EFL: West Ham, Leeds, Sunderland crash out

Jorgen Strand Larsen scored twice in two minutes as Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated West Ham United 3-2 to reach the English Football League (EFL) Cup third round.

Strand Larsen came on in the 73rd minute and struck in the 82nd and 84th minutes to seal victory at Molineux, overturning West Ham’s earlier 2-1 lead.

Lucas Paqueta had headed the visitors in front on 63 minutes, after Rodrigo Gomes had netted Wolves’ first goal of the season just before halftime.

Tomas Soucek equalised for West Ham in the 50th minute, following Hwang Hee-chan’s missed penalty for Wolves that hit the post earlier in the match.

The clash between the league’s bottom two teams added more pressure on West Ham boss Graham Potter, whose side have suffered heavy league defeats to Chelsea and Sunderland.

Promoted Leeds United were knocked out on penalties by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday after a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough, losing the shootout 3-0.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans boycotted the match in protest at the club’s Thai ownership, and they watched from afar as their side advanced in dramatic fashion.

U.S. goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was the hero for Wednesday, saving two penalties and keeping a clean sheet in the shootout on his debut after joining the club on loan.

“I’ve only been here a few days and had to learn 10 new names.

“Then another 10 in this game. I’m glad I could help,” Horvath said at post-match.

Sunderland also crashed out on penalties, losing 6-5 to third-tier Huddersfield Town, after a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Brentford beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the only other all-Premier League tie of the night, with goals from Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago securing victory on the South Coast.

Brentford’s record signing Dango Ouattara featured as a substitute against former club Bournemouth, days after scoring on his league debut.

At Turf Moor, Burnley edged Championship side Derby County 2-1, with Oliver Sonne grabbing a stoppage-time winner for the much-changed Premier League outfit.

Wrexham earned a dramatic 3-2 win at Preston North End, with Kieffer Moore scoring in stoppage time after the hosts twice took the lead in the second-tier encounter.

League Two side Cambridge United, stunned Championship club Charlton Athletic.

The third round draw will take place after Wednesday’s matches.

Wan-Bissaka gets first DR Congo call-up

West Ham United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka has received his first call-up to the DR Congo senior national team.

The defender is included in the African nation’s 26-man squad for next month’s international friendlies against Mali and Madagascar.

Born in Croydon, Wan-Bissaka had featured for England at youth levels as well as the DR Congo U20 side in 2015.

The former Crystal Palace star received his first England call-up under Gareth Southgate in September 2019, however, withdrew from the squad due to a back injury and never made a senior appearance for the Three Lions.

DR Congo, whose last World Cup appearance was in 1974 currently top Group B of the African qualifiers, one point ahead of Senegal after six matches.

EPL: West Ham win dents Arsenal title hopes

Arsenal missed the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool as West Ham ended a four-match winless run with a stunning victory at Emirates Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen got the winner against a Gunners side who later had Myles Lewis-Skelly sent off.

Victory would have moved Arsenal to within five points of Arne Slot’s team, who visit champions Manchester City on Sunday, but they struggled badly against a Hammers side who defended magnificently and created the better openings over the 90 minutes.

Bowen started and finished the move that led to the winner late in the first half, collecting a loose ball on the edge of his own box and feeding Aaron Wan-Bissaka before stooping low to nod the full-back’s cross into the net for his 50th Premier League goal.

It was the first time Arsenal had trailed in a home Premier league game at half-time this season, but they showed no discernible improvement after the interval – despite pinning West Ham back for much of the second period.

Leandro Trossard had a low shot saved by the feet of Alphonse Areola, but the Gunners’ hopes of a route back into the contest were dealt a major blow when Lewis-Skelly was sent off for a professional foul on Mohammed Kudus near the halfway line.

Referee Craig Pawson initially cautioned the 18-year-old for dragging Kudus to the floor, but the video assistant referee (VAR) ruled that Lewis-Skelly had denied the Ghanaian a clear goalscoring opportunity and the yellow card was upgraded to a red.

West Ham held on comfortably in the end to move 13 points clear of the bottom three and level with Manchester United in 15th – although they stay 16th because of their inferior goal difference.

  • What I learned from Chelsea axing – Potter

What I learned from Chelsea axing – Potter

West Ham boss Graham Potter has again revisited his sacking at Chelsea.

Potter was axed by Chelsea in April 2023 before returning to football this season with the Irons.

“At the time you can imagine I wasn’t in a good place because you are disappointed to lose your job and it hasn’t gone very well, or clearly as well as you’d like,” Potter told Football Focus.

    “It was a tough moment.”

On how he looks back at his dismissal, Potter said: “I think it makes you better, it makes you a stronger person, it makes you a better coach.

“The worst that can happen is you can lose your job and you can still be alright, you can still move forward, still have something to offer, still grow as a person.

“That bubble we’re in, it can be a little too far down the rabbit hole. Be grateful for the good and the bad, just deal with it.”

He also said of his time away from the game, “It was nice to get out of the bubble – 12 years, you can end up lacking a bit of perspective.

“To zoom out and see the world and football for what it is, and hopefully it makes you a better person and better manager.”

  • EPL: West Ham to bid for Nigerian striker

EPL: West Ham to bid for Nigerian striker

Premier League club, West Ham United are hopeful of bringing in another marksman to their team this winter.

The Hammers want to add a new striker to their squad as they give manager Graham Potter a more balanced group to work with.

Per The Sun, West Ham are plotting an ambitious deal for Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

While Awoniyi is no longer first choice at Forest, they are vying for a top four finish this season.

Whether their boss Nuno Espírito Santo wants to lose the Nigerian is not clear at present.

While a loan is off the table, a permanent deal has been discussed this week.

  • Liverpool hammer West Ham to go eight points clear

Liverpool hammer West Ham to go eight points clear

Liverpool thrashed West Ham United 5-0 at the London Stadium to stretch their Premier League lead to eight points on Sunday with Mohamed Salah once again in irrepressible form.

The Egyptian has been enjoying a vintage season despite uncertainty over a new contract and scored once and provided two assists as Liverpool dismantled the hammers at their London home.

He now has 20 goals in all competitions this season and appears to be firing Liverpool towards a 20th league title in Dutchman Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

Liverpool have 45 points from 18 games with surprise package Nottingham Forest their closest pursuers with 37 points having played a game more.

Fourth-placed Chelsea could cut the gap to seven on Sunday when they take on struggling Ipswich Town.

Surprisingly, Liverpool were unable to make their superiority count over in the opening stage.

But once Luis Diaz swept a shot past home keeper Alphonse Areola after the ball rebounded kindly into his path after 30 minutes there was no stopping Slot’s men.

West Ham might point to a Mohammed Kudus shot that rattled the post when it was 1-0 but they were never really in it.

Salah showed great footwork to tee up Cody Gakpo to make it 2-0 in the 40th minute and was then played in by Curtis Jones to effectively end the contest just before the interval.

Liverpool throttled back after the break but still carved out several chances and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shot deflected off the head of Max Kilman to make it 4-0 in the 54th minute.

Slot made a raft of substitutions in the second half but Salah stayed on to torment West Ham and produced a mazy dribble before releasing Jota to curl in the fifth in the 84th minute.

Some of the few West Ham fans who remained at the end booed at the final whistle but Liverpool, as they have been since the start of the season, were simply too good.

  • West Ham v Man Utd: It wasn’t a penalty – Matchwinner, Bowen

West Ham v Man Utd: It wasn’t a penalty – Matchwinner, Bowen

West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen has suggested that his team were lucky to get a penalty against Manchester United.

Bowen tucked away a late penalty that was continuously awarded by VAR after the referee decided against giving one.

Many pundits and commentators felt that it was not a “clear and obvious error” that merited a VAR review, but the referee did go to the monitor and award a penalty for Matthijs De Ligt’s foul on Danny Ings.

Bowen told Premier League Productions: “At the time I saw (Danny) Ings got kicked and I think they got kicked so I thought it wasn’t a pen.

“I had a feeling it might get given and then Cre (Somerville) had the ball and it was a waiting game.

“With penalties you have a routine you know where you’re going. But when you’re waiting you’re thinking shall I go the other way?

“But I stuck with what I know and stepped up and wanted to dispatch and thankfully I did that.”

Late Bowen penalty gives West Ham win against Man Utd

Jarrod Bowen scored an injury-time penalty to condemn Manchester United to a 2-1 defeat in the Premier League and ease pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui.

Casemiro thought he grabbed a point for the visitors when he headed home with less than 10 minutes left to cancel out Crysencio Summerville’s 74th-minute opener.

But Manchester United were furious as referee David Coote was sent to the pitchside monitor by the Video Assistant Referee with three minutes remaining to review Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings in the box.

Despite protests from Manchester United’s players over a handball by Ings, Coote pointed to the spot and Bowen calmly converted, slotting past Andre Onana.

  • Jackson scores brace as Chelsea thrash West Ham

Jackson scores brace as Chelsea thrash West Ham

Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Chelsea condemned lacklustre West Ham to a third consecutive home defeat in the Premier League.

Chelsea took a fourth-minute lead after West Ham’s players switched off at a free-kick which allowed Jadon Sancho to send Jackson clear on the left.

Jackson left Edson Alvarez trailing in his wake then cut inside on to his right foot and threaded a low shot through the legs of Alphonse Areola.

The Hammers’ lack of intensity was in evidence again 14 minutes later as Moises Caicedo was afforded time to slip the jet-heeled Jackson in again.

This time Jackson left behind Max Kilman and produced a deft finish with the outside of the boot, with Areola caught in no-man’s land.

Chelsea effectively wrapped up the points two minutes after half-time as Jackson turned provider.

A swift counterattack culminated in the Senegal striker outfoxing the retreating West Ham defence with a clever reverse pass, and Cole Palmer fired emphatically beyond Areola.

West Ham had earlier felt aggrieved when a strong penalty appeal – checked by VAR – was turned down after Crysencio Summerville went to ground following a tussle with Wesley Fofana.

Mohammed Kudus, West Ham’s most likely source of a goal, had the ball in the net before half-time but was flagged for offside while Jarrod Bowen forced Robert Sanchez to save well at his near post after the break.

Chelsea’s victory puts them within two points of Premier League leaders Manchester City, while West Ham are left languishing in the bottom half, three points above the relegation zone.

  • Haaland scores back-to-back hat-trick in West Ham win

Haaland scores back-to-back hat-trick in West Ham win

Erling Haaland continued his superb start to the season by hitting back-to-back hat-tricks as defending champions Manchester City beat West Ham United at London Stadium.

The Norway striker struck twice in the first half and added a third late on to take his tally to seven goals in three games and maintain City’s 100% start to the campaign.

Haaland slid in a 10th-minute opener after receiving a pass from Bernardo Silva, but West Ham drew level when Ruben Dias turned Jarrod Bowen’s cross into his own net.

Haaland restored City’s lead midway through the first half, driving a fierce strike into the roof of the net.

The Hammers had struggled to get a foothold in the game but hit the woodwork early in the second half through Mohammed Kudus following a quick break.

That chance sparked them into life and for a significant period they had their opponents on the back foot.

But they did not threaten Ederson enough and Haaland – quiet for much of the second half – beat the offside trap late on to get his and City’s third.

The win means Pep Guardiola’s side are already top of the table in the early stages of this season while West Ham are 13th with three points from three games.
