  • Britain votes today, 3rd poll in 5 years

Polls will open in Britain today at 0700 GMT for the third general election in under five years — and the second since the seismic 2016 referendum vote to leave the European Union.

Turnout will be vital in Britain’s first December election in nearly a century. Rain and even snow are forecast for parts of election day, while voters in Britain’s most northerly town will have less than six hours of daylight.

Rival party leaders dashed around the country on Wednesday in a frantic push for votes in the final hours before the highly-charged snap election aimed at breaking the Brexit impasse.

Parliament’s divided parties — some seeking a swift exit from the EU and others wanting to stay in the bloc — repeatedly rejected the divorce terms former prime minister Theresa May struck with Brussels.

#NigeriaDecides: Seven simple steps to vote in today’s presidential, NASS elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently released the steps a voter would take to cast their vote on Election Day during the general elections, starting with the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly polls today, (Saturday) February 23, 2019.

The electoral body enumerated seven steps, itemising them on its verified Twitter handle, @inecnigeria as follows:

Step 1: Upon arrival at the polling unit, join the queue and present yourself to the INEC official (APO111) at the polling unit who will determine whether you are at the correct polling unit and check if the photograph on the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) matches your face. If satisfied, he/she will direct you to the next INEC official (APO1).

Step 2: The official (APO1) will request for your PVC to confirm that your card is genuine and your details, using the smart card reader. He/she will ask you to place your finger on the card reader to confirm that the PVC belongs to you by ascertaining, the card reader will contain the name, photograph and finger prints of all those registered in their polling unit.

Step 3: You will then meet the next official (APO11) who will request for your PVC to confirm that your name and details are in the voters register. Your name will be ticked and your PVC returned to you. He/ she will then apply indelible ink to the cuticle of your appropriate finger for that election to show you have been accredited to vote. (If your name is not found on the register, you will not be allowed to vote).

Step 4: The presiding officer (PO) stamps, signs and endorses the date at the back of the Ballot Paper. The PO will roll the ballot paper inwardly with the printed side inwards and give to you. He /she will then direct you to the voting cubicle where you vote in secret.

Step 5: You will stain your appropriate finger for the election with the ink provided then use your stained finger to mark the space or box provided on the ballot paper for your preferred candidate/party. Roll the marked ballot paper (in the manner the PO gave to you).

Step 6: Then leave the voting cubicle and drop the ballot paper in the ballot box in full view of people at the polling unit.

Step 7: You will then leave the polling unit or wait if you so choose in an orderly and peaceful manner to work the process up to declaration of result.
It also noted that the result of each polling unit shall be pasted at the unit and for everyone to see.

  • ‘Over 1m dead Nigerians will vote on Saturday’

‘Over 1m dead Nigerians will vote on Saturday’

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, has alleged that over 1,050,051 dead voters will vote during Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to him, the voter register contains the data of dead people.

Secondus spoke at the National Executive Committee meeting of the PDP in Abuja on Tuesday.

He alleged that the voter register was being manipulated, adding that Independent National Electoral Commission did not do a thorough job on the voter register before publishing it.

He said, “A sick narrative has emerged, one of systemic and systematic rigging, the manipulation of the true record of the voter register and a cabal you can no longer trust with the trajectory and growth of our democracy and nation.

This is the evidence of bad faith by those managing the elections and the government of the day.

There has been a coordinated approach to register foreigners, mainly from Niger and Cameroon, as voters. That is why INEC has established so many polling units along the borders with Cameroon and Niger.”

Presidential poll: Obasanjo denies ‘running away’, says I’ll vote tomorrow if…

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday assured that he would vote during the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for tomorrow if he is “alive.”

Obasanjo, who described the polls as a “red letter day” for Nigeria, added it should be used to stabilise the nation’s democracy.

The elder statesman made this known to reporters at his sprawling Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital while readying himself to play a squash game within the facility.

He also denied rumour on the social media he jetted out of the country without waiting to cast his vote for the Atiku Abubakar he is labouring to foist on Nigerians.

He cursed the rumour mongers, saying God would deal with them at the “appropriate time.”

He assured that he would vote at his usual polling (Ita Eko) where he registered.

Obasanjo said: “If I am here and alive and kicking, I will vote. Why do you think I will travel out of the country because of the election?

If there is no any reason, I believe I should be here to exercise my civic responsibility which is to vote according to the dictate of my heart both tomorrow and on the 2nd of March, 2019.

Those who are carrying that kind rumour or what they now call fake news, I think I leave them in the hands of God.

You know, I’m used to that type of things now and in Yorubaland, we have this saying that if your head is hard, you don’t have to worry yourself.

So, let anybody tell lies against me, let anybody issue fake news against me, let anybody abuse me, my God will deal with them rightly and at the appropriate time.

On the elections, I believe that tomorrow should be a red letter day for all Nigerians. A day when we should be able to say that we are firmly stabilise our democracy.

Although for me, I still have some apprehensions. If the news of the already thumb printed ballot papers in Kano state yesterday.

I have received news in Ondo today I have received news in Ikorodu where ballot papers that have been thumb printed were allegedly intercepted there is trouble”.

If these things are true; we haven’t had anything like these before. I don’t want to say ‘oh, have I not told you!’ But it will be sad if they are true and then, maybe, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will then have to tell us, how this has to happen and maybe the commission will have an answer to that.

And not only answer, but precautions against this tomorrow because if people are already thumb printing, obviously they want to make sure that those already thumb printed ballot papers are used. If that happens, then it will make nonsense of all that INEC has prepared for and all that Nigerians are looking forward to.”

2019: My supporters are demanding sex before vote – Female contestant cries out

A candidate of the Mass Action Joint Alliance (MAJA) in Edo State, Ms Charity Idahosa, has cried out over alleged sexual harassment by her male counterparts.

Idahosa, who is contesting the Oredo West Constituency in the State House of Assembly, said her efforts to get support for her political ambition had resulted in sexual advances from the opposite sex.

The politician, who spoke with journalists in Benin City, declined to mention the names of those harassing her, but described it as a negative trend against women in politics.

She noted that despite the passage of the Not-too-young-to-run Bill, female candidates needed protection and support to participate in political activities without being sexually harassed.

Idahosa, however, noted that she remained undaunted in her desire to contest the February election despite the obvious frustration and lack of support.

She stated, “I came into politics with the desire to make a change and contribute my quota to the development of Oredo West Constituency.

It will be shocking to note that the people I had looked up to for support often asked for sexual gratification before giving their support and, for me, it is absurd and unacceptable.

I know this may sound funny, but it is real. There are many women out there who cannot speak out on some of their unpleasant encounters and experience.

I think it is high time for Nigeria women to rise against this trend. We need to be protected and supported.”

  • 2019: Vote wisely, Taiga urges Urhobos

The President-General of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide, Olorogun Moses Taiga, has called on Urhobos to be vigilant and vote for only candidates who will protect Urhobo interest and work for the progress of the Urhobo Nation.

In a personally-signed New Year message, Olorogun taiga said, “As we move towards the General Elections, I again reiterate that no single Urhobo blood should be shed on the altar of politics. We must be tolerant of each other and practice politics as refined people. We are one; a people of common identity and common ancestry, so when you hurt one, you hurt all.

Taiga called for greater unity, cooperation and mutual trust among Urhobo people in consolidating the gains made in the past years. While extending warm wishes to Urhobos and other Nigerians on the dawn of the New Year, promised that the UPU will continue to take determined actions that will ensure a greater Urhobo land.

The UPU is strengthened by the commitment, love, patriotism and selflessness shown by the Urhobo Nation in the past two years of my administration, and I remain committed to fulfilling my electoral promises to take the Urhobo Nation to greater heights. In the New Year, I look forward to seeing the Urhobo people exhibiting greater unity, more love, understanding, cooperation and mutual trust. By so doing, we will sustain the achievements of the past, surmount any challenges in our midst and certainly make more progress in 2019.

We must focus on a better future. We must collectively eschew any form of divisiveness and live in peace with one another and with our neighbours. As we face up to 2019, I wish all of you a happy, safe and productive New Year. May God bless you all.”

  • Minimum wage will determine workers’ voting pattern in 2019 elections – NLC

The National Minimum Wage will determine the voting pattern by Nigerian workers in the 2019 general elections, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said.

Its General Secretary, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ozo-Eson said that this was due to the delay by President Muhammadu Buhari to transmit an Executive Bill on the agreed N30, 000 National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly to kick-start its implementation.

“I want to say that if this is not addressed now, the minimum wage issue will become the major determinant of the 2019 General Elections.

“I think the government must ensure that it quickly takes this matter up on the table so that it does not get mixed up with the forthcoming general elections in the country,’’ he said.

Ozo-Eson said that it was already more than a month since the Ama Pepple-led Tripartite Committee submitted its recommendation of N30, 000 report to the president.

“We are already more than three weeks gone, since the submission of that recommendation of the tripartite committee to Mr President.

“Mr President had promised at the occasion that he will act quickly on it.

“We are disturbed that up till now he has not sent the bill to the National Assembly.

“Therefore, our advice to workers is that those in government who have shown no interest in the welfare of workers, or have unleashed terror on workers, should be voted out.

“We urge our members to use their voting powers to vote such people out,” he said.

The NLC scribe recalled that the minimum wage had been due for review for more than two years.

He said though, the union understood the current economic challenges of the country, government could have still done better if they have the interest of workers at heart.

Ozo-Eson said that though, the political parties have started their campaign, the National Assembly had assured workers that legislators would attend to bills of national importance.

He also said that the National Assembly members had specifically promised that they would give accelerated hearing if the bill on the minimum wage reached them.

  • 2019: Stop complaining, vote out bad leaders, Abdulsalami tells Nigerians

A former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, on Friday in Jos, Plateau State, urged Nigerians to stop complaining about the present hardship in the country but instead vote out incompetent leaders during the 2019 elections.

Abubakar spoke at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, during the 2018 Distinguished Annual Lecture for Senior Executive Course 40 participants, with the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as Special Guest of Honour.

Abubakar condemned the practice of vote-buying by politicians, insisting that it must be discouraged by all means.

He said, “Every citizen has a duty. You must not sell your vote. You must register to vote.

Stop criticising the failures of government, go and vote them out if you think those voted are not doing their job.

We must all try to work on our nationhood through constitutional and policy framework. It is only in this way that we can ignite responsible leadership for the country.

It is through this approach that we can truly build national institutions that will enthrone justice and equity.”

Speaking further, Abubakar described the 91 parties registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission as an “unwholesome development.”

He said that INEC was not helping the country’s democracy by registering too many political parties as most of them were still regional in character and lack ideological inclinations.

He also called on the organisation to be transparent in its activities if it wished to engender confidence among Nigerians.
