West Ham end Newcastle’s unbeaten run with Hernandez double

Javier Hernandez scored twice as West Ham ended Newcastle’s run of three wins with an emphatic victory at St James’ Park.

The match was a tale of two attacks – one which made the most of their chances, and the other which was wasteful and short of quality.

The Mexican grabbed his first in the 11th minute, just as some Newcastle fans were taking to their seats following a “walk-in protest” against the club owner – had they waited another minute they would not have witnessed the calamitous defending from their side.

Robert Snodgrass was allowed to run down the left and deliver an in-swinging cross for his Mexican team-mate who got himself in front of Federico Fernandez to poke in.

Hernandez then missed a couple of great chances before he fired home the second from Marko Arnautovic’s flick-on.

And with the final kick of the game, Felipe Anderson capped off an exceptional display by slotting in West Ham’s third under the body of keeper Martin Dubravka.

The victory was only the Hammers’ second in the league at Newcastle since 1998, and moves them into 13th spot, on 15 points, Newcastle drop down to 14th and have 12 points.

  • EPL: Man City stay top after thrashing West Ham

Manchester City recorded an eighth consecutive victory in all competitions as they swatted aside West Ham 4-0 in the Premier League.

The game was over by half-time, with David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane all getting in on the act.

Silva poked home Sterling’s deflected cross for the opener and Sane then rolled in a low cross for Sterling to tap into an empty net.

Sane added a fine third from Sterling’s volleyed cross, with the German’s touch leaving defender Fabian Balbuena on the ground, allowing him to slot home.

West Ham were much better in the second half and Michail Antonio hit the post – but Sane scored his second and City’s fourth in injury time.

Manuel Pellegrini’s Hammers side, who saw Marko Arnautovic hobble off late on, have now won only once in seven games.

  • Former Arsenal midfielder Nasri to have West Ham medical

Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri is to undergo a medical at West Ham before a proposed move to the London club.

Nasri, 31, is allowed to start training again this month after completing an 18-month doping ban.

It is understood that the former France international will join the Hammers for an initial six months with the option to extend.

He will be able to play from 1 January, 2019 and would be reunited with one of his bosses at City, Manuel Pellegrini.

Nasri most recently played for Turkish club Antalyaspor, but his contract terminated on 31 January this year.

A month later he was banned, initially for six months, for using an intravenous drip treatment that contravened World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rules, leading to a Spanish Anti-Doping investigation.

It was alleged that in 2016, while on loan from City to Sevilla, he received 500 milliliters of hydration in the form of sterile water containing micronutrient components, which exceeds the permissible limit.

In February 2017, a request by Sevilla for a retroactive therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for Nasri was refused by Uefa, and its decision was later upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The France midfielder has made 215 appearances in the Premier League, featuring for Arsenal from 2008 to 2011 before moving to Manchester City for £25m, where he stayed until August 2017.

  • Ndidi rescues point for Leicester against West Ham [EPL standings]

Leicester City midfielder Wilifred Ndidi’s 89th minute strike earns The Foxes late draw against West Ham at King Power stadium.
West Ham got an early lead in the 30th minute with a powerful header from defender Fabian Balbuena.
West Ham defender Declan Rice reacted to the late equaliser saying ,”It’s difficult to do much more than we did. We got that slice of luck that we were more than warranted to”.

“We need to work on getting that second ball. They were looking for it and were first to it. We need to be more switched on and not concede those kinds of goals”.

“The manager told us not to give them anything to hang on to. We tried to get the goal early but we couldn’t. I think if we had we could have gone on to win the game comfortably but we kept plugging away”.

Leicester goalscorer Wilfred Ndidi said, “It was really difficult in the first half but the second half was better. We just had to keep going”.

“I didn’t know if it [the goal] was going to come but it did eventually. It was obviously a studs up tackle [from Mark Noble]. I think it was the right decision.”

Mark Noble was shown red card for studs-up tackle on Ndidi in 38th minute of the game.

Chelsea face Burnley, while Arsenal play away at Crystal Palace and Manchester United host Everton on Sunday.

  • EPL: Arsenal defeat West Ham in first league victory

Unai Emery claimed his first win in charge of Arsenal as Issa Diop’s own goal and a stoppage-time Danny Welbeck strike secured a 3-1 Premier League victory over West Ham at Emirates Stadium.

Marko Arnautovic gave the visitors a 25th-minute lead, with Nacho Monreal restoring parity five minutes later.

An entertaining and error-strewn contest continued to flow from end to end but an injury to Arnautovic robbed West Ham of their prime attacking threat before Diop erred.

Welbeck came off the bench to gleefully blast in from close range, ensuring Manuel Pellegrini’s fledgling West Ham tenure stands at three defeats out of three.

Arnautovic asked constant questions of Arsenal’s high and shaky backline and had already thrashed into the side netting before he exchanged passes with Felipe Anderson to arrow a 20-yard drive into the bottom corner.

Monreal made light of an earlier knock to slam home the equaliser when West Ham failed to clear Hector Bellerin’s cross.

Bellerin’s mistakes at the other end remained a problem, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos forced into a desperate block from Felipe Anderson before the Spain full-back played Robert Snodgrass onside to shoot too close to Petr Cech.

Cech stood firm to thwart Arnautovic in the 55th minute and apparent knee injury he sustained during that attack proved pivotal.

Diop allowed Alexandre Lacazette too much room to turn and shoot, with ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski beating the shot away, and the 21-year-old centre-back was the architect of his own misery 20 minutes from time.

A miscued clearance spiralled up in the air and Aaron Ramsey nodded down for Lacazette to drive into the goalmouth, with Diop only able to divert into his own net.

Felipe Anderson continued to probe, flashing agonisingly across the face of goal in injury time, meaning Arsenal nerves only settled when Welbeck swivelled to dispatch Bellerin’s pass.

  • EPL: Bournemouth come from behind to win at West Ham

Bournemouth scored twice in six second-half minutes to come from behind and beat West Ham at London Stadium.

The Hammers, beaten 4-0 at Liverpool last Sunday, took the lead when Marko Arnautovic converted a penalty after Javier Hernandez had been clipped by Nathan Ake.

But Callum Wilson equalised with a fine individual goal as he ran with the ball from near the halfway line and slotted past Lukasz Fabianski.

  • EPL: West Ham sign Yarmolenko from Dortmund

EPL: West Ham sign Yarmolenko from Dortmund

West Ham’s new signing Andriy Yarmolenko says he has joined an “interesting project” after moving from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal.

The 28-year-old scored three goals in 18 appearances for the Bundesliga side after joining in August 2017.

He had previously spent 11 seasons with Dynamo Kiev and joins the Hammers for an undisclosed fee.

“The team wants to achieve high things and I am excited for this challenge,” said the Ukraine winger.

“The Premier League is the best in the world and I know an interesting project is being built at West Ham.”

Yarmolenko has 35 goals in 77 caps for Ukraine and only Andriy Shevchenko has more scored more times for the country.

He becomes new manager Manuel Pellegrini’s fifth signing of the summer and follows the arrival on Monday of former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who was a free agent.

The Hammers have also signed defender Issa Diop for a club-record fee, as well as former Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and defender Ryan Fredericks.

“When we had the opportunity to sign him, we did not hesitate, because he really is the kind of player we were looking for,” said West Ham director of football Mario Husillos.

“I think Manuel Pellegrini is the perfect coach for Andriy and his style of play.”

  • Jack Wilshere joins West Ham on three-year deal

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has joined West Ham on a three-year deal and says he has moved to the club he supported as a boy.

The 26-year-old England player’s contract with the Gunners expired at the end of June.

“It feels special. Many people know that I’ve had a special bond with this club growing up,” he said.

“I’ve got good memories of my childhood supporting West Ham, watching them at Upton Park.”

The Hammers are also closing in on the signing of Ukraine forward Andriy Yarmolenko.

A fee of about 20m euros (£17.66m) is understood to have been agreed with Borussia Dortmund.

Wilshere is set to fly to Switzerland to link up with new West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini’s squad at the club’s pre-season training camp.

Despite his career being badly affected by injuries, the Hammers are confident Wilshere can make a meaningful contribution to a squad being overhauled by Pellegrini.

West Ham director of football Mario Husillos said: “Manuel and I identified him as a target as soon as we joined the club and we are delighted to have succeeded in securing Jack’s signature above a number of other teams.”

Wilshere made 197 first-team appearances for Arsenal and was part of the 2014 and 2015 FA Cup-winning sides.

After spending the 2016-17 campaign on loan at fellow Premier League side Bournemouth, he returned to the Gunners and made 38 appearances last season but was not included in Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad.

Yarmolenko, 28, has scored 35 times in 77 appearances for his country.

He joined Dortmund from Dynamo Kiev in August 2017 but struggled to find his best form in Germany, scoring six goals in 26 appearances.

  • Manchester United secure second place with West Ham draw

Manchester United secured the point they needed to finish second in the Premier League with a dull 0-0 draw at West Ham United on Thursday.

There were few chances in a tepid first half, though Alexis Sanchez forced a good save from West Ham keeper Adrian.

Marko Arnautovic looked the most likely West Ham player to make a breakthrough.

Paul Pogba curled a couple of shots narrowly wide for Manchester United.

The France midfielder was booked in the dying stages for kicking out at West Ham’s Mark Noble, who was also shown a yellow card as tempers frayed.

Manchester United, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, moved four points clear of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur with one league game left.

They will play Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 19.

West Ham are 15th in the table.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was pleased to secure second place.

“We are the second best team in the Premier League, a fantastic competition with lots of good teams with six teams trying to finish first,” he told the BBC.

“We came second, I am not totally happy that is not my nature. But since the moment we felt it was impossible to finish first we had the target to finish second and it is done today.

“I am not critical of the performance at all. In the 80th minute we know that a point was enough so we start thinking about that and we let the game go.”

West Ham manager David Moyes was happy to draw with his former club.

“A good point for us,” he said. “Our boys showed a great attitude after getting safe at the weekend.

“We have conceded a lot of goals this season so a clean sheet is great. We have done the job we came to do – we are not relegated.”

  • Andy Carroll resumes training after apologising to Moyes

Andy Carroll resumes training after apologising to Moyes

Controversial West Ham striker, Andy Carroll returned to training on Wednesday after apologising to manager David Moyes, Sky Sports News understands.

Carroll was sent home from training on Monday having refused to apologise for leaving the bench and heading down the tunnel during West Ham’s 4-1 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.

The Englishman apologised to Moyes and is hoping to play a part as the Hammers head for a crucial match in their relegation fight at Leicester on Saturday.

Striker Carroll was clearly frustrated as he remained on the bench as an unused substitute before disappearing down the tunnel towards the end of the game.

In his post-match interview, Moyes promised to “deal with it”, and the pair were involved in a heated exchange before the Scot sent Carroll home on Monday.

After a 4-1 loss to the champions left the Hammers just three points outside the drop zone with three games left, Moyes told Sky Sports: “In this situation, what you need is everybody to be a team member.”

Carroll, 29, has made 16 appearances for West Ham this season, as he has continued to struggle with injury problems. He was also sent off against Burnley last October.
