I have no plans to leave APGA – Ex-Gov Obiano

Former Governor of Anambra, Chief Willie Obiano, said he remained a committed member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Obiano said this in a statement signed by his Publicist, Mr Tony Nezianya on Tuesday while debunking claims that he would leave the party to another in no distant time.

Obiano was Governor of Anambra on the platform of APGA for eight years.

According to the statement, my dedication and loyalty to APGA, both in words and actions were not in doubt.

The former governor said he championed the ideologies and principles of APGA, worked tirelessly to promote its agenda and ensured the party’s continued success after his time in office.

“It is, therefore, evident that I Chief Willie Obiano has no plans to abandon APGA or join another political party.

“I have no plan now or in future to leave the party. There is misguided speculation in a section of the media that I plan to jump ship,” he said.

Obiano urged Anambra Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to fulfill his promise to pay disengagement allowance to all his political appointees as promised them in Aguleri at the point of departure.

He said the gesture would be a befitting way to end their glorious service as well as reward them for ensuring his victory at the polls.

”If you cannot re-engage them, you can at least pay their outstanding allowances,” Obiano said.

Ebele’s Diary and Other Unforgettable First Ladies – By Azu Ishiekwene

I thought there was a mistake. The headline said Nigeria’s former ambassador to Spain and wife of Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, Bianca, slapped the outgoing First Lady of Anambra State, Ebele Obiano. In my head, however, the news read differently. This was not the sort of thing you would associate with Bianca, a former ambassador and beauty queen.

In spite of what I was reading as the news broke, I told myself that the reality was the other way round: Ebele Obiano must have slapped Bianca Ojukwu. If you know Ebele, you will know why in spite of the news, it is easy to be mistaken about what really happened at the swearing-in of Charles Soludo as governor of Anambra State last week.

Willie Obiano may have been governor for eight years, Ebele ruled. She called the shots in respect of appointments, especially those related to internally generated revenue. Onitsha Market, a state cash cow, for example, reported to her through her protégée/manager. Members of the state universal basic education board took their brief from her, too. And inside Government House, her office was so strategically located, you could not mistake that it was the altar at this official shrine.

She was also a major political force whose influence people vying for political positions coveted. Her displeasure was avoided at all costs. She had weight and she knew how to flaunt it.

During the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship primaries last year, for example, Ebele told her husband – the governor – that she had a different candidate. She reportedly told him that Soludo was a risk; they would be unable to control him if he took power.

But the governor wanted Soludo. His wife, on the other hand, made it clear that her preferred candidate was Chukwuma Ume Umeorji, currently representing Aguata federal constituency at the National Assembly. It took the combined intervention of some traditional rulers, along with members of the clergy, to appease Ebele and save the family divided against itself on the eve of an important election.

It would appear that as part of the “terms of settlement”, the governor would later announce that whereas he had no desire to continue in active politics after leaving office, he would secure a senatorial seat for his wife, Ebele, for her labours.

Such is the strength of Ebele’s clout and the fear of her majesty that you can imagine my confusion at the breaking of the news that she was at the receiving end of Bianca’s ambassadorial slap. It turned out that that was indeed the case, and to make matters worse, Ebele was alone in her moment of distress.

She was painfully ignored by her husband at the crime scene and left to be set upon by an ecstatic public that seemed so pleased by the incident it was prepared to forgive the indiscretion of an ambassador who ignored the provisions of the Geneva convention, supposedly in self defence. All is fair in love and war, I guess.

But this may well be an incident that Anambrarians, even the whole world, will look back on with deep regret. Had Ebele been permitted to take the dignified exit that she had hoped for and for which she had made elaborate preparations including a dance rehearsal the night before only matched by her extraordinary butterfly-sleeves pink dress on the D-Day, she might have considered sharing her First Lady diary with us.

The diary of her last days in office was nothing, if not extraordinary, worthier in my view than the famous memoirs of Harriette Wilson, the concubine of the Duke of Wellington who, in defiance of the threat of the Duke to publish and be damned, still went ahead to leak her salacious notes to a blackmailer.

I’m told, for example, that two weeks before the handover, the governor had taken journalists in the state on a final tour of his legacy projects. Later when they returned for lunch in the Government House, Obiano hosted them alone; Ebele was not available. As they finished and were departing, however, she returned.

The governor quickly recalled as many journalists as he could find and asked them to take their seats again. As they were wondering why, he announced that he recalled them to pay their respects to Her Excellency, the First Lady. Now that they had paid their courtesies and she had bestowed her benevolent smile on them, they could depart in peace.

People familiar with Anambra protocol in the last eight years said preferments have been amended to ensure that at all public functions, Ebele was duly acknowledged and applauded before the deputy governor. And, in fact, even on the handover day, Ebele’s diary would show that she was her own woman. She chose her own time to arrive at the venue which, by the way, was inside Government House. She arrived, not before the event started, but in line with her disdain for all deputies, including deputy governors, she came in after the new deputy governor had been sworn in.

Ebele has amassed such a rich collection of experiences in the last eight years, the world, especially the office of first ladyship, would be the poorer for the recent public humiliation which I strongly suspect might force her into her shell. Who wouldn’t want to find out what exactly was her beef with Bianca, for example?

I’m told that she was unhappy that Bianca took the Ojukwu political talisman too far. That just because she’s Ojukwu’s wife, Bianca regarded herself as the goddess of APGA, the sun around which everything revolved.

The cold war continued for years. When Bianca made a bid for the Senate in 2019, however, Ebele thought that was the moment to settle the matter of supremacy once and for all. She opposed Bianca’s candidacy and instead, backed E.N. Ukachukwu, the perennial aspirant for Anambra governorship and veteran Abuja politician.

Of course, Bianca “lost” the APGA party primaries to Ebele’s candidate, but another party, the YPP, exploited the divided house and won the bigger electoral war for Anambra South senatorial district. In the end, both Bianca and Ebele lost. That defeat widened the gap and festered the wound. By handover day, matters had reached boiling point.

Ebele is unforgettable. How can anyone forget her pair of crystal-studded Gucci glasses estimated by some to be worth only $2,755 or the equivalent at current prices, of three years’ minimum wage in the country? I think, if she had been treated nicely, she might even have decided to leave the exotic “bones” behind in the state museum. But sadly, that chance has been missed.

And also gone with the Gucci glasses is the inside story of the designer Covid-19 vaccine which Ebele travelled thousands of miles to Houston to receive at a time folks in her home state were wondering when the first jabs would arrive and if they would be alive to be vaccinated.

I’m sure that entries from Ebele’s 2014 diary would also have included the now leaked encounter in Poland where it took Nigeria’s former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, to save Ebele from what might have degenerated into a brawl, on foreign soil, with a Federal lawmaker, Uche Ekwunife. Mrs. Jonathan’s prompt and decisive intervention at that moment of great peril, it would seem, was one of the reasons insiders will forever remember the erstwhile First Lady as “Mama Peace”.

Ebele has given her side of the handover-day story; she explained that on that fateful day, she went over to admire the gloss on Bianca’s lips and to greet her only to be molested and struck in the face by the latter. I honestly think Bianca’s act of aggression constitutes a contravention of the Geneva convention. It was unprovoked (just like Putin’s war in Ukraine), and should be condemned in its entirety. Her supporters, whether they are oligarchs or puny-garchs, should also have their assets frozen as a deterrent.

Yet, Ebele is in good company of a long list of forebears who, though in a higher league, would have been proud of her performance. Former Kenyan First Lady, Lucy Kibaki, once slapped a government official during an Independence Day ceremony for mistakenly introducing her in the name of a woman widely believed to be President Mwai Kibaki’s second wife. That was apart from besieging a newspaper house, slapping a cameraman and seizing a reporter’s notebook on charges that the newspaper had been unfair in its reporting.

Simone Gbagbo, wife of former Côte d’Ivoire Président Laurent Gbagbo, seemed to share Lucy’s aggressive genes; while Patience Jonathan was perhaps a softer, more dramatic and hilarious version of Lucy and Simone.

Grace Mugabe (fondly called Gucci Grace) had a cerebral approach. She pulled the strings behind the scenes and like the breeze, you knew she was there but you couldn’t hold her. She topped off her performance by procuring a postgraduate degree which became a subject of litigation only after her husband’s death. Her fury only came to the fore after her bereavement. Understandably.

Let no one diminish Ebele’s record. She will be greatly missed. In my humble view, our misery can only be assuaged if she could find it in her heart to let bygones be bygones, followed by the publication of her much-expected Government House diary.

It would be a bestseller, the envy of her cohorts, her ultimate revenge against Bianca, and for good measure, the launchpad for her senatorial ambition.

Why am qualified for leadership at any level- Peter Obi

Former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi has given reasons he is qualified for leadership at any level and could help Nigeria to “rediscover herself”.

In a press release by his media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, the former Anambra governor said he saved massively for the state.

Obi had, during the twilight of his tenure as governor of Anambra State, announced that he was leaving behind N75 biliion for his successor, Chief Willie Obiano.

The explanation by the ex-governor on why he saved is coming after the incumbent, Prof Chukwuma Soludo recently stated on national television that he met only a paltry N300 million in the coffers of the government, with a debt of over N100 billion.

He said: “Often some people who are not experts in finance and statecraft question the rationale behind savings which Obi embarked on out of mischief, display of continued opposition, hatred or pure ignorance.

“I often express surprise at their viewpoints, because even among animals, we see the practice of saving for tomorrow out of today’s surplus. However, among the human family, we need not save only when there is surplus.

“If, for example, one plans to buy a car next year, would one not start saving money for that? Savings is about planning and, as Obi always said, “If you do not plan, you have planned to fail.”

“As for those in the habit of arguing against what they do not understand, I hope you will commend the debt burden that will weigh Anambra down as revealed by Prof. Charles Soludo. May I present to you the rationale behind Obi’s savings in the State as he himself explained.

“Unfortunately, we live in a system where people do not think about tomorrow and do not plan for future generations but would prefer to obliterate accumulated income and put the state in debt before exiting the office.

“These are the reasons he is qualified for leadership at any level. In fact, we need such a man for Nigeria to re-discover herself.”

Ex-Anambra Governor who served under the auspices of APGA, Peter Obi has stated reasons he deposited so much money for the state when he was handing over to Willie Obiano.

Obi had, during the twilight of his tenure as governor of Anambra State, announced that he was leaving behind N75 billion for his successor, Chief Willie Obiano.

Recall that the present Governor Charles Soludo, upon getting his mantle of leadership had mentioned that his predecessor Willie Obiano had left the state in debt. He claimed that just a paltry 300 million naira was left in the coffers and a huge debt of Over 100 billion naira.

EFCC takes disciplinary action against officer over Obiano’s leaked video while in custody

Following the leaked video of former Anambra Governor, Willie Obiano, drinking water while in custody, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has taken disciplinary action against one of its officers.

This was disclosed in a statement titled “EFCC Subjects Officer Behind Obiano’s Video Leak to Disciplinary Action”.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a trending video showing the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano in the custody of the Commission.

“The Commission wishes to distance itself from the said video which is completely at variance with the established Standard Operating Procedure of the EFCC. A discreet investigation ordered upon discovery of the leak has revealed the errant officer behind the odious act and he is currently being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.”

Obiano was arrested last Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on his way to Texas, United States.

He was granted administrative bail on Monday after four nights in EFCC custody.

Obiano arrest: Anambra women send strong warning to EFCC

Anambra women under the aegis of Anambra-North Women Empowerment Movement have sent a strong warning to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), threatening to go naked at the national headquarters of the Commission if former Governor Willie Obiano is not released from detention immediately.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Chairperson of the group, Mrs Uju Ifunanya Edochie gave the warning on Monday in a statement released to journalists, while also condemning an online video showing Obiano drinking water in the EFCC custody.

The Anambra women accused the antigraft agency displaying “unruly acts”, stressing that “the EFCC facility is not safe, if they could humiliate an ex-governor, made a video of him in their supposed protective custody and sent to social media for the public to mock”.

The statement reads: “The Anambra-North Women Empowerment Movement hereby issue stern admonitions to EFCC for its reckless and unprofessional behaviour towards handling the case of the Obiano.

“We the women of the state strongly condemn the vile trending online video clip of Obiano while in EFCC custody. It is quite obvious that the particular video was taken without his knowledge nor consent and as such, this premeditated brouhaha by the EFCC seems to veer into a caricature and witch-hunting which is a mockery of Nigeria’s judicial due process.

“The former governor was one of the leading performing governors in Nigeria, as he had profound achievements in agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, commerce and trade, security, employment rate, civil service as well as state economy.

“Anambra ranked lowest in poverty index, the unemployment rate dropped drastically, three jumbo rice mills were established in different parts of the state, 17 iconic bridges and flyovers were constructed with numerous standard roads throughout the state, functional street and traffic lights were mounted on all roads, built the first Anambra Airport and so on”.

The group threatened to “protest at EFCC Abuja office naked if EFCC doesn’t release urgently” the ex-governor.

EFCC apprehends officer behind Obiano’s leaked video

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has apprehended the officer behind the video showing former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano in the custody of the Commission.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the EFCC in a statement refused to give the identity of the officer responsible for the video but stated that the person involved is currently being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.

“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a trending video showing the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano in the custody of the Commission.

“The Commission wishes to distance itself from the said video which is completely at variance with the established Standard Operating Procedure of the EFCC.

“A discreet investigation ordered upon discovery of the leak has revealed the errant officer behind the odious act and he is currently being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” a statement by EFCC reads.

Recall that the antigraft agency had arrested Obiano on allegations of misappropriating N42 billion belonging to Anambra State. While in the custody of the Commission, a video of the former Governor surfaced on social media in which he was seen drinking water.

The viral video soon met with condemnation from different quarters, including from the royal fathers of Anambra State.

Royal fathers decry Obiano’s treatment in EFCC custody

The Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council reacted to the online video showing Obiano in the custody of the EFCC by strongly condemning the release of the video to the public.

In a statement signed by its Chairman and Obi of Onitsha, Prof. Nnaemeka Achebe, the council stated that it was embarrassed over the viral video showing Obiano dressed in a red boxer shorts and a white T-shirt in the EFCC custody.

The statement, which was made available to newsmen in Awka on Monday, decried the “inhuman treatment” to Obiano and queried how the video leaked to the social media.

It called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney-General, Mr Abubakar Malami, to call the EFCC to order, “regarding the appalling condition Obiano is being subjected to”.

The statement read: “The attention of the council has been drawn to a video clip circulating on the social media showing Obiano in EFCC custody wearing a red boxer shorts and a white T-shirt only.

“The traditional rulers are utterly shocked and disappointed that someone of the status of a former state governor would be treated in such a distasteful and reprehensible manner by an agency of the Federal Government.

“We are equally disturbed that such a video clip found its way out of the highly secure environment of the EFCC onto the social media, obviously, with the intent of causing maximum embarrassment to Obiano and, by extension, the people of Anambra.”

Achebe further stated that “without prejudice to the responsibility of the EFCC to carry out its statutory duties, such treatment to Obiano is absolutely dehumanising and would not bring any value to whatever investigation being conducted by the EFCC”.

He stated that the council, on behalf of all the traditional rulers in the state, “calls on the EFCC to treat Obiano with due civility.

Achebe further urged the commission to “immediately restore Obiano to his personal comfort, whilst expeditiously working to conclude its investigation”.

Obiano was arrested by EFCC in the evening of March 17 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

He was allegedly on his way out of the country shortly after handing over to Prof. Charles Soludo, when he was arrested.

BREAKING: EFCC grants Former Governor Willie Obiano bail

Immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano has been granted bail, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the EFCC said Obiano was yet to meet his bail conditions and, therefore, still in custody.

Chairman of EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa disclosed this on Monday in an interview with journalists in Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).

He disclosed this to journalists on the sideline of the 5th Annual General Assembly (AGA) of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIMA).

“Although, he has been granted bail, we are waiting for him to perfect his bail conditions.” Bawa noted “he has been cooperating with us and everything is going on well,”

TNG reports Obiano was arrested on Thursday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos and brought to Abuja on Friday morning.

Obiano is being investigated for an alleged misappropriation of N42 billion belonging to Anambra State. Of the N42 billion, N5 billion is Sure-P money and N37 billion security vote. These were allegedly withdrawn in cash.

The anti-graft agency boss insisted that there was nothing political about Obiano’s investigation.

“There is nothing political about the investigation. You know what the EFCC stands for.

“We investigate crimes. We look at people that have committed crime and we link it up together. Thereafter we go to court.

“That is all we have been doing and that is what we will continue to do.

“We have been accused of media trial. We will continue to do our investigations professionally, ” Bawa said.

Uwujaren further confirmed that the former Anambra State Governor is still in the custody of the EFCC, undergoing interrogation after his arrest on Thursday.

Obiano, who was arrested at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, was moved to Abuja on Friday morning.

The EFCC spokesman emphasized that the former Governor had not been released.

“The former governor is currently in our custody undergoing interrogation, and I cannot say exactly when he will be released. I don’t know how long the exercise will take.

“All I can tell you now is that he is still in EFCC’s custody in Abuja,” he said.

EFCC makes u-turn, transfers Obiano from Lagos to Abuja

The immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano has been transferred from Lagos State to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for further investigation.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports this is contrary to earlier report that Obiano, who was seen leaving the EFCC office in Lagos in company of his wife, Ebelechukwu Obiano, had been released.

Recall that the antigraft agency arrested Obiano on Thursday at about 8.30 pm at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos over corruption allegations.

He was arrested as he was preparing to board a flight to Houston, Texas in the United States of America (USA).

This was hours after Obiano dropped his constitutional immunity after handing over as governor of Anambra State.

Following the report that Obiano had been released, the EFCC clarified on Friday that the suspect was actually being taken away from their Lagos office to Abuja for further investigation.

The spokesperson for the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujiaren, confirmed the recent development in Lagos.

“The ex-governor was arrested in Lagos, but was moved to Abuja this morning (Friday),” Uwujiaren said.

The commission’s spokesperson said that Obiano had been on the EFCC’s watch list for some months, adding that his immunity as a governor prevented his arrest until he handed over to his successor.

Uwujiaren said the commission had requested the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to provide information on the former governor’s movement out of the country from airports, or other points of exit from the country.

However, the Commission is yet to release details of Obiano’s offence.
