Arteta explains relationship with David Moyes

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he’s close to West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Arteta played under Moyes for six years during his time at Everton, who signed him from Real Sociedad in 2005 when the Spaniard was just 22. They enjoyed immediate success together, with Arteta’s arrival playing an important role in the Toffees’ top-four finish in 2004/05 as they reached the Champions League qualifiers.

He would go on to play over 200 times for Moyes, and admits he learnt plenty from the Scottish boss in that time that helped shape his managerial philosophy, and was happy to pay tribute to his former boss before they meet again on Boxing Day.

“He was extremely supportive all the time and everything we did together, and I have incredible memories with him because we had a very successful time together,” Arteta said.

“I’m so grateful first off for the trust he always showed in me. For how much I learned of him on the field, off the field, about building a team, about getting the right characters in the team to build what you want.

“I know for sure he has been working the team really, really hard since he took over.

“He absolutely maximized the potential of that team, and took that team to a different level.

“I’m sure they have been working really hard like we all have been in this period, and it will be a very difficult contest.”

Ten Hag sends Man Utd board Dalot message

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag waxed lyrical regarding right-back Diogo Dalot after their win over West Ham United.

The Red Devils claimed a vital Premier League win, achieving a 1-0 success over the Hammers at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Dalot was outstanding for United, attacking and defending in equal measure, despite playing nearly every game so far this term.

“I’m really happy with the development of Diogo,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.

    “He’s done really well.

“As you [Gary Neville] mentioned, you played in that position yourself, so you can be critical because you know how to play there, but I think his defending positions are growing from game to game. His timing, also his duels, is better from game to game.

“In possession, I think he’s really good and he has the breath to go up and down [the wing]. The development is really good, but I have to mention that a club like Manchester United needs two good fullbacks, because we have a lot of games to cover.”

I hope Wenger will return to Arsenal – Declan Rice

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice hopes former French manager, Arsene Wenger can eventually return to Arsenal.

Rice was speaking in a documentary on the former Gunners manager.

He said, “I spoke to (Jack) Wilshere and he only said that he was an incredible manager.

“The football he made him play was so pure and he loved every single second of it.

“I hope he can return to Arsenal in some role because he is truly a high-level man.”

Wenger is currently technical director with FIFA.

Premier League: Haaland scores twice as Man City beat West Ham

Erling Haaland has scored twice on his Premier League debut for Manchester City in a routine 2-0 win away to West Ham United.
After a decent start from the Hammers, the reigning Premier League champions dominated and hardly put a foot wrong with their passing in the first half.
A key moment was goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who had started the game well, being forced off with an injury around the half-hour mark to be replaced by Alphonse Areola.
And it was Areola who conceded a penalty on 36 minutes after clumsily bringing down Haaland. The Norwegian picked himself up to dispatch the spot-kick coolly into the bottom corner to open his account for City.
David Moyes, whose starting XI had contained none of his summer signings, did bring on new Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca around the hour mark with his side looking to punish some uncharacteristically sloppy passing from the visitors.
And the Hammers did improve but Haaland killed the game off with a well-taken low finish after running onto Kevin De Bruyne’s through-ball to make it a debut to remember.

EPL: Late Pulisic strike boosts Chelsea’s top-four hopes

Christian Pulisic’s 90th-minute winner helped save team-mate Jorginho’s blushes as Chelsea boosted their top-four hopes with a late win over an understrength West Ham.

David Moyes rested six players before their Europa League semi-final on Thursday and it looked like they might hold for a precious point when Jorginho’s woeful effort from the spot was saved by Lukasz Fabianski after 87 minutes.

But after Craig Dawson was sent off after a video assistant review (VAR) for fouling Romelu Lukaku in the build-up to the penalty, Pulisic turned the saviour as he tucked in Marcos Alonso’s low cross.

It sent Stamford Bridge into raptures after a frustrating afternoon that looked set to continue manager Thomas Tuchel’s poor form at home, with his side having lost their last three games.

But the victory sparked relief for him and his players as they recovered from their midweek defeat by Arsenal to move five points clear of the fourth-placed Gunners.

West Ham will be distraught they did not get anything from the game after a sterling display, with Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio all starting on the bench.

Dawson, who was otherwise excellent with a number of blocks, will also feel aggrieved as West Ham remain seventh, eight points behind Arsenal.

  • Europa League draw: FC Barcelona to face Eintracht Frankfurt in quarter-finals [FULL FIXTURES]

Europa League draw: FC Barcelona to face Eintracht Frankfurt in quarter-finals [FULL FIXTURES]

FC Barcelona were on Friday drawn to play Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2021/2022 Europa League quarter-finals as they continue their bid to win Europe’s second-tier event for the first time.

Barca have five titles in the UEFA Champions Cup/League and four from the defunct Cup Winners’ Cup, but have never won the UEFA Cup/Europa League.

Eintracht Frankfurt meanwhile won the UEFA Cup in 1980 and were semi-finalists in 2019.

The winners of the April 7 and April 14 tie will face the winners of West Ham versus Olympique Lyon fixture in the semi-finals set for April 28 and May 5.

England-based West Ham had ousted record winners Sevilla.

Italy’s Atalanta face German opposition again in RB Leipzig after knocking out Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16.

RB Leipzig had a bye after their opponents Spartak Moscow were suspended as part of sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

The winners of that tie will face Braga or Rangers who contest the remaining quarter-final.

The final is scheduled for May 18 in Seville.

Barca to face Galatasaray, Sevilla play West Ham in Europa League [Full draw]

FC Barcelona will face Galatasaray in the 2021/2022 Europa League round of 16 while Sevilla will take on West Ham United following Friday’s draw in Nyon.

Spartak Moscow, the only Russian club left in the competition, have been drawn against RB Leipzig.

Spartak will however be unable to play their home game in their country and will have to find a neutral venue.

This was after a decision taken by UEFA’s Executive Committee on Friday following Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

FC Barcelona, who have never won the competition, are looking to become the third consecutive Spanish side to lift the title after Sevilla and Villarreal.

FC Barcelona failed to make it past the UEFA Champions League group stages for the first time in 22 years and are taking part in their first Europa League competition since 2004.

Xavi Hernandez’s side reached the round of 16 after a convincing 4-2 win (5-3 on aggregate) at Napoli on Thursday.

FC Barcelona will play the opener at home and then travel to Turkey for the return leg.

Record six-time Europa League winners Sevilla will take on West Ham, a team they have never faced and are presently sixth in the English Premier League.

They have an added motivation to go all the way in the competition with the final being staged on May 18 at their Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

In spite of Thursday’s 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb, Sevilla progressed 3-2 on aggregate.

“We were drawn with perhaps the most difficult [rival] of all,” Sevilla’s sporting director Monchi said.

“A very well-built team, that is having a great season in the Premier League. They have players of a high level, both technical and physical.

“We haven’t been very lucky, but we must assume that draws are like that and look forward with optimism. I don’t think they will be too happy either.

“It’s a good tie, worthy of the importance of the competition.

“It will be a beautiful experience, because England is the cradle of the game of football and this tie will allow us to measure our ability to overcome challenges.”

The other Spanish side left in the competition, Real Betis, square off against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Real Betis knocked Sevilla out of the Copa del Rey last month.

They eliminated Russian Premier League champions Zenit 3-2 on aggregate.

Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers, who saw off Borussia Dortmund and their Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland on Thursday, are back in the round of 16 for a third straight season.

They take on Red Star Belgrade.

Bayer Leverkusen, third in the Bundesliga, have a tricky round of 16 tie against Italian outfit Atalanta.

Meanwhile, in the Europa Conference League, Leicester City have been drawn against Stade Rennais.

The English Premier League side reached the round of 16 after eliminating Danish side Randers 7-2 on aggregate.

AS Roma, who are eighth in Serie A, will take on Dutch side Vitesse.

The round of 16 first leg matches will be played on March 10, except for FC Porto and Real Betis who will play at home a day earlier, while the return matches will be taking place on March 17.

    Europa League round of 16

EPL: Newcastle unbeaten run continues after West Ham draw

Newcastle continued their impressive resurgence under Eddie Howe with a valuable draw at West Ham that edged them five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Howe’s side are unbeaten in the league since Christmas, despite this result bringing their recent three-game winning run to an end.

Craig Dawson headed the opener for West Ham from Aaron Cresswell’s enticing free-kick after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had earlier tipped a Jarrod Bowen effort onto the crossbar.

But the visitors capitalised on a defensive lapse on the brink of half-time when Joe Willock guided a deft finish onto the far post and watched it creep narrowly over the line.

Newcastle remain 17th but are now five points clear of Norwich, while West Ham missed the chance to return to a Champions League place and stay fifth.

EPL: Chelsea dumping left me embarrassed – Declan Rice

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice admits being dumped by Chelsea left him embarrassed.

Rice was released by his boyhood club Chelsea aged 14 after struggling with the ‘physical aspect’ of football.

He recalled to Sky Sports: “Obviously, I was released at 14 by Chelsea, something that I didn’t expect at all.

“It was all I ever knew as a kid, you know, it’s my whole life, going there, training with the mates I’d met.

“And honestly, I felt like that was it – I was gutted, my dad coming home telling me after school.

“Other clubs find out before you get released about whether you’re going to be released or not, and that night I actually went and trained with Fulham.

“I trained with Fulham on Wednesday that night, and on Thursday I was at West Ham.”

On the embarrassment of being released, he said: “Yeah, definitely.

“I think the embarrassment of it you know, how did you tell your friends that you’ve been released by Chelsea.

“That was a tough one. Also shock, obviously, upset, so I thought where I’m going to go, what I’m going to do from here?

“I still don’t know the exact reason [why Chelsea released me] – I wish I did.

“I think it was probably down to the fact that when I was a kid I was actually tiny.

“I was going for a massive growth spurt at the time – my body wasn’t all connected together, my running pattern was really weird.

“Technical ability was fine, but in terms of the physical aspect of it, I was struggling.”
