Renewed Warri crisis: Macaulay calls for calm, advises all ethnic groups to embrace peace

Following the renewed crisis’s between Iteskiri and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in Warri, former Secretary to Delta State Government, Comrade (Chief) Ovuozourie Samuel Macaulay, the Okiroro of Isoko Nation, has called for calm.

Macaulay in his statement which was made available to newsmen on Sunday, urging all ethnic groups involved to shewed their swords.

He recounted the harrowing memories of the past Warri crisis, noting that, it not only devastated the Rich Oil City but also severely disrupted oil production and inflicted deep economic wounds on the Area.

In his words; “The scars from those tragic days are still fresh in our minds. We must do everything within our power to ensure that we do not return to that dark chapter in our history.

“As a matter of urgency, I am passionately appealing to leaders of all ethnic nationalities and non-indigenous communities residing in Warri to caution their followers against making inflammatory statements or engaging in actions likely to undermine the fragile peace in the city most especially now that all industries are returning back to the City.

“I also called on the government to sustain its impartial approach in promoting peace and maintaining security across the city, because that communal harmony that has existed over the years after the crisis is critical to the socio-economic development of Warri and its surroundings.” the statement added.

  • Nani inspects ongoing disilting of canal in Warri by DESOPADEC

…urges Local Government Councils to enforce compliance on illegal dumping of waste

The Chairman of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Hon. John Obukokwho Nani has called on the Local Government Councils to enforce compliance on illegal dumping of refuse on water channels in the State.

He made this call while addressing the media during an inspection tour of the ongoing de-silting work by DESOPADEC at Okere/Esisi road canal today Friday July 25, 2025 in Warri, Warri South Local Government Area.

Nani said that it is the primary duty of the Local Government Councils to take charge of environmental matters and that DESOPADEC is only lending a helping hand as directed by His Excellency Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, saying that the Local Government Councils should as a matter of urgency, enforce compliance on the deliberate erection of structures and dumping of refuse in water channels.

“My advice is that the people around this area should jealously guard this water way, devoid of deliberate dumping of waste inside because it is the waste that is blocking the water channels. We can see the massive refuse and debris been evacuated by the contractor.

“I want to also use this opportunity to appeal to the Local Government Councils to intensify actions in any way possible to arrest the unwholesome activity of dumping waste inside canals,” he added.

The supervisory Counselor, Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Femi Okorodidien however affirmed that the Council was in a process of evacuating the canal before the intervention by DESOPADEC, noting that several efforts had been made to reduce the deliberate act of environmental degradation in Warri South Local Government Area but for the actions of some people who always at the wee hours of the night, dump refuse in the canal.

“A few weeks ago, the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Weyimi Agbatewenyimi, had approved the clearing and desilting of this canal before this intervention by DESOPADEC. We are very thankful to the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and the Board of DESOPADEC for this proactive intervention,” he said.

Also the HOD, Environmental Health Department, Warri South Local Government Area, Sanitarian Stella Nde commended DESOPADEC for the massive clearing and evacuation of the canal, saying that the Council has been doing its best to discourage people from dumping refuse in the canal but for the adamant ones. They have made arrests and prosecuted many offenders.

Meanwhile, massive evacuation of waste and debris was ongoing as a pay loader and swamp buggy were busy desilting the waste from the canal.

  • OWNERSHIP of WARRI: Pessu family writes Tinubu over Rita-Lori’s doctored ancestral facts

OWNERSHIP of WARRI: Pessu family writes Tinubu over Rita-Lori’s doctored ancestral facts

…says under normal circumstances we ought to have ignored her account but it’s good to put the records straight

The Ebiowa Pessu family has written to President Bola Tinubu to straighten the misinformation put out by Chief Rita-Lori Ogbebor over the ownership of Warri.

Apparently peeved by the gross misrepresentation of facts by Ogbebor, the Pessu family in a letter made available to TheNewsGuru.com, TNG gave a vivid account of the realities surrounding the records of the ownership of Warri.

Recall that Ogbebor had written a letter to President TInubu giving an account allegedly laced with falsehood.

The letter signed by Pa Hon D.S.T.O. Pessu titled:’RE: THREAT OF URHOBO AND IJAW CONSPIRACY AND CONNIVANCE WITH
DELTA ELECTORAL COMMISSION ON WARRI-SOUTH WARD DELINEATION
EXERCISE ON OUR ANCESTRAL LAND which the Pessu family copied: Senate president, HoR Speaker, IGP , Chief of Defense Staff, NSA, DSS and others stated that:

    READ FULL LETTER BELOW:

“We are Pessu Ebiowa Family of Warri and we humbly wish to draw Your Excellency’s attention to the above subject matter.

“Our attention has been brought to a Letter dated 22nd April 2025 written to His Excellency by Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor for the Ereku/Ogisi family of Odion Town Warri in respect of the above subject matter.

“In the said letter, Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor created an impression that Warri was initially known as Odion and was founded by her forefather Ogisi. She went ahead to name some families/communities in Warri (amongst whom is the
Pessu Family of Warri) whom she alleged are tenants to her family.
At No. 6 of her Letter which she subtitled as “The Pessu family/community”, she cited Suit No. 25 of 1926 between Ogegede on behalf of himself and agbassa people (Plaintiff) vs Chief Dore Numa (defendant) wherein she referred to the evidence of Chief Dore Numa at paragraph 30 thereof as saying “I gave Pessu permission”.
” This she said defines the status of Pessu family/community.
She went further at No. 7 of her letter which she subtitled as “The Ijaw People/EseIemo family” and stated thus “Suit No. W/26/1929 and others suffice for the status of the Ijaw people in the three Warris.

” And, of which the Ijaw family of Colins Eselemo is on lease from the Pessu family who also on lease and permission by Chief Dore Numa. Thus, both are our tenants.”
Since she wrote the above misinformed and misguided letter she and her family members have been going about harassing our tenants especially with this letter that they are the owners of Warri and that this fact is known to the Presidency.

“We would not have joined issues with her taking into consideration the issue on ground in Warri regarding the delineation exercise in Warri by INEC which has caused so much tension amongst the people in Warri and under whose guise she purports to have written this letter to His Excellency.
However, in order to avert any untold catastrophe that this new found unproved claim of ownership of Pessu lands may cause and also to set the records straight we as a family have decided to write to His Excellency to debunk all the false accounts of Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor regarding ownership of Warri as it relates to the Pessu Family.
First and foremost, we wish to state with all emphasis that the PESSU FAMILY OF WARRI is not, has never and will never be a tenant in Warri, It is a taboo and wickedness of the highest order that anybody will refer to Pessu family as Tenant in Warri.

“Pessu Town was founded by Chief Pessu Ebiowa a direct male descendant of Aborigines of Okotomu-lrigbo (one of the five Aborigine Communities in the Area now known as Warri Kingdom) centuries ago before the advent of the British Colonial Government in Nigeria. It is on record that when the British Consul General Sir Macdonald visited Warri in 1891, Chief Pessu Ebiowa of Pessu Town and Chief Ogbe of Ugbuwangue were amongst the Itsekiri Chiefs he met (see Obaro Ikime Merchant Prince of the Niger Page 69 also J.O.S. Ayomike Selected Essays a mixed Grill page 106).

“The property of Pessu family is made up of land and area which stretches between the river (swamp land) and dry land which was originally part of Okotomu land now known as Pessu Town founded by Chief Pessu Ebiowa as freehold owner under the Itsekiri Native Law and Customary practice free from encumbrances but under the overlordship of the Olu and now vested in the Onare-aja (Head of Family) of Pessu Town for himself and in trust for members of the Pessu family.

“We wish to state that before the Nana war of 1894 and before Chief Dore Numa came into prominence as paramount Chief, the stream that runs from the Warri river down to behind the Roman Catholic Church that further runs down to Cementry Road that make up Pessu Ward and Bowen Ward is Pessu Town which is also inclusive Pessu Town Sawmill Area 1 and Pessu Town Sawmill Area 2 before the 1908 lease B5.
The area comprises present day Pessu Town, Pessu waterside, Pessu lane, Pessu road, Pessu market, Pessu Market road, Pessu Layout(lkpara) and Pessu garage to mention a few. All these areas which have been fully developed from time immemorial till date were leased out by the Pessu family without any challenge, or encumbrance from anybody whatsoever. Amongst some of those leases was the lease granted by the Pessu family to Chief Eselemo which Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor referred to amongst others.
The Pessu family did not and cannot seek any permission from the Ereku/Ogisi or the family of Chief Dore to give out any portion of their land to anybody. We challenge Chief Rita Lori to produce any documentary evidence to show that Pessu family is a tenant to her family or sought the consent of her family to give out leases in Pessu Town. We also challenge Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor to produce any documentary evidence to show that the already built up lands in Pessu Town were leased out by her family.
Upon advent of the British Government Chief Pessu Ebiowa noticed some trespass upon part of his dry land by the Government and he complained to Chief Dore Numa who then was the leader of the itsekiris but the complain fell on deaf ears. Chief Pessu was later to know that it was a connivance between Chief Dore Numa and the British Government to give part of Pessu Land to the Government for administrative purposes, which said land covered by the 1908 lease B5 was then renamed as Alders Town by the British without the consent of Chief Pessu the original owner.
In the 1922 case of DENEDO, WILLIAM MOORE VS DORE NUMA which bothers on claiming of all land involved in lease B2 and lease B5 in Warri township Chief Pessu who was witness in the said case stated in his evidence as follows: “I belong to Pessu of Warri, I am Jekri (Itsekiri) I do not belong to house of Olu Jekri (Itsekiri). I am descended from the people whom Ginuwa met, I recognize Ginuwa as King. Pessu Town is a portion of the land in dispute. The Olu is overlord over our land. The King must give permission before I can grant lease. I go to Dore if I wish to grant lease. I go to him because he is the man in Town not because he is Olu.”
From the evidence above, it is clear that Chief Pessu is a land owner and never a tenant to anybody in Warri. He was never a tenant to Chief Dore but only goes to him for permission not in his personal capacity as the owner of Pessu land or as his tenant but as a represen!ative of the Olu i.e. the man on ground.
To further buttress that Chief Pessu is a land owner from time immemorial and not a tenant in under any guise the Court in the said case per Hon. Justice JFC Webber made a very profound finding when he held as follows: “Dore has dealt with the peoples land for over 30years and there has not been dissentient voice among them. Chief Pessg a witness for the Plaintiff isJekri (Itsekiri) man but not descended for Olu Itsekiri. HIS LAND IS IN THE LAND IN DISPUTE”
From the above extract of the judgment and findings of the court, it is clear that Chief Pessu is a land owner whose land was part of the land in dispute in the. disputed leases of Lease B2 and B5 and ipso facto he Was never a tenant to anybody in Warri. He was never a tenant to Chief Dore. Chief Dore onlwused his position as the leader of Itsekiri and his relationship with the British Government to trespass and confiscate a portion of his land to the British Government i.e. lease B5 which the court find as a fact was part of the land in dispute.
In all of these cases and agitation aforesaid from land owners in Warri against Chief Dore Numa and the British Government, Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor forefathers Ogisi and Ereku whom she said owned the whole Warri were no
where to be found. They were never part of these cases either as parties on record or witnesses. No land was taken from them by Chief Dore or the British Government, they did not fight the British Government who was annexing peoples land through Chief Dore Numa at the time. Chief Dore is not a relative of Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor and never gave Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor family any land at anytime whatsoever.
The question then is how come her so called ancestors are now the owners of the entire Warri including Pessu Town. What we see here is a desperate person who is trying to take undue advantage of the tension regarding the delineation to grab land that do not belong to her family.
This unfounded claim apart from being repulsive it is capable of triggering a further crises situation which we know the government is working very hard engaging stakeholders to avert.
We therefore urge Your Excellency to disregard the portion of Chief Rita Lori Ogbebor misinformed and mischievous claim that Pessu Town/Community and Pessu tenants are tenants to her family as they are all tissues of lies that ought and be thrown into the dust bin.

…as DESOPADEC boss, Ochonogor calls on residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse

The Managing Director/CEO, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Chief Festus Ochonogor has called on residents of Warri to desist from building and dumping refuse on water channels, stating that the activities of individuals and companies in dumping refuse on water channels has contributed largely to the blockage of water channels in Warri.

He made the call today Thursday July 24th, 2025 in Warri while addressing the media at the commencement of the desilting of Okere road to Esisi road canals by DESOPADEC in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment.

“The Commission has been at the forefront of desilting of canals and blocked drainages in our mandate areas for the past few years and with the prediction of NIMET this year on the impending flooding in various flood prone States in Nigeria including Delta State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has given us directives to intervene with a view to mitigating the impending flood,” he said.

Speaking further, Chief Ochonogor said that the scope of the intervention will include several communities in the Commission’s mandate areas namely Warri, Ughelli, Agbor, Kwale, Osubi, Sapele, Ashaka, Aboh and others.

“We are going to intervene in the flood prone areas in the mandate communities. We have flagged off today in Warri. We shall proceed to other places like Ozoro, Oleh, Kwale, Osubi, Jesse, Sapele amongst others,” he stated further.

Also speaking, the Executive Director Projects, EDP, DESOPADEC, Olorogun Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu called on residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and out right blockage of the water channels, stating that the human factors of deliberately building and dumping refuse on the water ways has contributed immensely to the perennial flooding in our communities.

“I am appealing to our people to avoid this deliberate act. That the Governor has given us the go ahead to intervene notwithstanding, people should adhere strictly to environmental regulations by disposing their waste at the designated points and not on water channels or drainages,” he said.

Dr. Okorodudu further called on various Local Government Councils to intensify measures to discourage residents from engaging in the act of environmental degradation and pollution.

Some residents in Okere road who spoke with DESOPADEC Media commended and applauded His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and the Board of DESOPADEC for the proactive intervention, noting that the exercise will definitely ameliorate the plight of residents especially during the peak period of rain in September.

Mrs. Jane Jacobs, a shop owner near the Okere road bridge said, “We are very happy for this intervention. We thank Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Board of DESOPADEC for this laudable job. We are sure now that we are not going to suffer the devastation we experienced last year. May God bless them.”

Below are pictures from the exercise:

  • AIG sounds strong warning as stakeholders over Warri ward delineation crisis

AIG sounds strong warning as stakeholders over Warri ward delineation crisis

AIG Garba Salma-Dogo, in charge of Zone Five, has met with stakeholders from Warri and environs, as part of efforts to address the crisis over the INEC ward delineation exercise in the area.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO) for the zone comprising Edo and Delta, SP Tijani Momoh, said this in a statement on Friday.

Salma-Dogo explained that the meeting was conveyed at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

He also said that the meeting was conveyed as parts of effort to enhance peace, safety and security in Warri and environs in particular and Delta at large.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to control their youths, and refrain them from making inciting and inflammatory statements, especially on the social media.

He also warned against name-calling and social media protest, saying it will not be tolerated henceforth. According to him, anyone caught will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

He also warned that no ethnic group should refer to another ethnic group as “customary tenants”, adding that any further breakdown of law and order would not be tolerated.

The AIG noted that there was no difference between the Ijaws, Itsekiris and Urhobos and warned all to avoid any issues that would cause a repeat of the 2003/2004 crisis.

Earlier the Commissioner of Police Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, explained that the delineation exercise carried out by INEC in Warri, had brought about problems among the three ethnic groups in the area.

Abaniwonda said he was therefore seeking the intervention of the AIG to help forestall further escalation and break down of law and order.

Other speakers include representatives of Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom, Okere Urhobo Kingdom, Isaba Kingdom, Agbarha Warri Kingdom, Gbaramatu kingdom, and the three local government chairmen.

All speakers sued for peace, saying that they do not want a crisis in the area.

They also noted that the delineation exercise had not been finalised, and that INEC had asked all aggrieved parties to study the draft and bring up their complaints, observations and contributions.

They unanimously agreed to work for the peace and security of Warri kingdom, and pledged to call their youths to order.

Present at the meeting also were the Area Commander Warri, the Local Government Chairmen of Warri South West, Warri North and Warri South, as well as the spokesperson and representative of Gbaramatu Kingdom.

Others were the representative from the Palace of the Olu of Warri, the Pere of Ogbe-Ijoh among other highly placed figures.

During the event, the chairman also demonstrated the proper way to hang and use an insecticide-treated net, urging residents to replicate the process in their homes to protect themselves from mosquito bites and reduce the incidence of malaria.

  • Warri wards delineation: Ijaw, Urhobo leaders call for thorough probe of arms smuggling involving ‘British Army Officer’, others

Warri wards delineation: Ijaw, Urhobo leaders call for thorough probe of arms smuggling involving ‘British Army Officer’, others

Leaders of Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri, Delta State , on Wednesday, jointly called on the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) as well as the office of the National Security Adviser, to ensure transparent investigation into the arrest of persons, including a serving British Army Officer for illegally bringing in arms to instigate unrest in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State.

Addressing a joint press conference in Warri, the leaders alleged that the attempt to smuggle weapons was part of a plot to disrupt the Supreme Court-mandated process of redrawing electoral wards and polling units.

The press statement, read by Olorogun Victor Okumagba and supported by Hon. Denbo-Denbofa Oweikpodor, was signed by prominent ethnic leaders, including Comrade Sheriff Mulade, Hon. (Chief) Arthur Akpodubakaye, Joel Bisina, Comrade Emmanuel Igetei (Urhobo), Chief John Eranvor, Hon. Mark Ikpuri, and Chief Westham Adehor.

They pointed out that a traditional ruler from Warri Federal Constituency and his close aides are allegedly involved in this arms conspiracy, and that these individuals have yet to deny their involvement despite several days passing.

The leaders maintained that the Ijaw and Urhobo communities in Warri are primary targets of those behind the arms stockpiling, which they view as an attempt to destabilize Warri.

They claimed  that the plot to smuggle arms into Warri was a move to truncate the Supreme Court ordered fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units.

“We therefore, commend the proactive efforts of the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) and sister security forces that carried out the covet operations leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

“The Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri call for detailed investigation and prosecution of the those behind this act of terrorism, irrespective of the position and class of the persons involved. We demand that, under no circumstances should this matter be swept under the carpet considering its grave implications on regional and national security.

“The office of the National Security Adviser is called upon to be transparent in the investigation and prosecution of the culprits. We demand that the Nigerian people, especially the people and residents of Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State deserve to have an official reaction from the government of Nigeria on the issue of illegal stockpiling of arms to instigate crisis in Warri.

The leaders who were drawn from Warri North, Warri South and Warri South West Local Government Areas of the state, stated that the press conference was in reaction to the report of the fieldwork on the fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units as ordered by the Supreme Court and recent report of threat to peace and security arising from the fresh delineation.

They commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the steps taken so far towards complying with the Supreme Court order on fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units.

They frown at alleged attempts by Itsekiri ethnic nationality to frustrate the implementation of the Supreme Court order, maintaining that INEC has demonstrated its commitment and respect for the rule of law by taking necessary steps to comply with the Supreme Court order.

“We further note that, the report of the fieldwork by INEC confirms the obvious fact on ground, which is that, the Ijaws constitute the majority population in Warri North and Warri South-West Local Government Areas, while the Urhobos constitute the majority population in Warri South Local Government Area. We commend INEC for standing by the truth and justice”.

They called on INEC to complete the process of the fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units in the Warri Federal Constituency and release its final decision without further delay.

“It is the position of the Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri that, there should not be any electoral activity including registration of voters in the Warri Federal Constituency without completion of the fresh delineation as ordered by the Supreme Court. Our position is predicated on the ground that, without completion of the fresh delineation exercise, there are no existing electoral wards and polling units upon which any electoral activity can be predicated upon, including registration of voters.

On the call by Itsekiri for the use of voters register for the fresh delineation exercise, the Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri noted that the register of voters which existed before the Supreme Court ordered fresh delineation ought to be used as a basis to carry out the fresh delineation.

“We equivocally oppose the agitation for the use of non-existent register of voters as basis to carry out the fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units. The agitation is against the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Act, 2022, the INEC Guidelines dated the 21st day of March, 2024 and the essence of the fieldwork on the fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units.

“The primary consideration for the delineation of electoral wards and polling units is the population quota/number of inhabitants and other physical consideration of the areas concerned.

“Furthermore, it is our position that, based on the Supreme Court order on fresh delineation of wards and polling units, there is no longer any existing register of voters in the Warri Federal Constituency upon which any activity can be predicated upon.

“We therefore urge INEC to stick to the law and its Guidelines and not to succumb to the Itsekiri blackmail and misleading agitations to rely on register of voters. The field work carried out by INEC and other existing public records clearly revealed the majority population status of the Ijaws and Urhobos in Warri North, Warri South West and Warri South LGAs respectively.

“Furthermore, the register of voters was not one of the items considered during the field work on the fresh delineation. Also, the Itsekiris have not complained that any of their communities or settlements was omitted in the report of the fieldwork presented by INEC. It therefore means that, the Itsekiri voter register based agitation against the INEC field work report is baseless and lacks any legal foundation.

They further alleged attempts by the Itsekiris to blackmail INEC to carry out the delineation on their terms and trying to instigate crisis in Warri, claiming that attempt to disrupt oil and gas operations in some parts of Delta State, persistent media attacks on INEC and instigating some Yoruba Groups to issue reckless press statements were moves to blackmail the electoral umpire.

They urged the Federal Government to consider the attempt to disrupt oil and gas operations as a result of compliance with the order of the Supreme Court as an act of terrorism and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We state that, Nigeria is not a Banana Republic where the orders of the Supreme Court would be obeyed at the pleasure and on the conditions of an ethnic group. All persons and authorities including the Federal Government is bound by the orders of the Supreme Court on the fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units.

“Therefore, any attempt to frustrate the implementation of the judgment by attempting to attack national assets should be regarded as a threat to national security and the perpetrators brought to justice.

“We condemn the reckless statement issued by some purported Pan Yoruba Groups where they threatened the peace and security of the Niger Delta region as a result of the Supreme Court ordered delineation. We are aware that all these threats are the desperate actions of some Itsekiri leaders and should be ignored by the government.

“We also call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu not to allow its office to be blackmailed by the Itsekiris in their desperate attempt to truncate the Supreme Court ordered delineation. Any attempt to frustrate the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment on the fresh delineation is a direct invitation to anarchy by whoever that is involved. The Presidency must distant itself from any such act and allow INEC to carry out its functions in line with section 160 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as an independent agency of the federal government.

“The Federal Government should be reminded that the relocation of the Headquarters of Warri South West Local Government Area from Ogbe-Ijoh to Ogidigben, which was instigated by the Itsekiris led to the fratricidal war in Warri from 1997 to 2003 which snowballed into the Niger Delta crisis. Therefore, we warn against any attempt to change the Ijaw and Urhobo majority status in Warri North, Warri South West and Warri South Local Government Areas, respectively as revealed by the INEC report of its field work on the fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units”, they warned.

Ijaws take position on INEC’s ward delineation in Warri

Ijaw ethnic nationality in Warri, Delta, have urged Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to go ahead with the delineation of wards in Warri Federal Constituency, as ordered by the Supreme Court.

The Ijaw indigenes, at a peaceful rally which ended at INEC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, commended INEC for not jettison the apex court judgment delivered since 2022.

Spokesperson for the  group, Chief David Reje, commended INEC for carrying all communities and stakeholders in the constituency along.

He said that they were surprised that some people were saying INEC never consulted some stakeholders in the constituency over the exercise.

Reje said that the commission should be commended for committing itself to inclusivity, the rule of law and the principles of good governance.

“INEC has really taken it upon itself to engage all the stakeholders of the nationalities of the Ijaws, the Itsekiris, and the Urhobos.

“You formed a committee, you went down, you were engaging them differently, and they were heavily represented by their leaders and their traditional rulers.

“At the end of it, INEC made out time to go to the communities of all the nationalities of the Itsekiri, the Ijaws and the Urhobos.

“And by your fieldwork, you have been able to come out with a proposed document somehow, a proposed report.

“We found out that some people are trying to become funny, as if they were not involved in the whole process.

“We were all involved in the whole process, in Warri, in Asaba, and in everything. And everybody has given their assent to the process to be carried out,’’ he said.

He urged INEC to implement its report and recommendations, saying gone are the days when wards were allocated.

“Today, wards are given through diligent ward delineation process, which is first of all carried out.

“So we have come to appreciate you and to let the public know that you never did any job in the classroom, or in the bedroom, or in the room, the private room.

“It was a public work, a public assignment, demonstrated by mostly going through the creeks, or the nooks and crannies of the three areas,’’ he said.

Reje urged all stakeholders in the constituency to cooperate with INEC in carrying out the exercise.

“Let’s work together as Nigerians, as brothers and sisters in a federal constituency to make sure that we build an environment that is politically endowed with the beauty of political democracy and freedom,” he said.

Addressing the protesters, INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, pledged that INEC would continue to do the right thing.

“We want to thank you most sincerely for coming here as one of the major stakeholders in this discussion. Thank you for appreciating what the commission has done so far.

“We want to assure you that as a commission, we are dedicated to doing what is right as far as democracy in Nigeria is concerned.

“God willing, we will ensure that democracy, at the end of the day, is what decides everything that we do,” Zuru said.

Also present was National Commissioner, Malam Mohammed Haruna, and other INEC management staff.
