Super Eagles star ruled out of AFCON

Super Eagles star, Oghenekaro Etebo, has been ruled out of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Etebo was forced off injured during Watford’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Nigeria international was replaced by compatriot Emmanuel Dennis in the match.

Watford, in a statement on their official website, confirmed his injury.

“Midfielder Peter Etebo tore a quad muscle towards the end of the Newcastle United game last weekend and is expected to be out for between four to five months,” the club wrote.

With this, he will miss at least 17 English top-flight fixtures for the Hornets.

EPL: Tottenham maintain perfect start after Watford win

Son Heung-min marked his 200th Premier League appearance with the winning goal as Tottenham maintained their 100% start to the season against Watford.

The result means Spurs will top the table heading into September’s international break, while Watford are 12th.

It also sees Nuno Espirito Santo become just the second Tottenham boss to win his first three league games in charge of the club, with the last man to accomplish that feat being Arthur Rowe in 1949.

But they were made to work hard for their victory by an accomplished Watford side who were unfortunate to concede when Son’s inswinging free-kick deceived goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann and found the bottom-right corner.

While Harry Kane was unusually quiet on his first top-flight start this term for Tottenham, Steven Bergwijn, Eric Dier and Dele Alli all had chances for the hosts.

However, Xisco Munoz’s side offered plenty of attacking threat of their own.

Juraj Kucka twice failed to capitalise on good opportunities to score and Emmanuel Dennis also gave Spurs some uncomfortable moments.

Watford’s latest Nigerian striker reveals Ighalo influence

Striker Dapo Mebude has revealed Odion Ighalo influenced his decision to sign for Watford, after the youngster left Rangers for the Hornets earlier this week.

In an interview with the club, the teenager referred to the 32-year-old as one of the players who attracted him to the club.

Ighalo played for Watford from 2014-2017, making 82 appearances, scoring 33 goals in the process, and latterly featured back in the Premier League for Manchester United.

On July 10, the 19-year-old Mebude, who is of a Nigerian descent, joined the Hornets, from Rangers, on a two-year contract, with a further two-year option. He is still eligible to play for the West African nation, despite featuring for Scotland at youth level.

“[Watford are] a massive club, I have watched them in the Premier League for a few years,” Mebude told the club’s official portal. “I have been a fan of the Premier League and watched players like Troy Deeney, and Odion Ighalo who is a countryman of mine, so there are a lot of things that attracted me.

“I like to take bits from different players’ games. Obviously, I want to be myself but I take parts from Raheem Sterling, Ronaldo [the original]… but I want to be myself and hopefully one day, people can look up to me and say they want to be like me.”

Watford are ready to welcome back Ashley Young from Inter Milan.

Former Manchester United captain Young, 35, is poised to leave Inter Milan this summer when his contract expires.

Watford are ready to offer an initial 12-month deal if they secure promotion back to the Premier League, says the Daily Mail.

Xisco’s men currently occupy the second automatic promotion spot in the Championship, seven points clear of third-placed Brentford with just five games to play.

Watford want to add top-flight experience to their squad if they can bounce straight back into the Premier League.

Young joined Watford as a 10-year-old and made 110 senior appearances before joining Aston Villa for £9.65million in 2007.

Liverpool agreed personal terms with Watford attacker – Agent

Liverpool had agreed personal terms with Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr in January, it has been revealed.

Sarr was on the verge of joining Liverpool in the January transfer window before the Premier League champions balked at his £35 million price-tag, according to his agent Thierno Seydi.

Seydi told PanAfrican Football: “With Liverpool, a few days ago, we were at the stage of signing the contract to bind the Reds to Ismaila Sarr.

“Everything was done, the monthly salary and the length of the contract. I even asked Sadio Mane to find him an apartment.

“But, in the end, the English club could not put 40 million euros (£35 million) on the table to finalise this case.”

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has taken to social media to say his goodbyes to Serie A club Udinese as he nears a move to Championship side Watford.

The 27-year-old centre-back has been with the Little Zebras since the 2018-19 season, when he joined from Turkish outfit Bursaspor.

He has been a regular fixture in the Udinese squad since then, racking up 66 appearances in all competitions, all which have seen the club comfortably avoid relegation, finishing 12th and 13th, with 43 and 45 points, in respective seasons.

Troost-Ekong’s time in Udine is, however, coming to an end with an eminent switch to Vicarage Road as reported by Watford Observer, set to be completed soon.

“Good morning! Just a few words to thank everyone. After two special years, the time has come to change and leave,” he said in a video posted on Instagram.

“Special thanks to all my friends and teammates, the staff, the club and of course our fans. Thanks a lot to everyone and good luck to Udinese. Forza Udinese always. A big hug. Your Willy.
