Ward Delineation: Former Warri assembly leader shares permanent solution to end prolong crisis

Ijabor Sylvester, a former Leader Warri South Legislative Assembly, has asserted that the government should allocate the Ijaws, Itsekiris, and Urhobos its own local governments to end the crisis in Warri.

Sylvester said this in a joint interview with ARISE NEWS on Saturday amidst the ongoing delineation of electoral wards and polling units in the Warri federal constituency, Delta State.

The move, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) understands, is to implement a ruling of the Supreme Court, ordering the electoral umpire to reassign wards and polling units across Warri South, Warri South West and Warri North local government areas.

The delineationprocess began on Monday in Warri, with the INEC national chairman, Yakubu Mahmood, saying the commission was ready and the three ethnic groups were prepared.

Speaking of whether the delineation considers the historical peculiarities of the Warri region, Slyvester stressed that the Tribunal of Inquiries is meant to correct certain injustices in court pronouncements and not agitate people.

He explained that the court judgement, especially during the colonial eras, was not interested in justice but only in the governance of convenience, fronting anything that threatened tax collection.

The former legislative leader further noted that evidence and events have proven that the groups are of different tribes and can not be under the Olu of Warri but are separated in local governments.

He said, ‘’All the Tribunal of inquires that have been set up in Warri have always required one thing: give them their separate local government because events and evidence on the ground have shown that they are different tribes and can not be under the Olu of Warri. This will solve the dispute permanently.”

The itsekiri continue to insist that the Warri kingdom belongs to them and that this delineation by INEC of electoral wards and polling units in Warri North, south and South West local government, as ordered by the Supreme Court on December 2nd 2022, is an attempt by the Ijaws and the Urhobos to grab more powers in Warri kingdom.

On his part,  Imuere Ejiro, a researcher on Warri Township Uroboho colonial history, maintained that the supreme court order resulted from the fallout of the foundational problem of Warri, which was heightened between 1997 and 2002.

He added that the desire of the three tribes to undermine one other politically is the result of this crisis. He argued that the Olu of Warri, the monarch of the Isekiri people, is using his throne as an advantage to claim ownership of the region politically.

He pointed out that for the Olu of Warri to be afraid of wards being delineated in his constituency shows that they have something to hide, highlighting how worrisome it was that they went to court to return Warri south to 10 wards from 12 wards.

Warri channel now under 24-hour surveillance – Navy

Commodore Rotimi Oderemi, the Commander, Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, has said that the entire Warri Channel, adjoining creeks and islands are now under 24 hours naval surveillance.

Oderemi said this in Calabar when the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River Council, visited him.

The commander said that the navy had also ensured mobile patrols around the Eastern Naval Command to ensure the safety of artisans, fishermen and other legitimate water users.

“I am proud to tell you that the entire warri channel, the adjoining creeks and islands now enjoy 24hours naval presence.

“This is to ensure that the waterways are safe for users. It is also to ensure that the waterways are uncomfortable for criminals and economic saboteurs,” he said.

Oderemi thanked NUJ for their readiness to partner the Nigerian Navy to project its activities and successes to the public.

He said that as stakeholders in national development, NNS Victory was ready to support the activities of NUJ beyond security lines.

On her part, Mrs Archibong Bassey, Chairman of NUJ, Cross River Council, said the visit was to re-enact synergy between the navy and the media in the state.

Bassey commended the navy for its role in ensuring that the challenge of crude oil theft was reasonably tackled.

She said that naval personnel put their lives on the line to checkmate economic sabotage along the nation’s waterways.

“We have observed that sea piracy has reduced drastically, those who travel by boat from Calabar to Oron in Akwa Ibom can testify to this,” she said.

The NUJ chairman also thanked the navy for being proactive in the campaign against illegal oil bunkering in the South-South region.

Stop spending like rich people when you don’t invest like them – Erigga

Nigerian hip-hop star,Erigga  has said that the that rich  and  the poor  live in different worlds because rich people invest and read unlike people living in poverty.

The Warri-born rapper stated that the reason many people remain poor is because as rich people are spending their money, poor people also spend like them even when they do not invest the same way.

Erigga advised people living in poverty as he rubbished the common belief that the reason, they are broke and struggling is because of generational curses, adding that it is more like a generational bad habit.

    He said;

“Rich people invest. You don’t invest. Rich people read. You don’t read. Rich people delay gratification. You don’t delay gratification.

But, when they spend, you want to spend too. When they flex, you want to flex too. When they party, you want to party too. And that is why you are poor. It has nothing to do with generational curses and everything to do with generational bad habits.”

” Rich people invest. You don’t invest.

Rich people read. You don’t read.

Rich people delay gratification. You don’t delay gratification.

What Warri Again organizers did is a shame – Davido

Popular Nigerian singer, David Adeleke aka Davido has said what organizers of the Warri Again show in Delta State did was a shame.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Davido, however, tendered an apology for disappointing his “lovely fans” in Warri after they had spent their hard earned money for the show.

This is coming after former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF) Amaju Pinnick called out the singer for refusing to perform at this year’s Warri Again festival.

Pinnick revealed Davido was paid $94,600 for the show and that the organisers booked a private jet for him for $18,000.

He threatened to teach the singer a lesson, adding that he was becoming too proud despite not being a bigger artist than Burna Boy who is half Itsekiri.

However, via a Story on Instagram, Davido disclosed he had informed organizers of Warri Again that he was not going to be physically able to make it but that they went on to continue using his name to promo the show.

Davido stated: “To my lovely fans in Warri that spent their hard earned money to come out, apologies you had to experience this.

“I was not going to be physically able to make it and this had been communicated to ‘them’ for a longgggg while now. I mean months ago.

“But for reasons best known to them, they continued to promote the show using my name. It’s a shame.

“But specially for my fans out there, don’t worry, you know I gotta bring Timeless to Delta State. We will do it proper, bigger and better”.

Earlier, Davido had bragged  nobody can stop him from performing anywhere in Nigeria, assuring his fans in Warri that he would be in their city soon.

“Nobody can stop me from performing anywhere in Nigeria… Warri I will see you soon,” he wrote.

BREAKING: After disappointing, Davido set to thrill in Warri

Popular Nigerian artist, David Adedeji Adeleke OON, professionally known as Davido, has revealed plans to thrill the people of Warri in a live performance very soon.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Davido made the disclosure on Saturday in a terse statement shared via a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“Nobody can stop me from performing anywhere in Nigeria; Warri, I will see you soon,” Davido posted without details about the event.

TNG reports the former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick had called out Davido for collecting money from the organizers of Warri Again but did not show up.

Pinnick claimed he paid the singer $94,000 and booked a plane with $18000 for him to convey him and his team to Delta State, yet he did not turn up, which is a big blow to the city of Warri.

Venting out, he stated that upcoming rapper, Shallipopi had stepped in, replacing Davido as the headliner.

He also accused the singer of being egoistic as he compared him to his rival, Burna Boy, who he stated was far above him.

“We paid Davido $94,600 on the 6th of April. We paid $18,000 for his plane. If he says he’s a big boy, we will tell him we are bigger than him.

“I’m not joking. So, while he was playing his games back and forth, we decided to hunt to find another artiste, Shallipopi.

“You see, when people say they are big, I’m amazed. Is Burna Boy not the biggest artiste in Nigeria today? Burna Boy is half Itsekiri. Burna Boy’s paternal grandmother is Itsekiri. So, he’s bigger than him (Davido).

“Is there anyone bigger than RMD in the acting industry? Or someone bigger than Ali Baba in the comedy industry?

“We have stars aplenty in Warri. Nobody is bigger than Warri,” Pinnick said.

The popular artist was also called out for doing the same thing in Jos in 2019.

It was gathered that Davido agreed to perform at Jos Chillin and was paid, but he did not turn up.

Although he refunded the money, the organizers of Jos Chillin reported losses, and the integrity of the organizers was questioned by those who bought tickets.

LG boss hails approval of reconstruction of Warri roads

Dr Michael Tidi, Chairman, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta, says the approval of the reconstruction of some failed major roads in Warri will restore its lost glory.

Tidi, in a statement issued on Thursday in Warri, thanked the state government for the approval, noting that the gesture would boost socio-economic activities in the metropolis.

The Delta Executive Council presided over by Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori at the council’s inaugural meeting on Wednesday, approved the reconstruction of the Upper/Lower Erejuwa Road.

Others are: rehabilitation of Esisi Road from the Warri/Sapele Road, to Estate Roundabout and Nana College, linking Ajamimogha Road.

The council chairman said that the state governor had started his campaign promises of restoring the lost glory of the oil-bearing city, and urged the people to support the government.

Tidi said that his administration had carried out several remedial works within the available limited resources through direct labour, to fix the Esisi Road and Estate Roundabout.

“The Upper/Lower Erejuwa Road, Esisi Road and Ajamimogha Road were constructed several decades ago by the late Samuel Ogbemudia administration of the defunct Bendel State.

“The roads connect major markets and other vital commercial investments in Warri, the economic nerve center of Delta,” he said.

He, however, urged residents to create the enabling environment to ensure actualisation of the project.

  • The Benin-Sapele-Warri road nightmare – By Hope Eghagha

The Benin-Sapele-Warri road nightmare – By Hope Eghagha

Traveling from Lagos through the East-West Road to Warri is a nightmare for commuters. This is because travelers are compelled to waste three to six hours on the two kilometer-road stretch in the small sleepy town of Ologbo because the road has simply failed. Perhaps failed is an understatement. There is no road. There is no road in a place that used to be the envy of other road users, a road that was commissioned in 2007 amidst fanfare.

There are gullies and craters, filled with rainwater in that section of the expressway. Expressway? I refer to what used to be an expressway! The ground is marshy. But the first shock on that road starts from the by-pass end of Benin City. It was reported weeks ago that the vehicles of Edo state governor got stuck there. What exactly is going on? The Benin bypass and the dualization of the Benin-Sapele-Warri highway was commissioned in 2007 by President Olusegun Obasanjo, and it cost N11.8 billion naira. Generally, the road needs to be worked on. So, it is not only Ologbo that calls for urgent attention. The Delta State government had in the past intervened at the Sapele Warri end as well as the Oghara section of the road. But the elephant in the room is the almighty federal government!

Over five hundred products-moving tankers are stuck at the Ologbo end at any given time. Most bear petroleum products. If an explosion occurs in that chaotic scene, too many lives and property would be lost. Yet anyone who sits through the ordeal feels the degree of danger in the whole environment. It is a story of the jungle – no order, no control, no authority. We return the base nature of man. The pervasive authority is that of hopelessness, the kind of hopelessness that makes desperation a way of life! Survival of the fittest is the rule. Tempers flare up, sometimes. There are curses rained on the absent federal government. Curses are rained on the Edo and Delta States governments by some too. Travelers argue that the governors of both states ought to synergize and lift the burden off their citizens. The road is federal government owned. Edo State government has put up a sign board which announces to the world that the road is the property of the federal government. Delta State section is not as affected. Yet, the road is a nightmare to any commuter who is returning to the oil-bearing zone of Delta State.

Sometimes, agberos do what could pass for traffic control. Sometimes a big man shows up and his police orderlies clear the way for him. He then zooms off, leaving the ordinary people in utter bewilderment. An army officer in his official vehicle shows up. His men clear the way, using threats and threats of violence. Smal and medium sized vehicles belonging to the private citizens, or which are used for commercial transportation take a beating. How did this expressway degenerate into a death trap for all travelers to Warri on the East-West Road? Why is the Niger Delta, the goose which lays the golden egg for Nigeria, so neglected, abandoned, and denigrated? Minority agitation will never go away as long as we have acts of injustice!

Sadly, this is the only route available for travelers going from Lagos to Warri. Some other travelers connect to Port Harcourt and Aba through this route especially if they want to beat the Monday sit-at-home order in the southeast. The strategic importance of this road to the economy of the region cannot be overemphasized. Warri is home to a dormant oil refinery. The road leads to oil wells in the Delta region without which the nation will crumble. Ologbo where the road has failed completely is in Edo State. Last year, the youths of that community vented their frustration on travelers when they blocked the road to catch the attention of the federal government. Nothing has changed.

The road should be declared an emergency. Senators and other federal legislators from the region should take this upon themselves and act on behalf of the citizenry. President Tinubu will never travel on that road. He may not be aware of the condition of the road. Representatives of Edo and Delta states in Abuja must rise to the occasion. Of course, the Number One person must be the State governors whose duty it is to cajole the federal government into saving the poor commuters on this fundamental artery in the body of the region.

This kind of failure exists in some other parts of the country. I once traveled by road from Abuja to Minna and was appalled that a town that plays host to two former Heads of State could be that terrible. Fundamental to this conversation is whether the federal government has any business controlling roads within the geographical space of states. What sense does it make to say that the portion of the road in question which is inside Benin belongs to the federal government? What sense does it make to say that the Oshodi-Mile Two Expressway is federal government property? A federal government that is already overwhelmed by the heavy burden of governing amorphous territories with an inefficient bureaucracy cannot deliver on road construction. The FG is too far from the scene of disastrous roads. This is an anachronism from our days of big government which we believed has the resources to do just about everything. The notion, interpretation and practice of federalism should be revisited. This is the time to remind President Tinubu about his promise to tinker with certain aspects of the 1999 Federal Constitution. There should be devolution of power to the constituent parts of the federation. He has been an advocate of this move since his days as a senator and later as governor. With a stroke of the pen as it were, states would no longer be incapacitated in managing their affairs because of an obnoxious provision in the Constitution.

Sixty odd years after independence, no road in the country should be in such a state of debilitating disrepair. It impacts the economy negatively. It is a risk to lives. It is dangerous to health. It lengthens the time for goods delivery. It also increases the cost of doing business in that axis. It is another indication of failed leadership. It is something we should be ashamed of. If the federal roads concept must be retained, we should restore road camps which will make urgent intervention possible.

Finally, the Benin-Sapele-Warri Road deserves urgent attention both for the sake of the economy and the lives of the thousands of commuters who are compelled to travel that road daily or weekly. The state governors, elected, and appointed representatives from the region should ensure that this nightmare ends. Whereas they can afford to fly in and out of the towns, the millions of ordinary folks from the area cannot afford that luxury!

  • We’ll restore Warri’s lost glory – Oborevwori

    We’ll restore Warri’s lost glory – Oborevwori

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, on Sunday said his administration would restore the lost glory of Warri, Uvwie and its environs through massive infrastructural renewal and environmental sustainability.

Oborevwori, accompanied by his wife, Tobore, and other top government functionaries, stated this at the thanksgiving service in honour of the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Redemption Hall, Mega Parish, Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the State.

The Governor said he was delighted to join the Speaker and his family in thanking God for his elevation as number one lawmaker in the State. He said God is always pleased when men gave thanks to Him and admonished the Speaker to hold on to God in his private and public life.

Speaking on flooding in Warri and environs, Governor Oborevwori said his administration would demolish all structures built along waterways and warned against dumping of refuse on drainages to give way for free flow of flood water in the area.

He said: “A few days ago, I was sent a viral video on the flooded Airport Road in Warri which of course was caused by our people because they have built structures along waterways.

“They have also blocked drainage channels with refuse but I can assure you that drainages in Warri will be taken care of and flood will no longer disturb our people when we are through.

“We will rebuild infrastructures in Warri with good roads, flyovers, drainages and street lights and we shall restore the lost glory of the oil city”.

The Governor, while rejoicing with the Speaker and his family, urged him to trust God in his private and public life and to remain humble and accountable to his colleagues.

“For you to survive as Speaker, as a leader, you must be humble, transparent and accountable and it is on record that I paid N530 million into the treasury and I also left money in the coffers of the State House of Assembly.

“There is no House of Assembly in the Country that has done what I did and it is my prayer that you succeed and perform better than I did.

“I survived six years as Speaker because I had a good Governor who listens and I urge you to always do the right thing despite pressures.

“As Governor, I am committed to the welfare of the legislature and we will work together to make life more meaningful for our people,” he said.

Earlier in his remark, Speaker Guwor thanked his guests for honouring his invitation and expressed gratitude to God for elevating him to number one lawmaker
