Lai Mohammed turns comedian at wedding reception

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed got guests at a wedding reception, on Saturday in Ilorin roaring with laughter following his jocoserious remarks.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the minister was the Chairman at the reception of the wedding of Tolulope Ajibola and Kolapo Faleye, both petroleum engineers.

Tolulope is the daughter Chief Simon Ajibola, a former Senator who represented Kwara South in the National Assembly while the groom’s father is Mr. Olufemi Faleye also from Kwara.

Addressing the couple and guests, the minister said,: “I am so delighted to be invited to be the chairman of this wedding ceremony because wedding ceremony is a thing of joy.

“I pray that happiness will not cease from our homes.

Mohammed, though a staunch Muslim, quoted from the Holy Bible to the admiration of guests.

Speaking extempore, he said: “I will start my address by referring us to the Book of Isaiah chapter 4, verse 1 which says:

“The time shall come when seven women shall take hold of one man and say food, shelter we shall provide, please let us bear your name to save us this disgrace.

“So, I rejoice with Pelumi that God has given you, your own husband. I pray your union shall be fruitful and enduring.

“To the groom, I want to refer you to the Book of Deuteronomy 24:5 which says: When a man weds, he shall not be called upon to go to war or work. He shall stay in the house with the wife for one full year.

“I am going to speak with Mr. Faleye to allow you to stay for one year so that you can do your duty.

Not done with the amused guests, the minister dropped his last advice which threw the audience in the hall into uncontrollable laughter.

“I am going to end my address by giving you a valuable advice. By the Grace of God, Pelumi will be fruitful and give birth to male and female children.

“I am giving you this advice based on 38 years of experience in marriage with my wife, here, pointing to Alhaja Kudirat, sitting by his side.

“Whenever, Pelumi takes in and you want to know whether the baby will be a boy or a girl, you need not go to any hospital or do any scanning.

“Follow my example which had worked and never failed.

“When the pregnancy is eight months old, take a brand new N1000 note, put it in the navel of Pelumi. If the baby moves, it is a girl. If it does not move, it is a boy. Don’t ask me why.”

NAN reports that the minister earlier attended the marriage solemnisation at the Month Olives Anglican Church, Tanke, Ilorin.

In a sermon, the Vicar, Rotimi Omotoye said marriage is honourable and enjoyable. He enjoined the couple to build their union with the fear of God, love, trust and endurance.

Speaking to the congregation, comprising politicians, the clergy admonished those in authority to render selfless service to the people and shun unreasonable acquisition of wealth and material things.

He also charged the government of the day to do more in improving security, peaceful co-existence as well as alleviating poverty and improving the living standard of the citizens.

Reacting to the exhortation by the priest in an interview, the Information minister said President Muhammadu Buhari is on the right path.

Mohammed said: “The pastor said that government should aim at alleviating poverty, improving the lives of the citizens. If these are the yardsticks for good governance, I think we have passed.

“I can make bold to say that government that feeds 8,500,000 pupils everyday is a government that is benefitting the people.

“A government that provides infrastructure such as rail, roads, bridges, power and water is a government that is reaching out to people and touching lives.

“I came out of that service more convinced that this government is on the right path because all our programmes are meant not for a few individuals but for the public.

The minister reiterated that the administration was on the right track and everything is being done for the benefit of Nigerians as a whole and not for few Nigerians.

Official: Saudi-led strikes kill 20 at wedding party in Yemen

At least 20 people have been killed and 40 others wounded in Saudi-led airstrikes that hit a wedding party in northern Yemen, a Yemeni health official said on Monday.

The number of known casualties from Sunday’s airstrikes is likely to increase as rescue operations continue, a spokesman for the Houthi-controlled Health Ministry, Abdel-Karim al-Kahlani, told dpa.

On Sunday, Yemeni medical sources said that jets belonging to the Saudi-led coalition carried out two raids on a wedding party in the province of Hajjah.

Most of Hajjah, 123 kilometres north-west of the capital Sana’a, is under the control of the Houthi militia.

Yemen has been embroiled in a conflict between the Saudi-backed government and the Iran-backed Houthis since late 2014.

Fighting intensified in March 2015, when the Houthis advanced on the government’s temporary capital of Aden, prompting Saudi Arabia and its Sunni allies to start an air campaign against the Shiite group.

The Saudis fear that the rebels will give their regional rival, Shiite Iran, a strategic foothold in the Arabian Peninsula.

  • [Updated] Photos: Buhari, Saraki, Dogara, Ooni, others grace Dangote’s daughter’s wedding in Kano

President Muhammadu Buhari was a special guest at the wedding of Fatima Dangote, daughter of billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote, which took place in Kano on Friday.

The president attended Fatima’s wedding fatiha during a short visit to Kano and returned to Abuja shortly after.

This was disclosed by the president’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, on his Twitter account (@BashirAhmaad).

Buhari in his capacity as the bride’s father received N500, 000 dowry from the representative of the groom at the occasion.

Other important personalities that graced the occasion include Senate President, Bukola Saraki;former Head of State, retired Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Speaker, the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara and a retinue of serving Senators.

Some governors and ministers as well as traditional rulers from across the country also attended the occasion.

Others were former National Security Adviser, retired Gen. Aliyu Gusau, members of the business community, politicians and members of the diplomat corps among others.

The event which was also attended by prominent Islamic scholars and other well wishers from across the country, witnessed a large turnout of workers from various companies owned by the renowned business mogul.

Security at the occasion was water tight as all the entrances leading to the palace were cordoned-off by heavenly armed security operatives.

The development made it impossible for most journalists who turned up to cover the event to do so.

  • Dapchi girls: Jonathan didn’t attend society wedding like you did, ex-presidential aide blasts Buhari

…Says Buhari didn’t handle Dapchi abduction better than Jonathan did Chibok

A former aide of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s claims in Damaturu, Yobe, that he handled the recent abduction of 110 Dapchi schoolgirls ‘much better’ than Mr. Jonathan treated a similar incident in Chibok in 2014 is false.

Reno Omokri in a statement on Thursday rather defended his former boss saying it was Jonathan who treated the abduction with dispatch while Mr. Buhari chose to “look the other way”.

Recall President Buhari, while speaking in Damaturu where he went to sympathise with the parents of the Dapchi schoolgirls had used the occasion to take a swipe at his predecessor, who had also been criticised in the past for the abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls, although many have been reunited with their families.

Mr. Buhari in Damaturu had said: “The Federal Government’s response to the unfortunate abduction of the school girls is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way while the Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over three years.

“Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills.”

However, Mr. Omokri said it beats his “imagination why a President who is close to 80 years of age will continue to lie like a child”.

    Read Omokri’s statement below:

“When the Chibok Girls were kidnapped, the Jonathan administration did not “look the other way” as President Buhari claims and historical records prove this. The Chibok Girls were kidnapped on April 14, 2014. Exactly three days later, on April 17, 2014, then President Goodluck Jonathan called an emergency National Security Council meeting at Aso Rock Presidential Villa. Is this the act of an administration or a President that looks away?

“Now more than two weeks after the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped, has President Buhari held a National Security Council meeting to address the situation? No, he has not. As a matter of fact, to prove to Nigerians how inept he is, the President canceled the Federal Executive Council meeting that was to hold after the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped because of a conference he had to attend.

“Between a President who calls an emergency meeting after Chibok and a President who canceled an important meeting so he could attend an economic conference, who can be described as looking the other way?

“Which serious leader cancels the most important meeting in his nation at a time when Kaduna is facing ethnic and religious killings, Zamfara is facing mass killings by bandits, Benue, Plateau, Adamawa and Taraba are facing an onslaught from Fulani herdsmen and 110 girls were kidnapped in Dapchi?

“When Yusuf Buhari had an accident, President Buhari canceled all his engagements and headed straight to the hospital. When the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped, the same President Buhari carried on as usual and went to Kano to go and dance and socialise at a Society Wedding!

“After the Jonathan administration held an emergency National Security Council meeting on April 17, 2014, the Nigerian Army and Air force began searching for the Chibok girls with sorties being flown in search of the girls.

“Let me remind Nigerians that one of the people who undermined the then administration’s anti-terror war was Muhammadu Buhari who on June 3, 2013 said the “military offensive against Boko Haram is anti-North”. I urge Nigerians to Google this direct quote to know their President better.

“And again, the President lied when he said his administration “rescued” 100 Chibok Girls. The Chibok Girls were not rescued. As a matter of fact, they were released by Boko Haram after the alleged payment of huge ransoms and freedom of captured Boko Haram commanders by the Buhari administration.

“Only two weeks ago, Shuaibu Moni, one of the Boko Haram commanders released by the Buhari administration went back to Sambisa Forest and released a video threatening Nigeria.

“Who knows whether it was moneys allegedly paid as ransom to Boko Haram or individuals freed by the government that were used to facilitate the kidnap of the Dapchi Girls and the recent killings of United Nations staff in Rann.

“Again, three weeks ago, Chief Mike Okiro, the head of the Police Service Commission, revealed that under President Muhammadu Buhari, 150,000 police men are guarding ‘big men’ instead of performing core police duties.

“President Buhari’s son, Yusuf, alone had more guards guarding him than the guards attached to Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi at the time of the kidnapping, yet the President has the guts to say he handled Daochi better than Jonathan handled Chibok. A serious President, knowing how vulnerable the Northeast is would have sent these 150,000 policemen to guard schools in the Northeast rather than send them out to guard APC big shots all over the country.

“Finally, can President Buhari, who claims to have defeated Boko Haram, tell the world how many people are killed Daily by Boko Haram under his regime as compared to the previous regime?

“In the first ten weeks of 2018, Boko Haram killed 519 people in the Northeast. Only a patently dishonest leader can claim to have defeated Boko Haram with such numbers.”

Buhari’s tour is already receiving more knocks than commendations.

In Makurdi, the president was derided by many when he said he was unaware, three months after, that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, failed to obey his directive to relocate to Benue to contain the perennial conflicts between herdsmen and farmers.

While many have called for the sack of Mr. Idris, the controversial cop was reportedly summoned by the president to give an update in the raging crisis in Benue state while presidential sources say the president would act on the matter “when he has all the details”.

  • Buhari, others storm Kano for Ganduje, Ajimobi’s children’s wedding today

The ancient city of Kano was yesterday agog ahead of today’s wedding between the daughter of the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Fatima and the son of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Idris.

President Muhammadu Buhari, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors and other top dignitaries are expected to witness the grand ceremony today.

Others who are expected to grace the occasion include Senate President, Bukola Ssaraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Dogora, other principal officers and members of the National Assembly.

Also a number of ministers, diplomatic corps, technocrats, captains of industries and top aides of President Buhari are also expected to witness the marriage ceremony, described by many as the marriage of the year.

On Friday, wife of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Oludolapo, arrived with over 15 First Ladies of various states in preparation for the D-Day.

Over 20 governors are also expected to be in Kano for the marriage ceremony.

The wedding Fatiha will hold in Kano Central Mosque, beside the Palace of the Emir of Kano, His Highness, Malam Muhammad Sanusi 11.

As at the time of filling in this report, Kano State Government House has already wore celebration mood with different colours depicting Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba tradition.

Security agencies are already on ground to provide adequate security for the event.

Speaking on security arrangement, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rabiu Yusuf said all necessary arrangements had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free marriage ceremony.

As you can see, we are all busy. Dignitaries have already started arriving at the airport. We have deployed our men to strategic positions. Everywhere is calm and there is no cause for alarm.

Recall that over eleven governors had earlier on November 10, 2017 visited the state to witness the marriage introduction of the couple.
