IWD: Women hold 3.4 per cent of federal legislative seats – Senate Leader

The Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele has raised on concern over weak investment in capacity of women in Nigeria which according to him has hindered possibility of achieving the fifth agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bamidele made this known in a statement in Abuja in a message to mark the 2024 International Women’s Day.

“Inspite of the fact that we are six years away to achieve bridging the gap between men and women, Nigeria is still confronted with under-representation both in the corporate and public sectors,” he said.

He further lamented about how women are victims of armed attacks in different parts of the country.

“Women hold only 3.4 per cent of federal legislative seats – four are 109 senators and 14 out of 360 members of the House of Representatives.

“Across all sectors, women inclusion is largely low in Nigeria whether in the corporate world or public sector.

“All these figures attest weak investment in women and eclipse the possibility of achieving the fifth agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“The fifth agenda mandates the world leaders to invest in initiatives and programmes that bring about gender equality by 2030.

“2030 is just six years away, and we are still confronted with ugly indices that remind us of the widening gap between men and women.”

The Senate Leader therefore admitted that the National Assembly recognised that women inclusion in governance was pivotal to achieving sustainable development in Nigeria.

He added that gender inclusiveness was at the core of the Revised Legislative Agenda of the 10th Senate.

  • How we killed 7 women for rituals – Suspect

How we killed 7 women for rituals – Suspect

A suspected ritual killer on Thursday in Abeokuta narrated how he and other accomplices lured seven women to their deaths through a dating application.

The 32-year-old, who was paraded by the police command in Ogun, confessed to being a member of a ritualist gang that specialised in killing women and selling their body parts for money ritual.

Police operatives had arrested and paraded some members of the gang.

The suspect, who had been on the run and was later arrested by the police, said he joined the gang in September 2023 and had participated in the killing of the seven women.

“I got the ladies from MyChat which is a hookup app.

” I just talk to them that I want to hook up with them whenever a client contacted me that they needed human body parts.

“They will call me that they need body parts and I will go to the application and chat up the ladies for hookup.

” I don’t know the ladies, we don’t have any conversation, I only chat them up on the app.

”I ask if they are available and we negotiate on the amount they want to collect.

” When we reach an agreement, I will send my address to them and they will come over to me at Atan-Ota.

“I will pick them up and call my client that they ( victims) are around.

” I will then take them to his house in Igbo Olomi, Atan-Ota, where we will then kill them inside his sitting room.

“I joined the gang in September  2023 and we have killed seven ladies.

“I don’t know what they use the corpses of the ladies for, my job is just to source for the ladies and bring them in.

”They don’t usually tell me the amount they will give; at times, they will pay me N30,000, at other times, they will give me N40,000.

”I don’t know who they sell the body parts to and I don’t ask them about it, my own is just to source for the ladies and collect my money,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, said that the suspects conspired with an herbalist to kill the victims for money ritual.

He said the suspects strangled their victims to death and dismembered their bodies for sale to the herbalist and another accomplice who was on the run.

The commissioner said that the command was working assiduously to unravel the identity of the victims.

He urged members of the public with missing relatives to report to the police with photographs of such persons.

”The command is using this avenue to advise our youths for the umpteenth time to desist from untoward behaviours.

”They are advised to use the social media and attendant technology positively.

”It is through a social media platform that all the victims were lured to their untimely deaths.

“The suspects have assured the police that they will recognise the victims they have killed if their photographs are made available,” he said.

  • Ex-Islamic leader ‘obsessed’ with women, says first wife

Ex-Islamic leader ‘obsessed’ with women, says first wife

The first wife of slain Islamic State leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi on Friday said her husband and other members of the extremist organisation were “obsessed’’ with women.

The Islamic State leader and leaders in his organisation have become obsessed with women, and have turned the “Caliphate State” into a state for women,’’ Asma Mohammed said.

Mohammed said this during an exclusive interview with the Al-Hadath television channel.

She added that Al-Baghdadi and his organisation’s obsession with women “went beyond the limits of humanity.”

Mohammed, who was married to al-Baghdadi in 1999, said that her husband had more than 10 Yezidi women as slaves, adding that he once married a 13-year-old girl from Iraq.

Currently jailed in Iraq, Mohammed was clad in a black veil and was rarely looking straight at the camera throughout the whole interview.

She said that some of Al-Baghdadi’s wives were as young as his daughters.

She stressed that foreign women played an important role in recruiting fighters.

According to al-Baghdadi’s wife, U.S. aid worker Kayla Mueller was also said to have been one of al-Baghdadi’s slaves.

Mueller was kidnapped by Islamic State in 2013 in the Syrian city of Aleppo and died in captivity.

Baghdadi’s wife added that al-Baghdadi only cared about his personnel safety and ignored the rest of his family’s well-being as they kept moving from one place to another.

She said she had six children with al-Baghdadi, but three had died, though she did not provide details as to where and how.

Al-Baghdadi’s wife had claimed that when they married, he was normal with no extremist views, but that changed after he was detained by U.S. forces in 2004 for no reason.

In the summer of 2014, Al-Baghdadi, as the leader of Islamic State, declared a “caliphate” in large areas of Iraq and the neighbouring civil war-torn country of Syria.

The terrorist organisation controlled the areas for years.

In August 2014, Islamic State attacked the Sinjar region of Iraq and captured thousands of Yezidi women, later turning them into sex slaves for the jihadists.

The extremist militant group, though it had captured large swathes of land in western and northern Iraq plus parts of Syria, was defeated in late 2017.

However, Islamic State cells are still active in both countries.

U.S. Special Forces killed Al-Baghdadi in Syria in autumn 2019.

  • Alleged brutalisation of minor: Enugu women place N1m bounty on Anambra woman

Alleged brutalisation of minor: Enugu women place N1m bounty on Anambra woman

Women from Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have placed N1 million bounty on an Anambra woman, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, who reportedly brutalised her 11-year-old househelp.

Operating under the auspices of Umuada Awgu Global Association (UAGA), the group also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Okafor to hand herself over to the police.

The Founder and President of UAGA, Chinemerem Anyi, announced the financial reward for any informant on the fleeing woman’s whereabouts at the group’s news briefing on the matter on Thursday in Enugu.

According to Anyi, anybody who avails the police, Anambra State Government or other relevant authorities with useful information that can lead to the woman’s arrest will smile home with N1 million from the group.

She said that Okafor, who hail from Anambra and lived in Onitsha, was accusing the victim of touching the private part of her eight-year-old daughter, while bathing her.

Anyi, who was flanked at the briefing by other members of the group, said “it beats our imagination that almost three weeks after the woman perpetrated the evil act, the police were still saying that she is still at large”.

She said that the organisation was beginning to smell a rat, “going by the manner the matter was being handled by the Anambra Police Command”.

She said that the group also issued the police 48-hour ultimatum to apprehend the perpetrator or incur its wrath.

She said: “The Awgu women have been resisting the temptation of taking the law into our hands over the matter as civilised people but we warn that such calm disposition should not be taken for granted or weakness.

“We are heartbroken over the barbaric act and today, we gathered for this important press briefing over the recent brutalisation of our daughter, Miss Happiness Nwafor, by her wicked madam.

“We are using this platform to call on the woman to better submit herself to the police or other relevant authorities, because no matter where she is, she will be fished out.

“Our searchlight is on you and we will not rest until justice is served on this matter,” Anyi said.

The group urged the police and Anambra Government to, as a matter of urgency, imploy every arsenal to apprehend the woman, saying that it was being pushed to the wall over the issue.

“Okafore has murdered sleep and cannot sleep, she has bitten more than she can chew,” it also said.

The group, therefore, called on mothers to bear the number of children they could carter for, so as to avoid giving out their underaged children as househelps.

The group had on February 7, staged a peaceful protest in Enugu, demanding justice for the victim.

In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development on Tuesday announced a N2 million reward for any person with useful information on the woman’s whereabouts.

Okafor allegedly brutalised her househelp, Happiness Nwafor, whom she brought in January to live with her.

She was reported to have inserted a hot knife into the minor’s private part and also burned her face and buttock with a hot electric iron.

Meanwhile, the Anambra Police Command has declared the woman, who is said to be at large, wanted.

I have never dated multiple women at the same time – Shallipopi

The singer stated that he does not enjoy dating multiple women at the same time.

He revealed this in a recent podcast interview with British media personality Madame Joyce.

“I have never been in a polygamous relationship. I stick to one woman if I am in a relationship.

“I can’t double date because you can get exposed easily. If you have a girlfriend, you love your girlfriend and you cheat, you will definitely be caught. I don’t cheat because I will be caught. It’s not as if I’m easily caught. You can act smart and cheat, but you know that you are lying to yourself.

“I have never cheated before. You can never catch me cheating. I have never done it.”

  • 85 percent of Women want to leave their marriages – Jaiye Kuti

85 percent of Women want to leave their marriages – Jaiye Kuti

Nollywood actress, Jaiye Kuti, has said that 85 percent of women want to leave their marriages.

Jaiye Kuti thespian during an interview with Gistzlife said she had even attempted to leave her marriage thrice, stressing that cultural differences have been a major factor in why most couples struggle in their marriage.

“If you ask a hundred women, 85% want to exit their marriage. I even tried to leave thrice. The problem is that when you marry someone from a different culture, people start to reveal their actual selves. A man would treat and pamper a woman when he wanted to get married, but when a second marriage and kids are involved, things go too far. Men can also have egoistical tendencies and are unstoppable when it comes to cheating.”

  • Allow married women to bear their fathers’ names – MURIC tells FG

Allow married women to bear their fathers’ names – MURIC tells FG

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has tasked the Federal Government to allow married women to bear their fathers’ names.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director, MURIC, stated in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

“Our attention has been drawn to the plight of married Muslim women who are being disallowed by employers from bearing their fathers’ names. This amounts to forceful enslavement, denial of Allah-given fundamental human right to parental identity and wrongful dismissal of loco parentis.

“We condemn the current practice for three major reasons, namely, for generating confusion in the society, for creating a monumental identity crisis among married women and for depriving women of their Allah-given fundamental human right to personal as well as parental identity in marriage.

“Instead of this, we advocate the adoption of the women-friendly Islamic practice which allows married women to bear their fathers’ surnames after marriage.

“No woman dropped suddenly from the sky and even if some appear out of nowhere, they must have been born, bred, nurtured, buttered and marmaladed by certain parents before they grew up and matured into womanhood. Their education was also sponsored by their parents at a time that the future husband probably knew nothing about them and spent no kobo on their upbringing and their education,’’ he said.

He added: “It therefore beats logic, fairness and natural justice that a husband appears out of nowhere to commandeer a woman’s parental identity simply by marrying her. Such identity robbery also has its advantages.

“For instance, women who are educated are forced to advertise change of names to their husbands’ surnames after marriage in order to retain the validity of their documents and properties. It often becomes very difficult and sometimes impossible for married women to be located or to retain old friends due to such change of name.

“Those who want to be sincere among married women today will confirm the stress they have gone through from this experience. Islam sets women free from such stress by permitting married women to retain their original family names.

“Contrary to the general claim that Islam discriminates against women, Islamic liberation theology actually teaches respect for the dignity of women in all circumstances. One of such circumstances is the period when women are in wedlock. Whereas Western civilization robs married women of their original family identity by insisting that they should bear their husbands’ surnames, the Shari’ah allows women to bear their own fathers’ names even after marriage.’’

“We therefore invite the Federal Government and other relevant authorities to set the machinery in motion towards allowing married women to bear their fathers’ names. In particular, we charge both houses in the National Assembly, Senate and the House of Representatives, to introduce the necessary bills that will set Nigerian women free from undue masculine domination.

“This advocacy is not for Muslim women alone. We are certain that Muslim women are not the only ones who feel the pinch. MURIC will love to see every married woman who desires to be identified by her father’s name enabled to do so. Our lawmakers should frame the clauses in such a way that all women can enjoy the freedom to choose between bearing their fathers’ names or their husbands’. It is time to set Nigerian women free. They are the mothers of our society.

“We contend that the whole gamut of women liberation struggle boils down to a sham and a mirage until this goal is achieved. A married woman is not a slave. She is not just a dot in social statistics. She has a soul and that soul yearns for love. She covets to love and be loved, not only by her husband but also by her family and vice versa. Nigeria must not fail her. Parental identity is sacrosanct. Husbands can never replace fathers in matters of parental identity and that is what the current system compels women to go through. Enough is enough”.

  • Chike reveals why he prefers dating older women

Chike reveals why he prefers dating older women

Nigerian singer, Chike Ezekpeazu Osebuka, known as Chike, has revealed why he prefer romantic relationships with older women.

The  singer expressed that he finds older women more adept at effective communication, suggesting that they tend to excel in this aspect as they age.

Chike disclosed this in an appearance on a recent episode of the Unpack Podcast, hosted by NAY.

According to him, “Most can’t communicate properly. The time you start finding a woman who can communicate, they are slightly advanced in age. Not a girl of 23 years.

“Imagine I’m running around with some 23-year-old, what’s she going to handle? What’s she going to understand?

“She just wanna take pictures and be on Instagram and tell everybody that she’s dating you. What are you unpacking for that person?

“Let’s be honest, you can find younger women who are so mature, but they are rare. But you find it more in older women.

“Then, before you know it, you find guys dating older women. And you wonder what is going on. It’s because, as a guy, when you are getting to a place where you want a certain level of peace, it’s only older women who can give you that.

“The past two relationships I have been in, they [my partners] have been older than me. There is no small girl that can say I am dating her.

“I mean, I probably just say ‘Hi’ to them [younger women]. And that’s it. It’s not going to get past that. Because I know where it’s going. Our visions are just not the same.”
