Brake failure crash kills woman in Ikorodu

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says a woman died after two iron-rod-laden Iveco trucks collided in Ita Oluwo, Ikorodu.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos.

He said the woman, trapped between the articulated trucks, was extricated with help from LASTMA and Lagos Fire and Rescue Service officials.

Others who assisted include the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) and officers from the Nigeria Police Force.

Bakare-Oki said officers from Ogijo Police Division evacuated the victim and took her to the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Sagamu.

He said the crash caused serious injuries, wrecked vehicles, and prompted a swift response by emergency services at the scene.

“Preliminary findings by LASTMA revealed that the accident resulted from brake failure on one of the trucks, YA 701 AAA, which was reportedly speeding.

“The out-of-control vehicle rammed into another truck on the same route, triggering a high-impact collision.

The force of the crash severely mangled both vehicles and sparked panic among road users and local residents,” he said.

Bakare-Oki offered condolences to the victim’s family, calling the crash a grim reminder of dangers linked to vehicle faults and driver recklessness.

“This tragic event underscores the pressing need for strict adherence to road safety measures, especially among operators of heavy-duty and cargo-laden trucks,” he said.

He lamented that avoidable incidents like this persist due to mechanical neglect and careless speeding by operators.

He affirmed the Lagos Government’s commitment to enforcing road safety laws, especially in cases where public safety is threatened by negligence.

Bakare-Oki urged haulage companies to enforce regular mechanical checks and ensure drivers are certified and mentally fit before handling freight vehicles.

“Roadworthiness is not optional but a duty for anyone operating high-risk transport vehicles,” he said.

SAD! One woman, girl k!lled every 10 minutes worldwide – UN Women

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 25, the report Femicides in 2023: Global Estimates of Intimate Partner/Family Member Femicides by UN Women and UNODC reveals that femicide—the most extreme form of violence against women and girls—remains pervasive in the world.

Globally, 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023. 60 per cent of these homicides -51,000- were committed by an intimate partner or other family member. 140 women and girls die every day at the hands of their partner or a close relative, which means one woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes.

In 2023, Africa recorded the highest rates of intimate partner and family-related femicide, followed by the Americas and then by Oceania. In Europe and the Americas, most women killed in the domestic sphere (64 per cent and 58 per cent, respectively) were victims of intimate partners, while elsewhere, family members were the primary perpetrators.

“Violence against women and girls is not inevitable—it is preventable. We need robust legislation, improved data collection, greater government accountability, a zero-tolerance culture, and increased funding for women’s rights organizations and institutional bodies. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 2025, it is time for world leaders to UNiTE and act with urgency, recommit, and channel the resources needed to end this crisis once and for all”, highlighted UN Women Executive Director, Sima Bahous.

“The new femicide report highlights the urgent need for strong criminal justice systems that hold perpetrators accountable, while ensuring adequate support for survivors, including access to safe and transparent reporting mechanisms,” said Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC. “At the same time, we must confront and dismantle the gender biases, power imbalances, and harmful norms that perpetuate violence against women. As this year’s 16 Days of Activism Campaign begins, we must act now to protect women’s lives.”

The 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action in 2025, coupled with the fast-approaching five-year deadline to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, presents a critical opportunity to rally all stakeholders to take decisive and urgent action for women’s rights and gender equality. This includes ending impunity and preventing all forms of violence against women and girls.

The incident, which occurred on an 18-seater commuter bus with registration number BGT 996 LG, left 12 other passengers with severe burns.

Confirming the incident, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Muta’ah Chorrie, attributed the tragedy to the driver’s negligence.

According to Chorrie, the driver had stored a jerrican filled with fuel in the bus alongside passengers, which likely contributed to the fire.

He said, “Let me tell you, this is what we have been saying that there is danger in carrying extra fuel with passengers while traveling. We have been sensitizing motorists on this but some defiant drivers still carry them.’’

The woman told her side of the tale, saying that her husband was so protective of her because of his suspicions that it was almost hard for her to have a normal life.

The Zimbabwean couple publicly voiced their complaints on national television, revealing their personal hardships for all to see.

The woman accused her husband of mistreating her and even suggested that he might have married a supernatural person, which further inflamed the issue.

  • Money ritual gone awry as woman finds maggots in her urine after s$x with son

Money ritual gone awry as woman finds maggots in her urine after s$x with son

A woman, seeking refuge with a pastor, has shared an account of her family’s ordeal stemming from her son’s quest for financial freedom through alleged money rituals.

Aunty Grace, the mother, revealed that her 19-year-old son, who had dropped out of school after junior high, fell in with the wrong crowd and was introduced to an alleged money ritual.

She explained that this ritual has brought severe consequences to their family.

She consequently sought help from Pastor Prince Elisha Osei Kofi during his confession session in a video shared on YouTube.

According to Aunty Grace, her son left home with friends and returned days later with newfound wealth.

“I have a 19-year-old child, and he has a lot of friends, so they have been going out often, and sometimes he doesn’t return for a week or two,” she said.

According to her, her son began to support the family financially, renovating their house and providing food after he returned from his regular trip. However, this sudden change came at a high cost.

She narrated that she noticed a deep sore on her son’s thigh, infested with maggots and despite her inquiries, he refused to explain the cause.

One day, he left and returned two months later with a car. I asked him where he got the car from, and he told me not to be afraid. Then he started buying things for the house, like rice and other provisions.

He left again and returned three months later, wanting to renovate the house, which he did.

“I noticed he started wearing long dresses with a strong smell coming from him. I noticed a strong smell as I got closer to him. Later, I discovered he had a large, deep sore on his thigh with maggots and other insects coming out of it.

“I asked him how it happened, but he couldn’t explain. He had become aggressive sleeping with girls indiscriminately,” she asserted.

She further revealed that eventually, one of his friends disclosed that the sore would only heal if Aunty Grace had sexual relations with her son, as part of the sacrificial demands tied to their source of wealth.

“So, I called his friend, and he told me that I shouldn’t inform anybody about where they went but my son wouldn’t get better unless I slept with him to heal him.

“One day, my son came to me and said he wanted to sleep with me. I had no option but to allow it. After having multiple rounds with him, I realized that the sores were healing, and later, he became completely healed.

She now suffers from a strong stench and passes maggots in her urine, a condition she believes is linked to the ritual.

“So, I slept with him several times and after he was completely healed, I started struggling to urinate.

” When I urinate, I get a foul smell and maggots in my urine. I don’t even know where my son is now.

“When I urinate, I see the maggots that were in his thigh sore in my urine and I am struggling to survive,” she said.

  • Woman diagnosed with rare condition that makes her appear drunk

Woman diagnosed with rare condition that makes her appear drunk

A 50-year-old woman who visited hospital seven times with slurred speech and extreme tiredness, only to be discharged with a diagnosis of being drunk, had a rare condition that gave her the appearance of being intoxicated.

This happened even after saying she had not been drinking.

Called auto-brewery syndrome, the condition sees fungi in the gut create alcohol through fermentation.

Researchers say awareness of this syndrome – which has social, legal, and medical consequences – is essential for proper diagnosis and management.

Over two years the woman visited the emergency department complaining of extreme daytime sleepiness and slurred speech.

She had been on several antibiotic courses for recurrent urinary tract infections alongside a proton pump inhibitor to reduce the amount of acid in her stomach.

Despite not drinking alcohol, she also had elevated blood alcohol levels and alcohol on her breath.

After each hospital visit the woman was discharged with the diagnosis of alcohol intoxication, despite her reports of no alcohol intake, which her family confirmed.

The patient needed up to two weeks off work after each episode and during this time she ate very little.

Her symptoms would improve after one to two weeks but would return every one to two months.

On the third visit, the mother was even certificated under the Mental Health Act, as the doctor had concerns about self-neglect when she discharged herself before psychiatric assessment.

However, on her seventh visit the emergency doctor considered a diagnosis of auto-brewery syndrome, and after being prescribed some medication, she was referred to a specialist.

A dietitian suggested a low-carbohydrate diet, and after completing a one-month course of antifungal medication and the diet, the woman’s symptoms went away and remained absent for four months.

The woman slowly started to eat carbohydrates again, but one month after doing this she had a recurrence of slurred speech and drowsiness, which led to a fall.

She was advised to restart the low-carbohydrate diet again, and her symptoms resolved.

Writing in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Dr Rahel Zewude, University of Toronto, and her co-authors, said: “Auto-brewery syndrome carries substantial social, legal, and medical consequences for patients and their loved ones.

“Our patient had several (emergency department) visits was assessed by internists and psychiatrists, and was certified under the Mental Health Act before receiving a diagnosis of the auto-brewery syndrome, reinforcing how awareness of this syndrome is essential for clinical diagnosis and management.”
