My mother in-law told me to get her daughter pregnant before marriage, man tells court

A divorce-seeking man, Basiru Sodiq, on Wednesday told a Mapo Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Ibadan that his mother in-law begged him to get her daughter, Amdalat pregnant before marriage.

Sodiq, made this known in his counter argument against his wife’s allegation of lack of care and gross irresponsibility leveled against him.

”I acted according to the wishes of my mother in-law, She later did a 90 degrees and denied me in the presence of the entire household.

“I don’t actually know what went wrong. Her parents simply told me that they will never allow their daughter to be with me.

“She also denied me access to the child,” Sodiq said.

Amdalat, a fashion designer, had earlier informed the court that her estranged lover was not responsible, hence, not caring for her and the three-year-old child.

“My lord, since I gave birth, Sodiq only gave me N1,500 twice and a baby dress, he kept dodging his responsibilities.

“Sodiq has no regards for my parents because he disrespects them.

“When our child was ready to start school, I contacted Sodiq, but he did nothing concerning the school fees and any other payment.

“There is no valid marriage between us, please compel him to take full responsibility,” Amdalat stated.

Delivering judgment, the court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo held that there was nothing to dissolve between Sodiq and Amdalat because there was no marriage in the first place.

Akintayo said that there was no evidence before the court that bride price and other important things necessary for a marriage to be described as a customary one were presented by the respondent.

She however, granted the order awarding custody of the child to the petitioner.

Akintayo also directed Sodiq to pay a monthly feeding allowance of N10,000 for the child’s upkeep.

She granted the order restraining Sodiq from disturbing, harassing, intimidating and interfering in the private life of Amdalat.

The court’s president directed the duo to be jointly responsible for the child’s education and other welfare.

Furthermore, she ordered Amdalat not to deny Sodiq access to the child.

45-year old man allegedly beats wife to death

A 45-year-old carpenter, Segun Omotosho, who allegedly beat his wife, Olubukola to death, has been arrested by the Police in Ogun.

The Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday.

Oyeyemi said detectives arrested the suspect on Sunday in Akinseku Village, Abeokuta, where he had gone to hide after committing the alleged crime.

The police spokesperson stated that the deceased, an NCE holder, had established a private school registered in both in her name and that of her husband.

Oyeyemi alleged that the suspect, who had always wanted to take over the school from his deceased wife, physically assaulted her by hitting her with a padlock on her head after a disagreement.

According to the PPRO, the wife sustained serious injury and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where she died.

” She, however, left behind a voice note for her family relating what transpired.

” The arrest of the suspect followed a complaint lodged at Kemta divisional headquarters on Nov.  14, by the deceased elder sister, who reported that the deceased was beaten and seriously injured by her husband over a minor disagreement.

“Unknown to the husband, the deceased had sent a voice note to her family members, informing them that her husband has used a padlock to hit her on the head while beating her.

“And that if she died, they should be aware that it was her husband who killed her.

“Acting on the report and the recorded evidence, the Divisional Police Officer, Kemta, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed detectives to go after the killer husband and fish him out from wherever he might be.

“He was subsequently traced to Akinseku village, Abeokuta where he has been hibernating, and was promptly apprehended.

“As soon as the voice note was played to his hearing, the husband took to his heels, having realised that his evil deed had been exposed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect be transferred to Homicide Section of the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Lessons from women in the Bible: “Abigail: The wise wife”

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Lessons from women in the Bible: “Abigail: The wise wife”

    By Oke Chinye

    Read: 1 Samuel 25:1-44

    Meditation verse:

“Then David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this  day to meet me!” (1 Samuel 25:32).

In the next few days, we will be highlighting lessons we can learn from some  women in the bible. Their lives will teach us powerful lessons as we identify with  their trails, battles, mistakes, and triumphs. There’s something for the older  woman, the bitter, the broken hearted, the desperate and the lost. We will gain  insights, strength, encouragement, and motivation to forge ahead on our own  paths.

We begin with Abigail, whom the bible describes as intelligent and beautiful in  appearance. She was also a very humble woman. Her husband Nabal was  wealthy, but he was harsh, insensitive, and unwise. When king David sent his  men to Nabal to give them some of his supply, Nabal treated the men with  disdain, saying “who is David, and who is the son of Jesse? There are many  servants nowadays who break away each one from his master. Shall I then take  my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give  it to men when I do not know where they are from?” David was infuriated when  the matter was reported to him, and he determined to kill every male connected  to Nabal. His men had provided security for Nabal’s shearers and sheep in  Carmel, and he had expected Nabal to be more gracious.

When the matter was reported to Abigail, Nabal’s wife, she made haste and took  two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five sheep already dressed, five  seahs of roasted grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes  of figs, and loaded them on donkeys and set off to meet David. “She fell at his  feet and said: “On me, my lord, on me let this iniquity be! And please let your  maidservant speak in your ears and hear the words of your maidservant. Please,  let not my lord regard this scoundrel Nabal. For as his name is, so is he: Nabal is  his name, and folly is with him! But I, your maidservant, did not see the young  men of my lord whom you sent. Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord lives and  as your soul lives, since the Lord has held you back from coming to bloodshed

and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now then, let your enemies  and those who seek harm for my lord be as Nabal. And now this present which  your maidservant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who  follow my lord. Please forgive the trespass of your maidservant…”

Through her wisdom, discernment, and ability to act quickly, Abigail prevented  the wiping out of every male linked to her husband. She could have said “that’s  his business”, when the matter was reported to her, but she knew her husband’s  weakness and how to make up for it. She was also not willing to let his  shortcomings undermine her entire household. She also knew her own strength  and how to deploy them to her advantage. Through her persuasive words, she  won King David over. Sadly, her wisdom did not rub off on her husband.

At the end of the day, we are all responsible for our own actions; and life does  not always spare us the consequences of our acts of indiscretion. Whilst Abigail was making up for her husband’s errors, he was busy making merry and getting  drunk, oblivious of what was going on. In the morning, when the wine had gone  from him, she told him all that happened. His heart died within him, and he  became like a stone; and died after about ten days.

“You all know that it is the family that is really involved and we are interested in the peace and tranquility of the family and that is why we have withdrawn it and it is our pleasure.”
