  • Liverpool come from behind to beat West Ham

Liverpool come from behind to beat West Ham

Liverpool survived a rare night of struggle in this stellar season to overcome West Ham United and close to within four wins of the Premier League title as keeper Lukasz Fabianski suffered an Anfield nightmare.

Victory means Liverpool equal the English league record of 18 successive wins, set by Manchester City from August to December 2017, with Jurgen Klopp’s side last dropping points in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in October.

The Hammers – whose fans staged protests against the club’s owners throughout – threatened to inflict Liverpool’s first league defeat this term when they led midway through the second half.

Liverpool took an early lead when Fabianski failed to deal with a routine Georginio Wijnaldum header but David Moyes’ side showed great character to hit back through Issa Diop’s header, which should also have been kept out by Alisson.

And when substitute Pablo Fornals swept West Ham into the lead nine minutes after the break Liverpool were faced with a fight to preserve their unbeaten 27-match league run.

It had been a poor display by their sky-high standards but their luck was in as Fabianski was the culprit again, inexplicably allowing Mohamed Salah’s shot to squirm through his legs in the 68th minute.

There was a sense of inevitability as Liverpool went for victory and so it proved as Sadio Mane turned in with nine minutes left after Trent Alexander-Arnold lofted the ball over Fabianski.

It was cruel on West Ham and Moyes, with Liverpool keeper Alisson having to produce a crucial late block from substitute Jarrod Bowen.

Liverpool have restored their 22-point lead at the top and the Hammers are left in the bottom three.

  • Liverpool go 19 points clear after beating West Ham

Liverpool go 19 points clear after beating West Ham

Liverpool moved an incredible 19 points clear at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured a 2-0 win at West Ham on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have turned the title race into a procession and the runaway leaders saw off struggling West Ham to make it a remarkable 23 victories from 24 league games this season.

Salah opened the scoring with a first half penalty at the London Stadium and Oxlade-Chamberlain wrapped up Liverpool’s 15th successive league win after the interval.

Second placed Manchester City are now so far behind Liverpool that the question is not if but when the Reds clinch their first English league title since 1990.

The Reds have won 31 of their past 32 league fixtures, only dropping points in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in October.

With 14 games left, Liverpool’s incredible run has given historic overtones to their impending title coronation.

The European and World champions are now 41 games unbeaten in the league — just eight away from the 49-match English top-flight record set by Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ across 2003 and 2004.

Matching that Arsenal team’s achievement in going an entire league season without defeat is within Liverpool’s reach, as is Manchester City’s Premier League record of 100 points.

Liverpool’s latest success on a chilly night in east London will be just a footnote when the full story of their likely title triumph is written, but they still managed to record another small piece of history.

They have now beaten all 19 of the other teams in the league at least once this season — the first time the club have achieved that feat in the top-flight.

Klopp attracted criticism for announcing he and his first-team players won’t be present for the FA Cup fourth round replay against Shrewsbury next week as it falls within the Premier League’s winter break.

Instead, Klopp will send Liverpool’s youth team to the match, but at this rate they will win the title so early that his stars will have plenty of time to put their feet up in the final weeks of the domestic season.

  • Why West Ham will be difficult for Leicester City – Iheanacho

Kelechi Iheanacho has predicted a ‘difficult’ encounter for Leicester City when they take on West Ham United on Wednesday.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have suffered back-to-back losses in their previous two fixtures, with their last league victory coming against Newcastle United on New Year’s Day.

West Ham, on their part, are also struggling to secure maximum points in the Premier League with their last win dating back to January 1 against Bournemouth, and they have picked up just a point in their last two matches.

Despite their recent poor run of results, Iheanacho thinks Wednesday’s game would be tough following David Moyes’ return to the London Stadium.

In the Premier League when there’s a change of manager you will see they are different from the previous one,” the Nigeria forward told LCFC TV.

“It’s always going to be difficult with a team that changed their manager, always going to be a difficult one.

“And in the Premier League this season every game is hard. It’s going to be a tough one because they’ve become stronger, they are just like a proper team now.

EPL: Sheff Utd move fifth as VAR denies West Ham

Sheffield United climbed to fifth in the Premier League table on Friday with a win against West Ham, who had an injury-time equaliser ruled out by Video Assistant Referee.

John Fleck took advantage of a big mistake by substitute goalkeeper David Martin, latching on to his wayward pass to tee up Oli McBurnie to finish from close range after 53 minutes.

Substitute Robert Snodgrass thought he had levelled for the visitors, but the goal was disallowed after the ball was judged to have hit Declan Rice’s arm in the build-up.

“VAR, VAR”, the home fans chanted as the final whistle sounded, with West Ham condemned to their eighth defeat in 11 Premier League games and their first under new manager David Moyes.

The result means the Hammers remain two points above the relegation zone and could drop into the bottom three if results go against them this weekend.

  • Fellaini set for Premier League return

Fellaini set for Premier League return

West Ham are interested in signing Marouane Fellaini, Sky Sports reports.

Hammers boss, David Moyes, is looking to team up with Fellaini at a third different club.

The Belgium midfielder was allowed to leave Manchester United after five-and-half years in January, to join Chinese club Shandong Luneng.

Fellaini has two years left on his contract in China. However, the Chinese FA are introducing a salary cap, which means the 32-year-old would have to take a 75% pay cut if he stayed beyond the end of his current deal.

Moyes has previously coached Fellaini twice, taking him from Everton to Manchester United on Deadline Day 2013 for £27.5m.

Fellaini has made 260 Premier League appearances during spells at Everton and United, scoring 27 goals.

West Ham has confirmed the resigning of David Moyes as manager of the club.

“We are pleased to confirm that David Moyes has returned to the Club as first-team manager,” the club aid on its tweeter handle.

Moyes signed an 18-month deal and begins work immediately ahead of the New Year’s Day fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium, the club said on its website.

West Ham had on Saturday sacked Manuel Pellegrini after a 2-1 home defeat by Leicester City.

Joint-Chairman David Sullivan said: “David proved in his short time with the Club that he was capable of getting results and we believe that he will start moving the Club in the right direction once again.

“We are delighted to welcome David back – he knows the Club well and he built strong relationships during that time which will be crucial for the work that needs to be done going forward.”

“It’s fabulous to be back,” said Moyes. “It feels great to be home. I’ve missed being here because I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed being around the stadium and I loved being in this part of the world and I missed the Club, so I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m feeling very proud that I’m back here at West Ham. But I think more importantly I’ll be looking to see what I can do and what I can make improvements to, how we can get some wins with the players and how we can get some quick wins on the field as well.

“I do believe that the squad of players I’ve got here is a better squad of players than when I took over before, so I am looking forward to working with them.”

“I think there’s got to be a short-term goal for us just now to get the wins to get us away from the wrong end of the league and what we’re going to do over the next six months, then what we’re going to do over the next period as well. The start is really focusing on the immediate games.”

The Scot rejoins the Club he guided to a strong finish during an initial seven-month spell in charge during the 2017/18 season.

Moyes has managed in the Premier League for 15 seasons, including a successful spell at Everton which earned him a move to Manchester United.

  • West Ham sack Manuel Pellegrini

    West Ham sack Manuel Pellegrini

West Ham have sacked manager Manuel Pellegrini after a 2-1 home defeat by Leicester City – their ninth loss in the past 12 games.

The Hammers’ latest defeat on Saturday leaves them 17th, one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

Pellegrini departs after 18 months in charge, having been appointed in May 2018 on a three-year deal.

Former West Ham boss David Moyes is among the candidates being considered to replace Pellegrini.

Pellegrini was told about his departure shortly after conducting post-match interviews.

West Ham made the announcement within two hours of losing to Leicester.

  • Classy Ayew goal earns Palace late win at West Ham [Watch]

Jordan Ayew scored a sensational 90th-minute winner to help Crystal Palace come from behind and beat West Ham at Selhurst Park.

The striker danced through the Hammers defence on the edge of the box and then brilliantly beat goalkeeper Roberto with a calm chip.

West Ham had taken the lead through Robert Snodgrass before Cheikhou Kouyate equalised against his former club.

Match-winner Ayew set up Kouyate’s goal with a knock-down which allowed the midfielder to sweep home a volley from seven yards.

Palace climb up to eighth with the win but West Ham fall to 17th, just a point above the relegation zone as pressure increases again on manager Manuel Pellegrini.

  • West Ham end seven-game winless run at Stamford Bridge

West Ham relieved the pressure on boss Manuel Pellegrini as they ended their seven-game winless run with a first victory at Chelsea for 17 years.

Aaron Cresswell scored the winner three minutes after the break as he cut inside and fired low past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea had plenty of chances early on as Christian Pulisic missed the target from a few yards out. The American also wasted a great opportunity late on.

But Pellegrini was rewarded for picking 33-year-old David Martin in goal instead of Roberto as his side held firm under late pressure.

It proved an inspired choice as Martin, whose father Alvin is a West Ham legend, made several good saves to keep a clean sheet on his Hammers and Premier League debut.

The visitors also thought they had gone 2-0 up after 71 minutes, but Michail Antonio’s goal was ruled out for handball.

Victory lifted West Ham six points clear of the relegation zone while Chelsea failed to close the three-point gap to second-placed Manchester City and Leicester City in third.

However, the day belonged to Martin, who sank to his knees and was close to tears at the end of the game before celebrating in the stands with his father, who played in the West Ham defence for 20 years.

Frank Lampard’s decision to rotate his line-up following midweek exertions in Valencia backfired.

The majority of the back four and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga remained the same, but with Emerson coming in for Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back, alongside Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma and Reece James.

Mason Mount came in for N’Golo Kante to play with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in a midfield three with a more attacking look, while further forward Olivier Giroud replaced Tammy Abraham after the latter picked up a hip injury in Spain.

Pedro came in for Willian as one of the two wide players, Christian Pulisic keeping his place on the other wing.

  • EPL: West Ham overpower dismal Man Utd

EPL: West Ham overpower dismal Man Utd

West Ham United beat a toothless Manchester United 2-0 at home on Sunday to move into fourth place in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL).

It was a bad day for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, as they ended the game without an established striker after Marcus Rashford came off injured.

Ukrainian forward Andriy Yarmolenko put West Ham ahead at the end of a drab first half with a confident first-time finish into the bottom corner.

Aaron Cresswell sealed victory with an outstanding free-kick in the 84th minute.

The visitors were missing Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw through injury and lost teenage striker Mason Greenwood to illness.

They thus looked sluggish throughout the game and lacked spark and creativity.

Manchester United created no chances of note before the interval but Juan Mata missed a glorious opportunity early in the second half.

This was when he missed the target from close range, while Harry Maguire was later thwarted by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianksi.

Their slim hopes of getting back into the game were rocked when Rashford came off with a suspected muscle injury.

This left winger Daniel James to operate as a lone striker for the final half an hour.

West Ham now have 11 points after six games, the same as third-placed Leicester City, while Manchester United are eighth on eight points.
