Chelsea’s Willian superb strike leaves Newcastle in relegation zone

Chelsea moved one point behind third-placed Tottenham with a victory over a Newcastle side who are now in the relegation zone.

Pedro gave the Blues an eighth-minute lead when he collected David Luiz’s ball over the top, took a touch, then shot past Martin Dubravka.

But Newcastle equalised through Ciaran Clark’s powerful header when he got between Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz from Matt Ritchie’s corner.

Willian won it for Chelsea in the second half with a fine curling finish after being played in by Eden Hazard.

The result leaves Maurizio Sarri’s side fourth, six points clear of Arsenal, who they face at Emirates Stadium in their next game on 19 January.

  • Transfer news: No January exit for Willian, says Sarri

Transfer news: No January exit for Willian, says Sarri

Maurizio Sarri says Willian will not be allowed to leave Chelsea in January following reports Barcelona are ready to reignite their interest in the player.

Barcelona tried to sign Willian last summer, making three bids for the Brazil international, with their final offer worth more than £55m rejected in July.

According to Sky Sports, Barcelona have proposed a deal that would see William depart for the Nou Camp with Malcolm coming the other way,but Sarri says it is “impossible” for Willian to leave Stamford Bridge this month.

Asked about Barcelona’s reported interest in Willian, Sarri said: “I didn’t receive anything yesterday. I have no idea.

“You have to contact the club and ask about the market, because if you ask me about the market, you put me in trouble because I don’t know how to answer. As you know, Willian for us is very important.

“I think he can do better, he can do better because of his potential but he is really very important to us, so I think it is impossible to lose him in January.”

One player who seems set to leave Chelsea this month is midfielder Cesc Fabregas, whose proposed move to Monaco is on hold until Chelsea can bring in a replacement.

  • If Antonio Conte stayed at Chelsea, I would have left – Willian

If Antonio Conte stayed at Chelsea, I would have left – Willian

Chelsea winger Willian says there is “no chance” he would be at the club had former head coach Antonio Conte still been in charge.

Conte won the 2016-17 Premier League title with the Blues but was sacked in July after finishing fifth.

His replacement, fellow Italian Maurizio Sarri, won his first Premier League match in charge, 3-0 at Huddersfield on Saturday.

“The manager tells us to play, to enjoy ourselves on the pitch,” Willian said.

“Is it fun to play this way? I think so. We have a lot of players with quality up front, like Eden Hazard and Pedro. Players like that want to play football.

“That’s why he [Sarri] talked about ‘fun’ football [after arriving at Chelsea]. This is what we will try to do this season.”

Brazilian Willian, 30, was linked with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United this summer but committed his future to the Blues in early August.

Asked whether he would have stayed if Conte had not been fired, he told the Evening Standard: “No chance. No. I’m here because I want to play for Chelsea. I will only leave if Chelsea want me to go.”

Chelsea are at home to Arsenal in their next league fixture on Saturday, and Willian added: “Now we have a different style, that’s why we can create problems for Arsenal.

“Of course, it will be a special game against Arsenal because it is a derby. It is always difficult against them. We have to prepare well during the week.”

Barcelona made bid but I intend to stay at Chelsea – Willian

Willian says he intends to stay at Chelsea and confirmed Barcelona made a bid to sign him.

The Brazil winger, 29, has been at Stamford Bridge for five years but was linked with a move away this summer.

Speaking after the 2-0 Community Shield defeat by Manchester City, he told ESPN Brasil: “I always made it clear that what I wanted was to stay in the club.

“The only club I knew that really made an official offer for me was Barcelona.”

He has also been linked to Manchester United and Real Madrid – who are also reportedly interested in Blues duo Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard.

Willian added: “I have my head here and I intend to continue in the club unless the club wants to sell me.”

New Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has only signed two players this summer – Napoli midfielder Jorginho and back-up goalkeeper Rob Green.

  • Chelsea midfielder Willian asks lawyers to act on ‘forged’ letter

Chelsea midfielder Willian asks lawyers to act on ‘forged’ letter

Chelsea midfielder Willian says he has instructed his lawyers to act after a “forged” document was circulated on the “football market”.

The letter appears to show the 29-year-old’s signature authorising a change of agent to represent him.

However, the Brazilian claimed he “never signed the letter” in an Instagram post on Thursday.

Willian has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona this summer.

In the post, Willian said he had been made aware of a document that “has been circulated through the football market”.

“I would like to clarify that I never signed such letter, the content of which I completely deny,” he added.

And he alleged there was “clear evidence that my signature has been forged, or anyway misused”, which had prompted him to instruct his lawyers “to proceed with all appropriate legal measures before any competent courts or authorities”.

The midfielder, who has spent five years at Chelsea, was due to report to pre-season training with the Blues last Friday, after representing Brazil at the World Cup in Russia, but he failed to arrive.

New manager Maurizio Sarri says he is not happy about the “strange” situation, and he will seek immediate talks with Willian.

    Spain

Spain’s back pages have understandably led on their exit from the World Cup. ‘The End of a Generation’ is on the back page of AS while Mundo Deportivo‘s headline is ‘The Ultimate Penalty’.

Steven N’Zonzi – or, rather, his father – has told Sevilla that he would like to leave. The Frenchman has been linked with several Premier League clubs in the past, and reports suggest he has a €40m (£35.3m) release clause in his contract. (Mucho Deporte)

Speaking of fathers, Alvaro Morata’s has got involved regarding the Spanish forward’s current situation. According to Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda, Morata senior has asked Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to re-sign his son. (El Chiringuito TV)

    France

The Buffon saga will soon finally be at an end. The Italian goalkeeper’s move to Paris Saint-Germain reportedly will be made official this week. (L’Équipe)

    Germany

“Does nobody want ex-Schalke Meyer?” asks Bild. The former Schalke player has been officially without a club since Sunday, but few seem interested in the 22-year-old, who continues to train on the Greek island of Mykonos. (Bild)

Benjamin Pavard is staying at Stuttgart, according to their sporting director Michael Reschke. The Tottenham transfer target will not be available even for ’50 million euros’ as the German club look to hang onto the 22-year-old for another year. (Stuttgarter Nachrichten)

Germany’s early exit from the World Cup means their stars will have to jet around the world with their teams on pre-season tours that they would have otherwise been able to miss.
