McClaren names Wayne Rooney sole manager of Derby

Wayne Rooney will be in charge of Derby County on Saturday for their clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

Manchester United legend Rooney, 35, had been taking charge of the Championship strugglers along with Liam Rosenior following the sacking of Phillip Cocu earlier this month.

But just two days after arriving as technical director at Pride Park, Steve McClaren has decided the partnership was not working and handed Rooney full control by himself.

Rooney has the job at least until the proposed takeover of Derby by Sheikh Khaled Zayed Bin Saquer Zayed Al Nayhan, a member of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family.

That £60million deal still needs to be signed off by the football authorities after current owner Mel Morris agreed to sell up at the start of November.

  • Rooney denies former teammate, says Messi better than Ronaldo

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has declared his support for Barcelona star Lionel Messi above his ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rooney believes Messi is a cut above the “incredible” Ronaldo because the Barcelona man “will torture you before he kills you.”

Rooney and Ronaldo tormented defences during time as team-mates in an outstanding Manchester United side before the Portugal forward joined Real Madrid in 2009.

They spent a total of five seasons together at Old Trafford, a spell that yielded three Premier League titles and Champions League glory in 2007-8, a feat that sealed Ronaldo’s first Ballon d’Or.

The Derby County skipper wrote in his Sunday Times column: “Ronaldo wasn’t as focused on goals when we started playing together but you could see that all he wanted was to be the best player in the world.

“He practised and practised and began to produce. Cristiano has become an incredible scorer and he and Messi are arguably the best two players the game has seen.

“But despite my friendship with Cristiano, I’d go for Messi. It’s for the same reason I loved watching Xavi and [Paul] Scholes: it’s the different things in Messi’s game.

  • I can still play in the Premier League – Rooney

Former England captain, Wayne Rooney, drops hint that he has no doubts he could still return to the English Premier League.

The Manchester United and England’s record goalscorer, Rooney, quit the Premier League last June after agreeing to join Major League Soccer side DC United.
Rooney, 33, scored 12 goals as he dragged the club off the bottom of the Eastern Conference and into the playoffs with a number of impressive displays.
And while he’s clearly enjoying himself in the US, Rooney still believes he’s still good enough and hungry enough to play in the Premier League.
“If I’m being honest, I know quality wise, I can still play in the Premier League,” Rooney told CNN Sport.
“I know that. I’ve always been a confident person, and so I have high expectations of myself.
“And yeah, I’ve come here expecting to do well. And I think there was a surprise from people who have their opinions, which is fair enough, but I never doubted myself at all.”

Ex-England captain Wayne Rooney visits White House

Former England captain and DC United midfielder Wayne Rooney has visited the White House, the home of US President Donald Trump, for a Christmas party.

The 33-year-old was pictured with Trump’s 12-year-old son Barron, who is a football fan and has played for DC’s youth team.

Manchester United’s record scorer Rooney moved to the US capital to join DC from Everton in June.

He scored 12 goals as they reached the MLS play-offs in November.

It was reported that Rooney was accompanied by wife Coleen and his four sons and they were given a guided tour.

  • Rooney to captain England during farewell appearance

England’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney will captain the side and wear the number 10 shirt when he comes on to make his farewell appearance, BBC reports.

Rooney, 33, retired from international football in 2017 but will win his 120th and final cap in a friendly against the United States at Wembley on Thursday.

Fabian Delph will start the match as captain but will hand the armband to Rooney when the DC United striker comes on as a substitute in the second half.

Rooney will also get a guard of honour.

The former Manchester United and Everton forward initially ended his international career with 119 caps and a record 53 goals.

But the Football Association sees Thursday’s match as an opportunity to “honour” his “record-breaking international career”.

Rooney will leave the squad before they face Croatia in the Nations League at Wembley on Sunday.

  • Players should respect Rooney on England return – Southgate

England manager Gareth Southgate has said players should respect Wayne Rooney on his international return because they need to know “the history of the shirt”.

Rooney, 33, will earn his 120th and final England cap in the friendly against USA on 15 November.

The game, now called ‘The Wayne Rooney Foundation International’, will honour the striker and his charity.

“I think the team totally respect what he did,” Southgate said.

“I think it is important they respect what the players did in the past.”

England’s all-time record goalscorer Rooney will come on as a second-half substitute at Wembley but will not captain the side or wear the number 10 shirt.

The former England captain, who now plays in the United States for DC United, has scored 53 goals in 119 international appearances and last played for England against Scotland in November 2016.

“We talk to them a lot about that they have the shirt now but it is not their shirt, great players have worn it before them and great players will wear it after them,” Southgate added.

“That lineage and heritage of the shirt and the team is important to me because I think whether you join a club or (play for) your country you need to know the history of that shirt and the importance of it – then you are not playing for the name on the back but for the crest on the front.”

  • Man Utd can challenge City rivals for title – Rooney

Man Utd can challenge City rivals for title – Rooney

Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney is confident Jose Mourinho’s side can make a stronger push for the title next season, despite finishing 19 points behind champions Manchester City in 2017-18.

Rooney, Manchester United’s record goalscorer with 253 goals between 2004 and 2017.

“Obviously they can challenge, it’s a massive club. Last year was different because of how well Manchester City did,” he said.

“In any other year, they might have won the title. A lot of people looked at what Manchester City did and said Manchester United didn’t play that well.

“But they actually had a good season. Obviously they didn’t win anything but I think they can take confidence from that and I believe they can push Manchester City next season.

“I saw that people said they weren’t playing the most attractive football. But they scored a lot of goals. I think they are getting there. Hopefully it won’t be long before they win the title again.”

Wayne Rooney left Everton for DC United because he did not want to “hang around and be a dead weight”.

The former England captain, 32, said he would not have moved to the United States if his wife and children were not going to join him.

Rooney, who signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, said he remained hungry for success and wanted to win trophies.

He left Everton in June after scoring 208 goals in 491 Premier League appearances over 16 years.

  • Wayne Rooney set to leave Everton

Wayne Rooney looks set to play his last game in the Premier League this Sunday – with a £12m move to MLS side DC United agreed in principle.

A number of MLS franchises held talks with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford more than a year ago before England’s top goalscorer returned to Goodison Park.

Sky Sports News understands this latest deal was drafted over the past seven weeks, during several visits to the States by Stretford alongside DC United’s Chief Executive Jason Levein.

The agreement, which runs to the end of the MLS season in 2020, is yet to be signed, but SSN understands it would take a significant change of heart by Rooney and his family to stop the transfer going ahead.

Levein, who is also the co-owner of Swansea City, hopes Rooney can become the club’s marquee signing ahead of a move on July 14, to their brand new Audi Field stadium, in the heart of the capital.

Moving stadia has meant that all but two of DC United’s matches this campaign have been played away from home and they remain bottom of the MLS table with just one win from seven games.

Rooney’s salary would make him the highest-paid player in the DC organisation. The club has one of the smallest payrolls in the MLS but, with the revenue from a new stadium expected to increase, the club is looking to invest in talent.

DC United are due to play their next seven games away from home before they welcome Vancouver to Audi Field on July 15. After that, 14 of their next 19 games will be at their new home.

Rooney’s proposed move is likely to be confirmed on July 10, when the MLS ‘secondary’ (or mid-season) transfer window opens.

Before then, Rooney looks set to take his Premier League curtain-call on Sunday at West Ham’s London Stadium.

  • I wanted the ‘pressure’, reason for everton return – Rooney

I wanted the ‘pressure’, reason for everton return – Rooney

Wayne Rooney chose to return to Everton rather than move to a country such as China because he wanted the “pressure” of being back at his boyhood club.

The former Manchester United striker rejoined the Toffees on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee last summer.

The 32-year-old says he had options to move abroad on a big-money contract.

“That’s not me, I need those goals, I need that pressure. That desire to play would have been lost if I’d chosen that other option,” he told Football Focus.

Speaking to former Everton team-mate Kevin Kilbane, Rooney said he could have decided to see out his career “earning a lot of money”.

But he chose to return to Goodison Park 13 years after leaving the Merseyside club.

“I knew that coming back to Everton was more pressure – that’s what I wanted. I wanted to prove myself again to the Everton fans and to try to help this club move forward and win silverware.

“I think it was the perfect fit for me and hopefully in the next two or three years we can do that.”

Rooney played 559 times for United, scoring 253 goals.

He won five Premier League titles and the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup once each after joining from Everton for £27m in 2004.

  • FA Cup: Rooney, Martial, Rashford on target as Man United thrash Reading 4-0

Wayne Rooney became Manchester United’s joint all-time leading scorer as the holders cruised into the FA Cup fourth round with victory over Reading.

Rooney scored his 249th United goal inside 10 minutes to match the 44-year-old record of Sir Bobby Charlton, who was there to witness the moment.

Anthony Martial added the second as United bossed the first half.

Marcus Rashford added the third before doubling his tally after a horrible error by Reading keeper Ali Al Habsi. It is an unhappy return to Old Trafford for Reading boss and ex-United defender Jaap Stam.
