  • Women take sexy selfies to compete, climb social ladder: study

Women take sexy selfies to compete with other women and climb the social ladder in economically unequal environments, new research from an Australian university has found.

A study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal, found women took sexy selfies in environments with greater economic inequality, rather than where they might be oppressed because of their gender.

The researchers analysed more than 68,000 sexualized self-portrait photographs, or “selfies,” posted on social media platforms Instagram and Twitter across 113 countries.

They also looked at where in the world the most selfies were taken.

The researchers found the association between sexy-selfie prevalence and income inequality was directly related, with greater sexualisation in environments where incomes are unequal and people are preoccupied with relative social standing.

“We found no association with gender oppression,” the study said.

“It’s all about how women are competing and why they’re competing,” said the study’s lead author, Khandis Blake from University of New South Wales.

She said women are “more likely to invest time and effort into posting sexy selfies online in places where economic inequality is rising, and not in places where men hold more societal power and gender inequality is rife.”

“Selfie” was the Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year in 2013.

In recent years, especially since the advent of smartphones and social media platforms, the images have become a ubiquitous symbol of the perceived self-obsessiveness of the younger generation.

Researchers in the past have found women take more selfies than men.

The PNAS researchers said income inequality increases competitiveness and status anxiety amongst people at all levels of the social hierarchy, making them sensitive to where they sit on the social ladder and wanting them to do better than others.

“That income inequality is a big predictor of sexy selfies suggests that sexy selfies are a marker of social climbing among women that tracks economic incentives in the local environment,” Blake said.

“Rightly or wrongly, in today’s environment, looking sexy can generate large returns, economically, socially, and personally.”

The researchers found the same pattern of “income inequality” spending in other real world experiences in physical appearance-enhancing areas, like beauty salons and fashion.

“So, when a young woman adjusts her bikini provocatively with her phone at the ready, don’t think of her as vacuous or as a victim,” Blake said.

“Think of her as a strategic player in a complex social and evolutionary game. She’s out to maximize her lot in life, just like everyone.”

  • Japan wins first ever U20 Women World Cup

A very relentless Japanese side overpowered Spain to lift their first ever Under 20 Women’s World Cup, beating Spain 3-1 in France on Friday.

The finals was obviously entertaining for the fans at the Stade de la Rabine, Vannes, as the Europeans held possession early in the first half but their persistent opponent took the lead.

Hinata Miyazawa took the Asians off to a historic start in the 38 minute, displacing defenders and creating a beautiful finish.

Fans were hopeful that the Spanish side would return with a spark in the second half but the Japanese rather held onto a great play.

Saori Takarada advanced in the 57th minute to deliver her fifth goal in six matches via a long shot that left goalkeeper Catalina Coll helpless.

Japan play maker Fuka Nagano, who won the golden ball award at the FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan, scored the third goal eight minutes later.

FC Barcelona forward Candela Andujar’s 71st minute consolation goal was not enough to salvage the situation for the Spaniards as the Asians even created more goal chances up to the final blast of whistle.

Meanwhile, England defeated France via penalties after a 1-1 at regulation time to clinch the bronze medal.

At the medal ceremony, the Golden gloves was presented to Sandy Maciver of England while Spain’s Patricia Guijarro won the golden boot with six goals in the tournament.

Guijarro also won the golden ball award of the tournament, and the fair play award went to Japan.

Japan has now won all titles in the FIFA Women’s event.

In an interview on Friday, the lawyer representing the women, Sam Amadi, confirmed their release, saying they were let off following a directive of the Imo State director of public prosecution.

“Yes, they have been released. The DPP gave a directive for the case against them to be struck out, earlier today and we took it to the magistrate, along with the detained women. The court ordered the immediate release of the women. All them who came to the court were released from there.

“Only about 12 of them who were not in this prison are expected to be released from the Okigwe prison where they are held. The case has also been struck out,” Mr Amadi said.

  • Don’t leave a good man because he is always busy- Alibaba declares

Alibaba, a Nigerian comedian and entrepreneur has urged women not to leave a good man because of his busy schedule.

The revered comedian noted that it’s a core part of a relationship to stay in touch, but also said it all a man needs whenever he is busy is for his woman to be understanding.

Alibaba wrote on Instagram: “I have taught this to many married women, who say their husband is too busy, & several of them listened and snapped out of that, IF HE LOVES YOU, HE WILL FIND TIME TO CALL AND MAKE TIME FOR YOU. Others are just set in their ways. That thought process is one reason many relationships break up, some before it even starts. While I agree that it’s important to be in touch, CONSTANTLY, with your significant other, I also believe that there are times when work really can hold you down & shut down the world. There are other times, when it’s not that you are busy, but you just don’t want any negative energies messing up your already clogged up itinerary.

Citing his own personal example, he said there are times as an MC, he starts working from 4pm and won’t get off work till 12midnight.

Hear him: “The reason a lot of ladies have the belief that you can always find Time is because there is, often times, a guy who has time 24/7. Some could be jobless, have arrived, work for themselves, have light working hours, or even in careers that gives them time to waste. Believe it or not, there are people who can actually be busy for 4 hours straight. I am an MC, I have started working, sometimes, from 4pm and don’t get off till 12 midnight or even later. There are cabin crew members who are airborne for 12 hours or less.

“My Point is, don’t throw away a good man, because he is always busy. Or would you rather one that is always home? Like I said, it’s a core part of relationships to stay in touch, but there are times all YOU NEED IS UNDERSTANDING. I have a friend whose babe starts calling him from 4:30pm. Where are you? Are you still on the road? Why didn’t you pick your call? Are you sure you are at work? Are you not supposed to have closed? Can you video call me? Blah blah blah. Then he met one who doesn’t stress him. She will leave messages. How was your day? Hope the work load is not too much? You have been so busy, try and get a massage this weekend. Should I send you lunch? Should my driver bring you orange juice? Once you give a guy the impression that you are not concerned about his career, you are on a long thing”

  • Democracy Day: Delta Govt. creates jobs for additional 1450 youths, women

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta said on Tuesday that the state government provided jobs for 1,450 youths and women in the 4th circle of his administration’s job creation programme.

Okowa who stated this at a thanksgiving service marking the Democracy Day in Asaba, said that his administration placed high premium on job creation to ensure economic growth in the state.

He said that over 500 persons suffering from cataracts in eight Local Government Areas in the state had had their sight restored through his wife’s pet programme, “05 Initiative.”

“More persons will still be attended to when the “05 Initiative” extends its programme to the remaining 17 local government areas.

“On June 5, we shall be commissioning the Sapele Market and the completed dualised Jesse road projects which were initiated by the administration of Chief James Ibori,” he said.

He said that the reconstruction work in the Asaba Airport runway had been completed and could be ranked among the best in the country.

The governor said that the airport had been reopened to traffic while other ancillary work would be completed in July.

Okowa also said the state was ready to host 54 African countries in the 21st Senior African Athletics Competition (SAAC) scheduled for August at the reconstructed Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

He said further that the ongoing multi-billion naira storm drainage project in Asaba, the state capital, would be completed in 2019, adding that a similar one would commence in Warri and environs.

Earlier at the exhortation, Rev. Felix Omobude, urged the people of the state, especially the leaders, to live up to their responsibilities.

Omobude said though the government of the day had recorded some achievements, there was room for more.

According to him, Delta had contributed greatly to the development of the country and could not afford to go under but remain on the lead.

The ceremony attracted former governors of the state, James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan and their deputies as well as other dignitaries and clegies.

  • 2019: Saraki advocates increased women participation in politics

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki on Wednesday pledged to work with relevant political stakeholders to ensure that a greater number of women are given the opportunity to vie and occupy elective offices during the 2019 general elections.

Saraki, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, in Abuja, gave the pledge when the Conference of Nigeria Female Parliamentarians paid him a courtesy visit at the National Assembly.

He said that there is nothing to fear about having more women occupy political offices saying that such a development can only but help to strengthen the nation’s democracy.

He lamented that the present statistics of women in governance in the country is not encouraging and said that going into the 2019 elections, something must be done to change the tide.

Saraki said: “Anybody in this country today will agree that from the statistics you have given out here today, it is clear that definitely, we are not doing enough in the inclusion of women in politics and governance.

“We must change and turn the tide in this direction. We cannot continue with this low level of participation.

“What I want to assure you is that you have my full support and the full support of the National Assembly to see what we can do to ensure that as we go into 2019, it will be a year that we will change the level of participation of women in politics in this country.

“The challenge we have is that such an action is something that must be done collectively. We will champion it but it is something that requires all of us to work very hard for it to happen.

“I believe that what we will do is to make it clear that it must happen. It has to happen and it is in the interest of this country for it to happen.

“We want to reassure those that have fears about it that there is noting to worry about. It will only strengthen our democracy and make our country better.

“I am convinced that your visit is timely that in this 2019, we must make a difference. We must see a real change in this area,” he stated.

He commended the group for their advocacy and commitment to ensure that more women are voted into offices and said it is imperative to support women groups to push for greater political inclusion.

He said: “Political parties are now gearing up for election, this is the right time we must begin to demand from political parties and candidates that they must tell Nigerians what their policy is on gender affirmation.

“You have the votes, at least you have 46 – 48 per cent, let your votes do the work and if your votes do the work, then you will make the work easier for all of us.

“It is time for you to mobilize and work for it because it is important. A lot of us who have had the experience have found out, without any bias, that generally female politicians/parliamentarians are very committed, hardworking and more importantly very consistent and loyal.

“I think when you build a country and you build a political space, what is important is consistency and sometimes loyalty,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the group, Hon. Elizabeth Uyinmwen Ativie, decried the low level of women participation in the nation’s governance since 1999, in terms of both elective and appointive offices.

Ativie, who is the member representing Uhunmwode Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, however commended the President of the Senate for influencing the nomination and election of five women into the Kwara State House of Assembly during the 2015 general elections.

“Nigeria needs to invest in women’s participation in politics by creating an enabling environment for women to thrive and tackle perceived systemic and cultural hinderances to women’s inclusion,” she said.

She sought the support of the President of the Senate for the quick passage of the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill, implementation of 35 per cent affirmative action strategy and the abrogation of laws that infringe on citizens’ rights of women, among others.

  • Why women should boycott 2019 general elections – Activist

Why women should boycott 2019 general elections – Activist

Hajiya Aisha Muhammed, Assistant Secretary, Women Mentoring and Leadership Forum said women in the country should consider boycotting the 2019 elections if not given proper chance to aspire for elective positions.

Muhammed, a former councillor of Muciya ward, Sabongari Local Government, Kaduna State, said women were being marginalised in the political sphere despite having the largest population of voters in the country.

The women activist said in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Kaduna that current low level of political participation of women was disturbing and may lead to apathy.

This will be a major setback to the country; it will reach a time when women will boycott election if not given equal rights, we will lie in bed and refuse to vote.

We were the ones that supported men to be there, why can’t they support us too”, she stressed

According to her, it is time to reserve some elective positions specifically for women in the country.

If for example out of the 24 LGA’s in Kaduna state, four or five LGA’s are saved for only women to contest and win, it will encourage women to participate actively in politics”, she said.

Muhammed said in spite of the setback, the women should continue to aspire for political positions so as to represent women in governance and decision making in the country.

We are encouraging women to come out and aspire, there is no barrier, what a man can aspire for, a woman can equally do.

Women should not relent even if they don’t emerge victorious after elections, they must continue striving till they reach their goal.

We may come out and not be voted for, but let us continue to aspire until we become something and show the impact of women in governance”, Muhammed stressed.
