  • We need over 720M gallons of water per day in Lagos – Ambode

We need over 720M gallons of water per day in Lagos – Ambode

…Says Huge Resources Already Committed To Making Water Available

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said his administration remains committed to bridging the daily deficit of potable water in the State without inflicting tax burden on the people, just as he revealed that huge investments have been made in the sector in the last 23 months.

Speaking at Lagos House in Ikeja when he received a delegation from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) led by its President, Dr Frank Udemba Jacobs, Governor Ambode said the State requires about 720million gallons of water per day, but currently has capacity to produce 210million leaving a deficit of about 500 million gallons.

It would be recalled that the present administration since assumption of office had intensified investments in the water sector especially by putting measures in place to revamp the 48 Mini Water Works across the State to produce at hundred per cent, while works on the Adiyan Major Water Works had reached advanced stage.

The Governor said ever since coming on board, conscious efforts have been made towards improving on the business environment by investing in critical sectors such as infrastructure, security, traffic management, among others, saying that investment in the water sector too had been huge.

He said: “Just like every other infrastructure that we are trying to create in the city, water is one of them and obviously it is clear that we have a deficit. The city actually needs a minimum of 720million gallons of water per day and right now, there is a shortfall of almost about 500million and so our investment in water sector is continuous and very deep.

“The truth is that despite being surrounded by water, the infrastructure that drives the water to become a drinkable item is huge and we do not want to tax people to death and at the same time within the limited resources in a recession, we are faced with that challenge of wanting to redistribute the limited resources in the various sectors and sometimes the gap is yet to be filled in that sector.

“I do recognize the fact that we need to be on top of our game in terms of providing water and I also recognize the fact that we are not yet in a place where we ought to be but again, we must understand that within that shortcoming, government tries as much as possible to find a way to create laws or create an enabling environment to allow water to be available everywhere,” Governor Ambode said.

While responding to enquiries by the delegation on charges on water, Governor Ambode said the intention of laws regulating the water sector was not to bring any inconvenience to the people, and that government would be willing to put measures in place to resolve any issue amicably with the aim of making businesses to continue to operate in the State.

The Governor also reiterated his commitment to continue to engage with the private sector through various platforms as well as the Corporate Assembly which the State had already put in place to interface with the business community.

Earlier, MAN President (Jacobs) said the delegation was at Lagos House to further build on the existing cordial relationship with the State Government.

Jacobs commended Governor Ambode over his untiring and exemplary efforts at making Lagos the centre of excellence especially in areas of infrastructural transformation, adding that the investments had greatly helped to create conducive environment for the manufacturing sector to thrive in the State.

He said: “We applaud Governor Ambode’s policies and programmes and pledge to continue to work with government in moving the State forward.”

Governor Ambode, who also received Mr. Edward Kallon, UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Residential Representative in Nigeria, said as the fifth largest economy in Africa, his administration would collaborate with necessary organizations such as UN to scale up the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), adding that his plan for the State is to emerge as the third largest economy within the next three to five years.

  • Children should drink more water, not carbonated drinks – Medical Expert

Dr Safiya Ojo, General Practitioner, Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, has advised parents to ensure their children and wards drink more water instead of carbonated drinks to avoid dehydration.

She gave the advice on Friday in Abuja in an interview with the newsmen.

She said that dehydration is loss of body fluids mostly water.

She added that dehydration occurs when our cells and body lose more water than what we take in by drinking water.

“We lose water every day in the form of water vapour in the breath we exhale and in our excreted sweat, urine, and stool.

“Along with the water, small amounts of salt are also lost.

“If a child is vomiting and excreting watery stool and not able to drink water, that child can lose fluids quickly and become very sick.

“When we lose too much water, our bodies may be out of balance or dehydrated; severe dehydration can lead to death,’’ Ojo said.

According to Ojo, mild to moderate dehydration can happen easily in young children particularly if the child has diarrhea or is vomiting.

She listed the symptoms of dehydration to include dry, cracked lips, dry mouth, decrease in urine output, no urine for 8 to 12 hours, or dark-coloured urine, drowsiness or irritability

Others she said added, include cold or dry skin, low energy levels, seeming very weak or limp, no tears when crying and sunken eyes.

Ojo said: “drinking adequate amount of water daily is important for overall good health because water aids in digestion, circulation, absorption and even excretion.

“ Water is the main component of the human body. In fact, the body is composed of between 55 and 78 per cent water, depending on body size.

“Adequate and regular water consumption has numerous health benefits.

“As an added plus, water has no calories, fat, carbohydrates or sugar,’’

The medical practitioner explained that the amount of water an individual consume everyday plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body.

She said that experts recommend drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day to maintain good health.

  • Lagos Water Corporation to commence metering of houses in 2017

The Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Mr Muminu Badmus, on Friday said the corporation would start metering of houses for water consumption by February 2017.

Badmus spoke at the Corporation’s end of year news conference in Lagos, projecting that some 16,000 meters would be installed in houses in 2017.

According to him, the metering of houses will start in seven zones of the state.

“The seven zones are Surulere, Itire, Yaba-Ebute Metta-Iwaya zones and Victoria Island, Victoria Island Annex and parts of Lekki Phase 1.

“These zones are undergoing rehabilitation and Expansion of Distribution Network under the loan of National Urban Water Sector Reform Project (2NUWSRP).

“The State is currently running an Infrastructure Support Project with Lagos Water Corporation being the executing agency under the loan,’’ he said.

Badmus said that the Infrastructure Support Project was being managed by the Corporation’s Projects Implementation Unit.

He said that the metering of houses in the zones would clear the confusion on how much water the houses were getting.

Badmus said that it would also address the claim of some residents of not getting water in their area at all.

He said that it would also help in the residents’ usage of water as there was a lot of water wastage in the system.

The managing director said that once the metering started it would be completed within three months.

  • Army reacts to viral video of soldiers begging Buhari for food, water

*Video was shot 6 months ago by disgruntled elements, says army

The Nigerian Army has reacted to a viral video of soldiers begging President Muhammadu Buhari for water and food.

The video, which was obtained by TheNewsGuru.com showed several soldiers at Alargarno in Borno State, some of them already fainted and receiving medical care.

However, following the release of the video to the public, the Nigerian Army said the problem was caused by a mischievous soldier, who had since been punished.

In a statement late on Tuesday by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, the army said, “We wish to state that the video clip was shot more than six months ago by some mischievous and disgruntled elements when 29 Task Force Brigade captured Alagarno Forest and environs in Borno State.

“It is disheartening that some mischievous elements have decided to circulate it now, creating the false impression that it is a recent occurrence.

“We wish to state further that the matter was conclusively investigated at the time, several months ago. The Board of Inquiry actually showed that, as of the time of the incident, the unit’s water tanker still contained water, but a soldier mischievously concealed it. That soldier was charged and punished accordingly.

“In addition to the unit’s water tanker, a borehole was subsequently drilled at the location and it is still serving both the military and adjoining communities.

“We wish to restate with utmost concern the continued commitment of the Nigerian Army to the total welfare of all its personnel.”
