Women protest at National Assembly over failed gender, equality bills

Women groups on Wednesday stormed National Assembly (NASS), Abuja to protest and register their anger against the rejection of Gender and Equality bills by both Chambers.

The groups described the rejection of reserved special seats for women at the National Assembly as wicked and unacceptable.

The placards carrying protesters vowed not to leave the main entrance to the complex just as they called on the lawmakers to revisit and vote in favour of the bills as a matter of urgency and necessity.

The protesters described the killing of the bills as insensitive and disdain to Nigerian women.

They faulted the voting procedure used by the leadership of both Senate and House of Representatives leading to the killing of the bills.

The protesters blocked the main gate of the complex preventing lawmakers and staff from gaining access into the complex.

According to one of the leaders of the group , Biola Akiode: “We are here to demand that the wrong that was done to the women should be redressed. What we saw yesterday was a manifestation of historical injustices that affecting the participation of voice of the Nigeria women.

“Yesterday we realised that people who are representing us are not representing the 50% of the population and they were actually representing themselves. The issue of Nigerian women and young people are not prioritised.

“We have five demands and we negotiated these demands through their different interventions to put up those issues.

“We have women who met the speaker of the House. We have women who came to present positions at the public hearing.

Both legislative Chambers during the consideration of the Constitution amendment voted against the special seats for women in parliament.

The bill if it had scaled through would have come down to creating 111 extra seats for women at the National Assembly.

BREAKING: Reps reject bill seeking to provide special seats for women in NASS

The House of Representatives has rejected a bill seeking to reserve special seats for Women at the National and State Houses of Assembly.

This followed the rejection of the bill at the electronic voting on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution on Tuesday in Abuja.

The bill entitled,” A Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide For Special Seats for Women at the National and State Houses of Assembly”.

Eighty-one lawmakers voted in favour of the bill, while 208 voted against it and 13 members abstained from voting.

Present at the voting was Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, the wife of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who tried to lobby for the adoption of the bill by lawmakers.

Dolapo was accompanied by Mrs Pauline Tallen, the Minister of Women Affairs, Civil Society Organisations and women groups.

The lawmakers also rejected a bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the 1999 constitution to provide for affirmative action for women in political party administration.

Two hundred and twenty-four lawmakers voted in favour of the bill, falling short of the required 240 votes needed to pass the ball.

But the House via a voice vote adopted a bill seeking for a minimum percentage of women in either ministerial or commissioner appointments.

The bill entitled, “a Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide a Minimum Percentage for Women in Ministerial or Commissioner Nominees.”

This, however, was not without the intervention of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and some lawmakers who pleaded with their colleagues to allow the bill to be passed.

What women should have when married to celebrities – Lady Duke

Wife of a celebrity, Mrs Capriz Duke, has advised women married to celebrities to be patient, understanding and pray that women who come too close do not snatch their husbands.

Duke, wife of the president, Creative Industry Group (DIG), and musician, Felix Duke, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to her, “it is really not an easy task to be married to an entertainer who is a public figure, especially to women who want to be identified with success.”

She advised women married to celebrities to be understanding because mixing up with people would surely contribute to their success in the industry.

“You just have to be patient and understanding, knowing that this is a world of entertainment.

“If you are a wife of a celebrity or a public personality, you have to be ready to overlook many things, if not, you will develop high blood pressure.

“You have to be in the world of entertainment too and even if you are not, see yourself as one, you have to learn to play along,” she said.

Lady Duke said from inception, you should know that getting married to an entertainer involves sharing him with various kinds of women.

She said that the most important thing is to pray that desperate women do not succeed because they are ready to take over completely.

“Some of us started suffering with these guys when they were no body and these women overlooked them because they had nothing to offer.

“But as soon as they become somebody, they are ready to go to any mile to snatch your property, some desperate women only want to be identified with success,” she said.

According to her, it is only hot when the couples are younger but once they start getting older, maturity sets in and the men would begin to appreciate their wives better.

She recalled that at the early stage of her marriage, when her man was still singing, desperate messages and calls were great distractions but she remained calm.

“Those days, I would be home and some women will call or text but the best thing was to avoid monitoring or checking his phones.

“With time, you will understand what it is to be married to a celebrity because as a younger person, it is a different mindset but as you get older, you get matured,” she said.

She then advised wives of celebrities to learn to remain calm, attractive, friendly and non possessive because their husbands are public figures but importantly, pray for them.

Australian men likely to receive double wages than women – Report

Australian men are twice as likely to be highly paid than women, a government report has found.

The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) on Friday published its latest data on the gender pay gap.

Based on the earnings of more than four million employees between April 2020 and March 2021, it revealed that men, on average, earn 25,792 Australian dollars (18,371 U.S. dollars) more per year than women.

It equates to a gender pay gap of 22.8 per cent, a slight fall from 23.3 per cent the previous year, meaning that men earn 10 Australian dollars while a woman made 7.72 Australian dollars.

One third of male employees make more than 120,000 Australian dollars per year, as likely as females, while women are 50 per cent more likely to earn less than 60,000 Australian dollars .

73 per cent of Australian employers have pay gaps in favor of men while seven per cent favor women and 20 per cent have achieved parity.

Mary Wooldridge, Director of the WGEA, said in a media release that from the very top-down, women are undervalued in Australian businesses and underrepresented where decisions are made.

“Our latest insights show this pattern clearly, 22 per cent of all boards still don’t have a single woman in the room and about three quarters of all boards have a vast majority (over 60 per cent) of men.

“Of those heavily male-dominated boards, only 12 per cent have set a target to increase the representation of women and on average that target is only 35 per cent not even what is generally considered a balanced board,” she added.

The construction industry had the biggest gender pay gap, with men earning 30 per cent more on average than women followed by financial and insurance services 29.5 per cent.

Professional, scientific and technical services industries earn 24.7 per cent.

One Australian dollar equals 0.71 U.S. dollar.

Stop looking for ready-made husband – Charly Boy advises women

Nigerian singer and activist, Charles Oputa has advised ladies to stop seeking ready-made husbands and start being supportive.

In an Instagram post, Charly Boy said that ladies must be able to offer more than sex and start supporting their men in other areas of life.

According to him, most relationships are cut short nowadays because many ladies only have sex to offer in their relationships and nothing more.

He said: “Many girls complain that guys walk away from them simply because they refused to give them sex. Some girls have even turned into sex toys just to keep a man. Let me be very open here, sex might not be the reason these guys walk away.

“Remove sex from a relationship and you’ll see that most girls do not have anything else to offer their man.

” Aside from sex, what do you have to offer to a man. Can you support him spiritually? Can you support him physically and financially? How about mentally?”

He urged ladies to stop spending unnecessarily on material things and plan for the future with their partners.

“All you girls do is demand money for bags, shoes, phones, clothes, and outings. Making him spend unnecessarily. What are you even bringing to the table?

“Have you ever sat him down and helped him plan for his future. Try to be a woman that a man will always regret losing for the rest of his life.

“Be that woman that your man can’t afford to lose to another man. Build your man to your taste and stop looking for a ready-made husband when you’re not a ready-made wife,” he added.

  • Why men of God must run when threatened by women – Adeboye

Why men of God must run when threatened by women – Adeboye

General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has told men of God not to fight women, but to run when women threatened to deal with them.

Adeboye, at a special online service on Sunday, cited the case of Elijah and Jezebel to buttress his point.

“Elijah arrived at Jezreel, sat down in his house and was enjoying the victories that had happened. He had just called down fire from heaven.

“He had prophesied and prayed and there was rain for the first time in three years. He had brought about national revival. He had outrun the chariot of the King.

“He was happy but then a message came from the First Lady of the land: ‘I heard what you did on Mount Carmel, I swear to you by my gods by this time tomorrow, you will be like one of the prophets that you killed’. Elijah the great man of God ran, the man who dared four hundred and fifty prophets ran from a woman,” he said.

Adeboye added: “I know a lot of people have said how could that be? Elijah was very wise. I have told you men of God again and again, don’t fight a woman.

“If a woman says she is going to deal with you, run. If you learn to run today, you will be alive to fight tomorrow. The African elders have a saying “the one who knows when to fight and when to run is the one they call the champion”. You must know when to fight and when to run.”

“When Jezebel says “I am coming for you” Elijah did the right thing. He ran,” Adeboye said in a transcribed message by Church Gist.
