EPL: Why we lost 5-1 to Manchester City – Wolves manager, Gary O’Neil

Gary O’Neil the Wolverhampton manager, has berated his players for making it “easy” for Manchester City in their 5-1 defeat on Saturday.

Erling Haaland scored four times for the  Premier League champions, with with his second and third goal coming from the spot.

Substitute Julian Alvarez came on to replace Haaland and got on the scoresheet.

O’Neil, who watched the game from the stands, told BBC’s Match of the Day: “We helped them; we did help them. They are obviously an incredible side and they punished us for our mistakes, but some of our mistakes were terrible.

“A couple of ridiculous turnovers for the ball, like really bad that cost us and the first goal. The officials don’t make any difference to the result today, but I don’t agree with the awarding of the first penalty.

“I thought it was a pretty bad decision. You see them coming together like that all of the time. I think Gvardiol’s motion and follow-through created the contact as much as Rayan. I’m not sure what Rayan is meant to do; you can’t disappear at that moment.

“I was disappointed with the awarding of the first one, but then more disappointed with sort of the mistakes my own team made. We just made it a bit too easy for Manchester City.”

EPL: Arsenal rekindle premiership title hopes after beating Wolves 2-0 at Molineux

Arsenal on Saturday go top of the English Premier League after defeating Wolves 2-0 at the Molineux.

Recall that Mikel Arteta’s men  missed the opportunity  last Sunday, following a 2-0 shocking defeat  to Aston Villa at the emirate.

However, the Gunners  were in control of the match at the Molineux and took the lead in the first half, thanks to Leandro Trossard’s smart finish.

Captain Martin Odegaard then scored for the Gunners in the dying minutes of the game to ensure they leave the Molineus with three points.

With five matches to go Arsenal now have 74 points after 33 matches.

Manchester City are second with 73 points from 32 matches, while Liverpool who face  Everton on Sunday are on 71 points.

What Thiago Silva’s wife told Chelsea board after Wolves defeat

Chelsea veteran centre-back Thiago Silva’s wife appears to have asked for the club to sack manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues were beaten 4-2 by Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

Silva’s wife, Belle Silva, posted on social media at the end of the game: “It’s time to change. If you wait any longer it will be too late,” accompanied with two blue hearts.

“Thank you for always speaking your mind,” one supporter said in response, while another replied: “Please tell them. The more you procrastinate, the more it looks unachievable.”

One then stated: “Your husband might not be happy with your post though, seems a bit unprofessional.”

EPL: Wolves stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Matheus Cunha scored a hat-trick as Wolves came from behind to stun Chelsea 3-1 and replace the Blues in the top half of the Premier League table.

Cole Palmer gave Mauricio Pochettino’s hosts a 19th-minute lead when he calmly slotted past Jose Sa following Moises Caicedo’s defence-splitting pass.

But Wolves levelled less than three minutes later when Cunha’s shot took a significant deflection off Thiago Silva and wrong-footed Djordje Petrovic.

The turnaround was complete shortly before the break, courtesy of another deflected shot, as Rayan Ait-Nouri met Pedro Neto’s cutback and sent the ball in off Axel Disasi.

The home supporters greeted the half-time whistle with boos but Chelsea were unable to produce a fightback of their own, instead falling two goals behind when the electric Neto beat Silva for pace and picked out Cunha for his second.

The Brazilian then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after being brought down by Malo Gusto, sending Petrovic the wrong way with eight minutes remaining to put the result beyond doubt before Silva headed in a late consolation.

Wolves’ thoroughly deserved victory moved Gary O’Neil’s side up to 10th, one point and one place above Chelsea after 23 games.

  • EPL: Wasteful Chelsea suffer 2-1 defeat to Wolves at the Molineux

EPL: Wasteful Chelsea suffer 2-1 defeat to Wolves at the Molineux

Chelsea on Sunday evening suffered a  2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.

The Blues were hugely wasteful in front of goal and were made to pay for their lack of clinical finishing as the host scored two goals in the second  half of the encounter to snatch victory against the Blues.

It was a positive first-half for the visitors at Molineux but somehow the game was goalless at the break. Raheem Sterling missed a golden opportunity where he could have played it to one of his teammates for an easier chance.

Mario Lemina then put the hosts a goal ahead early in the second-half and that was enough for the three points. Matt Doherty scored Wolves’ second in stoppage time to make sure of the win for the home side.

Christopher Nkunku then scored in stoppage time to give Chelsea some hope but it wasn’t enough. Below, Bobby Vincent rates each of the Chelsea players that featured at Molineux.

  • EPL: What we must do to Wolves – Arteta

EPL: What we must do to Wolves – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta knows they’ll face a battle against Wolves.

Arteta is aware Wolves will defend deep and in numbers.

He said, “They’re very prepared. They have a lot of quality over there. It’s not a coincidence what they’re doing.

“They perform really well against the top sides and that says a lot about the coaching staff, what Gary (O’Neil) is doing, the way they have prepared and how they control opponents – difficult opponents – especially when they play at home. We’re going to have to try to break them down tomorrow.

“Giving players tools, ideas and understanding the game we want to play. Then, as I mentioned before, it’s about the efficiency we show in the last part of the pitch which dictates the outcome of the game. The other night we were very efficient on that.”

Wolves score twice in stoppage time to beat Tottenham

Wolves scored twice in stoppage time as they came from behind to beat Tottenham in the Premier League.

Mario Lemina netted the winner in the seventh minute of additional time at Molineux, sliding the ball into the far side of the net after an expertly timed pass by Pablo Sarabia.

Sarabia had levelled six minutes earlier with a sublime finish, volleying home after flicking the ball to himself in the air.

Spurs’ 10-game unbeaten start to the season was cut short by their chaotic 4-1 defeat by Chelsea on Monday, but they issued an immediate response on Saturday as Brennan Johnson tapped home after latching on to a Pedro Porro pass.

Tottenham’s impression was momentary, however, and Wolves quickly grew into the game with energetic pressing in the final third, albeit lacking any real cutting edge in front of goal.

Wolves failed to convert numerous chances, with Hwang Hee-chan and Sasa Kalajdzic missing the target from close range, but remained persistent in their attacking intent.

Tottenham failed to come away unscathed after Wolves’ late heroics as they succumbed to back-to-back defeats, missing out on a chance to go to the top of the table.

EPL: Wolves end Man City’s perfect start

Manchester City’s 100% Premier League record came to an end at Molineux as Hwang Hee-chan scored a second-half winner to give Wolves a shock victory against the champions.

City manager Pep Guardiola, forced to watch from the stands as he served a one-match touchline ban, was unable to intervene as his side failed to take control in their usual manner and free-scoring striker Erling Haaland was limited to a single chance.

Still, it did seem as though the visitors were on course to emerge victorious after Julian Alvarez curled home a brilliant free-kick to level Ruben Dias’ early own goal.

But, just as Pedro Neto had gone on a right-wing raid before the opener, Nelson Semedo’s forward surge inspired a second for Wolves, who ended a run of six straight defeats against City.

It completed a miserable day for former Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Portugal international went on strike to secure his £53m move to City last month and the home fans evidently have not forgotten as they jeered him every time he touched the ball before he was substituted at half-time.

EPL: Liverpool thrash Aston Villa 3-0, Palace see off Wolves 3-2 on matchday 4

Liverpool defeated Aston Villa in the English Premier League  by 3-0, courtesy of goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah and Matty Cash’s own goal.

In the 3rd minute of the encounter, the Hungarian latched on to a loose ball from Trent Arnold’s corner and drilled a diagonal shot across the box and inside the far post.

Salah’s pass found  Darwin Nunez  on the right side of the pitch and the Uruguay international’s shot hit the post and went in off Cash to register an own goal in favour of Liverpool.

In the 55th minute, Nunez, who had just missed a sitter from Salah’s cross, flicked on Andy Robertson’s corner and the Egypt international blasted home from close range for Liverpool’s third of the afternoon.

Elsewhere at Selhurst park,  Odsonne Edouard scored twice as Crystal Palace beat Wolves to register their second win of the new campaign.

Edouard opened the scoring after he got in between two Wolves defenders to finish from Tyrick Mitchell’s excellent cross.

Then Edouard combined with Mateta and produced a calm slotted finish.

Matheus Cunha headed home from close range in added time but the points were already heading to Palace.

The scoreline leaves Palace with 7 points  on 7th position after winning two, drawing one and losing 1 while Wolves are presently occupying the 15th position with just a win and three losses.

  • Manchester City sign Nunes from Wolves for £53 million

Manchester City sign Nunes from Wolves for £53 million

Manchester City have signed Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes on a five-year deal.

After overcoming some minor sticking points in final negotiations over an initial £47.3 million ($59.9 million) deal on Wednesday night, both clubs were able to come to an agreement on a £53 million move – a club-record sale for Wolves.

Nunes became Wolves’ record signing when he joined from Sporting Lisbon for an initial £38 million last summer on a five-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

However, the 25-year-old Portugal international was keen to move to the Etihad Stadium and did not train with Wolves in order to push the move through.

Nunes told the club’s official website: “I’m so happy to be joining Manchester City, the champions of Europe and a club I’ve admired for a long time.

“The opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I couldn’t turn down.”

Midfielder Tommy Doyle, 21, heads the other way, joining the Molineux club on a season-long loan with the option to make the switch permanent next summer.

Doyle’s exit follows that of fellow City academy product Cole Palmer, who has joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract.
