  • Sarkin Fulani urges politicians not to divide Nasarawa indigenes along religious lines

Sen. Walid Jibrin says Nasarawa state is made up of Muslims and Christians in almost equal numbers and urged politicians not to do anything capable of dividing the state along religious lines.

Jibrin, the Sarkin Fulani of Nasarawa state, gave the admonition in a statement he issued and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

The septuagenarian was reacting to an allegation that some groups loyal to the state governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Sule were “pleading religious sentiment’’ after his election was annulled by the Nasarawa state Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The tribunal had in a split judgment of two members to one, delivered on Oct. 2, sacked Gov. Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared Dr. David Ombugadu of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), the winner.

After the governor had appealed the tribunal judgment, the groups were alleged to have launched a campaign that Ombuagudu, being a Christian, could not be governor in the state.

“Since the creation of Nasarawa state, the governor has always been a Muslim and there was no any religious fight in the whole of the state.

“May I point out clearly that Dr. Ombugadu is a candidate of both Muslims and Christians in the state and he has never shown any sign of any campaign against Muslims even though he is Christian.

“After all, his deputy is a true Muslim from the North Central Zone of the state,’’ Jibrin said.

The Fulani leader and a Muslim devout assured that, if Ombuagudu eventually becomes governor of the state, he would be fair to all citizens irrespective of the faith.

“During his campaign, Ombugadu donated vehicles to, Islamic groups, JNI and NASFAT and he also donated towards the building of many Mosques in Nasarawa state.

“He also donated boreholes to Mosques, markets, and Churches for use by all,’’ he said.

Jibrin noted that Christain had emerged as the President of the country including Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

“May I point out that those so-called group of Muslims who are against Ombugadu to become the governor of Nasarawa are never do well people.

“They do not understand Islamic religion very well and never receive total support of Nasarawa state citizens,’’ he said.

Speaking on the governorship election, Jibrin said Ombugadu won the poll and alleged that INEC manipulated the results in favour of the governor.

“Every Nigerian that followed the election online knew that by Sunday, March 19 in the morning, Dr Ombugadu, from the upload on the INEC IREV platform had already won the governorship election by a comfortable margin.

“We were all shocked by what happened because up to this day, the results from polling units from Nasarawa state on the INEC IREV platform show that Sule lost to Ombugadu,’’ he said.

Jibrin contended that the Nasarawa people rejected the governor at the poll because of “lack of performance and empty promises’’.

PDP crisis: The ‘god’ rejects lesser sacrifice – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Thursday, September 8, 2022. Several events occurred in the Peoples Democratic Party that may sustain or resolve its crisis since the May 28-29 primaries to choose the party’s standard bearer for the 2023 general election.

One, the embattled National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, presided at the meeting of the National Executive Committee at its headquarters in Abuja.

Two, the NEC passed a vote of confidence in the Ayu-led National Working Committee, “for effectively managing the affairs of the party” since its election in October 2021.

Three, at a prior meeting, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr Walid Jibrin, resigned, offering himself as a “sacrificial lamb” to appease Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, “so the PDP will be united to win the 2023 elections.”

(Earlier reports of resignation of the Chairman of PDP’s Governors’ Forum and Sokoko State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, was debunked by the forum’s Director-General, CID Maduabum, on September 9.)

Four, Wike swiftly rejected Jibrin’s resignation, as no “god,” worth its name, will accept a lesser sacrifice as propitiation, just to satisfy the desire of “mere mortals.”

Not even the immediate elevation of former Senate President Adolphus Wabara (a southerner from Abia State in the South-East) from the position of secretary to the chairman of the BoT, could soften Wike’s stance.

Wike demands Ayu’s ouster as pre-condition for accepting the double political tragedy he’d suffered in his run for the presidency: Loss of the PDP ticket to Atiku, and the running mate to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Aftermath of placing second to Atiku at the primaries,  Wike repeatedly complained about being schemed out by party chieftains, reportedly spearheaded by Ayu.

Wike’s miffed that, had Tambuwal not stepped down for Atiku at the eleventh hour, he would’ve carried the day, as Atiku polled 371 votes to his 237 votes.

Surprisingly, Ayu later hailed Tambuwal as “the hero of the convention,” ostensibly for swinging the PDP ticket in favour of both Atiku and the Northern region of Nigeria.

The press captured Ayu’s “thank-you-visit” to Tambuwal, in company of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, thus:

“Ayu, who embraced the Sokoto governor warmly and later shook hands with him, first referred to him as ‘my chairman,’ but Tambuwal jocularly retorted, smiling: ‘I’m a small chairman, sir.’

“Ayu then shook hands with him (Tambuwal) again and said, ‘You are the hero of the convention,’ a remark to which Tambuwal replied: “Thank you, sir.”

Atiku also timeously visited Tambuwal on a similar courtesy, thereby feeding into Wike’s narrative of a gang-up against his emergence as the PDP flagbearer.

Recall, though, that based on the region that’d favour his aspiration for president or vice president, Wike’s ready to change his support for rotation of the presidency to the South to retaining power in the North for the 2023 polls.

But after losing the ticket to Atiku, Wike doubled down on a Southern presidency, even as he claimed “Emi lo kan” (as per Bola Ahmed Tinubu) for the position of running mate – on account of his second placing at the primaries.

Then came a June 26 bombshell. Atiku named Dr Okowa as vice presidential candidate, leaving Wike vowing to excise a pound of flesh from the PDP unless it ceded its top positions, including the chairmanship, to the South.

Wike relies on a gentleman’s agreement reportedly entered into by the leadership of the PDP prior to the primaries: That the national chairman would resign his position if the North produced the presidential candidate of the party.

As Atiku, a northerner from Adamawa State in the North-East, has secured the PDP ticket, why won’t Ayu, a fellow northerner from Benue State in North Central (Middle Belt), resign or be induced to quit for a southerner?

This is Wike’s urging, but PDP’s dilemma: How to “force” Ayu out of office barely 10 months into a four-year tenure beginning on October 31, 2021, and as the countdown starts for the crucial 2023 polls about five months away.

The question: Who’ll win the ego-filled battle of supremacy between Atiku, backed by the PDP leadership, and Wike, supported mostly by the governors from the South-South, South-East, South-West and North Central?

Wike hasn’t shown any inclination to back down, or shift ground, even as the chair of the PDP BoT has been taken up by a southerner, which should fit into Wike’s demands.

Were Ayu to resign from the national chair, would Wike be satisfied, and not shift the goalpost, to squeeze the PDP for more, even if unmerited political concessions?

Added to PDP’s worries is Wike’s romance – in Nigeria and overseas – with the presidential candidates and proxies of the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party.

Wike glories in such high-profile meetings, especially  when he extends invitations to opposing politicians to flag-off or commission projects executed by his administration.

The PDP is in a peculiar dire strait, as most of its leaders, and the rank and file think, erroneously, that Wike alone has the “magic wand” to winning the 2023 elections.

And Wike continues his daily commentaries: That without his asking the people of Rivers to cast their ballots for them, Atiku and the PDP will lose the elections.

It’s a novel psychological warfare by a “PDP man to the core,” such that even diehard members are less optimistic about victories in the February and March 2023 polls.

Last Line: A suit is reportedly instituted at a Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to dissolve the Ayu-led NWC of the PDP, for alleged improper constitution via a National Convention of October 30 and 31, 2021, where Ayu and 20 Members were elected into the NWC.

Specifically, the lawsuit seeks to declare “the outcome and all matters, resolutions, decisions and steps, including the election/adoption of the 2nd to 20th Defendants as National Chairman and Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the 1st Defendant (PDP) as null and void and of no effect whatsoever by reason of it being improperly constituted.”

The dreaded writ, linked to former PDP Chairman Uche Secondus, can unwittingly settle the current rift in the PDP if judgment is given for a fresh National Convention, and yet upend the party’s calculations for the 2023 elections.

    Details later….

  • PDP BOT Chairman, Govs congratulate Atiku on Okowa

Chairman, People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT), Sen. Walid Jibrin advised party members to see the emergence of Ifeanyi Okowa as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate as an act of God.

Jibrin in a statement in Abuja, urged party faithful to accept the decision and work together for the victory of PDP in 2023 general elections.

“I urge all PDP members to accept this decision in good faith and give the strongest support to Abubakar as president of Nigeria and his Vice president Chief Okowa as his vice president.

“Both Muslims and Christians must come together to give all support to them all.

“All PDP members must come together to unite for PDP to take over from the All Progressives Congress,” he said.

Also, the former National Chairman of the PDP, Mr Uche Secondus has congratulated former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar for picking Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta as his running mate for 2023 poll.

Secondus said this in a statement from his media office on Thursday in Abuja.
“Abubakar is a square peg in a square hole whose pedigree in the nation’s political space remains outstanding and speaks for itself,” he said.

Secondus said that choice of Okowa as Abubakar running mate was a right step in the right direction.
“With the picking of a running mate, the candidacy is complete and PDP is now set for the inevitable journey back to Aso Rock come 2023,” he said.

PDP Governors Forum congratulates Okowa on VP selection

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF) has congratulated Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on his emergence as the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP for the 2023 general elections.

The forum felicitated with Okowa in a statement issued by its Chairman, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State in Abuja on Thursday.

Tambuwal said that the PDP-GF commended the party Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for keeping to his word.

He said that in particular that the promised to select a serving PDP governor as his running mate, ostensibly not just because of the contributions of the governors to the effective running of the party and its stability, but because of their experience and executive capacity.

“Gov. Okowa has distinguished himself as Governor of Delta State.

“He also has cognate legislative experience as a former Senator. He has what it takes to be an effective Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

The PDP-GF chairman said that the great task of recovering, rescuing and rebuilding Nigeria begins with the Atiku/Okowa ticket.

Tambuwal, who decried the state of governance; insecurity, economy, education, health and social services in the country, says “with the Atiku/Okowa ticket help is on the way. We shall overcome.”

  • PDP BoT Chairman reacts to Atiku’s emergence as party’s presidential flagbearer

Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Walid Jibrin, has described the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as PDP presidential candidate as a huge success for the party.

Jibrin in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja also described it as a good omen for all Nigerians.

He said that the former vice president’s success had opened a way for all Nigerians as far as the 2023 general elections were concerned.

The BoT chairman recalled how Abubakar had been elected at the PDP presidential primaries in Port-Harcourt in 2019 and how it was sabotaged.

“We must remember Atiku’s outstanding performance as vice-president to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

“Our party and all our delegates across the 36 states and the FCT must be congratulated for playing good roles,” Jibrin said.

He said that the BoT would assist the party and Abubakar to come out with a very acceptable running mate from the Southern part of Nigeria.

“My advice, as the PDP BoT Chairman, the conscience of the party, is that we must come together as one entity.

“We must come out as a party, talking with one voice to make our party the greatest, not only in Nigeria and West Africa, but in Africa, with no ethnic, sectional or religious segregation,” he said.

Jibrin also congratulated the Sen. David Mark-led Convention Committee for organising the best national convention after the one held in Port Harcourt which was chaired by Gov. Patrick Okowa of Delta in 2019.

  • 2023: PDP BoT chair alleges threat to life

2023: PDP BoT chair alleges threat to life

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin, has raised the alarm over threats to his life.

The PDP chieftain feared that his remarks that the party will not zone its presidential ticket in 2023 might have pitted him against some forces.

He has petitioned the Director-General of Department of State Service (DSS) and Inspector-General (IG) of Police,

Sen. Jibrin recently stated that the party will give room for interested aspirants from all parts of the country to contest for the presidential primaries for the 2023 elections, which elicited various reaction including threats of demonstration against him and harassment.

He said: “I have received call from some people threatening my life over my coming out not to mention that the presidency of this country be zoned to the Northeast. They were saying that I am a traitor, that I should have come out to say that it is only Atiku Abubakar, that because I said that Atiku was already overthrown by the Supreme Court. They said for that, I should say Atiku is the man.

“That I won’t do because I am a leader. I have to make a lot of consultations; the National Working Committee (NWC) have to make a lot of consultations; our governors have to make a lot of consultations; then the NEC had to take a decision. And they should not forget the party has a constitution and a guideline which says that there must be primary for whoever wants to contest.

“We have not even discussed about zoning. So, why are some people so concerned about the presidential ticket being zoned to a particular zone?

“About three people went to Wadata Plaza and demanded to see the Chief Security Officer, Munir Yerima. When they were there, Yerima rang me, asking where I was and I said I’m in Kaduna, then he said some people want to talk to me and I said let me talk to them on phone.

“He said they are intermediary between me and some party people that they said I have gone astray and if I don’t recant, they would hold a major demonstration against me and they would arrange bandits to deal with me wherever I go.

“So, I told the man to go and do whatever he wants to do that I’m equal to the task. Then I realised it’s not only a major demonstration but they may be planning to assassinate me.

“I have written to the DG DSS and the police IG to ensure that the matter is seriously handled as people can’t stand on their own. I’m an elder statesman in the party and in Northern Nigeria. I’m a Fulani… who have tried to stop the threats of militant Fulani in my local government and in my state.

“I’m a very religious person who cannot even kill a rat or an ant, yet people are trying to harass me, to assassinate me. I want the police to give me protection and stop this harassment. They said the people are from Kano, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi and Jigawa states.

“It’s a gang from these Northern states who are planning against me. Let’s see if the security agencies would allow this to happen. I would do all expected of me, I’m not shaken.

“Our party has not finished arrangements towards 2023, all we are doing now is reconciliation to ensure that our party are together, we have concluded arrangements to hold congresses. Soon the NWC would convene a NEC meeting and convention to ratify the arrangements.”

He said as the BoT chairman of the party he is leader of members from every part of the country, wondering “If the Igbo ask me about the party’s choice for president in 2023, how do I explain to them? There are people agitating for the Southwest; so we have to bring people together to agree on what people want. So, they should leave me alone”.
