Europa Cup: Liverpool, Brighton, Roma win, Olympiacos end West Ham’s 17 game unbeaten run

Liverpool FC maintained 100 percent record at the Europa cup as the English side pummeled Toulose of France 5-1 at Anfiled.

Portugal forward, Diogo Jota opened the scoring for the hosts after nine minutes, embarking on a solo run that saw him navigate past four defenders before planting the ball into the bottom corner.

Toulouse responded seven minutes later as Thijs Dallinga perfectly timed his run from the halfway line into the box, effortlessly slotting home in the Group E clash.

Liverpool top the group by five points over Union Saint Gilloise, who beat visitors LASK 2-1, and Toulouse, with both teams on four points. LASK are bottom without a point.

West Ham’s unbeaten European run ended in Athens on Thursday as they suffered a 2-1 Europa League defeat to Olympiacos on Thursday.

West Ham, which had become the first English side to go 17 consecutive European matches unbeaten, conceded two first-half goals to halt their perfect start to this season campaign.

David Moyes, who led his side to the Europa Conference League title last season, made seven changes for their Europa League Group A clash in the Greek capital.

Elsewhere Brighton were 2-0 winners over Dutchside Ajax Amsterdam, while Roma defeated Slavia by 2-0 in another encounter.

Italian side,  Atlanta drew  2-2 at Sturm Graz in a group D encounter while Bayer Leverkusen defeated Qarabag 3-1 at the Bay Arena.

  • Believe in the process, Pochettino tells fans after Chelsea’s defeat

Believe in the process, Pochettino tells fans after Chelsea’s defeat

Mauricio Pochettino called on Chelsea fans to “believe in the process” after his side slumped to a 3-1 defeat away to West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Argentine former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris St Germain manager has taken on a big challenge at Stamford Bridge, trying to fashion a new identity for an expensively-assembled squad.

Eight players have been signed for around 325 million pounds (414 million dollars) since he arrived in the summer as Chelsea try to re-invent themselves after finishing 12th last season.

One of them, Moises Caicedo, whose fee from Brighton could break the British record, was given a debut off the bench.

But his impact rather summed up Chelsea’s day as they remained on just one point from their opening two games.

His rash tackle inside the penalty area on Emerson in stoppage time gave Lucas Paqueta the opportunity to wrap up the points for West Ham from the spot and he made no mistake.

Chelsea have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games and have now lost four London derbies in a row, but Pochettino is certainly not about to start panicking.

“That’s football. Teams like us, we need to get the right balance. I think today there were a few actions we didn’t manage well and we concede.

“Overall it is this type of game that is difficult to explain. You had the possession, you create and maybe you were the better side but in the end you lose,” Pochettino told reporters.

Chelsea had 75 per cent of the possession at the London Stadium, had 17 attempts at goal and 706 passes compared to West Ham’s 225.

But apart from a very well taken goal by Carney Chukwuemeka they had nothing to show for it with Enzo Fernandez, still the British record signing, missing a penalty to make it 2-1.

“It was the frustration when we miss the penalty. We were playing well and we didn’t get the reward.

“Disappointed but this is only the beginning. We need to believe in the process. I think we are going to be stronger and for sure be really competitive,” Pochettino said.

For West Ham it was a massively encouraging afternoon and a result that suggested they could avoid a season spent looking over their shoulders at the relegation places as they did last time.

James Ward-Prowse made an instant impact on his debut, setting up the opening two goals for Nayef Aguerd and Michail Antonio.

Even after Aguerd was sent off midway through the second half, West Ham’s resilience shone through.

“We hung in there at times, were resolute. Even at 10 men we stuck in and got another goal.

“We stuck at it, did the basics well and got the three points,” manager David Moyes said.

EPL: 10-man West Ham thrash Chelsea 3-1 in London derby

10-man West Ham on Sunday evening defeated visiting Chelsea by 3-1  at the London Stadium courtesy of goals by Nayef Aguerd, Michail Antonio and Lucas Pacqueta.

Nigerian-born Camey Chukwuemeka scored Chelsea’s only goal in the 28th minute of the feisty  London derby.

New boy Moises Caicedo became just the second player to give away a penalty on his Premier League debut for Chelsea, after Wayne Bridge against Liverpool in August 2003.

Chelsea’s coach Mauricio Pochettino kicked off his Blues tenure last weekend with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Despite not picking up all three points, there were plenty of positives for Pochettino to take from his first match as head coach.

Chelsea have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games (D5 L8) and are winless in six since a 3-1 win at Bournemouth in May (D3 L3).

The Blues have also lost four consecutive Premier League London derbies for the first time.

  • West Ham midfielder Paqueta investigated over bets

West Ham midfielder Paqueta investigated over bets

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta is reportedly being investigated by the FA for betting on games.

BBC Sport says the investigation involves betting in Brazil on yellow cards received by Paqueta. The probe is also involving FIFA.

Speaking on Friday, Brazil’s interim coach Fernando Diniz said: “Paqueta was on the list, he’s a player I like a lot. It’s a time for him to resolve these issues.

“People need time to sort these issues out. He’s a player I love, I have the best impressions of him.”

Paqueta is a confirmed target for Manchester City and Sky Sports says he insists he had not placed any bets himself and was shocked by the reports.

  • EPL: Arsenal increase Declan Rice’s bid to £105m in new British record

EPL: Arsenal increase Declan Rice’s bid to £105m in new British record

Arsenal Football Club have tabled an increased bid for West Ham’s Declan Rice on Tuesday night.

The Gunners initial bid was turned down by the Hammers,

According to The Athletic, the Gunner’s latest proposal is worth £100m upfront and £5m in add-ons.

If the Hammers accept this offer, it will be the new British record fee for a player.

Arsenal’s second bid was £75m upfront and £15m in add-ons.

It was rejected by West Ham, who also rejected a £80m upfront and £10m in add-ons.

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, is desperate to beef up his midfield ahead of the new season, with Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey expected to leave the Emirates this summer.

EPL: Arsenal table £100million for Declan Rice

In their bid to ward off interest from rival club sides, Arsenal  Football Club are set to submit a £100million offer for West Ham captain Declan Rice.

Recall that Manchester City have also indicated interest in Rice who was exceptional all through last season for West Ham FC.

The Daily Mail reports that the Hammers are expecting a new bid after a recent offer worth £90m from the Gunners was rejected.

City’s interest in the England midfielder is said to have sharpened the focus at the Emirates, as Mikel Arteta has earmarked the England international as his top target.

Rice is believed to prefer a move to Arsenal than to Manchester, but the issue may be taken out of his hands if Arsenal fail to match West Ham’s valuation.

The Hammers have previously confirmed that their midfielder is almost certain to leave this summer.

  • Man Utd adjust player-swap offer for Declan Rice

Man Utd adjust player-swap offer for Declan Rice

Manchester United are ready to offer Harry Maguire and Anthony Elanga plus cash for Declan Rice.

The West Ham United captain is up for sale, with Manchester City and Arsenal also in the race.

While the latter two teams are in prime position to secure Rice, United believe they can tempt the Hammers.

Elanga is a talented winger who would fit David Moyes’ counter-attacking setup, while Maguire is also an ideal centre-half for his playstyle.

Per The Mail, United have put in the bid that would include £40 million in cash and those two players.

West Ham may be interested in Elanga and Maguire, but may still believe they can get more cash out of United.

Another who West Ham admires at Man United is midfielder Scott McTominay.

  • I hope Arsenal sign Declan Rice – Wilshere

I hope Arsenal sign Declan Rice – Wilshere

Arsenal U-18 coach Jack Wilshere hopes they can sign West Ham captain Declan Rice.

Wilshere played with Rice during his spell with the Hammers.

He told AFTV: “I saw his interview, I think he made it clear that he knows there’s speculation and everyone knows that Arsenal are interested.

“Listen, what Dec’s done for a young player, for his club West Ham, for England, to lift a trophy. But also he’s their main man, to have that on your shoulders at 23, 24 is special.

“So if anyone gets him, I hope it is Arsenal because I think he will be sensational for the next eight to 10 years and he eventually could be an Arsenal captain. So I hope he does come but it’s down to him.”

  • Europa Conference League: Moyes hands over medal to father

Europa Conference League: Moyes hands over medal to father

David Moyes handed his Europa Conference League winners’ medal to his father after ending West Ham United’s 43-year wait for a trophy.

Jarrod Bowen’s dramatic last-minute goal sank Fiorentina 2-1 on a historic and emotional night in Prague.

The victory helped the Hammers to secure the first piece of silverware since 1980’s FA Cup, and a first European trophy since 1965,

Moyes’ dad, 87-year-old David Snr, has been on every step of West Ham’s European tour and joined his son on the pitch after the final whistle.

“He was the first one, I thought I should get it round his neck,” said the jubilant West Ham boss. “He’s watched a lot over the years and I hope he enjoyed it.”

West Ham led through a Said Benrahma penalty kick on the hour but were immediately pegged back by Giacomo Bonaventura’s strike.

But when Bowen chased Lucas Paqueta’s ball over the top, Moyes almost found himself going full Jose Mourinho.

“The moment he went through I was edging down the touchline,” he added. “If it was going to be anyone, I thought ‘this is the moment’.

“But I couldn’t do a full Mourinho knee slide as the grass was a bit dry and I’d have ended up on my belly.”

Moyes has written his name in West Ham folklore, joining Ron Greenwood and John Lyall as trophy-winning Hammers managers.

A place in next season’s Europa League means the club has qualified for Europe three campaigns in a row, for the first time.

“I actually think the last two years have been an incredible journey,” he said.

“It’s an incredible achievement to do so well in Europe. You look at some of the very good teams who find it a struggle. It’s great credit, we’ve turned a disappointing season into a super season.”

Bowen has come a long way from beginning his career at non-league Hereford, and he is planning to party.

“I’m so buzzing, all of us are just going to go mad I think,” he said. “You have to celebrate.

“When the final whistle went I just thought ‘this party is going to be crazy’.

“I’m just a little boy from Leominster who never thought I’d be talking like this. My family are crying and it just shows me how far I’ve come.”

It was a memorable way to sign off for Declan Rice who is destined to leave this summer.

He is with the legacy of becoming only the third captain, along with Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds, to lift silverware in the club’s 128-year history.

The England midfielder has a year left on his contract, and West Ham hold the option of another, but Arsenal are poised to firm up their interest in the coming days.

The only downside to West Ham’s big night was an object thrown from their end which left Cristiano Biraghi with a nasty cut on the back of his head.

The incident forced referee Carlos Del Cerro Grande to briefly halt play while a message over the public address (PA) system implored the fans to stop throwing missiles.

The club “unreservedly condemned” the incident while a UEFA inquest will follow, with charges likely.

It was a double Cup disappointment for Fiorentina, who were only narrowly beaten 1-2 by Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia last month.

“We lost two finals playing really well, and it’s a shame,” said coach Vincenzo Italiano. “Tonight, I honestly didn’t imagine it could finish like this.”
