EPL: Wolves earn first win at Old Trafford since 1980

Joao Moutinho struck the only goal eight minutes from time to give Wolves a deserved victory at Old Trafford and end Ralf Rangnick’s unbeaten start as interim Manchester United manager.

It also needed a Jose Sa save in the fifth minute of stoppage time to earn Wolves their first Old Trafford win since 1980.

Sa turned away a curling free-kick from substitute Bruno Fernandes, who had earlier fired against the bar when he should have done better.

The visitors controlled the opening half-hour and were back on top by the time Moutinho struck, although the goal was unfortunate for central defender Phil Jones, who was one of United’s better performers on his senior return after a near two-year absence because of injuries.

His clearing header fell to the 35-year-old midfielder on the edge of the area and although Moutinho had not scored since February 2021, he kept his nerve to drive a shot through a packed penalty area and into the bottom corner.

The Wolves fans celebrated noisily at the final whistle but it was a crushing blow for Rangnick, with his side remaining seventh in the Premier League, a staggering 22 points behind leaders Manchester City – although they have played two games fewer.

Wolves, meanwhile, are now three points and once place behind Manchester United in eighth.

Man Utd boss Rangnick reveals Wolves homework

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick expects a major test tonight against Wolves.

Rangnick has revealed he’s done his homework on the visitors.

He said, “Yes, another complicated team to play. In most cases they play with a back three or a back five. Very compact on the counterattack, very difficult to outplay.

“And again, it’s about finding the right spots, the right spaces, making the right decisions, playing the ball into the dangerous areas without being vulnerable on the counterattack. This is, against Wolves, one of the most important things.

“That’s the next home game we have, and another game where we will try to get the three points. Against Burnley, they also didn’t concede that many goals so far [this season] and we scored three of them. So why shouldn’t we be able to score goals against Wolves? As long as we keep a clean sheet, or only concede one goal… as long as we score three, everything is okay.

“There is no replacement for winning games. It’s the most important part. This gives confidence to the players. They are unbeaten now for eight competitive games and we have to try and prolong this way of playing.”

Chelsea draw with Wolves feels like loss – Rudiger

Chelsea defender Toni Rudiger admitted frustration after yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Wolves.

The German was part of a back three which nullified Wolves’ threat throughout, limiting them to just one shot on target, but the same could be said for the hosts’ defence in what was a tight and cagey affair in the West Midlands.

“You know our situation, but that point feels like a loss to be honest,” Rudiger said post-match.

“It doesn’t matter about the circumstances and everything. It doesn’t feel good.

“Yes of course it is not easy [preparing in our current circumstances], definitely not. We still had a competitive team out there to do something. We came here to win. We should have provided more chances to score, and if you don’t bury your chances it’s difficult to win away.”

COVID-19: Tuchel blasts Premier League for putting Chelsea at ‘huge risk’ after goalless against Wolves

Thomas Tuchel has criticised the Premier League for putting his coronavirus-hit Chelsea side at “huge risk” by forcing them to play at Wolves on Sunday as leaders Manchester City put Newcastle to the sword.

Chelsea drew 0-0 at Molineux while City eased to a 4-0 away win before Tottenham held 10-man Liverpool to a 2-2 draw, denting the Reds’ title hopes.

But the action on the pitch was overshadowed by Britain’s worsening Covid-19 crisis, with just four games played in total out of 10 originally scheduled.

Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss what action to take over the chaos, with growing questions over the integrity of the competition as the busy festive period looms.

The Athletic reported that clubs would discuss whether to postpone an entire round of fixtures on December 28, 29, and 30 in an attempt to ease the pressure.

Chelsea, who had their request for a postponement rejected, could only field 14 outfield players in their matchday squad on Sunday, with N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Trevoh Chalobah all featuring despite struggling for match fitness.

“We were put in a huge risk of health and safety to the players, not just because of Covid but also physically,” said an angry Tuchel, whose side mustered just one shot on target.

Tuchel, whose stuttering team are now six points behind leaders City, said he did not know what would happen with Chelsea’s fixtures against Brentford in the League Cup and Aston Villa in the coming week.

“I’ve got no idea what happens now,” he said. “We had an idea (on Saturday evening) what’s going to happen, but then that didn’t happen.”

COVID-19-hit Chelsea earn point at foggy Wolves

Chelsea slipped further behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League title race as they were held to a goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The visitors had a request for the fixture to be postponed because of a coronavirus outbreak rejected on Sunday morning – with manager Thomas Tuchel saying they were “a bit angry” with the decision.

Consequently, the Blues named just four outfield players on the bench at Molineux. The first XI was still strong enough to be competitive but they struggled to create as they were held to a second successive draw.

Daniel Podence had an early goal ruled out for offside as Wolves enjoyed the better of the opening period but in foggy conditions chances were few and far between.

Leander Dendoncker’s header just before half-time was comfortably saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, while Wolves counterpart Jose Sa did well to deny Christian Pulisic from close range late on.

The result, coupled with a 4-0 win for Manchester City against Newcastle on Sunday, means Chelsea are six points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Wolves, meanwhile, remain eighth but move level on 25 points with seventh-placed Tottenham.

    EPL: 10-man Brentford defeat Wolverhampton

Brentford claimed their first win on the road in the Premier League with a comfortable victory over Wolves at Molineux.

The newly-promoted London side, who arrived in the west Midlands with an unbeaten away record, took a first-half lead with a well-struck Ivan Toney penalty.

The Bees forward then turned provider to shrug off the challenge of Max Kilman and find strike partner Bryan Mbeumo at the back post for his first top-flight goal.

Wolves have failed to score in their opening three league defeats at home, and they did not register a shot on target in the west Midlands sunshine, despite having more possession.

Adama Traore’s physicality and speed was a constant threat, and substitute Hwang Hee-chan impressed again on only his second appearance, but manager Bruno Lage will be concerned by his side’s lack of cutting edge.

The only negative for Brentford was the loss of Shandon Baptiste for a needless second yellow card, five minutes after his first, after he hauled down Francisco Trincao after losing possession.

Thomas Frank’s side climb to ninth in the table and face high-flying Liverpool in their next league outing, while Wolves slip to 14th with a trip to Southampton to follow.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence was felt as Manchester United beat Wolves in their first game since announcing they had reached an agreement to re-sign the forward.

Ronaldo was not at Molineux but United’s travelling fans sang his name, with United expected to confirm the arrival of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner from Juventus in the coming days for £12.8m.

On the pitch, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were second-best to a lively Wolves for long periods before Mason Greenwood scored a contentious late winner.

Wolves felt Ruben Neves was fouled in the build-up but the goal was allowed to stand.

Wolves could have been 3-0 up inside 15 minutes, with Raul Jimenez forcing David de Gea into an early save, Aaron Wan-Bissaka making a goal-saving block to deny Trincao and Joao Moutinho volleying over after a mistake by Jadon Sancho.

United were second best for long periods and it required a spectacular double save by De Gea from Romain Saiss to prevent Wolves from taking the lead before Greenwood’s finish.

Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio is a step closer to signing for AS Roma.

Roma sports chief Tiago Pinto is in advanced talks to ferry the Portugal No1 away from Molineux.

Sky Italia says Patricio has reached an agreement over terms with Roma.

The 33 year-old has made it clear he wants to make the move and now Roma need to strike a price with Wolves.

Roma have offered €8m, while Wolves are demanding €15m to sell.

Being linked with Chelsea a great joy – Traore

Wolves winger Adama Traore insists he’s not been unsettled by talk of interest from Chelsea.

Adama is now with Spain preparing for the Euros and was asked about rumours of Champions League winners Chelsea being keen.

He said, “I am focused on defending the shirt of Spain, which is the country where I was born and the one I love.

“I have a contract and we’ll see what happens. My mentality is to compete and give everything. That they link your name with the great teams is a joy, but I have not spoken with my agent and the most important thing is to recover.

“When the Euros ends we will see what is real and what is not. It is good that people talk about me, but I am focused on Spain.”

What Salah said after I dived against Liverpool – Wolves defender

Wolves defender Conor Coady has revealed he was rapped by Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah for diving earlier this season.

Coady, a former Reds defender, was caught up in simulation controversy when he went to ground and Wolves were awarded a penalty on their Premier League visit to Liverpool in December, with the decision by referee Craig Pawson overturned by VAR.

“I got some serious stick for that!” he said, speaking on the Greatest Game podcast.

“As the ball comes in, you know when you’re thinking someone is going to touch you, as I’m thinking that he (Mane) is going to touch me, he never, he moved his foot (away) dead quick.

“So I go down and I was hoping that the referee wouldn’t blow his whistle.

“The next minute, the whistle goes and I just put my head down into the turf and thought ‘oh for f**** sake’.

“So I’m thinking they’re obviously going to see it on VAR. I’m walking back and all the Liverpool players are giving me stick, I just put my head down and walked back.

“I remember as I’m walking back Salah, of all people, said to me ‘you can’t do that, my friend’. I didn’t even appeal about it.

“My family gave me a bit of stick and said ‘what are you doing?!?’ I looked stupid.”
