Rivers crisis: Wike’s spokesman accuses Ada George of taking side

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has accused a former Governor of Rivers, Ada George, of taking side in the crisis rocking the state.

Olayinka made the accusation in a statement in Abuja on Thursday while reacting to comments attributed to George on the crisis.

NAN reports that George had, at a news briefing on Wednesday, accused Wike of orchestrating the ongoing political crisis in Rivers.

The former governor also blamed Wike for the imposition of a state of emergency and the appointment of sole administrators in all 23 local government councils.

In his reaction, Olayinka told George and his Rivers Elders and Leaders’ Forum to blame themselves for taking sides when they should have been neutral.

“The moment an elder takes side in a conflict between two children, such an elder has lost the right to intervene and resolve the conflict,” he said.

Olayinka said that George was among those clapping for the suspended Gov. Siminalayi Fubara when he was sitting on the salary and other entitlements of members of the State House of Assembly.

He also alleged that George did not caution Fubara when he was orchestrating the burning and demolition of the Rivers House of Assembly.

The spokesman added that the former governor also saw it as normal for three members to run a House of Assembly of 32 members.

He expressed surprise that the same George was now speaking on who should be blamed for the state of emergency imposed on the state.

“When President Bola Tinubu intervened in the crisis and resolutions signed by all parties, it was this same Ada George that described the president’s intervention as ‘executive rascality’.

“He went further to say that the intervention by the president contravened the doctrine and practice of separation of power.

“Even when the Supreme Court ruled and made clear and unambiguous pronouncement over the Rivers crisis, Ada George and his so-called elders still saw no reason to call Fubara to order,” he said.

Olayinka stated that it was their failure to speak up when it mattered most that had now resulted in the imposition of emergency rule in the state.

According to him, genuine elders sit in a position of neutrality when there are conflicts among younger ones.

This, he said, would enable them to enjoy credibility and respect while sitting on the high table to resolve the issues.

Wike approves recruitment of 34 resident doctors for FCT hospitals

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors for a  seven-year residency training to enhance health-care delivery in FCT.

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the minister on Public Communications and Social Media, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

Olayinka explained that the 34 doctors would be the first batch of 60 medical doctors approved for residency training in eight specialities in FCT Administration hospitals.

He said that five out of the 34 doctors would work in the psychiatric department, four in internal medicine and one in general surgery.

Others, he said would comprise one in anesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.

“This is the first time this is being done outside employees of the Health Management Board, thereby, giving doctors more opportunity and bringing more competent hands into healthcare delivery in the FCT,” he said.

The spokesman added that the remaining 26 doctors would be recruited in due course by the FCTA Civil Service Commission.

He said that the 26 doctors would comprise one for psychiatry department, four for internal medicine, eight for general surgery, five in anesthesiology, and eight paediatrics.

Land revocation: What kind of mentality is that? – Wike refutes PDP’s allegation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has refuted the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that its land title was revoked as a ploy to suppress opposition.

Wike made the statement during a visit by officials of the Body of Benchers, led by Chairman Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), in Abuja on Friday.

Wike, who is also a life bencher, expressed dismay over PDP’s allegation that he had been instructed to revoke the party’s land title in Central Area, Abuja, to stifle opposition.

He pointed out that political, religious, and ethnic sentiments were often linked to every executive action in the country.

He said that the revocation of land titles of allottees, who had failed to pay mandatory ground rent for over 10 years was often misinterpreted as a political move.

Wike pointed out that the PDP had been in power for several years but could not pay the N7.6 million ground rent for its land title in the Central Area, where it was constructing its National Secretariat.

He noted that in spite of generating between N13 billion and N20 billion through the sale of party forms, the PDP had not paid the ground rent, which amounted to N7.6 million.

Wike further explained that the Wadata Plaza, where the PDP’s National Secretariat was located, was not registered as a property of the party but was instead registered under a Senator residing in Abuja.

He noted that the registered owner had failed to pay the ground rent for 28 years, but the PDP continued to claim that the minister was targeting its secretariat.

“Maybe they had a deal with the man and did not complete the deed of assignment and were shouting oh, they sent Wike to revoke the land as a ploy to kill opposition.

“What kind of mentality is that?” Wike asked.

He emphasised that the land revocation was not peculiar to the PDP, stating that other institutions, such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), including individuals had also had their land titles revoked for the same reason.

He said that CBN had been pleading for the reversal of the land title, “but I told the bank to pay the outstanding ground rent before the revocation will be reversed”.

Wike also advised the Body of Benchers to ensure they paid their ground rent, warning that no defaulting land allottee would be spared.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Wike had approved the revocation of 4,794 land titles on March 17, 2025, due to non-payment of ground rent for over 10 years, affecting individuals, corporate organisations, and government institutions.

  • Why NBA faults state of emergency in Rivers – Wike

Why NBA faults state of emergency in Rivers – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has faulted the Nigeria Bar Association’s (NBA) stand that the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers by President Bola Tinubu was unconstitutional and illegal.

Wike alleged that the NBA discredited Tinubu’s decision because the Rivers Government had promised to host their annual general conference.

The minister stated this when officials of the Body of Benchers, led by its Chairman, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), visited him in Abuja on Friday.

He added that the association did not support the declaration of the state of emergency because there would be no money to give to the NBA for the conference.

“What kind of hypocrisy is this?” he queried.

The minister called on the Body of Benchers to call the NBA to order over the association’s unnecessary criticism of the judiciary.

He said that the body should not sit and watch, while the NBA and its members destroy the legal profession.

He said that some of the members of NBA, often, without reading a judgement, go on national television to condemn the judgment and criticise the judges.

He said that such actions have continued with no sanction.

“If you don’t discipline somebody, nobody will learn any lesson.

“We shall no longer allow our profession to be pulled down. I cannot believe, as a lawyer, that you make a contribution to help the legal profession, and you will be criticised by your fellow lawyers.

“Sir, time has come that we need to say look, enough is enough. We cannot continue to discourage our judges and justices. It is not done anywhere.

“I have never seen where members of a profession are the ones that are bent on bringing the profession down,” he said.

The minister also accused the NBA of describing any support rendered by the executive arm of government to the judicial arm, as a bribe.

Wike recalled that, when NBA was building its National Secretariat, the leadership wrote to the executive for support, adding that nobody saw that as a bribe.

“I was the only one who contributed to the NBA to build the National Secretariat. The NBA didn’t see it as a bribe.

“When you contribute to the Body of Benchers, it is a bribe, but when you contribute to NBA it is not a bribe, they will take it.

“The same NBA will rely on state governments to sponsor their activities, but when the state government supports the judiciary it is bribery,” he added.

Wike said that the constant taunting of judges and justices had made them to avoid attending social gatherings or going to church or mosque for fear of molestation.

He added that judges could no longer shake people’s hands freely because lawyers would accuse them of collecting bribes.

“It has gotten to the stage that our Judges are so scared of going to a mosque or church or even  greeting somebody they know because of fear of bribery.

“They run away from shaking people’s hands because they will start accusing them of collecting bride. This must stop,” he said.

Wike’s mega rally: Diri’s security alarm baseless – Aide

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Public Communications and Social Media, says Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa’s security alarm over a rally is baseless.

Diri had on Thursday raised an alarm over an alleged plan by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s supporters in Bayelsa to stage a mega rally and inaugurate the support group.

Disturbed by the development, Diri warned that the state government would not condone any act that would disrupt the peace of the state.

The governor advised security agencies, youths, elders and traditional rulers to be on the alert.

Reacting, Olayinka in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said Nigerians were free to express their support for anyone, anywhere and anytime.

The spokesman wondered why Diri, with all the security apparatus available to him could go on national television on mere suspicion of people planning a rally.

According to him, it is within the right of Nigerians to hold a lawful rally.

He added that if Wike was going to attend any political rally in Bayelsa or anywhere, he would inform security agencies himself.

“It is surprising that a governor had to call the state’s Security Council and Bayelsa Elders Council meetings to discuss a suspicion of people planning a rally for Wike,” he said.

Olayinka advised Diri to face the serious business of governance and stop raising a baseless security alarm over a rally.

  • Rivers crisis: PANDEF chairman, Igali confirms plan to reconcile Fubara, Wike

Rivers crisis: PANDEF chairman, Igali confirms plan to reconcile Fubara, Wike

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has stepped in to mediate between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in a bid to resolve their ongoing political dispute.

This peace initiative, which aims to address the tensions exacerbated by the political conflict, comes after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Chairman of PANDEF, Godknows Igali, confirmed that the forum had arranged for a peace meeting between the two political figures.

Speaking on a TV program, Igali explained that PANDEF had approached a southern governor, unaffiliated with the conflict, to host the crucial meeting.

He stated: “We are a body that is formed to promote dialogue, to promote the reign of peace in the region and also defending, of course, the people. A template has been established, and that template is that we go and talk about how we can arrive at a peaceful resolution to this problem.”

Igali noted that PANDEF would have taken a more reactive approach if there had been no opportunity for dialogue.

“If that option was not there, PANDEF would have reacted totally differently,” he emphasized, adding that the mediation process was already showing promising progress.

Describing the steps PANDEF took to facilitate communication between the two sides, Igali explained that the forum had previously encountered resistance from both parties, who were unwilling to engage in discussions.

However, the situation has now shifted, with both factions showing more willingness to come to the table.

“The committee of elders succeeded in talking to the two sides.

“They met people who were very close to the governor. They met with the governor himself twice. Then they also met with the very close people to the minister of the federal capital territory, and the two sides agreed that, okay, let us arrange for the two principals to meet at a neutral ground,” Igali explained

Igali revealed that PANDEF had already identified a neutral location for the peace talks, with the backing of a southern governor.

“We had already started working on that, on a place where both of them can meet face to face. I can put it out that we had approached one of the governors in the south who is very detached from this matter to host, and he had accepted to host,” he said.

  • Wike, Natasha and the explosions in the creeks – By Etim Etim

Wike, Natasha and the explosions in the creeks – By Etim Etim

Suddenly, the crisis in the Nigerian Senate has been replaced in the headlines by the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Tinubu and the resurgence of bombings in the creeks. Senator Godswill Akpabio is perhaps the happiest politician in the country today because of the respite he has just received. I understand that the ‘’Queen of the Senate’’ was already planning to give interviews to CNN; Al Jazeera and other cable networks to further ridicule the Senate President. She’s also been invited to make presentations at a few women events in Lagos and Abuja in the months ahead. But she’s had to shelve her media plans in view of the national mood and the shift in attention to Rivers; but is going ahead with her intentions to write to Western embassies in Abuja to report Senator Akpabio and advise them to register the Senate President as ‘’a serial sex offender’’. She’s a relentless fighter and she knows what she wants, one of her advisers told me.

Meantime, continued explosions in the creeks of the Niger Delta will disrupt crude oil production and exports, and this would set the economy tailspinning into a chaos. The Nigerian economy has been experiencing its severest fiscal crisis in a generation and further commotions could trigger a recession – a nightmare scenario that is better imagined than experienced. The country has been struggling to go beyond a production volume of 1.5 million barrels per day, and with oil prices hovering between $70 and $77, a deficit of N13. 39 trillion in the 2025 budget, a recession will lead to hyper inflation; job losses; insecurity and political violence. Tinubu’s plan to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2031 is increasingly becoming a mirage. Whosoever pushed Tinubu on this political path is putting him on the path to self-destruct. Did he see this coming or is he sleep-walking into it? Can Nigeria handle full scale uprising in the Niger Delta?

Although his backers are quick to ascribe supernatural political powers to the President, he is clearly out of depth in his handling of the Rivers crisis. He has allowed a combination of bad politics, greed and the politics of 2027 to becloud his sense of judgement. Nyesom Wike was able to procure a bogus election result in favour of APC in the 2023 presidential election and that helped propel Tinubu into office, while Wike became his premier political ally. With another election coming in two years, there has been mounting revolts against the President from important political blocs in the North – a region that gave him an invaluable support he badly needed. The North claims that his draconian economic policies have worsened poverty in the region and his nepotism has denied the region of the patronage it’s used to. Desperate for a second term, the President has turned to the eight Southern States where his party is not in power for succor – four in South-South; three in South East and one in South West. He wants to railroad them into supporting him. Akwa Ibom Governor, Umo Eno is under severe pressure to decamp to APC, while the governors of Bayelsa and Delta have been told to pledge their unalloyed support for Tinubu. The sacking of Gov. Fubara and the House of Assembly through the emergency rule last night is deemed illegal by various constitutional lawyers, scholars and commentators, but it is an option preferred by the president’s strategists as the easiest way to capture the state.

Dismantling the political structures in a state and imposing a military officer on the people is tantamount to a coup and Nigerians are expectedly aghast. Tinubu has imperiled this democracy and we have to stand up to him and resist this dictatorship. Says David Augustine, a Nigerian journalist who is studying for Ph.D in UK: ‘’ Tinubu has been pretending to be a progressive politician; a patriot and fighter for the causes of democracy. He has been pretending to be intelligent and pragmatic. But the veil has been lifted. He has unravels as a scheming, slimy dictator; an economic nitwit and a colossal, corrupt and nepotistic politician entirely fixated on feathering his political and economic nests at the expenses of the people and the nation’s wellbeing. He is unwittingly throwing the country to the pre-Yar’adua era of pipeline sabotage and the attendant near crippling economic stagnation – a situation deftly managed with diplomacy, responsibility, and clear-eyed sensitivity. It took the humility of President Yar’adua and his enormous personal integrity and trust capital to navigate the country through that era. Tinubu does not have the humility, the tact, the integrity, and the character to get the country out of a similar bind. Every step he takes now would be seen as the politics of 2027. Thus, the national consensus that helped to douse the tension just before the amnesty programme would be lacking. The president lacks the sensitivity to act with time. He is too steeped in politics to transform into a national leader and statesman. If care is not taken, his end would be catastrophic for the entire country. We pray we don’t get to that point. His misadventure in Rivers State must be keenly watched for its likely effect on the nation’’.

When this crisis is finally over and the dust is settled (hopefully the roof won’t collapse on all of us), there would be enough admonitions for the key actors. For Nyesom Wike, your greed is your major undoing; for Tinubu, you cannot pretend for too long because you are neither Awolowo nor Ghandi and for Akpabio, ‘’the Queen’’ is not yet done; choose your friends more carefully; set and respect boundaries for your enemies are closer than you think.

Caution Wike over comments on Ijaw people – INC to Tinubu

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to call the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, to order over his comments on the Ijaw.

The INC was reacting to alleged comments credited to Wike in which he said the Ijaw people ”were a minority of minorities in Rivers and other South South States except Bayelsa”.

In a statement in Abuja on Friday, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, National Publicity Secretary INC, said that the congress had taken note of the FCT minister’s remarks.

”We will continue to maintain peace and stability, as we call on President Tinubu to caution him and redirect his focus to his ministerial duties.

“The INC remains committed to preserving the harmony enjoyed by all in the Niger Delta region.

“We have taken note of the recent remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

“Given his eight-year tenure as governor of Rivers we expected a more informed understanding of the state’s history,” the INC said.

For the record, the INC said that the Ijaw people are the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria, with over 40 million people, and the oldest tribe in Nigeria, as documented in history.

“They are the largest ethnic group in Rivers with eight local government areas, and also not a minority in Delta.

“The Ijaw have consistently advocated for fairness and equity in the Niger Delta region and the South-South, and we will not be swayed by individual attempts to provoke us,” Oyakemeagbegha said.

  • Wike V Fubara: Supreme Court fixes date to hear all appeals in Rivers cases

Wike V Fubara: Supreme Court fixes date to hear all appeals in Rivers cases

The Supreme Court has set February 10, 2025, to hear two separate suits filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the validity of the local government elections conducted in Rivers State in 2024.

On the same day, the apex court will hear five additional cases related to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, which began in October 2023 when a faction loyal to former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, attempted to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The crisis intensified after Fubara sealed off the state Assembly complex in response to impeachment moves. Subsequently, lawmakers defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, which Fubara dismissed as illegitimate. This led to the creation of a controversial three-member Assembly that took critical legislative actions, including passing the 2024 budget.

The legitimacy of the Assembly and its decisions have become a legal matter, progressing through the Rivers State High Court, Federal High Court, and the Court of Appeal before reaching the Supreme Court.

    Legal Consolidations and Disputes

The Supreme Court has consolidated four appeals for a streamlined hearing, including:

Rivers State House of Assembly vs. Rivers State Government
Rivers State House of Assembly vs. Rivers State Governor
Rivers State House of Assembly vs. RSIEC
Rivers State House of Assembly vs. Accountant General of Rivers State
These appeals, along with the two separate APC suits, will be heard on February 10.

    2024 Local Government Elections

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) scheduled the local government elections for October 5, 2024, despite objections from the APC. The APC alleged that RSIEC violated a bill extending the tenure of local government chairmen, passed by the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly.

  • Wike directs security agencies to go after criminals in abandoned buildings

Wike directs security agencies to go after criminals in abandoned buildings

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has directed the establishment of a Special Task Force to dislodge criminal elements hiding in uncompleted structures, abandoned plots of land and buildings across the territory.

Mr Adamu Gwary, Director, Department of Security Services, FCT Administration, disclosed this in an interview with NAN in Abuja on Wednesday.

Gwary explained that the measure was to curb the menace of miscreants, vandalising government’s assets and infrastructure.

He said that the FCT Security Committee had identified uncompleted structures, abandoned plots of land and buildings as some of the hibernating points for miscreants.

“So, the Commissioner of Police in FCT has been mandated to work with his colleagues to form a task team to that effect.

“They have made a submission on Tuesday to the Minister on financing the exercise, which will not only cover pantaker markets, but locations where scavengers are hibernating.

“These included uncompleted and abandoned structures and any other location that intelligence revealed as a hibernating point for miscreants,” he said.

The director said that in the next two to three weeks, there would be strategic efforts to clear all criminal hideouts in FCT and other locations used to unleash their mayhem.

According to him, all uncompleted buildings, abandoned plots of land and structures would be identified and cleared.

“This measure will ensure that criminal elements do not have a hiding place where they can organise to unleash their mayhem on our infrastructure or attack and rub residents.”

Speaking on undeveloped lands, Gwary said that the FCTA Land Department was currently conducting a census of all undeveloped lands in the FCT as directed by the Minister.

He recalled that Wike had directed owners of undeveloped plots of lands to develop their lands or the allocation would be revoked.

He said that the measure, if implemented, would significantly address security concerns relating to undeveloped plots of land, growing bushes and serving as hideouts for criminals.

“So, the lands and other related departments are working assiduously on undeveloped plots of land that are causing security problems for us,” he said.

The director also revealed that the FCT Minister has directed the acting Executive Secretary Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), to take over all under bridges in the FCT.

“The Minister had directed the acting FCDA boss to make a submission on what it will take to secure all under bridges in the territory.

“The idea is to deny miscreants access to such locations, where they used as their hideouts,” he said.

Meanwhile the Police Command in FCT said it had commenced daily raids of identified criminal black spots in Abuja.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said in a statement that the effort was to combat criminal activities and protect public and private infrastructure in the territory.
