How German players taught me about humility – West Ham coach

West Ham coach Stuart Pearce says Germany’s players taught him about humility after he missed a penalty in their famous World Cup semifinal shootout defeat in 1990.

The England icon was in tears after his spot kick was saved during England’s shoot out defeat in the semi final of Italia 90.

Called to do a drugs test after the game, the defender said the unnamed Germans, who had been celebrating moments earlier, simply sat silently and respectfully.

Stuart, now 59, said their refusal to celebrate during his despair made him a better person.

Speaking on the Running on Emotion podcast, he said: “We sat there in total silence, I sat there with my head bowed, they did as well. They did not say a word to each other.

“I didn’t realise at the time, because you’re hurting so much.

“And it sent a great lesson out to me, after the event, of how humble they were.”

Jesse Lingard pushes Man Utd for permanent exit

Jesse Lingard will push for an exit from Manchester United this summer.

The 28-year-old looks completely reinvigorated since he joined West Ham United in January.

In 11 appearances for the Hammers, Lingard has scored nine goals and provided four assists.

United are still undecided on what to do with their academy graduate.

The same can’t be said about Lingard, with Eurosport reporting the England international thinks his time at Old Trafford is over.

West Ham are frontrunners to sign Lingard and want United to accelerate talks over a permanent deal.

They are waiting patiently to hear from the Red Devils about the potential costs.

EPL: Newcastle stun West Ham in 5-goal thriller

Newcastle took a big step towards securing their Premier League status with a dramatic win against 10-man West Ham.

Issa Diop’s own goal and a Joelinton tap-in had put the hosts in a commanding position at the break.

However, West Ham, who had Craig Dawson sent off for two first-half bookings, drew level from a Diop header and a Jesse Lingard penalty that was awarded after a VAR review.

But with the visitors seemingly on top, Newcastle had the final say, substitute Joe Willock heading an important winning goal that lifts Steve Bruce’s side up to 15th in the table, with a nine-point cushion to the bottom three.

West Ham remain fourth but have now played a game more than fellow Champions League hopefuls Chelsea and Liverpool, who will have the opportunity to leapfrog the Hammers before they play again.

We need to end these fight-backs – David Moyes

West Ham United manager David Moyes admits he was putting on a ‘stick-on smile’ after the 3-2 win over Leicester City on Sunday.

The Hammers almost blew a 3-0 lead against Leicester, as they did against Arsenal recently.

And Moyes acknowledged he must fix the worrying pattern as West Ham look to secure fourth-place on the table.

“I’m not smiling,” Moyes said after the game. “This one is a stick-on smile today. This is a smile of anger because we nearly threw away another big three points for us and we don’t want to do that.

“We were 3-0 up against Arsenal and 3-0 up against Wolves and 3-0 up against Leicester and they’re incredible results, but they don’t sound that incredible when it goes 3-3, 3-2, 3-2.

“I’ve got to try and put an end to that. I can’t allow that to happen and we’ve got to be better.”

Wolves among best goals I’ve scored – Jesse Lingard

West Ham midfielder Jesse Lingard is proud of last Monday’s goal in victory at Wolves.

On Monday, he was at his best yet again to lead West Ham to a 3-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he scored a sensational individual goal before playing his part in the second for Pablo Fornals with an audacious piece of skill, then laying on the third for Jarrod Bowen with a perfectly weighted pass.

“We’re in really good spirits at the moment – the whole team is, to be honest,” he told the club’s website. “It was a good victory and obviously we’re in the top four and we want to maintain that position now.

“It’s up with the best goals I’ve ever scored. It’s similar to a goal I scored against Watford for Manchester United, but I’d say it’s definitely up there.

“With the spin for Pablo’s goal, it was just using my initiative because the ball was going out of play and I just had to get their as quickly as I could, and by the time I got there I knew the defender was there, so I knew I had to spin immediately.

“We’re playing with confidence and winning games and when you’re doing that, things like that will come, and thankfully it came to me.”

Jesse Lingard sets conditions for Man Utd return

Manchester United loanee Jesse Lingard is willing to return to the club next season, provided he gets more game time.

Lingard was on the fringes at United for nearly a year, before a loan move to West Ham United in January.

The 28-year-old is now showing his best form, having scored 5 and assisted 2 times in 7 Premier League games for the Hammers.

And according to ESPN, Lingard is not ready to go back to United no matter what, as he would prefer to spend next season at a club where he plays regularly.

Lingard, who will have a year left on his deal in the summer, wants assurances from United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he will play more often.

EPL: Why I chose West Ham – Lingard

West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard admits he could have left Manchester United for abroad in January.

In just seven appearances for his new club, Lingard has scored five goals, assisted three more and won two penalties, helping to maintain the Hammers’ unexpected push for Champions League football.

He revealed he had offers to join clubs in France and Spain during the transfer window but was advised to remain in the Premier League by England boss Gareth Southgate.

“It was about going out to Europe or staying in the Premier League and he said, ‘If I was you I would stay in the Premier League’,” Lingard told the London Evening Standard.

“So after that I had to find a Premier League side and obviously West Ham fit perfectly.

“I didn’t speak to him after the loan, it was just about me working hard for West Ham and trying to get the call-up.”

EPL: City beat West Ham to secure 20th straight win

Manchester City extended their winning run to 20 matches and moved 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League as John Stones’ second-half strike was enough to seal victory over a resilient West Ham United.

Stones fired home his fourth goal of the season from Riyad Mahrez’s neat lay-off to keep Pep Guardiola’s side in control of the title race.

Fourth-placed West Ham gave City a decent game at Etihad Stadium and fought back to level through Michail Antonio before the break, after Stones’ central-defensive partner Ruben Dias had put the hosts in front.

But Guardiola, likened to celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal by Hammers counterpart David Moyes before Saturday’s fixture, once again came up with the right ingredients as his side improved following the second-half introductions of Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden.

City’s unbeaten record now stretches to 27 games and they will equal their longest run without defeat if they do not lose against Wolves on Tuesday.

This came after he won his appeal against a red card he picked up against Fulham at the weekend.

Soucek was sent off in time added on for an incident involving Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, after VAR requested the referee look at it on the video screen.

The red card was overturned by an independent regulatory commission.
