No list was padded for WAEC registration, C’River Commissioner debunks rumour

    Wevole Ezin, Calabar

The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey haas debunked rumours going round that his ministry padded list of names of students the state government was going to pay 2024 WAEC registration.

Odey debunked this yesterday while addressing newsmen in his office in Calabar.

He said it was unfortunate that mischiefs were going around peddling false rumours just to be in the governor’s good book

According to him, that from the 298 secondary schools in the state, 16, 301 names were sent to the ministry but after shortlisting, 64 non indigenes were found in the lists and were removed immediately.

He said some schools that submitted late were not registered, giving a total of 16,237 indigent students that were registered under the state government to sit for the coming West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).

“Let me use this opportunity to debunk in totality that no list was padded. The WAEC list was never padded and it can never happen under my watch. For those of you who know my anticidents, it can never because i was sent to this place with trust and I know that the Governor trust me and will never betray that trust and of cause no director under me can attempt it.

” I was shocked when a friend called me and said that the Chief of Staff and I padded the list up to 180m , i think it was the greatest shock of my life. I think that is what we paid for, leadership and sacrifice. I had to take it because I’m aware that we have a lot of mischief makers around , going round peddling false rumours to look good before the governor but they will never see it here.

“I have been a member of the Senate committee on education, I have been a SUBEB Chairman, I’m a Lecturer, not just but a senior Lecturer with about sixty something publications, i don’t think i will come here and rubish my integrity.” The Commissioner expressed displeasure.

On promotion and employment, Odey said as a commissioner, he has been written to the governor, Senator Bassey Otu to approve the employment of 6,000 teachers for a start an also to implement promotion of those on grand as a way of motivation.

The Commissioner further stated, “Since I came onboard, I have been writing letters to the governor to implement promotion of teachers because that is another way of motivating people. We are paying so much, about four hundred and forty something to register WAEC and we cannot achieve positive results if they don’t teach the students. I want Cross River State to be rated high and you cannot give what you don’t have.

“And that is why we say, due to the lean resources of the state, we have to do it in phases, the government should grant us approval to employ 6,000 teachers in the first phase and as the finances of the state improve, we can do more. We are still waiting for that memo to be released.”

The Commissioner added, “We are going to go after illegal schools going on in Cross Rive State, it cannot be business as usual. Once the Easter holiday is over, we are going after them and we are going to close them down, they will have to come here and do the proper thing.”

  • Candidates to get certificates immediately after release of results soon- WAEC

Candidates to get certificates immediately after release of results soon- WAEC

The West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, has announced plans to ensure that candidates of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination get their certificates once their results are released.

The Head of the National Office, Patrick Areghan, made this known on Tuesday at a luncheon organized by the exam body in Lagos.

Whether your certificate was burnt or lost to flood or eaten by termites, you don’t have to go through the stress of recovering it. Just pick up your phone and log on to our website and it comes straight from the WAEC database

He also noted that the digital certificate set to be launched on Thursday, October 20, 2022, applies to those who wrote the exams between 1999 and till date, adding that the preceding years would be considered much later.

According to him, the new digital certificate cannot be tampered with or falsified, just as it would send fakers out of the market.

He said, “Whether your certificate was burnt or lost to flood or eaten by termite, you don’t have to go through the stress of recovering it. Just pick up your phone and log on to our website and it comes straight from the WAEC database.

“We have solved the problem of theft. We have saved you the headache of carrying the hard copies of your certificate. And the good thing that will come out of this is, by the time we take a final decision and perfect everything if we release the results today, I can tell you that the certificates are ready.

“It is just to roll them out. If we announce the release of results today, the certificates will automatically be ready for release. It may just take a year to transit because the certificates we have now are going to be treated, but immediately after they are treated, they will be available in the database. The next one, that will be 2023 or 2024, immediately we release the results the certificate will be ready.”

He, however, listed insecurity as one of the challenges the body was facing in conducting exams across the country.

He said, “Places where you go to by road, you now have to fly because of insecurity. Almost everybody in WAEC now flies. We are the greatest movers of leg and materials. We stay in hotels. And you know for security reasons you can no longer stay in anyhow hotel. You have to stay in a safe area. There are some places you cannot conduct exams without the physical presence of the police and the Nigerian Army.

“When you go to the East due to what I will call ethnic separatism; you go to the north where you have banditry and insurgency; how do you conduct exams in those areas? Thank God some state governments cooperate with us. If not for the military and the brigade command in Yobe and Borno States, we would not have been able to conduct the examination. In the East, we thank the DSS. And generally, all over the country, we thank the Inspector-General of Police.

“We take the exam to every nook and cranny of the country. Our exam is not such that you gather people together in one central location. There is no facility like that in Nigeria. Wherever the school is located, you must go there to conduct the examination. That is a great challenge. Even in some places where you don’t have banditry, gunmen or insurgency, the roads are not good. These are the challenges we have in trying to serve the Nigerian child.”

  • You don’t need WAEC certificate to become president, governor —Keyamo

You don’t need WAEC certificate to become president, governor —Keyamo

Director, Strategic Communications of President Buhari 2019 Presidential Campaign, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has said that, based on the provisions of the Constitution, an aspirant does not need a WAEC certificate to become a president or governor in the country.

Taking to his verified Twitter handle @fkeyamo on Monday, Keyamo had stated, “There are other levels of qualifications to run for the office of president. In fact, if you have occupied the public office for a reasonable length of time, by the provisions of the Constitution, you do not even need a WAEC certificate to become president of Nigeria.”

Keyamo had tweeted his responses at a television interview earlier held on Sunday.

While Keyamo appears to be answering back at the Peoples Democratic Party who had argued that Muhammadu Buhari didn’t deserve to run for presidency on account of the controversies surrounding his WAEC certificate, the Buhari campaign spokesperson alluded to the 2018 Osun governorship election scenario.

In the Osun case, PDP’s candidate in the election, Ademola Adeleke, was sued in separate instances by the opposition and also by members of his party concerning the status of his WAEC certificate.

Keyamo argues, “Yes. Section 318 of the 1999 Constitution defines ‘School Certificate or its equivalent’ to mean Primary 6 School Leaving Certificate plus the ability to just speak, write, understand and communicate in English language to the satisfaction of INEC. No WAEC certificate is needed.

“By the definition of ‘School Certificate or its equivalent’ in Section 318 of the 1999 Constitution, you don’t need a WAEC certificate to become President or Governor, but if you present a FORGED WAEC or other certificate to INEC for any office you will be disqualified. #OsunStateScenario.”

He added that forgery occurs when the supposed author of a document denies ever making it or denies its authenticity.

Zeroing in on his principal’s certificate imbroglio, Keyamo tweets, “WAEC has confirmed the authenticity of PMB’s certificate by issuing an attestation of it. Case closed.

“In Osun case scenario, WAEC has denied the authenticity. See the difference?

Taking a swipe at those who had criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s WAEC status, the SAN warned that it was “extremely foolish” for anybody who is not statutorily empowered to issue WAEC certificates to challenge the body that has the statutory power to issue certificates.

“Let me end my free lecture series by saying that the crux of the matter is that if you don’t have a WAEC certificate, there’s no need to go ahead and forge one in a bid to be governor or president.

You can still be qualified, regardless. That’s the mistake made in Osun case scenario,”

  • Opposition parties to Buhari: ‘Your WAEC certificate is fake’

Opposition parties to Buhari: ‘Your WAEC certificate is fake’

Opposition political parties under the aegis of Coalition of United Political Parties have described the sudden release of the confirmation of result by WAEC in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as suspicious.

They said that there were indications that the result was hurriedly released to stall the commencement of the suit seeking to disqualify the President from the 2019 election, describing the action as laughable, unbelievable and a desperate effort to mislead the court and shield President Buhari from being disqualified in the 2019 presidential election.

CUPP is made up of about 42 political parties.

The CUPP in a statement issued in Abuja by its National Spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere, called on WAEC to produce the official ledger and booklet containing the scores and records of names of students of the Provincial Secondary School, katsina, now called Government Secondary School.

The spokesperson said WAEC succumbed to what he called “high level pressure to issue out the document which is suspicious and aimed at misleading Nigerians and the court to believe President Buhari sat for the exam when in the actual sense he did not, as there is no evidence to support the assertion.”

He added, “Let Nigerians be reminded that a few days ago, the opposition raised the alarm that there was an ongoing move to tamper with the records of WAEC and pressure the leadership into manufacturing a result for President Buhari.

Today’s action of WAEC has vindicated our earlier fears and confirmed our stand that WAEC is now competing with Oluwole Market in manufacturing documents.”

  • Senator Andy Uba parading forged WAEC certificate, lawyer alleges

Senator representing Anambra South Constituency, Andy Uba has been accused of forging the West African Examination Certificate, WAEC results that he parades.

The allegation was made by his estranged lawyer, Victor Uwaje, on Wednesday.

Uwaje was reacting to the allegation that he was trying to extort money from the senator and threatening to destroy his image.

While describing the allegation as false and baseless, he said the dispute between them was over the refusal of the senator to settle his professional fee.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that Senator Uba had in a petition published in the media on April 11 accused Uwaje of attempting to extort money from him, stressing that the lawyer had threatened to destroy his reputation.

While addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Uwaje said his dispute with the Senator began after he helped the senator lift a travel ban against him by the United Kingdom.

Uwaje said he also settled all cases of fraud leveled against Uba in the United States, but later discovered that the senator’s secondary school leaving certificates had been forged.

He told reporters in Abuja, “Sometimes in 2012, I met with Senator Andy Uba who briefed me that he had issues with the UK authorities because he was banned in 2008 from entering the United Kingdom, and being a British citizen and a private investigator, he wanted me to lift the exclusion ban on him from entering the UK.

“I met with him at his Asokoro residence where he gave me the power of attorney duly signed by him, both of us appended our signatures. It was authorising me to work on his behalf and he was going to return the expenses back to me that will assist in lifting the ban on him.

“He also had an arrest warrant against him in the State of Los Angeles, he also gave me a power of attorney in 2015 signed by Senator Andy Uba to lift the arrest warrant against him.

“After everything, I sought for my professional fees and sent it to him. It kept lingering, he refused to pay. So, at the end of the day, I filed a court process against him, seeking for payment of my professional fees. The amount in question is £1.8 million.

“In the Vanguard of yesterday, Andy Uba said I was trying to blackmail him to extort money from him and I want to put the records straight about my dealings with Senator Emmanuel Andy Uba.

“We started from 2016, we have been in court since 2016, so I don’t see the reason he is alluding to blackmail, because we are in court, he was served through the Clerk of the National Assembly. I don’t understand how a case in court is blackmail.”

The lawyer said he found out about Uba’s alleged false declaration of asset after studying the documents given to him by the senator and investigating it.

“He presented a lot of documents to be presented to the UK authorities, some forged documents, WAEC certificate and others, which were part of the documents filed in court.

“WAEC confirmed that the certificate Nnamdi Uba is parading is a fake document and I expect the authorities to look into this vehemently because forgery in the National Assembly is alarming and I feel the media is crucial to straightening issues in Nigeria.

“I have received several threat phone calls from the UK, different phone calls from people claiming to be his agents threatening my life.”
