Sevilla sign striker Hernandez on 3-year deal

Spanish side Sevilla have signed Mexican striker, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez from West Ham United on a three-year deal on transfer deadline day,the two clubs announced on Monday.

Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed but British media reported the La Liga club paid around eight million pounds ($9.82 million) for the 31 year-old who had less than a year left to run on his contract with the London club.

“West Ham United can confirm that striker Chicharito has joined Spanish Primera Division club Sevilla on a permanent basis,” the Premier League club said in a statement.

“The Mexican’s transfer ends a two-year stay in east London, `during which he scored 17 goals in 63 games in Claret and Blue.”

The Mexico international, who also played for Manchester United and Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, is no stranger to La Liga, having played for Real Madrid on a season-long loan in the 2014-15 season.

Hernandez is the 14th recruit of the close season for Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla, who are third in the league standings after three games.

West Ham inflict first loss on Tottenham at new stadium

Tottenham suffered a first defeat in their new stadium thanks to Michail Antonio’s superb second-half strike for West Ham.

Third-placed Spurs had won all four games since moving into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in early April.

But Antonio’s goal in the 67th minute was the first Tottenham had conceded at home in that period, and means they are not yet certain of finishing in the top four in the Premier League.

West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena cleared a Vincent Janssen header off the line in stoppage time.

The win ended a run of four games without victory for West Ham, who remain 11th in the table with two games to play this season.

West Ham finished strongly, with Antonio and defender Issa Diop forcing Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris into saves in the closing stages.

Spurs looked tired – they were playing their seventh match in April, and face one more when they entertain Ajax in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg.

EPL: Hazard doubles push Chelsea to top three

Eden Hazard scored one of the goals of the Premier League season as Chelsea beat West Ham to climb above Tottenham and Arsenal into third spot in the race for a Champions League place.

Hazard, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, evaded five players during a stunning run, before the Belgium forward calmly beat keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

He added a late second goal to cap a magnificent individual performance in an entertaining game at Stamford Bridge.

Gonzalo Higuain hit a post, while Hazard was denied a penalty after what looked like a foul by Marko Arnautovic, with Argentine midfielder Manuel Lanzini going closest for West Ham with a shot which was beaten away by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea, who can still qualify for next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League, are three points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal – who have a game in hand – after a third successive league win.

The Hammers remain 11th after a third defeat in four league games.

  • EPL: Hernandez handball helps West Ham beat Fulham

Javier Hernandez’s controversial goal with his arm contributed to Fulham’s 18th Premier League defeat of the season as West Ham fought back from behind to win at London Stadium.

On initial viewing, it looked like Hernandez had headed in from a yard to punish goalkeeper Sergio Rico’s mistake, but a replay from behind the goal clearly showed the Mexican striker converting via his arm.

Hernandez’s equaliser was followed by Issa Diop’s towering header five minutes before half-time and Michail Antonio nodded in a third late on.

The visitors had started brightly and got off to the perfect start after just three minutes through Ryan Babel’s close-range finish – the Dutchman making amends for a glaring miss within the opening 30 seconds.

Looking to get back into the game in the second period, Fulham skipper Tom Cairney had a low shot smothered by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, their only real chance of note.

West Ham move up to ninth but Claudio Ranieri’s side stay in 19th place – eight points adrift of safety – missing a crucial opportunity to claw back the deficit on 17th-placed Cardiff who were thrashed 5-1 by Watford.

  • Clubs should lose points over racism – Michail Antonio

West Ham forward Michail Antonio has said clubs should be docked points or forced to play behind closed doors if their fans are guilty of racial abuse during games.

The latest in a number of recent high-profile incidents saw Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah targeted at West Ham’s London Stadium last week.

The club handed evidence to the police and vowed to ban the fan for life, but Antonio says authorities must do more.

“Finding an individual does nothing,” said the West Ham forward.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he added: “That one person, he gets banned for life but no-one has a picture of his face. He can get back into the stadium.”

Antonio wants to see the Football Association impose stricter sanctions on clubs where such incidents take place.

“If you start playing games behind closed doors and deducting points, then the problem is inside themselves, they’re going to deal with it themselves,” he said.

“If you affect their team, the fans, his friends, are going to turn on him.

“I would blame the FA and Uefa because I don’t feel like they’re strict enough when it happens. If they want to hammer down on it next season, it could take five or 10 years.

“If they keep thinking of other solutions rather than just hitting it straight on the head, then it could take generations.”

  • Klopp is used to winning with offside goals, says Pellegrini

Klopp is used to winning with offside goals, says Pellegrini

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini said Jurgen Klopp “is used to winning with offside goals” after the Hammers held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw.

Michail Antonio’s equaliser prevented the Reds from going five points clear.

James Milner was in an offside position before setting up Sadio Mane’s opener but the assistant referee did not flag.

Liverpool’s Divock Origi should also have been flagged offside when he missed a late chance to win the game.

The managers then spoke at full-time and Chilean Pellegrini made clear afterwards he is still not over their highest-profile meeting six years ago.

Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund beat Pellegrini’s Malaga 3-2 in the 2013 Champions League quarter-finals courtesy of two injury-time goals. For the winner, four Dortmund players were offside.

“Klopp is used to winning with offside goals,” said Pellegrini. “He beat me against Malaga with a goal seven metres offside – so he cannot complain about anything.”

Of the Reds’ chances on Monday, he said: “They scored a goal one metre offside. And in the last minute with Origi in front of the linesman, again one metre offside.”

The former Manchester City boss added: “I said in the week that we need to win this game for our fans and if we are going to give a hand to Manchester City, well, they are my club also.

“Maybe that was the reason the manager of Liverpool didn’t like it.”

  • Liverpool held by West Ham to boost City title hopes

Liverpool faltered again in the 2018/2019 English Premier League (EPL) title race as they were held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Monday.

Sadio Mane gave Liverpool a 22nd minute lead, but Michail Antonio equalised soon after to earn West Ham a deserved point.

It meant Liverpool extended their lead to three points over Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola’s side will go top on goal difference if they beat Everton on Wednesday.

Javier Hernandez and Aaron Cresswell both shot just wide for the Hammers early on, while Hernandez also warmed the palms of Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

Liverpool went ahead in fortuitous circumstances in the 22nd minute through James Milner.

They appeared to be offside when he received the ball, crossed low into the area and Mane had time to swivel and fire home past Lukasz Fabianski.

The lead lasted only six minutes though as Naby Keita failed to track the run of Michail Antonio from a free kick and he fired across Alisson and inside the far post.

An edgy Liverpool had a huge let-off minutes before the break when Felipe Anderson’s free kick found youngster Declan Rice completely unmarked but he headed wide of a gaping goal.

Liverpool failed to find another gear after the break and Mark Noble could have won it for West Ham.

  • I want to beat Liverpool to help Man City – Pellegrini

I want to beat Liverpool to help Man City – Pellegrini

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to get his side’s season back on course by beating Liverpool on Monday – and do his old side Manchester City a favour at the same time.

Premier League leaders Liverpool are two points clear in the title race but have a game in hand over rivals City, who beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday.

Pellegrini won the league in 2014 during a three-year spell at City.

“If we win I will be very happy for our club first,” he said.

“We need a good performance against the leaders.

“After that, if we can give a hand to Manchester City, it’s not our problem, but of course I am a fan of Manchester City also.”

West Ham are 12th in the league and have lost their last three games in all competitions after a 1-0 win over Arsenal on 12 January.

Pellegrini confirmed that defender Winston Reid, out for almost a year with a knee injury, is not expected back in action this season.

  • Teenager Rice gives West Ham rare win over Arsenal

Teenager Rice gives West Ham rare win over Arsenal

A superb finish by West Ham midfielder Declan Rice – the 19-year-old’s first Premier League goal – earned his side a fine win and dented Arsenal’s top-four ambitions.

Rice beat Bernd Leno with a first-time shot after a good lay-off by Samir Nasri, who was making his first top-flight appearance in England since August 2016.

In a highly-competitive London derby, Alexandre Lacazette was denied by an excellent save from Lukasz Fabianski as Arsenal failed to score in the league for the first time since the opening day of the season.

West Ham were full value for their win, with Marko Arnautovic, Rice, Nasri and Felipe Anderson all going close when the game was goalless.

While West Ham move up to eighth in the table after a sixth win in nine league games, Arsenal remain fifth.

The Gunners are three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who entertain Newcastle.

  • Anderson double earns West Ham victory over Southampton

Anderson double earns West Ham victory over Southampton

Felipe Anderson’s double helped West Ham come from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s and move into the top half of the Premier League.

After a quiet first half, the hosts took the lead in scrappy fashion through Nathan Redmond after Lukasz Fabianski had parried his initial effort.

But West Ham were only behind for three minutes before Anderson’s 20-yard low strike beat Alex McCarthy.

The third goal – all in nine minutes – came again from Anderson, who powerfully shot home after being released by Michail Antonio to put the Hammers ahead.

Southampton pushed for an equaliser, but Fabianski and the visiting defence held firm to secure West Ham their fifth win in six games.
