Kano Government speaks on plans to stop women from driving

The Kano State Government has denied plans to ban women from driving automobiles, amid reports trending on social media.

Some yet-to be verified reports claimed that the state government in collaboration with the state’s Council of Ulama have concluded plans to send the bill prohibiting women from driving, to the House of Assembly.

But making the clarification via a statement issued on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, said the government had at no time contemplated on such a matter.

Garba dismissed the report, saying it cannot be traced to any credible news platform.

“The trending story lacks any credibility and that is why it is wholly attributed to a source that cannot be substantiated,” the commissioner said.

According to him, the report which could not be traced to any credible source, was nothing but the imaginary thinking of the authors.

Garba noted that Saudi Arabia which had for decades restricted women from driving, lifted the ban in 2018.

See the full statement issued by the Commissioner below:

Kano rebuts trending story on women driving ban

Kano state government has described as fallacious a trending story on social media platforms on a purported plan to officially disallow women regardless of any faith from getting behind the wheel.

The state commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba who made the clarification in a statement issued on Thursday, said government had at no time contemplate on the matter.

He said the story, which could not be traced to any credible source, was nothing but the imaginary thinking of the authors.

“The trending story lacks any credibility and that is why it is wholly attributed to a source that cannot be substantiated,’’ it added.

Malam Garba pointed out that if at all there was such plan, the state government does not have to be involved in any secretive meeting to decide on a critical issue that has to do its teeming populace.

The commissioner stated further that even Saudi Arabia which for decades had laws that sanctioned women from driving has, after all, lifted the ban in 2018.

He said it was interesting that some of the scholars quoted to have supported the alleged ban have already dissociated themselves from the story.

Team Nigeria women’s 4x400m relay team have qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after racing to a 3:26.84 African lead time at the Lagos Open Athletics Championship at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The 4x400m team have become the second Nigerian relay team to qualify after the women’s 4x100m team led by Blessing Okagbare secured their spot at the games with a 42.97 seconds run at the National Championships (Olympic Trials) last week Thursday at the sports ground of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

The quartet of Imaobong Nse Uko, NCAA 200m finalist Favour Ofili, Knowledge Omovoh, and Okon-George is now ranked 13th in the ranking for the best 16 nations that will be in Tokyo ahead of Belarus (3:28.14), Australia (3:28.64) and Switzerland (3:28.77) who have all provisionally qualified.

  • Court convicts two Nigerian women for running prostitution ring in Ireland

Court convicts two Nigerian women for running prostitution ring in Ireland

Two women who ran a prostitution ring from a base in Mullingar have been found guilty of human trafficking offences in what is believed to be the first conviction of its type in Ireland.

According to a report by Ireland based Westmeathindependent.com, Alicia Edosa (44) and Edith Enoghaghase (31) were each found guilty on two counts of trafficking women into Ireland on dates between September 2016 and June 2018 contrary to the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act 2008 following a six-week jury trial at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court.

The jury of ten men and two women found Edosa not guilty on two other counts of human trafficking.

Edosa of The Harbour, Market Point, Mullingar, Co Westmeath and Enoghaghase of Meeting House Lane, Mullingar were also each convicted of a single offence of organising prostitution as well as a series of money laundering offences.

Enoghaghase’s husband, Omonuwa Desmond Osaighbovo (30) was found not guilty of a single charge of prostitution but guilty of four money laundering offences.

All three were found not guilty of the commission of an offence for a criminal organisation contrary to the Criminal Justice Act 2006.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to a total of 63 separate offences.

The trial heard evidence from four women who claimed they were forced into prostitution in Ireland after undergoing a voodoo ceremony in their native Nigeria in what the prosecution claimed was a “tragic” case of exploitation.

The victims, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, provided dramatic evidence of long, harrowing journeys from their homeland via north Africa and southern Europe before arriving in Ireland.

Counsel for the defendants had claimed the victims in the case had made false human trafficking allegations against the accused in order to secure their rights to remain in Ireland.

The victims also rejected claims that they had voluntarily decided to work as prostitutes.

One witness gave evidence that she was trafficked into Ireland on a promise by Edosa of earning up to €3,500 per month by working as a shop assistant but was forced into prostitution within days of arriving in Ireland which had been described to her as “the land of milk and honey”.

The 26-year-old mother of one said she had felt betrayed by Edosa who had arranged her travel from Nigeria to Ireland via Libya and Italy.

She recounted how she had been raped in Tripoli and used a false Irish passport to get through immigration at Dublin Airport.

The trial heard that Edosa had kept €44,000 of the woman’s earnings while also threatening to kill her son and entire family back in Nigeria if she did not follow instructions.

“I was like a sex machine and money-making machine for her,” the witness remarked.

She recounted how if she collected €1,000, she was only allowed to keep €10 for herself which sometimes left her starving for days.

The woman told counsel for the DPP, Fiona Murphy SC, that she would never have left Nigeria if she knew that she would end up working as a prostitute in Ireland.

The trial heard the woman worked in various locations around the country including Limerick, Cork, Galway, Castlebar, Navan, Athlone, Letterkenny, Cavan and Dundalk.

Judge Francis Comerford remanded Edosa and Enoghaghase in custody until a sentencing hearing later this year when victim impact statements will also be heard.

The judge granted an application by Osaighbovo for bail conditions to be extended for the father of three despite an objection by gardaí who said there was a concern he would abscond from the jurisdiction before his next court appearance.

Outside the courthouse, Supt Dermot Drea, who led the investigation into human trafficking, expressed hope that the first convictions for the offence under the 2008 legislation would encourage other victims and people with information on the crime to come forward to gardaí.

“The actions of those convicted are all about making money regardless of the consequences of the victims,” said Supt Drea,

He praised the bravery and perseverance of the victims in what he described as “a lengthy and complex investigation.”

  • Abubakar Shekau: Untold story of how ISWAP recruited over 300 Libya-trained women, teenagers to ‘bring down’ Boko Haram’s strongman

Abubakar Shekau: Untold story of how ISWAP recruited over 300 Libya-trained women, teenagers to ‘bring down’ Boko Haram’s strongman

More information have emerged on how Boko Haram strongman, Abubakar Shekau was attacked and killed by 300 fighters loyal to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to reports, the fighters trained in Libya and other countries joined their colleagues in a long battle that led to the final fall of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau on Wednesday.

According to a report by Daily Trust, a fierce battle that lasted several days between the two factions led to the death of dozens of vicious commanders and hundreds of foot soldiers from both sides, with multiple sources saying Shekau has killed himself or fatally injured himself to the extent that he might not survive.

It was gathered that most of the fighters that fought for the defeat of Shekau on Wednesday were aged between 12 and 30.

“They are actually children of some ISWAP members killed over time,” a security source said.

According to him, “Others are youths sourced during raids on multiple islands around the Lake Chad. The ISWAP carefully selected the youths. It was therefore much easier for recruitment as some of the youths willingly joined the group and others were forcefully conscripted.

“Some of them were born during the wartime and others were very young when their parents joined the group around 2002. After their parents died because of illness or confrontation with Nigerian troops, the children naturally took over and when the group split into two in 2016, those that moved on their own or forcefully taken to the shores of Lake Chad under the umbrella of ISWAP had an upper hand in terms of training because they were taken to Libya for training in guerrilla warfare and other purposes.

“Others were sent to Syria and Somalia… They were taken to many countries abroad for training. However, those that came back especially between March and April this year took an active part in confronting Shekau in the last few days. They launched a serious offensive alongside other top commanders and fighters already on ground and they succeeded in taking over,” he said.

Another credible source said some of the 300 youths were trained as “medical doctors, paramedics, engineers, IT specialists, bomb specialists and mechanics.”

He added that among them were women “who serve as nurses or cooks while others have gun-handling skills, meaning they can partake in combat operations.”

He said after their return from abroad, they were camped at a village called Shuwaram in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

  • ‘Chasing’ is Love Language Women Enjoy to Hear, By Michael West

‘Chasing’ is Love Language Women Enjoy to Hear, By Michael West

    By Michael West

It is not surprising that last week’s topic generated so many reactions such that BECKY OLORUNPOMI, a certified relationship & marriage counsellor, author, conference speaker and convener of an annual Singles’ Summit, decided to deepen the topic in her elaborate response. Love language, she argues, is what the ‘chasing’ all about. Please read on:

In his column of May 14, 2021, Michael West, in a piece entitled: “Why Do Men Stop ‘Chasing’ in Relationship?” addressed an issue that often generate suspicion and tension in relationships. Reading the article, I, being a woman, came up with some perspectives to the topic; and that was what necessitated this contribution.

The issue of men not continuing the ‘chasing’ once the relationship is established has been a contentious issue with various reasons adduced. Women love to be chased and still expect their men to continue chasing them even after the relationship has been established. They, however, get disenchanted when it is not happening. Men, on their part, do not see the need for further chasing since the purpose for the chase has been achieved.

To an average man, it’s senseless to continue chasing when he’s gotten the game of his hunting. But a woman doesn’t understand why there should be a stop to the regular calls and showering of love from her man just because she has yielded to his overtures. These divergent views are a reason for psychological distance and emotional yearning for continuity in relationship and even in marriage.

The truth about relationship is that both genders desire to be loved and appreciated. However, expressing love language differs and it is based on individual’s nature and nurture. Personality, temperament, upbringing and exposures affect the way we accept and express love. These variables also affect the way we communicate our love languages which have been categorised by Gary Chapman, author of “The 5 Love Languages” into: Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Physical Touching, and Receiving and Giving of Gifts. The strategies a man applies is an indirect love language spoken in wooing his woman. He might have used the same or even better strategies on another woman without success. It’s like a man in a foreign land where people communicate with him in the foreign language which he understands but nobody speaks his own native language. If he suddenly meets someone who speaks his language, there would be immediate connection and attraction for friendship. However, the promising relationship may be threatened if the friend stops communicating with him in the valued native language. Nobody likes to experience such a communication “breakdown.”

So, what women apparently mean by ‘chasing’ them even after the relationship has been established is the nurturing of the relationship which is the romantic language their emotions understand and desire, and not ‘chasing’ like men think. Those love languages are needed and vital in keeping the marriage going. The work or responsibility of wooing a woman doesn’t end when she consents, in fact, that’s when it begins. There has to be love languages spoken in relationship to further nurture it to a lasting union.

I learnt of a newly wedded couple where the wife mildly accused her husband of not loving her any longer just six months into their marriage. The man, confused about the wrong accusation, asked what the problem was. She told him he had stopped telling her, “I love you” since they got married. The shocked man responded, “But I told you in front of everybody six months ago that I loved you. If I have changed my mind, I would have told you.” Many men get bewildered by some of their wives’ complaints or accusations of not loving them after they’ve started a relationship or solemnised it. To him, his commitment to his wife and marriage must not necessarily be verbally communicated. But to the woman, especially if her love language is words of affirmation, she needs and would desire to keep hearing those words of affirmation if possible on daily or hourly basis. A number of men don’t know there’s something called ‘love language’ or they are not interested in knowing or speaking it. I have taught this subject on a number of platforms and gatherings, both online and offline, to arrive at this conclusion.

The recent online testament of Bankole Wellington (Banky W) and his wife, Adesuwa, on their journey to parenthood also buttresses this position. The couple narrated how, at a point in their marriage, there was a tension which almost resulted to physical stonewalling until it was resolved. And it’s about this love language. According to Banky W, being a typical African man, he didn’t see the importance in speaking any love language despite Adesuwa’s efforts to let him know. The issue was raised again and taught during their pre-marital counselling and both were exposed to each other’s love languages which were Quality time (for Adesuwa) and Acts of service (for Banky W), it still didn’t register until it became a major issue in the marriage safe for divine intervention which brought about a peaceful change.

I also had an interaction with a senior male colleague who told me how he disliked his wife’s attitude of not giving him attention especially when he needed her. I told him that’s a love language called ‘quality time’ but he said he wouldn’t like to admit it as a love language even though he knows it is. Like Michael West pointed in his article, a man who has successfully plucked a mango fruit, in as much as he needs no more throwing of stones at the tree, would take a step further by washing and preparing it for consumption. This is a nurturing of the relationship. This mostly includes speaking her love language (and vice versa).

Sending love messages to your spouse or affirming them with positive words may be a sign that their love language is words of affirmation and this could be the chasing she is talking about. I think most ladies have this as their love language because it’s being said that Women are moved by what they hear. Some other women’s love language is quality time where they appreciate full and undivided attention from their men during conversations. Some men, like my colleague, may also have this love language though they may not apply it. For example, “physical touch,” “physical receiving or accepting gifts” and “acts of service” are all ways of speaking the love languages of one’s partner irrespective of the stage their relationship is. This is to keep the relationship moving.

Worthy of note is the fact that it is not a bad thing to have different love languages from one’s partner or spouse. It only shows they are wired differently and interpret love differently. They only need to learn each other’s language and speak it. This is where understanding and maturity come in. The truth is, understanding your love language and especially your partner’s is a gradual and continual process.

Marriage is a beautiful union with great benefits but it entails responsibilities which include effective communication with love language being a tool. This, for the umpteenth time, is not the sole responsibility of the man or the woman but both. This will help reduce stress or suspicion.

In conclusion, couples need to keep making their relationships romantic and lovely, not only with sex and hangouts but by speaking your spouse’s love language. Keep learning and speaking until you can master it. This, I believe, is the “chasing” she is talking about.

It’s okay for women to initiate sex-Destiny Amaka

Media personality and actress, Destiny Amaka has averred that it is okay for women to demand sex from men.

According to her: ”Ladies, it’s okay to initiate sex with your partner. A real man won’t think any less of you if you do. In fact, men like women who know what they want and go for it. Just keep it classy and sexy when demanding sex. You can also be nasty if that is how you feel. Express yourself, ladies. However, also make sure you are in an honest commitment and always have safe sex”, she told The Sun.

Speaking further, the beautiful role interpreter said morning is the best time to have sex.

“Another quick tip; morning is the perfect time for sex. This is because, quite frankly, your body is ready for it.”

While reacting to the disturbing rate of rape in Nigeria, the star of Doll House says though, she’s been fortunate not to have fallen a victim, some women around her have been raped.

“I’ve been fortunate enough not to have experienced rape, but I have women close to me who have. If you’re a victim, speak out but be sure to make peace with yourself, accept it and know that it is not your fault. Once you can stop blaming yourself, it’s easier to stand your ground if no one believes you,” she said.

Women liked me because I was good in bed – Mr Ibu

Comic actor, John Okafor a.k.a Mr Ibu has stated that he doesn’t cheat on his wife. The funnyman made this known in a chat with Punch.

According to him: “I don’t cheat on my wife. I had children before I married her. I left that life because many women wanted to have children for me but I cannot build a primary school in my house. They liked me because I was good in bed and I’m really grateful for that. I knew what they wanted so I was always very gentle with them. Women are attracted to me but I’m only interested in my wife. My wife is as beautiful as I met her, even after four children.”

Speaking further, Ibu noted that he can abstain from sex for two years, adding that he is not sex-crazed.

“I am not sex-crazed at all. I can abstain for two years. When I had a problem, I stayed off sex for a long time. I am not controlled by sex. As of now, I have stayed off sex for at least four months. Remember that I was poisoned in December 2020, so I need to recuperate before engaging in such acts. My wife is also missing me. It was not easy for her. She was crying every minute because she genuinely loves me.

“Some people have said that people with potbellies are not good lovers or sexually active but being good on the bed is relative. My answer to this is that I have 13 children (10 boys and two girls) though I lost one of them. That is the evidence of my sexual virility. I hatch children like pigeons.”

  • PMB reiterates commitment to women development

PMB reiterates commitment to women development

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his administration commitment to advance the cause for women development as a credible force in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

Buhari said this while officially inaugurating in Nigeria the new decade 2020-2030 of African women’s financial and economic inclusion.

The president was represented by Malam Muhammed Bello, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The event was organised in Abuja on Tuesday by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC), in partnership with Dr Rhoda Makinde Initiative (DROMI), an NGO.

Buhari said Nigeria had taken the lead to inaugurate the domestication of women’s decade 2020 to 2030 as a practical demonstration of its commitment to the implementation of regional and international obligation towards the advancement of women.

He said that inequality and poverty were intertwined, adding that this decade would dwell specifically on building strategy around breaking that circle.

“As a government, we remain committed to promoting women’s inclusion in governance and decision making at all levels of the Nigerian economy.

“I wish to reiterate this administration’s commitment to advance cause of Nigeria women, as credible force in strengthening our democracy,” he said.

Buhari promised to tackle poverty, sustain agriculture, promote inclusion of women in democratic agenda, in the bid to address maternal and infant mortality, gender-based violence and all its ramifications.

He said that the government would prioritise education, science and technology, climate change and sustainable development to achieve targets.

“This means that we are leaving no one behind, because when you empower women, you are empowering the family and the society at large.

“The administration will no doubt support the voices of women in the ongoing constitutional amendment processes in Nigeria, which provides unique opportunity to address affirmative action in the appointment of women.

“As we continue to promote Nigerian society where rule of justice and law thrives, I formally join voices of Heads of State to amplify declaration of 2020 to 2030, as new decade of African women in Nigeria,” he added.

The president recalled that AU Heads of State/government had at its 33rd Summit in February 2020 declared 2020-2030 as new decade for women, having implemented 2010 to 2020 as the first women decade.

According to him, the overall goal of the new African women decade is to ensure every woman works, be paid and participate actively in the economy of her country.

“This will involve examining each country’s regulatory, legislative and policy contexts to determine the changes needed.

“To foster the financial inclusion of women and to assist financial institutions on adopting approaches tailored as separate market segments.

“This we have already started as an administration in the milestones we have achieved in promoting the voices of Nigerian women at global levels, as demonstrated by the recent appointment of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-lweala as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation,” the President said.

  • Our women now sleep on trees for safety – Northern Elders

Our women now sleep on trees for safety – Northern Elders

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that the insecurity in the North has gotten to the point where women now sleep on trees for fear of attacks.

The NEF spokesman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, stated this while featuring on Arise News breakfast show monitored in Abuja yesterday.

He said there were villages where women sleep on the trees for safety in the North, a region with a president and 19 governors.

“I laughed because, how many are we enjoying? We have some villages where women have to go and climb trees to stay safe.

“This is not fiction. I’m talking about villages where in the night nobody stays in their houses they leave. For example, villages in Zamfara, Katsina and so many villages in the North, nobody stays home at night just to be safe,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He wondered why it was taking so long for the Buhari administration to tackle insecurity in the country, saying if given the opportunity, he will tell President Muhammadu Buhari that things are falling apart under his watch.

“If I have an opportunity to speak with the president, I will say: ‘Sir, please wake up and smell the coffee, this country is falling apart. It is in very serious danger, it is going down under your watch. You swore in 2015 and again in 2019 that you will protect citizens, the territorial integrity of Nigeria. Sorry, sir, you are not doing that, not doing it well or you are not doing it at all. And one of the things you should do is to call about 200 to 500 Nigerians, without any preconditions, and say: ladies and gentlemen, I believe that this government will benefit from some quality advice in terms of the way forward.’

“Two, take your governors more into confidence, speak to them. They are very important people. They have responsibilities under the constitution and they are able to carry out those responsibilities particularly on matters of security. What do you want? What can we do together? What can I do for you and what can we consider a legitimate idea or a crazy idea?

“Thirdly, please ask real questions about what is going on with the security in this country. Something is wrong. You keep changing things but we see the same result. We are becoming insecure by the day.

“Either it is your attitude as commander-in-chief of the armed forces or the people you trust to defend and protect us. There must be something about the security that you and the people who are fighting this country don’t understand.

“Why are we being so insecure? Why is it not possible for Nigerians to deal with banditry, kidnappings? These things two, three years ago do not exist. Is anybody asking these questions? Is it that you have this harmony in your security agencies? Do you have a way of finding out because we don’t have the time for you to fix this country at your own leisure and the rate you are going, you are too slow and people are smelling a vacuum around your government and this is why you see people saying we don’t want to be part of Nigeria,” Baba-Ahmed added.
