The parents of Whitney Adeniran, a 12- year-old student of Chrisland  Schools, Lagos, who died on Feb. 9 during the schools’ inter-house sports, are set to give evidence at a coroner’s inquest.

The inter-house sports took place at the Agege Stadium, Lagos State.

The couple will testify on April 17 at the inquest taking place at Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The Coroner, Magistrate Olabisi Fajana, made the disclosure on Tuesday while ruling on an application filed by Chrisland  Schools.

In the application, the school seeks to get samples and materials to carry out an independent evaluation of the report of an  autopsy conducted on the student by Lagos State Government.

Recall the Lagos State Government had on Feb. 13 ordered a coroner’s inquest into the cause of the student’s death.

On March 2, the government announced that the report of an autopsy conducted on the student showed that she died as a result of Asphxia/electrocution.

On Monday (April 3), the school filed an application seeking  to have access to some items from the chief medical examiner of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)  or any relevant officer, to enable the school to consult an independent pathologist.

The items sought include the student’s  skin sample, slides from which the diagnosis of electrocution was made, and samples of urine, blood and other body fluids collected for the autopsy.

The school also applied to have access to samples of bone and muscle taken from the deceased.

It also applied to be given all photographs taken during the conduct of the authopsy, copies of all histology slides reported as part of the post mortem examination.

The school also requested to be given any other samples and documents made in course of the autopsy.

It equally sought to have access to results of all toxicology test conducted on the late student.

The Lagos State counsel, Mr Akin George, did not oppose the application.

The coroner had adjourned the case until Tuesday to rule on the application.

When the matter came up on Tuesday, the coroner granted the application.

She ordered that the chief medical examiner of LASUTH should supply all the  items to the applicant’s pathologist’s laboratory on the day of forensic consultation.

He ordered that the consultation should be under the supervision of the chief medical examiner of LASUTH or a relevant officer.

Others to be present at the consultation include the parents of the deceased.

Chrisland: Students in terminal classes can resume – Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has granted permission for students in terminal classes to access Chrisland High School, Opebi, Ikeja, for physical learning ahead of their examinations due to begin soon.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, made this known in a statement on Monday, signed by Mr Ganiu Lawal, Assistant Director, Public Affairs of the Ministry.

Recall that the Lagos State Ministry of Education, on Feb. 12, ordered the temporary closure of Chrisland School, Opebi-Ikeja, following the death of a student of the School, Whitney Adeniran, on Feb. 9.

Adeniran died during the school’s annual inter-house sports at Agege Stadium, Lagos.

The closure order, according to the ministry, affected only Chrisland High School, Ikeja, and not all the schools operated by the owners, pending the outcome of a full investigation into the unfortunate incident.

Adefisayo, in an update on the matter on Monday, explained the reason for the new decision to grant permission to some students to access the school in Ikeja.

“The temporary permission to allow the terminal classes comprising JSS3 and SS3 students access to the school is to enable them participate in their terminal examinations,” the commissioner is quoted as saying.

She, however, hinted that the school would remain closed until all necessary judicial processes superintended over by the State’s Ministry of Justice and other ongoing administrative inquests within the purview of the Office of Education Quality Assurance and other agencies were  completed.

The Commissioner said that the ministry, with support of the Lagos State Joint Task Force in charge of the implementation of the child protection policy and safeguarding, would continue to engage with Whitney Adeniran’s family on the case.

According to her, the group is made up of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, such as the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Office of Education Quality Assurance and others.

Adefisayo also disclosed in the statement that arrangements were ongoing for other categories of students to return to school.

Recall that the Office of the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice had said that a Post Mortem report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, in respect of Whitney’s death, revealed the cause to be Asphyxia and electrocution.

The state ministry of justice has indicated its intention to charge the school, some members of Staff and one of the Vendors with negligence, among others, over the incident, following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

“We are remorseful and sorry about the death of Whitney” -Chrisland School finally tenders apology

The management of Chrisland schools has finally tendered an apology over the death of one of its students, Whitney Adeniran.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Whitney, a student of Chrisland International High School, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos passed away during the school’s inter-house sports competition

According to the 12-year-old girl’s father, Dr. Michael Adeyemi Adeniran, the child passed away at Agege Stadium on Thursday, 9th February 2023.

In a now-deleted post, the school said they are remorseful and sorry about the death of Whitney to her parents, the community that hosts them and the nation at large. They also extended their apology to the Nigerian Mass Media if they have sent unbearably quiet signals to them.

Explaining why the school has been quiet about the death of Whiteny, the management said the student’s death was shocking and they decide to honour the privacy of her family to mourn her loss.

Chrisland School post reads: ‘WE ARE SORRY’.

“We are deeply saddened and sorry about Whitney’s death. We are remorseful and sorry to Whitney’s parents. We are sorry to our parents and the entire community that hosts our school. We are also very sorry to the nation at large. It was a huge loss to the school.

“We express an equal measure of apology to the Nigeria Media, another critical stakeholder, in case we have sent unbearably quiet signals. We have been quiet because this death was so shocking, we opted more for introspection and moral rectitude rather than strutting around the Media space to seize narratives. Moreso, we considered it imperative to allow the parents and indeed the entire Adeniran family the honour of their privacy as we all mourn this unfortunate loss. Whitney Adeniran was a bright and lovely student. She was popular and friendly. Her memory lives with us.

“We hereby vehemently refute the claim making the rounds that Chrisland School intends to exhume Whitney’s body. We have no such plan and assure the public that we are also parents in mourning and will not do or subscribe to anything that paints such insensitive optics that prevents our dear daughter from resting. We assure you all that no such thing will happen. Rather than do this, plans are underway to immortalize Whitney’s name so she can remain indelible in our consciousness. This is without prejudice to the ongoing Coroner inquest but it is an honour we owe her.”

“Responding to every sensation or misinformation peddled, therefore, does not serve this purpose and we, therefore, continue to uphold restraint. Unfortunately, this quiet is coming with regrettable, misconstrued conclusions. Nonetheless, Chrisland Schools will continue to cooperate with the authorities throughout the duration of the investigations, and also offer the parents every necessary support in this grieving period.

“In the meantime, we have continued to engage the Adenirans. We are not relenting, because she is our daughter too and we shall always be there with the family to navigate this dark period. To all those who have stood truly by us and the Adenirans at this trying moment, we convey our sincere gratitude.”

The school however took down the post on its Instagram page after the deceased student’s mother, Mrs Blessing Adeniran said that the school never loved Whitney because they still went ahead with the inter-house sports competition the day she passed away.

Chrisland High School, Lagos, where a student died during its inter-house sports competition on Feb. 9, remains shut, Lagos State government declared on Sunday.

It stated that the continued closure of the school after the death of the 12-year-old student, Whitney Adeniran, was to further investigate alleged endangerment of students and others.

“The closure of the school paved the way for unhindered investigation and afforded all stakeholders, including parents, students, staff, and friends of the deceased, time to grief,’’ Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, stated.

“In view of the circumstances surrounding the death of the child, the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice ordered a coroner’s inquest into the matter to ascertain the cause.

“The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) conducted the autopsy on Feb. 15.

“It was conducted by Prof. Sunday Soyemi, Consultant Pathologist, LASUTH in the presence of Dr Samuel Keshinro, Consultant Pathologist, representing the deceased’s family, and Dr. Olugbenga Oyewole, Consultant Pathologist representing Chrisland Schools.

“The autopsy report, dated March 1, revealed the cause of death as asphyxia and electrocution.

“The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice consequently directed that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to issue a legal advice on the matter.

“Without prejudice to the criminal proceedings, the school will remain shut to further interrogate the endangerment of students and others,’’ the commissioner added.

She stated also that team from the Office of Education Quality Assurance also had a meeting with the management of the school to ascertain adherence to child safeguarding policies.

“The meeting examined the planning of the inter-house sports event and the aftermath of the unfortunate incident.

“It was discovered that there were lapses,’’ she said in the statement.

Adefisayo added that a government delegation visited to commiserate with the family of the deceased on March 2.

She reassured that anyone found culpable in the death of Whitney would be made to face the law.

She said: “The autopsy result is out and Desola was electrocuted. My daughter died of electrocution. I have been subjected to trauma for the past two weeks. Tomorrow will make it three weeks my baby died. The school made me think I was crazy. They started pushing the narrative of she was sick; she was sickly. They sent letters and publications out.

“People insulted me and my family. My child was electrocuted to death. I told the school I don’t want trouble. All I want is answers. They came to my house and knelt down. I begged, I pleaded, I said ‘Mrs Amao please, I don’t know how autopsy is being done but I have browsed it and the image is scary. Please my daughter is already dead, don’t make me put her through that, they will butcher her. I beg you in the name of God, you are a mother, help me investigate and find out what happened.’”
