  • I deny choosing PSG for money – Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum insists PSG made an approach to him ahead of Barcelona last season.

The former Liverpool midfielder signed for PSG last month, despite being in talks with Barca for almost a year.

Wijnaldum explained his decision at his presentation yesterday: “It’s funny because I must admit that it was a very difficult choice. I have supported Barça since I was young, I am a fan of this club. We were in negotiations with them and I had a good feeling but I was also negotiating with other clubs.

“PSG even arrived before Barça. We had just talked but it wasn’t really negotiations. But they returned after Barça’s interest. I spoke to Leonardo and then to (Mauricio) Pochettino whom I had known from his time at Tottenham, where I had spoken to him once because he wanted to recruit me.

“At the time, I already had a good feeling about working with him. He explained to me the PSG project, the fact that they want to win more titles in France but also in Europe. He told me what kind of club it was. I told myself it was a good project and I told them that I was open to listen to them. From there, the negotiations went very well and they did everything, really everything, to get me to sign.

“They were faster in the negotiations and I had a good feeling about signing for PSG. It wasn’t about making more money here because the difference wasn’t that huge. I deny having chosen PSG for the money.”

“We see no strong leaders in this team. But mainly I’m talking about Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay today. This is a very mediocre Dutch team.”

“I am still busy saying goodbye to Liverpool. I am still emotional because I got a goodbye that not many players got before me.”

He went on to confirm he and his agent have been in contact with Barcelona, but the confusion over the future of their head coach Ronald Koeman may be a factor in what happens next.

Koeman has been chasing Wijnaldum for the past year and tried to sign him last summer, with the club yet to confirm whether the Dutchman will remain in charge.

“What is happening now between Barcelona and Koeman, I read in the media,” added Wijnaldum, who is set to captain Holland at this summer’s Euro 2020 finals in the absence of his former Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

“It’s hard to judge, I’m not in those conversations, but I think it’s a shame that it comes out like this and has to go like this.

“I would rather see trainers and clubs solve it differently. Not specifically in this case, but in general. But apparently that is difficult.”

  • I’ve lost my friend, Klopp speaks on Wijnaldum exit

I’ve lost my friend, Klopp speaks on Wijnaldum exit

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits losing Gini Wijnaldum in the summer is a blow.

The Dutchman and the club’s board could not find common ground on the length of a new contract or his salary.

Now he is a free agent and can sign for any club in the world.

The Reds closed out their season with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, finishing third in the Premier League.

Asked about Wjinaldum, Klopp said, per the club website: “Where can I start? I met this wonderful player for the first time – we played, obviously, against him, and the first time I met him was in my living room at home because I had see to him and talk to him.

“From the first moment it clicked between us. He is a very friendly, very smart, very open person, and that never changed, that just improved.

“Yes, it is very emotional for me because I lose a friend and I will miss him, that’s how it is. But it’s normal in football that these kind of things happen – it’s not always nice, but normal, and I am really sure he will find a great place.

“Each club who is interested in him should call me and ask about him. Then you will take him, definitely, because I could not be more positive about what he did here. It’s incredible.

“He was not only always available, he played 90 per cent of the time really, really good. People might not know exactly what I mean with ‘good’ because sometimes it’s not that spectacular.

“Sometimes it’s that, but from a young kid he was an offensive No.10, to a winger at Newcastle, to coming here and becoming such a controlling midfielder. That’s a massive step and you only can do that when you understood the game, really, in the right way.

“He scored incredibly important goals: Barcelona, Cardiff I think was very, very important, Middlesbrough was very important. So many top, top-class performances.

“Now, it looks like the time is over but everything will be fine and nobody can take our memories from us. We will share them forever and that’s really great.

“I told him that after the game, he sees it the same way and the goodbye would not be tough if the time you had together was not worth it. So, it’s really tough because we had a great time together.”
