VON DG tasks Tinubu on reviving naira value

Mr Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON) has tasked President Bola Tinubu to implement the Green Imperative Project (GIP), an agricultural mechanisation project, toward reviving the value of naira.

Okechukwu, also a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

“While commending Tinubu for the unification of the Foreign Exchange Market, I wish to advise him to urgently implement the Green Imperative Project(GIP) , an agricultural mechanisation project in-waiting.

“The GIP is a 995 million euro in-kind agricultural mechanisation equipment project initiated by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 between Nigeria and Brazil.

“It is a government to government project aimed at acquisition of modern agricultural machineries and installation of agro-processing plants to upgrade smallholder and medium farmers in Nigeria,” he said.

Okechukwu said that with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, countries like Nigeria with swats of arable lands can fill the void in the international food market left by Ukraine.

“Methinks GIP will play important role in Dollar supply to stem endless Naira crash, which will get worse if we depend only on Oil revenue,” he said.

Okechukwu harped on the vast opportunities to harvest from the GIP with approximate agricultural machinery of 10,000 units of tractors and 50,000 units of assorted farm implements to be assembled in Nigeria.

In addition, he said, GIP was designed to have 632 Tractor Service Centers and 142 Agro-Processing Plants, covering all the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Nigeria.

Okechukwu posited that most importantly, the management centers were designed to be managed by private operators.

“There will be also training centers designed to assist subsistence farmers to be self reliant and owners of the farm implements in the near future.

“One therefore call on Mr President to urgently jump start the GIP as a Hand-Gun to cushion the shock of endless naira crash and the attendant harm to the poor masses,” he said.

  • APC convention proved critics wrong – VON DG

Mr Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), says that the just-concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention has proved critics wrong and those that thought that the party will implode.

Okechukwu, a foundation member of APC, told newsmen in Enugu on Saturday that the party emerged stronger and united after the “very peaceful” convention held for two days in Abuja.

He said that the recent move by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, APC presidential flag bearer to personally visit other aspirants that contested with him with the message of “APC won” is already bringing all members together.

“The convention remains one of the best I have personally witnessed in my over 40 years of political career.

“The presidential primary was peaceful, transparent and clean, devoid of ethno-religious and sectional sentiments.

“APC did not implode as predicted by nay sayers and other people who had predicted that we would disintegrate at the end of the convention.

“The convention had a marvelous and excellent outcome, as we hoisted the national unity flag in the presidential primary convention.

“While our party’s presidential flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu won as a pan Nigerian candidate and not on sectional or ethno-religious inclinations,” he said.

Okechukwu also commended Tinubu and every member of APC for a well deserved victory at the convention.

“I must also commend northern governors and political stakeholders who insisted that the rotation convention between the north and south should be maintained in order to engender national unity,” he added.

  • NUJ condemns call for sales of National Theatre, NTA, VON, others

The Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ ), Lagos State Council, has condemned the call by a serving senator that some federal agencies should be sold.

The union’s condemnation was contained in a communiqué it issued late Saturday night after its December monthly congress held at the Ladi Lawal Press Centre, Ikeja.

The union during the congress deliberated on issues affecting its members as well as the state of the nation.

In the communiqué signed by its chairman, Dr. Quaseem Akinreti said, “The Congress condemns in totality the call for the sales of some national commonwealth such as the Nigerian Television Authority( NTA) the National Theatre, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria(FRCN) and the Voice of Nigeria,(VON), as canvassed by a member of the National Assembly.

The congress calls for the appropriate funding of these National Assets and other MDAs so that they will continue to generate employment opportunities for the nation.’’

On beat associations, it urged owners of media houses to pay their staff as and when due to ensure decorum in the journalism practice.

It condemned situations whereby some media owners owned their staffers several months of unpaid salary arrears.

The congress also called on the NUJ at the national and state levels to always monitor activities of beat associations with a view to sanctioning those found to be involved in unethical conducts.

On issues affecting members, it advised that all relevant stakeholders in the media industry should always be involved in taking unanimous decisions before such decisions were implemented.
“It calls for a reorientation of members on proper conduct at assignments and the remodeling of beat associations in the line of professionalism.’’

The congress, however, kicked against corrupt tendencies among members, while calling for the enforcement of rules guiding against unethical behaviours within the profession.

The congress also decried the abandoning of the pursuance of the minimum Wage/Media Enhancement Bill by the national body of the union.

It promises to take the lead by submitting to the Lagos State House of Assembly a Media Enhancement Bill that will stipulate the guidelines to be adhered to by intending media owners in the state regarding salaries for their would-be workers.’’

The congress also frowned at the upsurge of fake journalists in Lagos State and planned a review of journalists’ biometrics in 2018 to curb the menace.

It also decried the incessant harassments of journalists by security operatives while on lawful duty in the communique.
The congress said that it would through its state executive inaugurate a security chapel for public relations officers from the armed forces and other security agencies to forge cordial relations between the two organisations.
