[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: The power to create wealth

    Read: 1 Kings 10:14-29

    Meditation verse:

“And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power  to get wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18).

There is something of value that God has deposited inside you that you can use  to create value for others such that they give you their riches in return. This is  your power to get wealth. Your power to get wealth can come from a musical  ability, a sporting inclination, ability to teach, great wisdom, leadership or  organizational skills, or business acumen. In order words, it could be a talent,  natural ability, skill, or a spiritual gift.

What is it that you naturally do well? For what do you always receive  commendations from others? Pay close attention, as your answers may unlock  your power to get wealth. Get this power working for you by creating value for  others. As you do this consistently, your wealth will increase. A man’s gift makes  room for him and brings him before great men” (Proverbs 18:16). God gives  different talents and gifts to people as He pleases (Mathew 25:15). Your gift could be spiritual such as the gift of healing or Prophecy, it could be physical  such as a creative or musical ability or a sporting inclination. It could also be

mental, such as an intellectual ability or great leadership skills. My last child is  blessed with a beautiful artistic gift. Some gifts are obvious whilst others may  need to be unwrapped. For instance, an individual may have an outstanding  ability to sing or dance which can easily be detected whilst another may have a  flair for service or an attention to detail but is completely unaware of it.

Recognizing your unique gift and operating in it with excellence will propel you  to a life of significance and success. But you must first use it to serve others.  “…Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant”  (Mathew 20:26). We are also enjoined to let our light shine before men so that  they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven (Matt 5:16). When  you bless others with your gifts, you shine as a light and because people are  always attracted to light, they will always be attracted to you. Operating in your  area of gifting with excellence demands that you are diligent. When you are  diligent, you will stand before kings (Proverbs 22:29). You will also reap a  plenteous harvest (Proverbs 21:5).

  • “Health is wealth” – By Francis Ewherido

“Health is wealth” – By Francis Ewherido

There is nobody reading this article who has not heard this short sentence, “health is wealth,” before, but what does it mean? Everybody might know the literal meaning, but very few people know the connotative meaning.

When you wake up in the morning, after a good night sleep, empty your bowels and bladder effortlessly, do some exercises, get dressed, and head off to work; it all looks so smooth and natural.

Contrast that with these scenarios: When you get tired and go to bed, sleep eludes you. The implication is a sleepless night (insomnia) or you take medication to enable you get what you should get naturally: sleep.

Also, you are pressed at night, you get up to empty your bladder, the bladder is full, but you cannot pass urine. You roll in bed in pains with a full bladder. After a while, urine begins to come out in “bits and pieces.”

Sometimes your pants, boxers or pyjamas get soaked by involuntary discharge of urine. You are probably suffering from enlarged prostate or related infections. Sometimes it looks like a simple matter, but if it is not intentionally and deliberately tackled, it can cost the sufferer a fortune and even his life.

One of the functions of the kidneys is waste removal from the body. But the kidneys of some people are not functioning optimally. They resort to dialysis regularly to temporarily perform this function. Dialysis costs money and there are really no options. The patient does it regularly or dies gradually. Kidney transplant is the “permanent” solution, but it costs a fortune.

Moreover, it is not full proof. The best solution is to run away from anything that compromises your kidney functions. Not all the solutions are within our control, but most are. In 2012, I went to India for medical reasons. I had to because even with the costs of treatment, tickets for two, accommodation and upkeep, it was still N200,000 (as at 2012) cheaper than the bill they gave me in Nigeria. I used the opportunity to do general check-up. When reviewing the results, the doctor said, “I don’t want to scare you, but watch your kidneys.”

Since then, I have been deliberate in watching my kidneys. I cannot use ignorance or a foolish lifestyle to compromise my kidneys.

I had a neighbour for about 10 years. I only met her twice and that was when I went to her house. She managed to come downstairs. Arthritis had confined her to the upper floor of their one storey building. The children did all the running around. After all the children left home, the husband did the running around, while an emergency kitchen was created upstairs to enable her cook without coming downstairs to the kitchen she had used before arthritis took over.

There are many more instances where health challenges have completely altered people’s lives. There are those who rely on treatment or taking drugs regularly to stay alive. They take the treatment daily or periodically as prescribed. The cost might be cheap or expensive.

There are those who spend hundreds of thousands or more monthly just to function normally. There are also those who spend huge sums of money just to be alive, but they cannot function normally. Living and earning an income gets disrupted by health challenges. Some people spend their financial reserves on medicals and drugs to just stay alive. With time, they dispose of assets they had accumulated. Another name for this situation is burning a candle on both sides: spending without earning income. How long can the candle last?

Finally, we have those in the above conditions but are in addition suffering from debilitating conditions. We have critical stages of diabetes, cancer that has spread, kidneys that have failed, etc. Unless a miracle happens, it looks like the people are only living on borrowed time. They hang on to hope and become broke or accumulate debts after spending all they have on treatment. At the end some still die. These people and their families and devoted friends are the ones who really understand the connotative meaning of the sentence, “health is wealth.”

If you do not fall into these categories, thank God for getting into 2024 in health of body and mind, but you cannot rest on your oars. Remember Apostle Paul’s admonition: “those who think they stand firm should be careful to avoid falling” (1Corinthians 10:12). Happy New Year once more.

I advice every adult, especially those over 40, to declare 2024 a year of “health is wealth.” The implication is to take your health very seriously. In the last week of 2023, we were hit by news of the death of the former governor of Ondo State, Chief Rotimi Akerodolu, SAN and Ghali Na’Abba, former speak of the House of Representatives. Akeredolu died of cancer. The cause of death of Na’Abba was not disclosed, but we know prolonged illnesses that cause death in Nigeria: cancer, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, failure of key organs like the heart, liver, kidneys, etc. These illnesses can be managed if detected early, so everybody should look after his/her health.

We must be careful what we consume, but we must also know what works for us. Our granny on my maternal side, Amerhevu Ofeheri lived up to 101. Until her death, she continued to eat starch, banga soup, owho soup and raw palm oil. All these are palm oil-related meals. Yet some young people are running away from the same foods? How did Granny Amerhevu live up to over 100 years eating these foods till the last minute? We need to investigate the impact of these foods before we jump to conclusion.

Anyway, till date do not mess around with Urhobo, Isoko, Itsekiri and Ijaw people where banga, owho and starch are concerned. They will not take it easy with you. A ceremony devoid of Owho soup and starch is incomplete. I eat what agrees with my body constitution. I am taking more interest in condiments/spices like irienre, eyirhe, eb’itien and lemon grass. We use them in the Niger Delta to prepare pepper soup. I strongly believe they have medicinal values. I am still researching, but I enjoy them in my unripe plantain pepper soup as often as my wife obliges me.

Prostate enlargement has been one of my areas of interest. It affects more than 50 per cent of black men from age 40, particularly 50 years and above. I had previously committed some resources to it. The expedition continues. Once I find a reliable remedy, I will blow it here for interested men to follow up independently. I spoke about tomatoes remedy some time ago. It is still potent, but from my investigation, it is better taking it to manage the prostate, not to cure the enlarged prostate. Prostate cancer is a major killer of men, so we must kill it before it kills us.

Many people died in 2023. Some of these deaths could have been avoided if detected early. I want to spend some time discussing these health issues on this column to help us avert avoidable deaths. We shall continue next week.

God has blessed my family, we don’t need the wealth of Nigeria to survive – Remi Tinubu

The wife of the President-elect, Oluremi Tinubu, has said that her family doesn’t need the wealth of Nigeria to survive.

Mrs Tinubu made this statement on Sunday during her remark at the presidential inauguration interdenominational church service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.

According to her, the country’s path would be restored with the help of God and Nigerians.

“God has blessed my family, we don’t need the wealth of Nigeria to survive but to do the right thing. And I promise you on this altar that with your help, with the help of God, we will set this nation on the right path.

“We need your prayers. I can tell you, I for one, am a silent maker. I am not the noise maker but I listen and I hear.”

As he dispensed value to them, they brought him riches and his wealth increased greatly. When the queen of Sheba visited him, she was so impressed by his wisdom that she gave him one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great quantity and precious stones. Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah was filled with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze (Ex 31:2-4).

  • The root of all evil – Femi Aribisala

    By Femi Aribisala

Is it good to go to school; get a good job; build your own house and have lots of money? Not according to Jesus. These things are highly valued by men. But Jesus teaches that: “What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight.” (Luke 16:15).

Therefore, it is not surprising that Jesus had none of these accomplishments as a man. He did not go to school. He was a lowly carpenter. He did not build His own house. He was not a rich man.

In Jesus’ doctrine, the cares of this life are the preoccupations of Satan and men. This makes them offensive to God. Jesus told Peter: “Get behind me, Satan! You are an offense to me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” (Matthew 16:23).

This means the things of men are the things of Satan. Jesus asked the chief priests of the Jews: “The baptism of John- where was it from? From heaven or from men?” (Matthew 21:25). If it is from heaven, then it cannot be from men.

    God is good

Jesus says: “No one is good but One, that is, God.” (Matthew 19:17). This means only the things about the kingdom of God can be good. Everything about this world is evil. Those things that preoccupy us; going to school, getting good jobs, building houses, and making money, all pertain to this world and, as such, are evil and not of God.

God’s kingdom is not of this world. (John 18:36). Indeed, everything earthly is a human alternative to the will of God in heaven. Continued devotion to the things of this world militates against our desire to be with the Father in heaven and is therefore evil.

Jesus says to His disciples: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13).

This indicates He sees men as evil. To be good, men, who Jesus also categorises as “the sons of this world,” have to become “the sons of light;” another word for sons of God. Sons of men must receive from Jesus the power to become sons of God. (John 1:12-13).

This requires all our affinities to men and to this world to be relinquished in favour of God and the kingdom of heaven. These include allegiances to the fatherland, to family and relatives, and race, sex, and creed.

Jesus is categorical: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26). He says furthermore: “Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33).

    Relative and absolute evil

Men are consumed by the love of life, leading us to regard anything that threatens our life as evil. This makes us define evil erroneously in relative terms. If the enemy kills us, he is evil; but if we kill him, we are good.

However, God sees evil in absolute terms.

Jesus regards as evil anything that undermines God’s will. This makes man’s life the greatest evil of all. The love of life, expressed in our determination to enhance, promote, and safeguard our temporal condition, commands our allegiance even above the first and greatest commandment to love God with all our heart.

Therefore, Jesus regards man’s love of life as the root of all evil and the basis of every sin. Indeed, we steal, cheat, fight, kill and commit adultery to save our lives. We only overcome sin by hating our lives.

    Re-definition of evil

Jesus reveals that the love of life makes men enemies of God. He tells us that God has made the hatred of life in this world the primary prerequisite for the attainment of eternal life. Jesus says: “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25).

Thereby, Jesus redefines evil. Since men esteem their lives more than anything else, Jesus defines everything that diminishes our life in this world as good. He requires us to take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions and in distresses. For when we are weak, then we are strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10).

Poverty becomes a blessing. Jesus says: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” (Luke 6:20). He also categorises adversities as a blessing: “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.” (Luke 6:21).

He says: “Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.” (Luke 6:22).

Correspondingly, Jesus tells us not to bother to resist evil anymore: “I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Matthew 5:39). He insists we must love our enemies: “I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:44).

Moreover, Jesus says we should not fear death: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.” (Luke 12:4). Death becomes something good because it leads to our reunification with the Father in heaven: “If you loved me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father.’” (John 14:28). But life is evil because it keeps us away from God.

    Evil misnomer

The problem with the love of life is that men are unaware that it is sinful. If we love life, we will automatically love sin. The love of life militates against the love of God. It blinds men to the truth about good and evil.

Indeed, we define our righteousness by the extent to which we love and promote life; the very thing God hates. To understand good and evil from God’s perspective, we must first break free from the bondage of the love of life.

The love of life prompts us to eat from the God-forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Everything we make and do has evil and good in it simultaneously. Every good medicine for healing sicknesses has bad side effects. The plane that carries us from Cape to Cairo sometimes falls from the sky and crashes.

We make so-called “evil things” like the atom bomb and the machine gun; and “good things” like the airplane and the aspirin. But both our “good” and “bad” products are evil in God’s sight because they are of the world and not of God.

Accordingly, John counsels: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes not from the Father but from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16).

  • Black nations care about wealth, not mental health – Jimmy Jean-Louis

Black nations care about wealth, not mental health – Jimmy Jean-Louis

Jimmy Jean-Louis, Haitian-French actor and model, has stated that black nations focus more on acquisition of wealth at the expense of care for one another.

The award-winning media role interpreter revealed this while speaking with BBC Pidgin on mental problems among black people

Jean-Louis said the misplacement of priority has created a situation where blacks lose themselves due to lack of proper care for one another.

“We’re losing ourselves because we don’t care enough for ourselves. We don’t care for our people, we care for things, we care for money, we care for this and that but we don’t care for people. For me, that’s probably the biggest issue. For me, the most important thing in life is us,” he said.

Stating that mental problems remain one of the biggest issues facing black nations, the ‘Heroes’ star said it is imperative for Africans to have paradigm shift in their view about life.

“When it comes to social issues I think they are all meaningful, but often in black nations, one of them that is neglected is mental problem,” he said.

“It’s easier to categorise people as crazy than trying to dig into what’s actually wrong with them. These people have gone through so much, the trauma is real.

“They need proper help but they are not going to get them because they are being judged. Just like if you are seek, you go to the doctor and you’re cured. But here, if you are sick in the head , there’s no place to go.”

Jean –Louis is among the mass of movie stars featuring in ‘Citation’, a forthcoming movie by Kunle Afolayan.
