Europa Conference League: Bowen’s dying minute goal wins title for West Ham

West Ham United finally broke a 58 year old jinx by winning a continental competition in Europe.

The Hammers  won their first major European trophy since 1965 by beating Fiorentina 2-1 in the Europa Conference League final.

Winger Jarrod Bowen scored a late winner inn the dying minute of the game for David Moyes’ side in Prague.

Bowen raced onto Lucas Paqueta’s defence-splitting through-ball to bear down on goal and rifle past Pietro Terracciano.

West Ham had opened the scoring just after the hour through Said Benrahma’s penalty from Cristiano Biraghi’s handball.

However, Fiorentina equalised a few minutes later as Giacomo Bonaventura found the far corner with a well-taken finish.

The Hammers withstood heavy pressure at times, but held firm before scoring a late winner that sealed a long-awaited triumph.

West Ham now have their first major trophy in 43 years. It’s also their second European trophy after the 1965 Cup Winners’ Cup.

West Ham will join Liverpool, Brighton to feature in next year’s Europa League competition by virtue of winning the Europa Conference League.

  • Anxious night for Guardiola ends as Manchester City pip West Ham

Anxious night for Guardiola ends as Manchester City pip West Ham

In the end, it was all smiles and back-slapping as hosts Manchester City walked off with a 3-0 win over West Ham United on Wednesday.

It was a game in which Erling Haaland became the highest goal scorer in an English Premier League (EPL) season, having notched his 35th goal.

The victory put Manchester City back on top of the Premier League table, one point above Arsenal who the previous night had thrown down the gauntlet by outclassing Chelsea.

But it was not quite as simple as it appeared and manager Pep Guardiola wore a frown throughout a first half in which his side dominated.

They twice struck the woodwork but could find no way through West Ham’s massed ranks.

Anxiety was in the air even after Nathan Ake opened the scoring in the 49th minute.

But it evaporated when Haaland made it 2-0 in the 70th minute with his 51st goal in all competitions in his devastating maiden season in England.

“Every game is hard. We didn’t play bad but our structure wasn’t great. We didn’t score in the beginning but we pushed on.

“I’m really pleased with five games left,” Guardiola, whose side are glimpsing a Premier League-Champions League-FA Cup treble, said. “This was one of our games in hand and we used it well.

“We tried different combinations down the left and down the right. People kept losing the ball and being anxious and we had to lose that anxiety.

“We dropped a little tonight but we managed to create some chances. It’s another three points and we keep going.”

Manchester City looked a little leggy at times during a ninth successive league win and they must now re-group for Saturday’s home clash with Leeds United.

This is before the first leg game of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

Leeds United appointed the 68-year-old Sam Allardyce as interim manager on Wednesday after sacking Javi Gracia.

The much-travelled coach immediately made headlines by saying he was in the same league as Guardiola and Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp.

Asked for his thoughts on Allardyce’s claim, Guardiola was generous in his praise.

“He is right,” the Spaniard said. “It will be tough. He has the charisma and knows exactly what to do.”

Should Manchester City beat Leeds United, it will put them four points clear and within touching distance of a fifth title in six seasons.

EPL: West Ham dim Arsenal’s title hopes

West Ham rallied back from two goals down to draw Arsenal at the London stadium on Sunday afternoon in a pulsating English Premier League clash.

Gabriel Jesus was fed with a lofty pass from Partey and the Brazillian wasted no time to tap in Arsenal’s first of the afternoon.

Martin Odegaard scored to put the visitors 2-0 up inside 10 minutes of the encounter.

However, the Hammers plotted a comeback in the encounter with a penalty goal in  34th Minute. Arsenal’s defender, Gabriel Magalhães, clipped Pacqueta’s leg and the resultant penalty was converted by Saad Benrahma.

Arsenal had an opportunity to finish up the game but Bukayo Saka missed a penalty in the 54th minute to ensure the scoreline remained at 2-1.

Meanwhile, West Ham completed the comeback in the 55th minute when Jarrod Bowen lashed on to a loose ball in flight and volleyed it past goalie Ramsdale for the home team’s equalizer.

Arsenal are still top with a four point cushion, though they’ve played a game more than Manchester City and must still go to the Etihad in 10 days’ time.

Manchester city trail by 4 points but with a game in hand.

It’s a big point for West Ham who stay 15th but open some breathing room between themselves at the drop.

EPL: We’ll play to beat Arsenal – David Moyes

West Ham boss David Moyes insists they’ll test Arsenal on Sunday.

The Irons need a result to maintain distance from the bottom three.

Moyes said, “We will put out a team that will try and beat Arsenal. Last year, we challenged a lot of the so-called ‘big teams’ so we will try to give them a good game.

“They have got themselves in a great position [to possibly win the league.]

“They are very good. And they have a good record on the road. It makes it a difficult game but we have had a good couple of games against Arsenal over the past years and hopefully, we can do that again.

“I don’t think we have many memories from the Newcastle game. In the main, we have done very well at home and hopefully we can do that and show what we are about.”

FA Cup: Manchester United reach Quarter-Final after beating West Ham 3-1

Wonderkid, Alejandro Garnacho gave the Red Devils the inspiration needed to comeback from a goal down to defeat Westham United 3-1 in the FA Cup second round game on Wednesday.

With the win, Erik ten Hag’s men progressed to the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they will host Fulham.

Manchester United already got one silverware already after defeating Newcastle United in the 2023 Carabao cup last Sunday.

United looked set to be brought back down to earth with a bump after Said Benrahma put David Moyes’ West Ham into a deserved lead at Old Trafford.

But Nayef Aguerd’s 77th-minute own goal sparked an impressive turnaround, with teenager Garnacho’s superb 90th-minute effort followed by a stoppage-time strike by Fred in a 3-1 triumph. Their quarter-final will take place on the weekend of March 18 and 19.

There was a sense of relief among the delighted celebrations as Ten Hag’s men progressed from the fifth-round tie despite a shaky performance, keeping their hopes of a quadruple alive.

“I see today another step,” manager Ten Hag said of Garnacho. “I tell him before the game ‘it’s getting time you had an impact when you come on, but now you need to have impact as a starter’.

  • Son back to scoring form as Spurs beat West Ham

Son back to scoring form as Spurs beat West Ham

Son Heung-min returned to scoring form to help Tottenham claim a 2-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday, propelling them into the English Premier League’s top four.

With Antonio Conte back in Italy recovering from emergency gallbladder surgery earlier this month, stand-in head coach Cristian Stellini was again charged with leading Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Stellini made it two wins from two games in temporary charge as substitute Son sealed the points with his first league goal since Jan. 4.

This was after Emerson nosed Spurs ahead in the 56th minute.

West Ham’s defeat leaves them in the bottom three.

Spurs, who lost heavily to Leicester City last week and then went down to AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League, leapfrogged Newcastle United into fourth place.

There were warning signs for Spurs when Jarrod Bowen blasted wide in the opening minute, though a refereeing decision was the main talking point from a sluggish first half.

Eight days on from Tomas Soucek getting away with a similar incident against Chelsea, team-mate Thilo Kehrer was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty kick.

This was when Richarlison’s pass struck his outstretched arm.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Richarlison were denied by Lukasz Fabianski before Cristian Romero headed over, with Spurs keeping up the pressure after the restart when Harry Kane went close.

That pressure told before the hour —- Emerson coolly slotting into the bottom left corner after combining with fellow wing-back Ben Davies.

Bowen almost found an immediate response for West Ham but Fraser Forster was equal to his snapshot.

And West Ham’s hopes of a comeback were all but dashed when Son, who had lost his place in the starting team to Richarlison, finished calmly after linking up with Kane.

  • Rice worth more than Enzo Fernandez – Moyes

Rice worth more than Enzo Fernandez – Moyes

West Ham manager David Moyes can see captain Declan Rice commanding a British record transfer fee.

Chelsea signed Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £107m on Wednesday, making him the most expensive Premier League signing ever.

England midfielder Rice, 24, has played 224 times for the Hammers since his 2017 debut and now captains the club.

“Undoubtedly Declan is going to be a top player,” said Moyes.

“He’ll be a British transfer record if he ever leaves West Ham.”

Rice, who joined the Hammers youth set-up in 2014, only has 18 months left on his contract and has reportedly turned down new deals.

Asked after Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Newcastle if Rice’s departure was inevitable, Moyes said: “I hope it’s not. I hope he sees his time here.”

Argentina World Cup winner Fernandez, 22, had only made 29 appearances in Europe, having joined Benfica last summer from River Plate.

Rice has been a senior international since 2018, first with the Republic of Ireland and then England, while Fernandez only made his Argentina debut in September.

Moyes said: “There’s a lot of talk about it and when you see what’s going about for the prices, I think Dec will be blowing that out of the water, that’s for sure, when it comes around.”

  • Super Eagles striker, Terem Moffi to be signed by West Ham for £25 million

Super Eagles striker, Terem Moffi to be signed by West Ham for £25 million

West Ham is holding talks with Lorient over a deal to sign Super Eagles striker, Terem Moffi, for £ 25 million.

The deal is set to be £20m and an additional £5m for Moffi.

Terem Moffi is a Nigeria international, who has scored 12 goals in 18 games this season.

He arrived at the French club in 2020. The 23-year-old has racked up 59 goals in 135 games and helped them avoid a relegation scrap last season.

With the Hammers currently 18th in the Premier League table after a poor run of form, bringing in a fresh striker with experience could help them avoid the drop.

Moffi left Nigeria and moved to England to join the Buckswood Football Academy in Hastings at the age of 17. He then took his talents to Lithuania where he played for Kauno Zalgiris and Riteriai.

Moffi later had a short spell at Belgian side Kortrijk before joining Lorient in October 2020.

  • EPL: Everton coach, Lampard expresses optimism over West Ham clash

EPL: Everton coach, Lampard expresses optimism over West Ham clash

Everton manager Frank Lampard has expressed optimism the toffees will do well against West Ham in their next  English Premier League (EPL) next weekend.

Recall that Southampton defeated Everton 2-1 on Saturday at the Goodison Park.

The Merseyside club lost a fourth successive home league game in a row as they let a first-half lead slip.

The defeat brought Lampard’s future into sharper focus after he had received the backing of club owner Farhad Moshiri earlier in the week.

The defeat came against the backdrop of pre-planned fan protests inside Goodison Park at the end of the game.

Supporters have been calling for the club’s board to be sacked, with Everton fighting relegation for the second successive season.

Amadou Onana gave the home side a first half lead but James Ward-Prowse equalised after the break.

He then curled in a free-kick to give Saints their first victory at Everton since 1997.

“It’s obviously difficult and disappointing, especially when you go 1-0 up,” Lampard said.

“It’s a tough game, there’s a lot of tension for both teams. We deserved to be (ahead) in the first half with the passion in our game.

“It wasn’t a tactical game, it was more of a fighting game. We showed spirit and then an early goal (for Southampton) in the second half changes the tone.

“We hit the bar but then, typically at the moment, we concede a free-kick and it goes in our net. Obviously, it’s disappointing. It was a big game for us and we lost.”

The Everton board was advised not to attend the game due to security fears, but Lampard said the off-field troubles had no impact on the result.

“It’s a difficult period. There is so much passion at this club for the right reasons, everyone wants the best for the club.

“We’ve come in a direction where we were in a relegation battle last year and again this year.”

Lampard admits next Saturday’s trip to West Ham, who are also in the bottom three and level on 15 points with the Toffees, is another huge game for the club.

“The only thing that is important is the reaction,” he said. “The effort of the players, the desire of the players (against Southampton) was big.

“But, in terms of the performance, when the game changes in the second half, we know that’s not enough and I’ll be the first to take responsibility for that.

  • How Arsenal from 1-0 down took 3 points against West Ham

How Arsenal from 1-0 down took 3 points against West Ham

Arsenal on Boxing Day put their title credentials on display, netting thrice in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit and take all three points against West Ham.

Said Benrahma’s opener from the spot after 27 minutes stood as the only goal for another half-hour, when Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka combined to drag the Gunners back level.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Gabriel Martinelli would capitalise on the momentum and dispatch a near-post finish past Lukasz Fabianski just five minutes later, to give Mikel Arteta’s side a first lead of the day.

The defence would hold resolutely from there, preventing Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen from combining as effectively as they did in the first period to prevent David Moyes from snatching his first ever win at Emirates Stadium.

Eddie Nketiah would add the cherry on top with a lovely finish after rolling his defender to give Arsenal a well-deserved third goal that put the result beyond doubt. The three points put Arsenal seven clear of second-place Newcastle, while West Ham stay 16th.

Arsenal are in action again on December 31, when they travel to play Brighton and Hove Albion. West Ham return home on December 30 to host Brentford.

Whatever happens, Arsenal will end 2022 top of the Premier League.
