West Ham can produce something special after Chelsea win – Coufal

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal says they’re capable of producing “something special” after victory over Chelsea.

The Hammers won 3-2 on Saturday.

“Are we capable of something special? Yes,” Coufal told the London Evening Standard. “We beat United, then City [on penalties in the Carabao Cup] at this stadium and also Liverpool so it could be a wonderful season for us.

“It is a special season. We’re in the Europa League after I don’t know how many years. We will be there in the next half of the season because we got first in the group and we want to be as high as possible in the Premier League.

“It is just about hard work in the sessions and to be confident on the pitch.

“Of course we want to be as high as possible in the table but we are still not on this level like Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City.

“We are trying to get on this level. Sometimes we play good against these teams sometimes we play bad but we are in a process. Sometimes we are able to deliver this beautiful result.”

  • We can’t allow West Ham to win like that – Thiago Silva

We can’t allow West Ham to win like that – Thiago Silva

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva says they must not dwell on defeat at West Ham.

The veteran was on the scoresheet in the 3-2 loss.

“Normally it would have been a draw,” said Thiago Silva to the club’s website.

“It’s not like West Ham created lots of opportunities, we gave them two goals. We have to take more care because that’s two or three matches now where we have given the opposition a goal.

“But we played okay, we kept the ball well and tried to control the match. The first and third goals were a bit unlikely, a bit difficult to explain. I don’t think the third was a shot, he was trying to cross the ball and it went in the goal.

“It’s the first time this season we have conceded three goals in the same match.

“We played much better than we did in the game before [at Watford], but a team on our level can’t allow them to win a match like that, one we had under control. It’s difficult to take this defeat but we must keep our heads up.”

On conceding three goals, he continued: “It’s not only physically difficult this league, it’s mentally difficult. There are a lot of matches at the moment, a lot of injuries, not just for Chelsea, and it’s the most intense league in Europe.

“You have to make changes, and you can pay a little bit for that, but it’s not an individual sport, it’s a collective one. We must keep our head up and get ready for the next match that’s coming, because we can’t change what’s happened, but we can change the future.”

West Ham stun Chelsea in 3-2 defeat

Arthur Masuaku scored a bizarre late winner as top-four hopefuls West Ham twice came from behind to beat Premier League leaders Chelsea in a pulsating encounter at London Stadium.

After collecting the ball wide on the left, Masuaku arrowed a cross-cum-shot past Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy at his near post to send the Hammers supporters into ecstasy.

Thiago Silva broke the deadlock for Chelsea in the first half, heading Mason Mount’s corner past Lukasz Fabianski via the inside of the post.

West Ham were gifted a chance to equalise when Edouard Mendy brought down Jarrod Bowen following a poor backpass from Jorginho, allowing Manuel Lanzini to stroke home from the penalty spot.

Bowen’s low drive from the edge of the area restored parity once more before Masuaku’s remarkable 87th-minute winner.

The win consolidates West Ham’s place in the top four, while Chelsea will drop to third if Manchester City and Liverpool win this weekend.

  • Why I sold Kurt Zouma to London rivals – Tuchel

Why I sold Kurt Zouma to London rivals – Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has explained selling Kurt Zouma to London rivals, West Ham.

Tuchel has explained the reasons behind allowing Zouma to leave for West Ham in the summer – insisting he wanted the defender to stay and fight for his place.

“We replaced him with Trevoh (Chalobah) because we had the faith and trust in him. Until this moment, we could not allow him to go because of course we are selfish and have to see that we have a strong squad,” he said.

“But we have to see the situation of Kurt also and his point of view. He is a strong player, an experienced Premier League player. He suffered from the decision for us with (Cesar) Azpi in the back three, with Andreas (Christensen) in the back three, Toni (Rudiger) in the back three, as direct competitors to his place.

“So he did not get enough minutes for his status or his quality and where he wants to be in this time of his career.

“We had many talks about it in pre-season where we reflected on his position and our position. The more we got to know Trevoh we thought maybe if Kurt has a constant wish to go…

“For many, many weeks there was not an awful lot of interest in him. I made it clear, I love Kurt, I told him ‘I love you, we don’t have to have these talks. I am happy for you to stay even if Trevoh comes in.’

“I was happy for him to stay. He is a top-quality player and could have stayed to fight for his place. And you always have a chance to play, but it’s hard competition.

“He accepted it. Then very late this offer came from West Ham. So we had this talk and he decided this is an offer that might be the perfect for him.

“We took a bit of a risk to fully trust Trevoh because we did not know at the moment if he could reach the consistent levels and I think we got rewarded.”

  • EPL: We’re excited facing Chelsea today – Moyes

EPL: We’re excited facing Chelsea today – Moyes

West Ham boss David Moyes is excited facing Chelsea today.

The Hammers host the Premier League leaders for the early kickoff today.

Moyes said, “We are playing the Champions League winners. Last week we played the Champions League finalists as well. I said a few weeks ago, I really want us to play the best teams and see how we do and see where we are at, it is the only way to find out.

“I said at the start: ‘Can we challenge them?’ ‘How well can we do against them?’ So we’ll try and do that against Chelsea.

“We know it will be a big test.

“Everybody playing against Chelsea is finding how difficult it is. We have seen the quality in Europe against Juventus as well so it’s very hard to find any weaknesses in their team, they’ve got a really strong squad as everybody’s aware. So it will be difficult. I’ve got to say it’s a tough, tough game and I’ve got to say the manager has done a really good job since he’s come in. He has won trophies and he’s been successful, which at Chelsea is the requirement. You have to come in and compete at the top.

“But it’s a game we played quite well in this game in recent seasons, we had a great win when we were trying to stay up when Yarmolenko scores the winner late on in one of the games I will always remember.

“The three points were vital. We needed to beat a team near the top and I think last year we played quite well, we got unlucky that we didn’t get something out of those games. But let’s not kid ourselves, Chelsea are a top team and a team in form as well.”

  • EPL: We’re all behind Ogbonna – West Ham defender

EPL: We’re all behind Ogbonna – West Ham defender

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma says the players are right behind Angelo Ogbonna after he was ruled out for the season.

Ogbonna has just undergone knee surgery.

“We are all behind him, we all love him,” Zouma said. “He’s an important player for the Club and the team and obviously we want him to come back as quick as possible.”

On defeat to Wolves, the Frenchman said: “There are days like this – we started the game well, but after the first 20 minutes I would say we were a bit short everywhere on the pitch.

“We couldn’t press well, they had the ball and made us run a bit more than usual and we conceded the goal in the second half.

“It didn’t happen at Wolves and it was a bad day, but we have many, many, many more games coming to change it up.

“Hopefully we’ll get a win at Rapid Vienna on Thursday and get a reaction from Saturday. We have time to recover and prepare for the game, so hopefully we go there and win.

“We are all top players here and we have a great squad. We have to keep on working hard and we won’t win every game, but we want to win the majority of them.”

  • EPL: How West Ham defeated Liverpool – Antonio

EPL: How West Ham defeated Liverpool – Antonio

West Ham striker Michail Antonio has lifted the lid on how they defeated Liverpool on Sunday.

Antonio twisted the knife into irate Jurgen Klopp by insisting West Ham knew EXACTLY how to beat Liverpool – after Reds boss let rip at match officials.

The Hammers scored a controversial opener as Liverpool keeper Alisson flapped a corner into his own net under pressure from Angelo Ogbonna.

Alisson was also at fault for the other two goals Liverpool conceded, with Antonio claiming it was thanks to their plan to ‘keep it away from Virgil van Dijk’.

And Antonio claimed the Hammers had targeted Alisson, revealing: “The whole plan was stick it in straight on the keeper and we’ll challenge.

“We saw they struggle with the ball coming in — all we had to do is keep it away from Virgil van Dijk.”

Klopp slams referees as West Ham move third in EPL

West Ham United leapfrogged Liverpool into third place on the Premier League table with a 3-2 win over Jurgen Klopp’s side at London Stadium on Sunday.

The Reds went behind after just four minutes when Alisson flapped at Pablo Fornals’ corner amidst pressure from Angelo Ogbonna and failed to stop the ball from entering his own goal.

In what was a scrappy first-half, West Ham were lucky not to be undermanned when Aaron Cresswell caught Jordan Henderson with a nasty tackle. Conversely, Diogo Jota escaped punishment for an elbow on Ogbonna.

Liverpool were back level before half-time thanks to a sumptuous free kick from just outside the box from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

David Moyes’ clearly instructed his side to make corners difficult for Liverpool’s Brazilian goalkeeper and they almost went ahead shortly after half-time when Craig Dawson headed off the bar.

But the Hammers regained the lead midway through the first-half when Fornals was slipped through on goal and Alisson was unable to keep out his shot.

Kurt Zouma put Moyes and London Stadium into delirium when he was left unmarked to header home a corner at the back post.

Substitute Divock Origi came off the bench to fire in an excellent goal to give Liverpool a chance.

Klopp’s side should have had at least a point after Sadio Mane missed a free diving header from six yards out.

Speaking after the game, Klopp was livid with Ogbonna’s slight contact with Alisson for the first goal and Cresswell’s tackle on Henderson.

“The first goal is a foul on the goalie,” he told Sky Sports. “The arm goes against Alisson’s arm so how can he catch the ball when someone pulls his arm away. It makes no sense. It’s the typical excuse that VAR says it’s not clear and obvious but then what do you need?

“What can [Alisson] do? That’s why the goalie is protected in moments. If a player goes up with his arm for a goalie that’s an important position of the body and if that’s in the way how can he make a save?

“People will say I’m looking for excuses, I’m not. I accept we’re not too good to lose football games. Today we lost it, that’s not nice but I accept it. But when we speak about situations in a game you just need normal decisions from a referee. He didn’t do that.

“Cresswell? For me it’s a reckless challenge. Even though he touches the ball, you can’t go in like that as anything can happen. You can say he touched the ball but you have to control your body.

“Those two situations were influential in the game but in the end West Ham fought for the three points. They are not responsible for the decisions the VAR made.

He added in the post-match press conference: “It’s a clear foul on Alisson, how can it not be? The arm from Ogbonna is there. I don’t know who is VAR today.

“The ref made it easy for himself, and said let’s see what the VAR said, they said it’s not clear and obvious. It was really strange.”

West Ham knock Man City out of Carabao Cup

Holders Manchester City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after West Ham United won 5-3 on penalties in front of an ecstatic London Stadium.

Pep Guardiola has made the competition his own by claiming the past four Carabao Cups.

But City will not be the winners since 2016 thanks to West Ham’s penalty heroics.

Phil Foden fired wide to give the Hammers the advantage in the shootout.

Said Benrahma then stepped up to score the decisive penalty.

Despite peppering West Ham’s goal with 25 shots, Guardiola’s side are now out of the Carabao Cup.

West Ham United moved closer to the Europa League knockout stage as goals from Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Jarrod Bowen secured a 3-0 home win over Belgium’s Genk on Thursday night.

The result meant the English Premier League side continued their perfect start in Group H.

West Ham top the standings on nine points ahead of Dinamo Zagreb, Rapid Vienna and Genk who have three each, after the London side kept a third successive clean sheet in Europe’s second-tier competition.
