Diego Costa returns to Premier League

Wolverhampton returns 33-year-old Diego Costa to the Premier League. The forward comes as a free agent.

Insider Fabrizio Romano reports that the Brazilian Spaniard has signed a contract for just one season. The Athletic writes that at first the club doubted that Diego was ready to play in England, but the player’s desire convinced them. For the sake of the Premier League, Costa refused Rayo’s offer.

    Transfer almost was canceled

At the end of the summer, Wolverhampton invested in 25-year-old Stuttgart striker Sasha Kalajdzic – the team needed a striker due to Raul Jimenez’s severe recession. Bayern watched the two-meter Austrian for a long time – they considered him a good option to replace Robert Lewandowski. A little later, English top clubs joined.

Kalajdzic chose the Wolves but tore his ACL in the first game. The British urgently entered the market, but before the end of the summer they did not have time to sign anyone. Then we decided to sort out free agents and stumbled upon the option with Diego.

The transfer could still fail. The fact is that the Football Association of England, after the UK left the EU, tightened the criteria for issuing a permit. The player must score a total of 15 points in several categories: the level of the last club, the games for the national team and the number of minutes spent on the field in recent times. Costa has been without a club since January, so he just didn’t have enough points.

The Wolves sadly filed an appeal against the FA’s decision – and it was unexpectedly accepted.

    Everyone remembers him

In the summer of 2014, he appeared in London and immediately began to break the records of Chelsea and the Premier League – he scored 7 goals in 4 matches. Everything was so good that at Stamford Bridge, Diego was called the boss and fell in love with an obnoxious character that rivals hated.

Costa scored 20 goals, but a year after moving to Chelsea, he fully opened up. It happened in that terrible season when Mourinho looked as helpless as possible and won only 4 matches until mid-December. Costa became the rudest on the team, arrived at the start of the season overweight and went to concerts in Spain between failed matches. Many fans felt that Diego did it out of spite of Jose.

At the very first training session of the new season, Antonio Conte suddenly found out that Costa, after missing out on the Spanish bid for Euro 2016, wanted to leave. Diego scored and received concessions from the coach, but in the winter they came for him with a huge offer from China. The offered 30 million pounds a year struck at the very heart – Costa invented an injury for himself in order to quickly infuriate the club and leave.

The conflict was hushed up, and Diego became Chelsea’s top scorer in the league season. But all the same, he did not enter into Conte’s plans for the next one: the Italian bought Morata and abandoned Costa. He told him about it via whatsapp. Costa was very offended: «Such things should be said in person, and not through text messages. Conte wrote to me when I was in the national team, and the guys in the team did not believe me that this was even possible.»

Costa returned to Atlético Madrid and crossed paths with Chelsea in the Champions League a couple of times. Now they will meet in the Premier League.

Premier League club, Wolves have signed former Chelsea striker Diego Costa on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since leaving Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro in January.

“Diego will bring something unique to our dressing room and on the pitch,” said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi.

EPL: Wolves make decision on Neto joining Arsenal

Arsenal are unlikely to sign Pedro Neto before the transfer window closes this month.

The Gunners were chasing after the Wolves attacker to round off their summer spending spree.

However, O Jogo states that Wolves have made a decision on the young Portuguese winger’s future.

The club’s hierarchy have decided that he will stay with Bruno Lage’s first team squad for this season.

The club do not believe they can secure a quality replacement with so little time remaining in the window.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are still set to push club-record £72 million signing Nicholas Pepe out of the club in the coming days.

He is set for a return to France on loan, with rumours of a move to Nice.

Todd Boehly spotted as Chelsea play draw against Wolves

Wolves captain Conor Coady headed a dramatic 97th-minute equaliser to deny Chelsea victory on the day the sale of the club was agreed.

With Todd Boehly – the man leading the consortium’s purchase – watching on at Stamford Bridge, Romelu Lukaku looked to have secured victory for the Blues with two goals in three second-half minutes.

But Wolves substitute Francisco Trincao pulled one back with a spectacular effort 11 minutes from time and Coady headed in to level seven minutes into added time.

The Blues’ future is now seemingly resolved and despite their late collapse the point edges them closer to a Champions League spot – they remain third with three games to play, six points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, who visit Liverpool later.

Wolves’ late comeback means they ended a run of three successive Premier League defeats and stay eighth.

  • Eagles goalie Carl Ikeme returns to Wolves training first time in five years

Eagles goalie Carl Ikeme returns to Wolves training first time in five years

Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Ogochukwu Oliseh has described former Nigeria international goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme as a “lovely human being”.

Oliseh mentioned this while reacting to the goalkeeper’s beautiful return to English Premier League (EPL) side Wolves training for the first time in nearly five years.

In his reactions via his Twitter handle on Saturday, Oliseh wrote: “Same here Mimi. Such a lovely human being.”

Recall that Ikeme was invited to Wolves training a few days ago after recovering from an age long illness and the keeper was in high spirits as he joined the rest of the squad for their training session.

During his training with Wolves on his return, Ikeme showed impressive reflexes and looked sharp like he never left.

However, it remains to be seen if Carl Ikeme has returned to full footballing action as his presence in Wolves training still not very clear.

Meanwhile, Oliseh, in 2015, gave Ikeme his first national team bow in a goalless draw against Tanzania.

Ikeme was tipped to be a perfect replacement for Vincent Enyeama due to his heroics between the sticks for club and country.

Ikeme, who spent all his professional career on the books of Wolves, went on to have ten caps for the Super Eagles.

He was in goal when Nigeria defeated Zambia in Ndola in a 2018 World Cup qualifying fixture but was soon diagnosed with Leukaemia.

Ikeme announced his retirement from football in 2018 following his battle with Leukaemia.

Arsenal make huge top-four statement after Wolves comeback win

Alexandre Lacazette scored in the dying moments to help Arsenal take a huge step towards finishing in the top-four with a late 2-1 win over Wolves.

Wolves will feel hard done by after their game plan worked to perfection for most of the contest at the Emirates.

But that will do little to assuage their pain as Arsenal leapfrogged Bruno Lage’s side in the top-four race.

Hwang Hee-chan put the visitors ahead after just 10 minutes, capitalising on a terrible backpass from Gabriel before beating Aaron Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal.

It was exactly what Wolves were looking for and they held onto their slim advantage for 80 minutes until substitute Nicolas Pepe found an equaliser.

The play started with Martin Odegaard, the Norwegian scooping a pass to find Eddie Nketiah, who squared to Pepe.

The Ivorian spun brilliantly around Roman Saiss to give himself a yard of space before finishing past Jose Sa.

Both teams seemed desperate to go for the win, but with fresh legs on through Nuno Tavares, it was the home side who had the final say.

A brilliant one-two between Pepe and Lacazette saw the latter released into box, with the Frenchman scoring from a tight angle to send the Emirates into raptures.

Mikel Arteta’s side are now one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United, but have two games in hand on the Red Devils.

Wolves are now in seventh, five points behind Arsenal and with an extra game played.

  • Arsenal outlast Wolves in spite of finishing with 10 players

Arsenal outlast Wolves in spite of finishing with 10 players

Arsenal beat Wolves at Molineux 1-0 on Thursday in the English Premier League (EPL), thanks to a first-half Gabriel Magalhaes goal.

In spite of playing much of the second half down a man, Arsenal took the lead in the 25th minute when Gabriel poked home from close range.

This was after a goalmouth scramble which followed a corner-kick by the visitors.

It was Arsenal’s first goal in all competitions since Bukayo Saka scored in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City on New Year’s Day.

Saka nearly teed Alexandre Lacazette up for Arsenal’s second just before half-time after a nice team move.

But the France forward’s first-time shot was right at Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa and the Gunners settled for a 1-0 lead at the break.

A frantic second half saw Mikel Arteta’s side left to finish with 10 players after Gabriel Martinelli was shown two yellow cards in succession in the 69th minute.

It was Arsenal’s 12th red card since Arteta’s first match in charge in December 2019.

This is by far the most in the Premier League in that span, with Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton a distant second with seven each.

In spite of going down a man, Lacazette found himself in on goal seconds later with only Sa to beat, but his curling effort on Wolves goal flew just outside of the far post.

The hosts took advantage of the extra man and piled on the pressure to the Gunners defence in the final 10 minutes.

Aaron Ramsdale made nice reflex saves, while Rob Holding cleared a goalbound effort off the line.

Victory lifted Arsenal into fifth place with 39 points from 22 games, while Wolves, who could have gone above the Gunners, remain in eighth position.

  • Transfer: Barca sign Adama Traore from Wolves

Transfer: Barca sign Adama Traore from Wolves

Adama Traore has joined La Liga side, Barcelona on loan until the end of the season.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winger previously appearing close to signing for Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Traore came through Barca’s youth system before leaving for Aston Villa in 2015, and will now return to Camp Nou for at least the next few months.

The Catalan giants have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season for a fee reportedly in the region of 34.8 million euros (38.8 million dollars).

They will also cover the player’s wages.

Tottenham appeared to be on the verge of signing the 26-year-old until Barca stepped in, with his native Spain apparently Traore’s preferred destination.

Traore’s current deal at Molineux expires at the end of next season and Wolves were hoping to cash in on him in the January transfer window.

Already, the Spain international has shown no intent to sign a new contract at the club.

He has managed just one goal and zero assists from 20 English Premier League (EPL) appearances so far this season, albeit from only 10 starts.

He may be a replacement for Ousmane Dembele.

Barca have continued to insist Dembele will be leaving the club before the end of the January transfer window due to his own contract stand-off.

Transfer: Adama Traore agrees Barca deal

Wolves attacker Adama Traore is closer to returning to Barcelona.

Traore has been offered to Barca by his agent Jorge Mendes and Sport says an agreement now exists.

The winger is willing to move to Barca this summer, though a deal could be brought forward in the coming days should the Catalans sell Ousmane Dembele.

Traore was in Barcelona at the beginning of January to speak with Blaugrana directors and there was a summit in which he formally expressed his desire to return.

Along with Barca, Tottenham are also pushing to sign the Spain international this month.

  • Moutinho fires Wolves to first win at Old Trafford since 1980

Moutinho fires Wolves to first win at Old Trafford since 1980

Joao Moutinho fired Wolves to a first win at Old Trafford since 1980 as Ralf Rangnick’s unbeaten start to life as Manchester United’s interim manager came to an end.

The Red Devils finished 2021 with a much-needed home win against Burnley.

But the new year got off to a terrible start as their sloppy, disjointed display was punished by Bruno Lage’s impressive visitors.

Wolves had not played for 15 days due to coronavirus-related postponements.

But they showed few signs of rust at Old Trafford, where Mourinho struck late on to secure a deserved 1-0 win.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had failed to win in their last 10 league games at Manchester United and it looked like that run might continue.

This was after they failed to score in a one-sided first half in which they managed an eye-watering 15 shots.

Phil Jones, making his first appearance in 708 days, was one of the few to impress for Manchester United.

They belatedly showed flickers of life after Rangnick’s decision to take off lively attacker Mason Greenwood was booed.

Replacement Bruno Fernandes struck the bar and then sent over a free-kick which Cristiano Ronaldo directed home from an offside position.

But Romain Saiss also hit the woodwork from a free-kick and Wolves found a way through in the 82nd minute.

That was when Moutinho controlled a clearance and hit a low drive past David De Gea to send the travelling hordes into raptures.

There was a similarly impressive roar at the final whistle after goalkeeper Jose Sa superbly saved Fernandes stoppage-time free-kick to seal victory.
