West Ham: Andy Carroll sent home after row with David Moyes

West Ham striker Andy Carroll was sent home from training on Monday following an argument with manager David Moyes.

It is understood Moyes spoke to Carroll about his conduct after he left the substitutes’ bench during Sunday’s 4-1 home defeat by Manchester City.

The pair had a heated exchange before Carroll, 29, was told to go home.

After Moyes made a triple substitution during the second half against City, Carroll went to the dressing room and did not return before full-time.

Moyes was known to be irritated at Carroll’s behaviour, believing the former England international should have remained to support his team-mates.

It is not known whether there will be any further disciplinary action, although West Ham’s players are not training on Tuesday as they have been given the day off.

The news comes as the Hammers continue to battle for their Premier League future.

In West Ham’s previous home game, Carroll came off the bench to score a late equaliser against relegation rivals Stoke.

But after successive 4-1 defeats by Arsenal and Manchester City, the Hammers are three points above the relegation zone with a worse goal difference than third-bottom Southampton.

The uncertainty over the club’s position means no decision has been made about the future of Moyes, or goalkeeper Joe Hart, who is on loan from City until the end of the season.

  • Man City reach 100 Premier League goals by thrashing West Ham

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed the “incredible” numbers produced by his side as they reached 100 Premier League goals for the season with a 4-1 win at struggling West Ham.

The champions’ emphatic victory at London Stadium left the Hammers in a precarious position above the relegation zone.

“The numbers are a consequence of what we have done,” Guardiola said.

“We are so happy to be getting close to history. We will try to surpass the number of goals and points.

“We wanted to win today so that we can get the record of 96 points at home when we get the trophy in front of our people next week.”

City – who are now on 93 points – took the lead when Leroy Sane’s shot deflected off the head of Patrice Evra and wrong-footed Hammers goalkeeper Adrian.

A series of West Ham defensive mishaps culminated in a Pablo Zabaleta own goal which gave City a two-goal advantage and saw them reach the landmark century.

Aaron Cresswell gave the Hammers a foothold in the game shortly before the break when he curled home a free-kick inside Ederson’s near post.

However, inspired by a brilliant performance from Raheem Sterling, City reasserted their control of the contest early in the second half.

Having earlier teed up Sane, Sterling claimed a hat-trick of assists after the break when he set up Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho to finish clinically from inside the box.

West Ham are three points clear of 18th-placed Southampton, who occupy the final relegation place.

  • Javier Hernandez earns West Ham valuable point at Chelsea

Javier Hernandez earns West Ham valuable point at Chelsea

Substitute Javier Hernandez scored an equaliser to earn West Ham United an unlikely point in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The home side had dominated the London derby for 73 minutes, leading for almost half that time after Cesar Azpilicueta poked home following a short corner.

Their Spanish striker Alvaro Morata also had the ball in the net twice but was narrowly offside each time.

West Ham, who had been much improved in beating Southampton 3-0 a week ago, offered little until Hernandez’s intervention soon after coming on.

Chelsea midfielders Willian and Eden Hazard were the game’s most creative forces and were both involved in the few scoring opportunities before their team finally struck.

Hazard linked up cleverly with Willian, the Brazilian bringing a good save from Joe Hart.

From the subsequent corner, however, West Ham switched off and allowed Azpilicueta two bites before he jabbed the ball in.

Willian squandered a good chance early in the second half, shooting wide of the far post, and Chelsea were made to pay thereafter.

Marko Arnautovic set up Hernandez to score only a few minutes after the Mexican striker had come on.

Hart, keen to restore his reputation as England’s best goalkeeper before the World Cup finals, made fine saves from Marcos Alonso and substitute Olivier Giroud late in the game.

“We did well in the first half apart from the goal which was really poor,” Hart said.

“They are the champions, let’s not forget. They created a lot but we stood strong.”

With six games left, the draw left West Ham in 14th place, only six points short of the target of 40 for survival that their manager David Moyes has set them.

Chelsea’s prospects of catching fourth-placed Tottenham, who are 10 points ahead of them, now look even more remote.

There was an emotional tribute before the game, and after eight minutes of play, to Ray Wilkins, the former Chelsea captain and assistant manager, who died in midweek.

  • West Ham defender, Reid to miss out for rest of the season

West Ham defender Winston Reid has been ruled out for the rest of the season because of injury.

Reid, 29, was taken off on a stretcher with an oxygen mask over his face after being knocked unconscious and twisting a knee in Saturday’s defeat by Swansea.

Full-back Sam Byram, 24, could also miss the rest of the campaign after injuring his ankle in the 4-1 loss.

David Moyes’ side are currently 14th in the Premier League, three points above the relegation places.

Defenders Angelo Ogbonna and James Collins, who missed the Swansea game through illness and a tight hamstring respectively, should be available for the game against Burnley at the London Stadium on Saturday.

  • Swansea moves out of bottom three after thrashing West Ham

Swansea moved out of the relegation zone as they comfortably dispatched a dismal West Ham side to seal a seventh consecutive home win.

Ki Sung-yueng shot low into the corner from Andre Ayew’s pass to open the scoring inside 10 minutes, before Mike van der Hoorn nodded in the South Korean’s corner amid slack marking.

Between those two first-half goals, Winston Reid was put in a neck brace and taken off on a stretcher after suffering a bad injury in a goalmouth scramble.

He received treatment for 10 minutes after appearing to be knocked unconscious, and was taken to hospital for a scan.

After the break, West Ham crumbled further. Andy King tapped in the rebound from an Adrian save that denied Andre Ayew’s header from another corner, before Cheikhou Kouyate tripped Ayew in the box.

Andre’s brother Jordan Ayew coolly slotted the spot-kick into the corner to round off a vital win that was only slightly dampened by Michail Antonio’s late consolation, the substitute winger finishing from Aaron Cresswell’s delivery.

Carlos Carvalhal’s impressive work continues. His team are now up to 13th in the table – climbing above the Hammers on goal difference – having been bottom when he took over in late December.

West Ham drop to 14th, with both sides still only three points clear of the bottom three.

  • West Ham sign Patrice Evra on a free transfer

West Ham have signed former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra until the end of the season.

The Frenchman, 36, has been without a club since he left Marseille by mutual consent in November after kicking one of the club’s fans before a Europa League match.

Evra was banned from Uefa competition for the rest of the season but is able to play domestically for West Ham.

He played for Hammers boss David Moyes when he managed Manchester United.

Evra then left Old Trafford for Juventus in 2014, and had three seasons in Italy before moving to Marseille in January 2017.

He played 379 games for United between 2006 and 2014 and won nine major trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

Evra made nine appearances for Marseille this season, most recently in October, before the incident prior to a European game against Vitoria Guimaraes on 2 November.

  • Moyes wants West Ham playing like Tottenham and Chelsea in the future

West Ham manager David Moyes says he wants his side to play “like Tottenham, like Chelsea” if he remains in charge beyond the end of this season.

Moyes, 54, has guided the side out of the relegation zone and up to 15th place in the Premier League since he was appointed in November.

He signed a short-term contract following the sacking of Slaven Bilic.

“I’ve got an idea in my head how I want it to look,” Moyes told the BBC’s Football Focus.

“I want us to go to those teams and say, ‘we’re having a game with you and we’re going to see if we can beat you’,” added Moyes.

“At the moment, we just don’t have the same level of quality of players as those teams do, but I’m saying that for probably every other team bar the top six or seven in the Premier League.”

The former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland manager lost three of his first four games in charge as he got to grips with his new side.

However, since the start of December, Moyes has led the side to a win over Chelsea, draws against Arsenal and Tottenham and a narrow defeat at Manchester City.

West Ham have lost once in their last eight Premier League games.

Will West Ham do any transfer business in January?

The January transfer window gives them an opportunity to strengthen and it has also been reported they would be happy to sell striker Javier Hernandez.

Moyes admits he does not know how busy he will be this month.

He said: “We’d like to add to it if we can but I want to try to get the right type of players. I want to try to help West Ham prepare now and also have that vision when I lift my eyes a little bit higher up.

“I want to look a wee bit further forward and what we should be trying to get.

“When you start doing that, it doesn’t make it quite as easy a decision as saying ‘let’s get somebody for today’ because we also need it for tomorrow as well.”

  • West Ham boss, David Moyes says, ‘I can do any job in the world’

David Moyes says he could manage any team in the world and wants to prove it at West Ham.Since the Scot was appointed Hammers boss last month, the club has moved out of the relegation zone and are unbeaten in their last three games.

Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Stoke followed a victory over Chelsea and a draw against Arsenal.

“I think I’m capable of doing the job at any club in the world so I’m sure I can do it at West Ham,” he said.

West Ham are now 15th in the Premier League and travel to Arsenal on Tuesday for a Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Moyes, 54, is rebuilding his reputation after unsuccessful spells in charge of Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland.

“I have to come here and show I can do it,” he said. “You have to come and show what you can do. Your reputation doesn’t stand for anything.

“You have to come here and try to get up and show you’re capable of doing the job.”

  • West Ham earn first win under Moyes as they beat Chelsea

West Ham won for the first time under David Moyes as Marko Arnautovic’s first goal for the club proved enough to beat a disjointed Chelsea at London Stadium.

The Hammers scored the only goal after just six minutes when Arnautovic curled a deft strike into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Manuel Lanzini on the edge of the area.

Chelsea responded well before the break but were repelled by an organised West Ham defence and two solid saves from Adrian, retaining his spot in place of the dropped Joe Hart.

Both sides became increasingly ragged in the second half but West Ham desperately held on, with Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata firing wide when clean through late on.

Despite victory, the hosts remain in the bottom three, though they have drawn level on points with 17th-placed West Brom, who face fellow strugglers Swansea at 15:00 GMT.

Defeat means champions Chelsea will finish the weekend 14 points behind leaders Manchester City if Pep Guardiola’s side beat rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

  • West Ham and Sporting Lisbon resolve William Carvalho dispute

West Ham say the dispute with Sporting Lisbon over their summer pursuit of Portugal’s William Carvalho was caused by a “breakdown in communication” and the matter has now been resolved.

Sporting said they were going to report the Hammers to Fifa for an illegal pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder.

The Portuguese club also made personal comments about West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold.

“Friendly relations between the clubs will resume,” said a Hammers statement.

In September, West Ham said they made a bid for the Portugal defensive midfielder and released emails that claim to show their official approach.

But Sporting’s communications director Nuno Saraiva questioned the validity of the leaked emails, which purport to show a 25m euros (£22.8m) offer, as well suggestions Sullivan was called a “liar” and a “parasite” in a Facebook post.

West Ham refuted the claims, called them “attention seeking”, and considered legal action.

However on Tuesday the Premier League club said: “West Ham and Sporting acknowledge that a breakdown in communication based in contacts between representatives from both clubs in respect of a possible transfer of William Carvalho was the cause of a misunderstanding.

“Subsequent to this, the clubs have had positive communications and the matter is now resolved. On this basis, there will be no barriers to both clubs negotiating or working together in the future.”
