Lampard admits ‘tension’ at Chelsea before West Ham win

Frank Lampard admits there was ‘tension’ at Chelsea heading into Monday’s clash with West Ham United.

The Blues entered the match with two consecutive losses to Wolves and Everton.

And Lampard was delighted after his players responded with a 3-0 win over the Hammers.

“This season is looking different to every other season,” he said. “It is hard at a club with expectations that we have and the squad we have.

“If you are winning, or are unbeaten for a long time, then things move swimmingly well. It is much easier to manage, and you get a few challenges when you lose a couple of games.

“It is hard; I have to be the one that drives it. There was a bit of tension going into the game, in a good way. The players were like that and you have to fight through it.

“When you come off it slightly, there is no easy way back other than a bit of graft. We showed that tonight without being beautiful.

“It will help confidence. As a squad, I thought it would be tough for us as we have to grow a bit of character in games.

“We suffered at Wolves, we should have dealt with that game, and today we dealt with a game that was potentially very tough.”

Chelsea close in on top four with win over West Ham

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham scored a late opportunistic double to secure a 3-0 home win for Chelsea over West Ham United in the English Premier League (EPL) on Monday.

This was after Brazilian defender Thiago Silva had fired them in front with an early header.

The result lifted Chelsea to fifth on 25 points from 14 games, a point behind fourth-placed Everton, while West Ham stayed 10th on 21 points after failing to rack up a third successive away win.

It was a welcome victory for Chelsea, after two successive defeats, and Abraham acknowledged there was a rallying cry in the dressing room before the kick off.

“The boys said we needed a performance and that’s what we did today,” the 23-year-old told Sky Sports.

“As a striker, scoring goals gives you confidence, my team mates created a lot of chances and we defended well as a team.

“It’s something you do in the park, get in the right areas and be ready when the ball lands. It’s still early days to be looking at the table, we have to just keep picking up three points.”

West Ham’s Declan Rice had a goal disallowed for offside before 36-year-old centre back Thiago Silva planted a thumping header past visiting goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in the 10th minute as he met a Mason Mount corner.

The Hammers twice came close as Aaron Cresswell shot across the face of goal and Chelsea centre back Kurt Zouma cleared a dangerous raid before Fabianski denied Timo Werner at the other end in the closing stages of the first half.

But Abraham settled Chelsea’s nerves when he made it 2-0 in the 78th minute after Werner’s scuffed shot from the edge of the penalty area fell kindly for the England forward, who diverted it into the net with the slightest of touches.

With West Ham reeling, Abraham added the third two minutes later when he side-footed in a rebound from a tight angle after Christian Pulisic’s close-range header was parried by Fabianski.

Misfiring Germany international Werner missed a chance to make it 4-0 in the dying minutes when he rattled the crossbar from close range after a fine run and assist by N’Golo Kante.

Set-piece goals fire West Ham to 2-1 comeback win over Leeds

Two headed goals from set pieces helped West Ham United to beat Leeds United 2-1 in their English Premier League clash at Elland Road on Friday.

Goals from midfielder Tomas Soucek and defender Angelo Ogbonna ensured that West Ham fought from a goal down to defeat the hosts.

West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski conceded a penalty in the second minute, when he brought down Patrick Bamford and seemed to have redeemed himself by saving Mateusz Klich’s spot kick.

However, a retake was ordered due to Fabianski leaving his line and Klich scored at the second attempt.

Soucek put West Ham level in the 25th minute, out-muscling defender Stuart Dallas to head the ball into the net.

The visitors took the lead thanks to Ogbonna’s far-post header from an Aaron Cresswell free kick ten minutes from time.

Now level with Chelsea as the league’s best scorers from set pieces with eight goals, the win lifts the Hammers to fifth spot in the standings with 20 points after 12 games.

Leeds remain in 14th place on 14 points.

  • Antonio goal helps West Ham hold Man City

Antonio goal helps West Ham hold Man City

Michail Antonio scored a wonderful goal to earn his side a hard-earned point against Manchester City, who have now won once in four Premier League games.

Antonio’s spectacular acrobatic overhead volley from Vladimir Coufal’s cross put the Hammers ahead at London Stadium – and provided another twist in this unpredictable top-flight season.

But substitute Phil Foden equalised for City six minutes after coming on at the start of the second half, producing a really good turn to score following Joao Cancelo’s pass.

City dominated possession and sent on Kevin de Bruyne, who had missed the previous two games through injury, but could not find a winner and remain anchored in the bottom half of the table after five games.

In a setback for the visitors, Sergio Aguero did not appear for the start of the second half because of an injury.

Having lost their opening two games, West Ham have taken eight points from their past four matches, and can add a well-earned point against City to impressive wins over Leicester and Wolves.

  • West Ham beat Leicester City 3-0

West Ham beat Leicester City 3-0

Leicester City recorded their first loss of the season on Sunday after slumping to a 3-0 defeat against West Ham.

West Ham who were well-organised and thoroughly deserved their victory, secured their win through goals from Antonio, Fornals and Bowen.

Leicester had plenty of possession but failed to get a single shot on target.

The win was West Ham’s second in a row, without conceding a goal as they now sit seventh in the Premier League table.

Leicester remain second on the league depending on the outcome of Liverpool match against Aston Villa later today.

Both Leicester and West Ham now head for the international break.

While Leicester have been brought back to earth after their strong start, West Ham can dream of a season that won’t end with them fighting relegation once again.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

  • Teams unwilling to sell to us our transfer targets, EPL club owner cries out

Teams unwilling to sell to us our transfer targets, EPL club owner cries out

West Ham United may not sign any more players before the transfer window shuts on Oct. 5, the English Premier League (EPL) club’s co-owner David Sullivan has said.

Sullivan said this was because the bids made for targets named by manager David Moyes have not been accepted.

West Ham have made only one first team signing in defensive midfielder Tomas Soucek.

Successive league defeats by Newcastle United and Arsenal have only stoked the fans’ anger towards the club’s hierarchy for the lack of incoming players.

It was reported that West Ham made an offer for Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski, but the London side failed to meet the asking price.

This was after offering 30 million pounds (38.18 million dollars).

“We have got a very unbalanced squad. We have now got the funds to buy a player or two, but unfortunately… the players the manager wants we cannot get..

“I am waiting for targets for the manager and we have got two or three bids in, but unfortunately the benchmark is very high and it’s very hard to get those players.

“We have a number of bids in for a number of players, but teams don’t want to lose them… key players at decent sized clubs, outside the UK… so whether we get any of these players I do not know,” Sullivan said.

A number of players have left West Ham, including winger Grady Diangana, whose sale to newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion was even criticised by club captain Mark Noble.

Sullivan added the club could be in financial trouble if spectators remain barred from stadiums to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

    “We have got limited fund.

“We have also got the fact we’ll probably get no gate money for the rest of the season and we’ve got to keep the club afloat and pay wages.

“We have chased dreams the last two years and bought a pile of players who haven’t impacted the club, and maybe they will over the coming seasons, because there are some damn good players,” he added.

  • EPL: Arsenal escape West Ham scare

EPL: Arsenal escape West Ham scare

A late goal from substitute Eddie Nketiah gave Arsenal a 2-1 home win over West Ham United in the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday.

Michail Antonio’s first half strike for the visitors had cancelled out Alexandre Lacazette’s 50th goal for the Gunners.

West Ham were more organised playing with a five-man defence than in their opening 2-0 home loss to Newcastle United as they faced an Arsenal side fresh from winning at Fulham.

But the hosts broke through in the 25th minute when captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, fresh from signing a new three-year deal, sprang onto a through ball down the left.

He then chipped across to Lacazette, who headed past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

West Ham levelled just before half-time with a brilliantly worked move from deep in their own half.

Tomas Soucek ran the ball through the middle and sent a pass wide to Ryan Fredericks who whipped it into the path of Antonio to net from close range.

Antonio nearly doubled his tally with another tap-in shortly after the restart, but Arsenal’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno got down at his feet to smother the ball right on the goalline.

Instead, Nketiah claimed all three points for the hosts.

He latched onto a Dani Ceballos layoff in the 85th minute, having come on less than 10 minutes before then to replace Lacazette.

Nketiah’s late goal sees Arsenal defeat West Ham

Arsenal scraped a 2-1 win over London neighbours West Ham in a close and fierce contest on Saturday.

The match almost ended in a draw until substitute Eddie Nketiah managed to pull in the winner in the 85th minute.

Arsenal began the match brilliantly with Alexandre Lacazette giving the gunners the lead in the first half.

West Ham, few seconds to half time break returned the goal.

Michael Antonio equalized for the hammers from close range after a counter-attack.

However, Nketiah’s goal towards the end of the match saw the hosts win the match narrowly.

Arsenal currently are number 2 on the Premier League table after winning their opening two matches of the season.

EPL: Norwich relegated as Antonio scores four for Hammers

Norwich City became the first club to be relegated from the Premier League this season as Michail Antonio scored all four goals to ease West Ham’s troubles near the bottom of the table.

A seventh successive league defeat left Daniel Farke’s side anchored at the foot of the table, 13 points from safety with only three games to play.

Having struggled to adapt since winning the Championship last season, Norwich’s third relegation in seven seasons was sealed by Antonio’s superb performance in front of goal.

The forward volleyed the first from inside the six-yard area after Issa Diop’s flick from a corner before using his head to guide Mark Noble’s free-kick beyond Tim Krul.

Hammers skipper Noble also provided the ball over the top for Antonio’s hat-trick. Krul saved his initial shot but it fell invitingly for the West Ham player to head over the line. His fourth was a tap-in from Ryan Fredericks’ pass.

West Ham’s first Premier League away win under David Moyes lifts them six points above the relegation zone, with two of their remaining three matches at home to fellow strugglers Watford and Aston Villa.

Norwich’s dreadful form since the Premier League resumed after being suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic meant it was a matter of when – not if – they would be relegated

Their 24th league defeat came after an abject performance, the Canaries failing to score for a league-high 17th game this season.

Argentine midfielder Emiliano Buendia tested Lukasz Fabianski while Teemu Pukki, who has not scored since netting his 11th league goal of the season on 22 January, headed a good chance wide.

  • EPL: Chelsea interested in signing Rice

Premier League side Chelsea are interested in signing Declan Rice from West Ham, according to Sky Sports.

The Blues are keen to strengthen with a defensive midfielder if the transfer window goes ahead this summer and are admirers of the England international, whom they released as a youth.

Rice, 21, has been close friends with Chelsea’s attacking midfielder Mason Mount since their days together in the academy and the pair have more recently impressed together for the national side.

Mount was recently forced to apologise for playing football with Rice at a north London centre while he was supposed to be self-isolating, after team-mate Callum Hudson Odoi was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Former Republic of Ireland youth international Rice has been a consistent figure for West Ham and bagged two assists in 29 Premier League appearances before football was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He would not come cheap, with four years left on his West Ham contract and the option of a further year’s extension.
