    The Misconception of Feminism

    by Utebor Paul

Feminism earlier identified as a movement has been in existence for a long period in time. It may surprise you to know that most people who claim to be part of this movement, are ignorant of what this movement is all about. The movement of feminism dates back to the 19th century.

Feminism is defined or understood as a movement aimed towards the equal right and legal protection for women, it is concerned with issues of gender difference and advocation for women’s interest in society.

The origin of feminism cannot be categorically targeted to a particular date in history, but have been divided into three waves based on advocations by various women years ago in the course of history.

The first waves of feminism movement focused on the right of women to vote and are dated from the late nineteenth century to 1930s. The second wave of feminism is dated from 1960 to 1980, this wave focused on the issues of discrimination and inequality. It condemned the idea that women can only find fulfilment in training a child and maintaining a home. The third wave of feminism, which began in the 1990s till the present date, seeks to address the failures of the second wave of feminism as well as to address the condemnation of second-wave feminism. The third wave feminism also addresses issues that relate to women’s life on an international basis.

From the history of feminism, you can deduce a bit what the movement stands for, in our present day, they have been a whole lot of misconception that has risen from the word feminism. When someone identifies his or herself as a feminist, the perception we have of that person is wrong. it even beats my imagination that people who identify themselves with the word feminism have little or no idea what the movement is all about.

Firstly, a feminist is not a group of women who cannot find a man or husband. This idea of feminist is common with, majority of African men. They see a woman who is single and not in a relationship as a feminist. Most times they use these words on women they fail to win. The word, when used by these set of men, is more or less a way of mocking such women.

Secondly feminist are not haters of men nor do they promote women to hate men, this is wrong. People tend to see feminist or promoter of feminist ideas as “haters of men”. It is not so, as a matter of fact, they are major promoters of the feminism ideas who are happily married with children. A typical example is the famous writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Lastly, it is pertinent to state that feminist are not angry women neither do feminist prefer to train a child alone, as such they don’t need men in their life. this is a wrong notion about feminism. it is important, for people who intend to identify their selves as feminist to understand what feminism is all about, and what it preaches, so as not to mislead others in seeing the concept of feminism in a wrong light.

Run away from men that want to lure you to bed- Olive Utalor

Budding actress, Olive Utalor has urged women to be careful during this period of self-isolation and social distancing due to coronavirus pandemic.

The svelte role interpreter noted that this moment should be an opportunity for married couples to mend every crack in their relationships, while single ladies should draw closer to God.

Speaking in a chat with The Sun, she said:”This stay-at-home period is actually a blessing for married women, because this is what they have always prayed for, to have their husbands all to themselves. No more hanging out late, no night clubs and parties. A lot of women will be happy to have their husbands around. Marriages would wax stronger during this period, while side chicks will be lonely.

“I want to advise young girls out there to steer clear of any man that wants to lure them to bed with food and constant electricity. You better flee because it is a trap to get pregnant. This (isolation) period is not for sex but to draw closer to God,” she posited.

On how she plans to cope staying lonely at home throughout the isolation period, the single actress noted that she has devised a means to keep herself warm and busy.

“I don’t do sex toys. My bed is wide enough and my fridge is well stocked with foodstuff. All I do is eat, read, sleep and watch movies. It is a period of rest, my dear. This is really end time, so we all have to be careful. I don’t feel bad that I don’t have a man. I have been able to focus my energy on bigger things that are more yielding. A man will definitely come at God’s time. I am not rushing it,” she said.

According to him, the bank also got a N28 billion on-lending line from the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) in 2018 for on-lending to MSMEs playing in critical sectors of the economy.

He said, “As at February 2020, about N18 billion has been disbursed to SMEs on the on-lending line from DBN and an additional N6.8 billion is already approved, awaiting completion of documentation by concerned customers.”

While speaking on Business Structure and Governance for small businesses, Founder, House of Tara International, Tara Fela-Durotoye, expressed concern about the dearth of thriving small businesses in Nigeria. Durotoye blamed the current development in part, on the lack of the requisite knowledge and experience on the part of several entrepreneurs, to the right business models cum structures and accompanying support systems and policies to adopt, to run their businesses successfully and sustainably.

She said, “Entrepreneurs today need to decide on businesses that would outlive them, enough to create an impact wherein by so doing, they are pulling people out of poverty. Only then would the international community stop looking at us as a country that cannot provide jobs for its people.”

On her part, Chief Executive Officer, Linda Ikeji TV, Linda Ikeji, lauded Fidelity Bank Plc for organizing the women empowerment programme, explaining that more Nigerian women need platforms such as this to thrive and scale up their businesses.

It is commendable that Fidelity Bank found it necessary to put something like this together for female entrepreneurs with an invitation to myself and Tara to come in as mentors to them.

“Women need as many platforms like this as we can create and they need to start believing in themselves that they can achieve many things. I am happy that this happened. Another thing I would say is entrepreneurs, especially startups, need to innovate and weave their businesses around what people really need.”

The bank focuses on select niche corporate banking sectors as well as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). • Why women find it difficult to collaborate with one another- Omawunmi

Nigerian songstress and vocalist, Omawunmi has opened up on why women hardly collaborate with one another.

The award winning singer who has spent fifteen years in the Nigerian music industry noted that women are very guarded and finicky with their craft.

In her words: “I can’t speak for everybody, but I think as women we are very guarded and quite finicky with our craft. Sometimes, it boils down to whether you think the next woman would be able to interpret your sound. Outside of that, it also boils down to timing and that sometimes makes it easier to work with the guys.

“It’s a male-dominated industry. To catch attention, people would want to work with the guys – in the past. However, I think things are changing and you will see a lot more collaborations – between women – as we go. I might be speaking for myself, but you will definitely see more collaborations”, she told Pulseng.

Advising young female artistes who desire to break into the industry, she said:” I’ll tell her to keep working and never give up. Most times, it seems like a lot of work to crack it. As women, we have to consider a lot more than the music – we have to consider the looks, our on-stage presence and performance… I would tell her to know what they’re doing and to work on their craft.More importantly, I’d tell her to never leave the studio unless the song is perfect. It’s also important to never put out mediocre music because music are like stamps and they never really go away”.

  • Only 36 Women got elected to Senate since 1999’ – Report

A report by an indigenous nongovernmental organisation, Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), has said the Nigerian Senate has had only 36 women since 1999 when the current democratic dispensation began.

The CITAD report, unveiled at a training for journalists in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, states that the Senate has had 654 members since 1999, meaning that men have had 618 slots to leave 36 to women, giving a percentage of 5.5% women to 94.5% men.

The 654 total number of senators was deduced from Nigeria’s electoral history within the period under review, in which case elections were conducted in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 (six times), each of which time 109 senators were elected.

The report which dug further into the archive, notes that out of the 109 senators elected in 1999, only three were women; while in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019; only 4, 8, 7, 8 and 6 women were elected respectively as senators.

A deeper study would however reveal that the number of specific women would be less than 36 because some women did or have done more than one term at the Senate, including Chief Remi Tinubu, who is doing her third term in the Senate, having first been elected in 2011 and re-elected twice: 2015 and then 2019.

Similarly, the number of men, strictly talking of individuals involved, would be less than 618, as many individuals did or have done more than a term at the Senate, including Sen David Mark, who was first elected into the Senate in 1999 and was reelected repeatedly until he opted out in 2019.

The CITAD report attributed the poor outing of women at the Senate to, among other things, gender-related hate speech which put women at a disadvantage.

The report noted that during the period under review, there was a preponderance of Gender Based Hate Speech with derogative words and phrases used to describe women in politics.

According to the report, terms and refrains like prostitute, ashawo, the weaker vessel, her office is in the kitchen, among others, were freely used, discouraging many women from seeking election or affecting the chances of those who dared to aspire.

The training for journalists at which the report by CITAD was unveiled was on hate speech and what journalists could do to mitigate it.

CITAD which has its head office in Kano, held the media training for journalists in Yola with funding from the National Democratic Institute (NDI), according to a Coordinator with CITAD, Hamza Ibrahim.

Why I avoid fornication- Williams Uchemba

Former child actor and comedian, Williams Uchemba has opened up on why he avoids fornication.

The outspoken entertainer noted that he avoids fornication because it drains his finances.

Speaking in a chat with Broadway TV, he said: ”Fornication drains my finances. Staying away from women is not because I don’t feel like a man when I wake up, it is because of the consequences, it drains my finances. After 10 minutes of sexual pleasure, are you willing to go broke for months?”

Speaking of his greatest achievement, Uchemba said: ”Giving my life to Christ is my greatest achievement because it was the day I realized what life is truly about. That was when I realized that life is not about the money and the cars. I was exposed to these things as a child. The happiness wasn’t there until I realized that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”.

TheNewsGuru recalls that in 2018, Uchemba was accused of being involved in fraud.

Debunking the allegation, he said:” “First of all, I have said it tons of times, ‘Be careful with scammers.’ I have posted a lot of pictures of people using my name to defraud people. I have reported a lot of accounts.

“As a matter of fact, there is a guy on Twitter. I’m not on Twitter; I have never had a Twitter account. He has 15,000 followers posing to be me. His name is Williams Uchemba and a lot of people he has defrauded have called me to say, ‘There is somebody using that (name)’ and I don’t know what to do about that.

“Secondly, let me also state again that I’m the Deputy Nigerian Youth Representative, Youth Assembly at the United Nations, not ‘UN ambassador in the United Nations.’ These are different bodies. The people that organise the youth assembly are the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation.”
