    Speaking after the match, Coach Rakiya Mohammed thanked God for the victory.

    “We bless God because this is the first time Nigeria is clinching trophy at the underage level. I feel so happy.

    “The Ghanaians came all out but the girls proved their worth and we have now qualified for the world championship in Thailand”.

    The team is expected to return to Nigeria later today.

    Asaba 2022: Team Kaduna male team wins gold in volleyball

    Kaduna state defeated Ogun state 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 17-25, 15-13) to win gold in the Men’s volleyball event of the men’s volleyball at the Asaba 2022 National Sports Festival on Friday evening.
    Team Kaduna was very outstanding in the final event as they put up a spirited performance against team Ogun at the Men’s final.
    Kaduna surprisingly took the first set by 25 to 21 points in a set that saw the Ogun players struggle to get their rhythm. The second set produced a spectacular display from both sides as Ogun won by 26 to 24 points.
    The young Kaduna players held Ogun state ransom in the third set 25 to 23 points before Ogun came back from behind to win the fourth set by 25-17. Kaduna finally cruised to victory in the fifth set winning by 15 to 13 points.
    The Coach of Kaduna men’s team, Adamu Nitte expressed delight over the win against highly rated Ogun state.
    Nitte revealed that most pundits did not give Kaduna state the chance of winning the finals adding that the Ogun team crushed all their opponents before entering into the finals.
    He said 10 players out of the squad are making their debut at the National Sports Festival.
    He said, “I am overwhelmed and cannot express myself because I am overfilled with joy. Kaduna was not the favourite to win the National Sports Festival but God is our strength and fortress.
    “Ogun state is a very good side looking at their statistics but my boys did not respect them. 10 of my players are playing the National Sports Festival for the first time and this win will further boost their profile”.
    He commended the Chairman of Kaduna State Volleyball Association, Engineer Musa Nimrod for believing in the team.
    Meanwhile, Rivers State beat Kano state to win the men’s bronze at the 2022 National Sports Festival.

    Nigeria’s senior women volleyball team finish 4th at African Championship

    Nigeria on Sunday finished in fourth place at the 2021 African Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Kigali, Rwanda after losing 0-3 to Morocco.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria lost 19-25 17-25 18-25 in their last classification match at the championship.

    NAN reports that the Nigerian men’s team had finished in seventh position in their classification match on Tuesday at the championship.

    The 2021 African Seniors Nations Championships which started on Sept. 5 was expected to end on Monday.

    Cameroon again beat Nigeria 3-0 on Sunday at the ongoing Under-18 Girls African Nations Volleyball Championship in Abuja.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the match at the indoor sports hall of Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Cameroon added more pain to their hosts.

    Cameroon won 25-14, 25-14, 25-22 to maintain their leadership of the competition.

    Speaking after the match, the Head Coach of Nigeria, Elishama Elam, said they were expecting a change in their fortunes from the second meeting with Cameroon.

    He said they were very unfortunate to lose the second match.

    “My girls did not do well in the first and second sets. Their performance was not alright. But it was unfortunate that they did not win their game.

    “They listened to all the instructions we gave them. But the other team were with more advantage against us. We did not believe that they will defeat us again.

    “But we will work on our lapses to win our third game.We need to go back to the drawing board and do the needful ahead of our third game on Monday.

    “My players are good and talented players, and I need to work hard on them so that we can win our last match,” Elam said.

    On his part, the coach of Cameroon, Emile Tong Tong, said they won their second game against Nigeria as a result of adequate preparation.

    “The girls have been in camp since December and we have been training regularly, four days every week with serious training.

    “We worked hard to deserve this victory, and we will work on our lapses to win our third game.

    “We have played a lot of friendly games in Cameroon, and we will work hard to win our last match against Nigeria,” he said.

    The Under-18 Girls and Under-19 Boys African Nations Volleyball Championship which started on Thursday is expected to end on Tuesday.

    Volleyball: Egypt beat Nigeria in Olympic qualifier

    Egypt’s women volleyball team on Tuesday defeated their Nigerian counterparts 3-0 in their second game at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games qualifiers in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

    Egypt won all the three sets of the crucial match on the third day of the competition.

    The Egyptian ladies won 25-11 in the first set, 25-12 in the second and 25-13 in the last set to make the final scoreline 3-0.

    The loss has now dimmed hopes of qualification for the 2020 Olympics by the Nigerian side.

    Nigeria will face Botswana on Wednesday and Kenya on Thursday at the qualifiers.

    The 2020 Olympic qualifiers which started on Sunday is expected to end on Thursday.
