Wolves comeback win pushes Ipswich to brink of relegation

Wolves closed in on Premier League survival and left Ipswich on the brink of relegation after a vital comeback win at Portman Road.

Jorgen Strand Larsen and Pablo Sarabia’s second-half strikes cancelled out Liam Delap’s opener to leave the Tractor Boys facing an immediate return to the Championship.

Kieran McKenna’s third-bottom side are 12 points behind the visitors with seven games left after a damaging defeat.

It was a game Ipswich had to win, yet a third successive league victory should now end Wolves’ own relegation fears with just 21 points to play for.

The result meant Southampton will also be relegated on Sunday if they fail to win at Tottenham.

Strand Larsen and Toti Gomes forced Alex Palmer into early saves but Delap fired Ipswich ahead after 16 minutes when he swept in his 12th goal of the season from Dara O’Shea’s knockdown.

It gave the hosts a platform, but keeper Palmer almost conceded a calamitous own goal when he allowed O’Shea’s backpass to drift under his foot before scrambling back to palm it off the line.

Wolves were awarded an indirect free-kick on the six-yard box, only for Sam Morsy to block Emmanuel Agbadou’s strike.

It rattled Ipswich and they remained on the back foot after the break with Joao Gomes hitting the post for Wolves as the nerves grew.

It was no surprise when Spaniard Sarabia found the bottom corner to level in the 72nd minute after excellent build-up play involving Strand Larsen.

The in-form Norway striker, on loan from Celta Vigo, then bundled in the crucial winner from a Sarabia cross with six minutes left for his fourth goal in three successive games.

EPL: Liverpool restore seven-point lead in Wolves win

Mohamed Salah continued his hot scoring streak as a nervy Liverpool dispatched Wolves 2-1 to move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The Egypt forward converted from the penalty spot to make it five goals in four league games with boss Arne Slot watching on from the bench.

Reds boss Slot was given a red card in the aftermath of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby draw with Everton but the Dutchman has until Wednesday to respond to a Football Association charge.

Putting Everton’s 98th-minute mid-week equaliser behind them, the Reds started well at Anfield and opened the scoring after 15 minutes thanks to the determination of Luis Diaz.

The Colombia forward ended a run of 10 games without a goal as he bundled the ball over the line after Salah’s pass was deflected in the box by Wolves defender Toti Gomes.

Twenty two minutes later, referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot as Diaz was felled in the box by Wolves keeper Jose Sa and Salah slotted down the middle for his 23rd league goal of the campaign.

The game looked set to be a routine Liverpool win at the break but Wolves striker Matheus Cunha made it anything but as he beautifully curled home his 12th league goal of the season in the 67th minute – meaning Slot’s side are without a home clean sheet since 1 December.

On the hour mark, Liverpool were initially awarded another spot-kick after Emmanuel Agbadou was adjudged to have fouled Diogo Jota, but the decision was overturned after a video assistant referee review showed there was no contact on the Portugal forward.

Vitor Pereira’s side missed huge chances in the second half with debutant Marshall Munetsi drawing an excellent one-on-one save out of Alisson before Joao Gomes worked space brilliantly but fired his attempt over the top.

There was a nervousness around Anfield as Wolves pushed for an equaliser late on but Liverpool held on to reinstate their seven-point lead at the summit.

  • Arsenal defeat Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card

Arsenal defeat Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card

Riccardo Calafiori fired 10-man Arsenal to a Premier League win at Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card.

Referee Michael Oliver’s first-half decision to send off Lewis-Skelly – after he fouled Matt Doherty 30 yards from the hosts’ goal to stop the Wolves defender breaking from a corner – stunned the Gunners.

At 18 years and 121 days, Lewis-Skelly became the third youngest player to be sent off in the Premier League, behind Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.

Joao Gomes’ dismissal, for a second yellow card after a foul on Jurrien Timber with 20 minutes left, was more routine but it will be no more than a footnote.

Lewis-Skelly’s red could have had an immediate impact on the title race if the second-placed Gunners dropped points to fall further behind leaders Liverpool, who beat Ipswich 4-1.

But they showed resilience to snatch the victory thanks to Calafiori, on as a substitute following a half-time reshuffle.

The defender’s fine low finish with 16 minutes left kept the Gunners six points adrift of Liverpool.

Myles-Skelly’s 43rd-minute red ignited what had been a forgettable game, with the only early talking point Wolves fans’ chants against owners Fosun, calling on them to “back the team or sell the club” with their side 17th in the table.

Pablo Sarabia volleyed over and Kai Havertz nodded wide before he was denied by Jose Sa.

Havertz again went close after the break with Matheus Cunha threatening twice before Calafiori pounced.

  • EPL: Chelsea exposed our problems – Wolves boss

EPL: Chelsea exposed our problems – Wolves boss

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira had no complaints after their defeat at Chelsea on Monday night.

Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke struck the goals for Chelsea, with Matt Doherty scoring for Wolves on halftime.

Pereira said: “We faced a strong team with players that one against one can create chances. We started the game not in the way that I like. We defended too much in the low block.

“We concede two goals in set pieces and a goal that we cannot concede. We need to improve tactical maturity.

“The worst moment of our game is when we are defending in the last third. When we are defending in front of our box, this is a problem for us.”

Just in: Wolves fire head coach after Ipswich defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers have fired head coach Gary O’Neil following their disappointing loss to Ipswich Town. The defeat, which capped a series of underwhelming performances, has left Wolves struggling in their campaign, prompting the club to take decisive action.

A statement from the club thanked O’Neil for his efforts but emphasized the need for a change in direction to improve results. The search for a new head coach is reportedly underway as Wolves aim to turn their season around.

EPL: Wolves sink Southampton in 1st league win

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ fastest goal in their English Premier League history set up a long-awaited league victory as they beat fellow strugglers Southampton 2-0 on Saturday. The win moved them off the bottom of the table.

The hosts celebrated not only the win but also their first clean sheet of the season. However, Southampton’s misery continued. The Saints remained winless on the road and have now suffered nine defeats in their opening 11 games. Wolves climbed to 18th place with six points while Southampton sit bottom on four.

In spite of controlling possession for much of the match, Southampton were undone by two decisive Wolves moments.

The first came in just the second minute when Matheus Cunha collected the ball in midfield and played a perfectly-weighted pass to Pablo Sarabia. He rounded England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and calmly slotted home.

Southampton pushed for an equaliser, with only a controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision denying Ryan Manning’s strike.

But a lapse in intensity early in the second half allowed Wolves to secure the win as Cunha unleashed a thunderous shot to seal a crucial three points for Wolves.

  • Wolves off bottom after late comeback draw at Brighton

Wolves off bottom after late comeback draw at Brighton

Wolves staged a dramatic late fightback from 2-0 down to rescue a point and lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League in a thrilling game at Brighton.

The home side looked to be coasting to three points and a place in the top four after goals by in-form Danny Welbeck and substitute Evan Ferguson put them firmly in control.

That left Gary O’Neil’s Wolves staring at a sixth successive league defeat.

But Rayan Ait-Nouri reduced the deficit in the 88th minute before Matheus Cunha capped an impressive performance with a deflected shot which went in off the underside of the bar in the 93rd minute.

The point was enough to lift Wolves off the bottom of the table after a horrible run of results left O’Neil under serious pressure.

  • Chelsea’s Madueke hits hat-trick in Wolves win

Chelsea’s Madueke hits hat-trick in Wolves win

Noni Madueke’s hat-trick gave Chelsea their first Premier League victory of the season as they beat Wolves in a pulsating and chaotic encounter.

Chelsea took the lead after 98 seconds when Cole Palmer’s inswinging corner was inadvertently flicked on by Matheus Cunha and an unmarked Nicholas Jackson nodded in at the back post.

Jackson stoked an already feisty Molineux crowd with his celebrations – and Wolves rallied on the field.

Rayan Ait-Nouri’s dazzling run set up Cunha and the livewire Brazilian equalised with a crisp low finish from inside the box, before appearing to goad Chelsea’s players.

Palmer then restored Chelsea’s lead with a deft cushioned lob from 30 yards when he spotted Jose Sa off his line.

Wolves got themselves back level for a second time shortly before the break when Jorgen Strand Larsen poked home from the edge of the six-yard box after a free-kick was squared back across goal.

However, England Under-21 forward Madueke’s treble in 14 second-half minutes settled the game as a contest.

The three goals were nearly identical as the winger scored with low angled shots from inside the area, assisted by Palmer on each occasion.

Joao Felix put the gloss on the result late on when he side-footed the ball high into the net from near the penalty spot after being picked out by fellow substitute – and former Wolves winger – Pedro Neto.

EPL: Salah sets record as Liverpool beat Ipswich, Arsenal defeat Wolves in season opener

Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a comfortable win over Wolves at Emirates Stadium.

Kai Havertz headed in the opener from a Bukayo Saka cross in the first half. Saka then added a second with a powerful left-foot shot into the right corner after a quickly taken free-kick.

Despite not being at their best, Arsenal controlled the match and deserved their victory.

Wolves debutant Jorgen Strand Larsen had his header saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, while Matheus Cunha missed a crucial chance in the second half.

Elsewhere, Liverpool started their season with a hard-fought win over newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Diogo Jota scored the first goal after a slick move involving Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Salah then doubled the lead five minutes later, setting a Premier League record with his ninth opening-day goal.

Ipswich put up a strong fight in the first half but couldn’t match Liverpool’s intensity after the break.

In another EPL opening day game, Newcastle secured a gritty 1-0 victory over Southampton, despite being reduced to 10 men.

Joelinton scored the only goal after a mistake by Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. The match saw tempers flare, especially after Fabian Schar was sent off for an altercation with Ben Brereton Diaz. Southampton, despite having 19 shots, couldn’t find an equalizer.

Similarly, Brighton’s new manager, Fabian Hurzeler, celebrated an impressive win in his Premier League debut, as Everton started their final season at Goodison Park in dismal fashion. Kaoru Mitoma, Danny Welbeck, and Simon Adingra scored for Brighton, while Everton had a goal disallowed and a penalty overturned. Ashley Young was sent off for Everton in a frustrating match that ended 3-0 in Brighton’s favor.

Brighton have gone up to the top of the log pending the outcome of the other remaining games of Match day one.

  • I thought I would be sacked after Wolves defeated us 4-2 at Stamford Bridge – Mauricio Pochetinno

I thought I would be sacked after Wolves defeated us 4-2 at Stamford Bridge – Mauricio Pochetinno

Mauricio Pochettino has named the team that almost got him sacked in the current season 2023/24.

According to him, the 4-2 loss to Wolves in February 2024 made him fear he would be sacked by the Chelsea board.

The result saw the Blues drop into the bottom half of the table.

When asked if there had ever been a moment he believed he was about to be sacked, Pochettino replied: “I can be honest. I think after Wolves. Remember what happened after, also?

“I didn’t think we were going to be sacked, but it was a tough moment. That defeat at home was really tough, really tough.

“At this moment, as a coach and staff, you feel loneliness. When you feel like everyone is seeing you as if you’re guilty of something and you don’t know what’s going on.”

Chelsea has, however, hit good form recently, winning their last four matches to climb to sixth place in the Premier League ahead of the final day of the season.
