Chelsea’s Abraham hits hat-trick in win over Wolves

Tammy Abraham scored a brilliant hat-trick – and an own goal – as Chelsea destroyed Wolves at Molineux.

The England forward scored twice in the space of seven first-half minutes after Fikayo Tomori – another 21-year-old – had opened the scoring with a stunning 25-yard finish.

Abraham, who spent last season on loan in the Championship with Aston Villa, doubled the lead with a shot on the turn after referee Graham Scott had played an advantage following Conor Coady’s foul on Mason Mount.

Wolves, who remain without a top-flight win this season, fell further behind when Abraham headed home, before the Chelsea striker made it 4-0 with a superb finish after beating Coady – a seventh league goal of the season that took him to the top of the scoring charts.

In an eventful game, Abraham then scored an own goal as Romain Saiss’ header struck his right hand before crossing the line, before Patrick Cutrone added a second Wolves goal from close range.

Mason Mount, 20, added Chelsea’s fifth goal with virtually the last kick of the game.

  • EPL: Chelsea’s Kante out as Rudiger returns against Wolves

EPL: Chelsea’s Kante out as Rudiger returns against Wolves

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante will miss the Blues trip to Wolves on Saturday and remains a doubt for matches against Valencia and Liverpool next week.

Kante missed both of France’s fixtures during the international break with an ankle injury and a return against Wolves is “too soon”, manager Frank Lampard confirmed on Friday.

Chelsea play Valencia in their opening Champions League match on Tuesday, before hosting Liverpool next Sunday.

“I don’t want to jump the gun because we’re waiting for improvement to fill that final step to get him to where we want him to be on the pitch again,” Lampard said. “But hopefully that will be in a week or so.”

Mateo Kovacic (Achilles) and Pedro (hamstring) are fit to play against Wolves, while Antonio Rudiger will be available after recovering from a knee injury that ended last season prematurely for the defender.

Chelsea have conceded nine goals in their four Premier League matches this season, with only Norwich having a worse record.

“It’s a choice for myself, but he will have an important role,” said Lampard, when asked if Rudiger would go straight into Chelsea’s defence. “We have missed him as we have with a few more front-line players.

“I don’t want a young team for the sake of it. He can be influential. He is ready to take on those roles.”

EPL: Ruthless Wolves dent Arsenal top-four hopes

Arsenal missed the chance to go fourth in the Premier League as they were outplayed by Wolves at Molineux.

Ruben Neves put the hosts ahead with a direct free-kick from 25 yards before Matt Doherty headed in a second.

Diogo Jota added a third just before half-time after the Gunners gave the ball away and he ran at the away defence before firing a shot under goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Arsenal defender Sokratis headed in from Granit Xhaka’s corner in the 80th minute but it was not enough for the Gunners.

The victory takes Wolves up from 10th to seventh, while Arsenal remain fifth, one point adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea and four behind north London rivals Tottenham.

With three games left of the season, Wolves are in contention to qualify for Europe.

If Manchester City beat Watford in the FA Cup final the team finishing seventh in the Premier League will take the last available European spot and enter next season’s Europa League at the second qualifying round phase.

  • EPL: Hungry Wolves stop Man Utd again

EPL: Hungry Wolves stop Man Utd again

Wolverhampton Wanderers repeated their 2018/2019 FA Cup defeat of Manchester United as a Chris Smalling own goal gave them another 2-1 win in a pulsating English Premier League game on Tuesday.

In spite of the distraction of next week’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final against FC Barcelona, Manchester United came out strongly for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second game as permanent manager.

Romelu Lukaku missed an early point-blank header, before Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay swept a low 13th minute shot from outside the box past Rui Patricio to make it 1-0.

Undaunted and fielding a strong team in spite of their own distraction of an FA Cup semi-final against Watford on Sunday, Wolves quickly settled on a cold night at Molineux.

They soon began creating chances of their own.

Portuguese striker Diogo Jota hit a deserved equaliser from close range in the 25th minute, after a nervy-looking Fred had lost control and Raul Jimenez threaded the ball into the area.

Manchester United went down to 10 men in the 57th minute when right back Ashley Young was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless hack on Jota.

That enabled Wolves to pour forward, and in the 77th minute they got the winner thanks to a Smalling own goal after a scramble near the line.

The result left Manchester United fifth on the table on 61 points, level with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur who have played a game fewer.

Wolves are seventh on 47 points.

  • Wolves end Man United’s FA Cup dream

Wolves end Man United’s FA Cup dream

Wolves defeated Manchester United 2-1 at Molineux on Saturday to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1998.

It was a brilliant display from Nuno Espirito Santo’s team, who stepped up their intensity in the second half with Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota grabbing the all-important goals in 70th and 76th minute respectively.

Marcus Rashford scored (90+5) what was barely a consolation for a lacklustre United, who have now suffered two straight defeats under Ole Gunnar Solksjear.

VAR was in use and overturned a red card to Victor Lindelof (80) after a crunching tackle on Jota by the touchline.

Wolves are now dreaming of winning their first silverware since 1980 with Watford, Manchester City and one of Millwall and Brighton awaiting them in the semi-finals.

The visitors dominated possession in the early stages without hurting the hosts – a pattern which bore out during a dull opening 45 minutes.

Wolves defeat Leicester in seven-goal thriller

Diogo Jota completed a hat-trick in injury time to snatch a thrilling victory for Wolves, who punished a dire Leicester defensive display to increase the pressure on Foxes boss Claude Puel.

A dramatic climax at Molineux produced scenes of stark contrast – with Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo being sent to the stands for racing to celebrate the winner with his players, as Puel put his hands over his face to show the strain of defeat.

Leicester attempted to play offside in the final added minute and Jota was left unmarked to turn in a Raul Jimenez cross, moving his side to eighth in the Premier League table, a place above their opponents.

The Portuguese forward had opened the scoring by prodding home at the back post, with Ryan Bennett heading a second to prompt chants of “sacked in the morning” being aimed at Puel.

Clearly angry in the opening 45 minutes, the Leicester boss saw his side hit back within six minutes of the restart – first through Demarai Gray’s solo run and finish, and then a Conor Coady own goal.

But after digging themselves out of trouble, Leicester’s defence was again undone by a Ruben Neves long ball for Jota to power in his second, only for Wes Morgan to head a late equaliser which appeared to have earned them a point that had seemed so unlikely for much of the game.

Wolves, who beat Leicester 4-3 the last time this fixture was played in the top flight at Molineux in 2003, had other ideas and, in a chaotic finish, Jota won it with Leicester again a mess at the back.

  • FA Cup: Why Wolves defeated Liverpool – Klopp

FA Cup: Why Wolves defeated Liverpool – Klopp

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has disclosed why his side were defeated 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night in the FA Cup encounter.

Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves ensured Wolves defeated the Reds at Molineux Stadium.

However, Divock Origi did score for the Premier League leaders.

Klopp said Liverpool were defeated by Wolves because some of his players were sick.

Klopp was quoted by Goal as saying at post-match: “After the Man City game, we had immediately a few players who were ill, who showed [a] soar throat and what you can have in this period of the year. So, they were not even in after the City game.

“Pretty much all the players who were not here today had flu problems – apart from Ali [Alisson]. And so we had late changes. Like yesterday Adam [Lallana] was in our plans, Hendo [Jordan Henderson] was in our plans and Dejan was not in our plans, he should only have been on the bench. It happens, what happened. That doesn’t help a lot and we have to change again.

“We wanted to control the game because we were completely new, especially defensively completely new, so it makes sense to keep the ball.”

The defeat to Wolves means Liverpool are now out of the FA Cup.

  • Stunning Neves strike dumps Liverpool out of FA Cup

Stunning Neves strike dumps Liverpool out of FA Cup

Ruben Neves’ superb second-half strike sent Wolves through to the FA Cup fourth round at the expense of a Liverpool side that featured three teenagers making their full debuts.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made nine changes to his starting XI, which included 17-year-old midfielder Curtis Jones and 18-year-old Rafael Camacho, BBC reports.

They were joined by Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever – at 16, the club’s third youngest debutant – in the sixth minute following an injury to Dejan Lovren.

Wolves found it difficult to trouble the inexperienced backline until the 38th minute when Raul Jimenez fired them ahead following an error by midfielder James Milner.

Divock Origi levelled for the visitors six minutes after the break with the side’s first effort on target, when he fired a brilliant strike through the legs of Leander Dendoncker and past goalkeeper John Ruddy.

But that parity lasted four minutes as Neves launched a venomous dipping shot from 31 yards that beat Simon Mignolet at his near post.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s free-kick, magnificently pushed on to the post by John Ruddy, was the Reds’ only other effort of note.

Wolves, who knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup for the second time in three seasons, will be away to the winners of the tie between Stoke and Shrewsbury in the fourth round.

  • EPL: Wolves comeback to beat Tottenham at Wembley

EPL: Wolves comeback to beat Tottenham at Wembley

Wolves came from a goal down to stun Tottenham 3-1 at Wembley in a Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Harry Kane opened the scoring with a solo effort in the 22nd minute of the game with a powerful left-footed strike across goalkeeper Rui Patricio and into the far corner from 25 yards.

But the hosts became sloppy after half-time and Wolves built momentum, equalising in the 72nd when Willy Boly powered in a header following a corner.

Raul Jimenez’s weak effort from the edge of the area beat Hugo Lloris to put Wolves in front before Helder Costa added a third on the counter-attack three minutes from time.

Spurs remain second in the table but leaders Liverpool could go nine points clear as they face Arsenal.

  • Salah, Van Dijk score as Liverpool beat Wolves to stay four points clear

Salah, Van Dijk score as Liverpool beat Wolves to stay four points clear

Liverpool will spend Christmas on top of the English Premier League after goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk earned them a 2-0 win at Wolves on Friday.

The victory helped them to open up a four-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.

Manchester City can reduce that gap back to a point with a win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Saturday.

But Juergen Klopp’s side will still enjoy their Christmas dinner perched in first place.

In driving rain, on a foul night at Molineux, Wolves began brightly, the promoted side showing why they are in seventh place.

Moroccan midfielder Romain Saiss forced Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker into an early save.

But Liverpool grabbed the lead in the 18th minute with a beautifully-worked goal.

After a clever exchange with Sadio Mane, Brazilian midfielder Fabinho’s pull-back was exquisitely turned in off the outside of his foot by Salah.

Jonny and Matt Doherty both tested Alisson before the break, suggesting that Wolves were still very much in the game.

But it was the visitors who extended their lead in the 68th minute.

Salah drifted a ball into the box towards Van Dijk and the towering Dutch defender calmly slotted past Rui Patricio from close range.

That killed off Wolves, although substitute Morgan Gibbs-White should have scored near the end after a slip-up from Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.
