Anambra to start receiving 13% oil derivation from March

Gov. Willie Obiano says Anambra will begin to earn 13 per cent derivation in line with its status as an oil producing state from March.

Obiano disclosed this at a parley with journalists in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area after a tour of the Awka International Convention Centre and Anambra Cargo and passenger airport on Saturday.

He said he was notified by the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Pricing and Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA) who had confirmed lifting of crude oil in commercial quantity in Anambra.

He said Anambra had 15 oil wells with ENIYE 10940 Oil field operated by SEEPCO fully operational and wholly owned by the state.

Obiano also said the rice production of the state had hit 530,000 metric tonnes yearly from the 85,000 metric tonnes capacity of 2014.

He said the revolution his administration brought into the agricultural sector made the state become not only self-sufficient in production but a net exporter of the commodity.

He said the state demand was just about 330,000 metric tonnes of the total output noting that a lot of businesses had been invested in the sector and that many family economies had been transformed by the boom.

He said the Anambra Airport which was fully operational would boost trade and commerce as well as export capacities of the state.

Obiano said the 10,000 capacity International Convention Centre would be inaugurated in March 9.

He noted that he would not be going for any political office but announced that his wife, Mrs Ebelechuwku Obiano, would be contesting for Anambra North Senatorial District.

BREAKING: EFCC places Anambra Governor, Willie Obiano on watchlist ahead of handover

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed the incumbent Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on a watchlist, ahead of the handover of government in the state.

This was contained in a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) dated November 15, 2021.

The EFCC requested the immigration to place Governor Obiano on a watchlist and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.

It is, however, not clear why the anti-graft agency placed the governor on a watchlist.

Sources the move was an indication that the agency may have been discreetly investigating the governor and possibly have intelligence that he was planning to escape after handing over power to his successor, Professor Charles Soludo, on March 16, 2022.

Sitting governors in Nigeria have immunity from criminal prosecution while in office.

Anambra election: Gov. Obiano’s aide dumps APGA for PDP

Ahead of Saturday Anambra governorship election, a Special Adviser to Gov. Willie Obiano, Chief Tommy Okoli, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Okoli , former governorship aspirant under the ruling All Progressives Alliance (APGA), announced his defection at a rally on Thursday in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state.

He said he was supporting the candidature of Mr Valentine Ozigbo and his running mate, Mrs Azuka Enemo of the PDP in the election.

According to him, he is throwing his weight behind Ozigbo, having x-rayed all the candidates and finding PDP most qualified for the task of “redeeming” Anambra.

Okoli said he had consulted widely the people of his constituency who wholly supported his decision to join the PDP.

“I have decided to endorse the ticket of PDP with Mr Valentine Ozigbo and Azuka Enemuo as governorship candidate and running mate respectively to win the Nov. 6 election in Anambra State.

“I will use all the resources, contacts and enormous goodwill available to me to support their ticket.

“I took this difficult decision after due consultation with my campaign organisation and therefore urge members of this platform to please vote for Val Ozigbo and Azuka Enemuo.

“These two people are decent, humble a d compassionate people, capable of transforming Anambra into a more prosperous and secured state, we shall all be proud of.

“I offered myself to serve as the Governor of Anambra State, but Valentine Ozigbo will equally do better by providing purposeful leadership for our people,” he said.

Okoli thanked Obiano for giving him the opportunity to serve and for the support he enjoyed while in APGA.

” I hereby withdraw my membership of APGA.

“I sincerely appreciate, His Excellency Willie Obiano for giving me the opportunity to serve in his administration and I pray to the Almighty God to bless him and his family.

“Thank you so much for your support and may God reward everyone in Jesus name,” he said.

  • Anambra Guber: Speak up on alleged $4 million bribe to INEC staff – Uba tells Obiano

Anambra Guber: Speak up on alleged $4 million bribe to INEC staff – Uba tells Obiano

…urges security agencies to expose persons involved

Forty-eight hours after a programmed bid to compromise the outcome of the November 6, 2021 gubernatorial election in Anambra state was blown open, those fingered in the deal are, sadly, still walking the streets, free.

Expressing disappointment at the development, the Senator Andy Uba Governorship Campaign Organisation, SAUGCO in a statement issued by its Director, Media and Publicity, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene yesterday in Awka, the State capital, called on the nation’s security agencies to swiftly unravel those behind the sordid attempt to subvert the will of ndi Anambra.

A national newspaper, Vanguard, had in its edition of Saturday, October 16, 2021 reported inter alia: “A Southeast governor and a top official of the Independent National Electoral Commission have run into trouble with security agencies over a princely sum of $4 million bribe doled out by the governor as bribe to compromise the November 6, gubernatorial election in Anambra state.”

Since the scandal blew open, neither Governor Willy Obiano nor his Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C. Don Adinuba, have mustered the nerves to utter a single word in response, despite clear and unassailable indications that, indeed, the governor at the centre of the bribery saga is the Anambra State helmsman.

“Instead of coming clean on the allegations, as it affects it, the Obiano administration have rather chosen to divert attention, by engaging third parties and social media miscreants under its payroll to engage in a wild goose chase over who the alleged governor and his spouse are.

“Besides the $4 million bribe money, the newspaper report also made mention of ‘the wife of the politician, who is described as an influential and powerful first lady in the Southeast(who) is reported to have been meeting secretly with many electoral officers, EOs, who are key to the forthcoming election.

“In the face of the puerile attempts to divert attention from Mrs Ebele Obiano as the First Lady in issue, we hasten to raise the following posers:

•Which First Lady in the Southeast is reputed to freely dish out slaps to aides and government functionaries?

•Which First Lady did her husband openly address as ‘Her Excellency, the Governor’ in a viral video?

•Which First Lady is known to vet government appointments before release?

•Which First Lady chastised her husband’s deputy, to the point of compelling him to defect to another political party, simply because she took umbrage at him paying a private visit to a prominent son of the state?

Noted the newspaper: “The evidence against the governor’s breach of his oath of office and public trust is strong but he is still protected under the immunity clause, but we will see what happens once his immunity elapses.”

We ask again: Of all the governors of the Southeast, whose immunity is due to expire soon? Governor Willy Obiano of Anambra state, of course.

“We, therefore, call on our nation’s security agencies not to lend credence to current boasts within government circles in Awka, that the bribery saga would fizzle out in a matter of days.

“On our part, we call on the media, civil society organisations and anti-graft agencies to beam their searchlights on the burgeoning crisis, which is capable of tainting the outcome of the Anambra governorship election, if not nipped in the bud.”

”The government has lifted the curfew imposed on Igbariam, Aguleri, Umueri, Nteje, Awkuzu and Umunya communities on April 26, following the return of normalcy in the areas,” the government said.

On Sunday, a violent clash broke out between residents of Anaku and Omor Communities.

The police says three persons have been confirmed dead in a clash between Omor and Anaku communities in Anyamelum Local Government Area of the state.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, told NAN in Awka on Sunday that normalcy has since been restored in the area.

Ikenga said that Mr Chris Owolabi, Commissioner of Police in the state, personally led a team of operatives to quell the crisis between the neighbouring communities.

He said that the command is still gathering information on the extent of damage while assuring that efforts were on to avoid deterioration of the situation and ensure lasting peace.

“Normalcy has been restored in the area and our men are still on ground to ensure safety of life and property. So far, we have recovered three bodies which have been deposited at the morgue.

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has condemned attacks on police and other security agencies in the state, saying it will engender high wave of insecurity.

Obiano made the condemnation on Sunday in Awka in his Easter Day message to the people of the state.

The governor also condemned the attack on Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in which Mr Emeka Ezenwanne, Commissioner of Public Utilities was abducted and four policemen killed on March 31.

He announced that Ezenwanne was released on Sunday and described him as being in a stable condition.

“I have chosen this moment to address the state since the unfortunate incident at Isuofia on March 31, wherein a town hall meeting, involving Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo and youths of the town, was disrupted by armed men, killing three policemen in the process.

“The gunmen also abducted the Commissioner for Public Utilities, Hon. Emeka Ezenwanne.

“I am happy to announce that the Honourable Commissioner is unhurt, very stable and in good physical and mental condition, no ransom was demanded and none paid for his release.

“I must now condemn in its entirety the violence that is erupting in our dear state and the continued targeting and killing of members of security forces working here.

“This tendency portends grave danger for the peace and security we have worked so hard to entrench in our dear state.

“The aftermath of the EndSARS protests is still fresh in our minds with the obvious rise in the crime rate following a lull in security activities,” he said.

Obiano promised that his administration would stand by and support families of slain security personnel who died during various attacks by gunmen.

He lauded the security agencies and all those who were useful in the effort to rescue the abducted commissioner.

Obiano urged all to eschew politics of bitterness and violence but allow peace to rule their hearts.

“Let me now use this opportunity to thank all the security agencies and other critical stakeholders who played one role or the other in our collective effort to free Hon. Ezenwanne.

“To the families of the slain police officers, my heart once again, goes out to you. I share in your grief and mourn with you, while I pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased, please be assured that the state government will not abandon you.

“I hereby urge stakeholders, at all levels of the society, to call for a stoppage of all forms of aggression against the police and security agencies in Anambra State.

“I urge the police, military and other security agencies in the state to continue to do their duties exceptionally, professionally and in line with the law.

“As politics and its activities manifest in our state in the months ahead, let me urge all actors and participants to eschew violence and be mature in all dealings,” he added.

Why I banned use of tinted glass in Anambra State – Gov Obiano

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has banned the use of vehicles with tinted glasses and touting as part of measures to curtail insecurity in the state.

Obiano in a statement in Awka on Monday also directed security agents to clampdown on cultists and their activities.

“Security agencies are hereby directed to arrest anybody hanging on the road with sticks and molesting innocent citizens and drivers,” Obiano said.

He observed that within the past week, the state has witnessed targeted attacks on security personnel and facilities in the state by hoodlums.

“So far, Police and Navy personnel on official duties at strategic checkpoints in various locations in the state were sporadically attacked, killed and their firearms taken away.

“Also, prison and police personnel conveying an inmate to court were equally attacked and killed.

“Anambra State Government categorically condemns these attacks on our security personnel and is doing everything possible to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“Those who attack us are obviously intent on distorting the peace and security we have enjoyed in Anambra in the past seven years and we will not allow that.

“I have, therefore, directed all security agencies in the state, vigilance services, all task forces and every structure in the state security infrastructure to rise in defence of our dear state.

“I hereby raise the security alert in the state and I commit to restoring order and security immediately,” he said.

Obiano said that security agencies would be conducting special operations aimed at neutralising the emerging threats to the safety of the people of the state.

“All kinds of touting in the state in whatever guise, especially in Onitsha, will no longer be tolerated,” he said.

Obiano condoled families of those killed by hoodlums and called on the people of the state to join with the government to protect the state.

“I call on everybody irrespective of affiliations to come together and support government and security agencies to fight our common enemy.

“While I sympathise with the security agencies and families of those killed in these recent attacks, I urge all those involved in ongoing security efforts not to relent,” he said.

  • Anambra congratulates first black Vice Chancellor of a British University

Anambra congratulates first black Vice Chancellor of a British University

The Anambra State government has congratulated Professor Charles Egbu on his emergence as the first black Vice Chancellor of a British university.

Dr Egbu, Professor of Quantity Surveying, will on November 1 assume duties as the Vice Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University in England.

He is currently the Pro- Vice Chancellor (Education & Experience) at the University of East London, having served as the Dean of the School of the Built Environment and Architecture of the London South Bank University and a senior academic at the University College, London.

“This is a great moment for not only the government and people of Anambra State but also all Nigerians and indeed, Africans and Blacks across the globe”, declared Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State in a statement which was made available to journalists in Awka, the Anambra State capital, this morning.

“Professor Egbu’s emergence is a game changer in the history of higher education in a conservative society like the United Kingdom where only last January the Universities Minister, The Honourable Chris Skidmore, decried the fact that the number of Blacks holding senior academic positions in Britain is officially zero”, continued Obiano.

“Professor Egbu reminds all Africans of when Professor Kenneth Onwuka Dike, another worthy indigene of Anambra State, became the first African and Black Principal of the University College, Ibadan, and later emerged its first African and Black Vice Chancellor of the university, which was established in 1948.

“Professor Dike, who graduated First Class in the United Kingdom, just like Professor Egbu, made the University of Ibadan become synonymous with excellence in scholarship and administration throughout the world.

“A farsighted leader, Professor Dike discovered early enough the great promise of such young scholars as Dr Jacob Ade Ajayi, and went out of his way to ensure their rapid rise, despite protests from certain quarters.

“The records which these scholars made in various disciplines and endeavours vindicated Professor Dike’s actions, as he went on to become a distinguished professor at Harvard University until he was called upon, once again, to return home and serve his fatherland”.

Governor Obiano said that he is in no doubt that Professor Egbu, who hails from Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, “will excell in his new role and consequently market our dear state to the world in a most uncanny way.

“I have no doubt in my mind that he will not for a moment forget his roots and how he can contribute to our development”.

Noting that Professor Egbu’s appointment as the first Black Vice Chancellor of a UK university is purely based on merit rather than any primordial considerations, the Anambra State governor stated “with pride that it came when Anambra people in the state, in different parts of the country and all over the world are demonstrating, more than ever before, great competitiveness in education”.

Miss Agnes Ego Maduafokwa from Ihiala scored a bull’s eye in Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) history by getting 365 marks out of a maximum 400 in the 2020 examination while David Nwobi from Nawfia in Njikoka Local Government Area made the second best result in the country.

Two weeks ago, Dr Chidubem Obi from Ifite Dunu in Dunukofia Local Government Area became the first African to emerge the overall best student in Russia’s oldest and most prestigious medical university while Patrick Okigbo III, a member of the Anambra State Vision 2070 Committee set up by Governor Obiano to draw up a strategic plan to make the state fully developed like Dubai within 50 years, was one of the 12 persons across the globe appointed Senior Fellows at John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

“These are really good times for the people and government of Anambra State”, according to Governor Obiano who will next week honour in Awka the two candidates with the best results in the 2020 JAMB examination”.
