Pope Francis urges peace at New Year, says violence against women an affront to God

Pope Francis urged the world to “roll up our sleeves” for peace in a New Year’s message Saturday, while calling violence against women an affront to God.

Marking the 55th World Day of Peace, the head of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics devoted his Angelus address to encouraging a stop to violence around the world, telling the assembled crowd at Saint Peter’s Square to keep peace at the forefront of their thoughts.

“Let’s go home thinking peace, peace, peace. We need peace,” said the pope, speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace under sunny skies.

“I was looking at the images in the television programme ‘In His Image’ today, about war, displaced people, the miseries. This is happening today in the world. We want peace,” he added, referring to a religious broadcast on Italian state television.

The pope — who turned 85 on December 17 — reminded the faithful that peace required “concrete actions,” such as attention to the most fragile, forgiving others and promoting justice.

“And it needs a positive outlook as well, one that always sees, in the Church as well as in society, not the evil that divides us, but the good that unites us!” he added.

“Getting depressed or complaining is useless. We need to roll up our sleeves to build peace.”

Francis, who in March begins the ninth year of his papacy, called violence against women an insult to God during a mass in honour of the Virgin Mary earlier Saturday in Saint Peter’s Basilica.

“The Church is mother, the Church is woman. And since mothers bestow life and women ‘keep’ the world, let us all make greater efforts to promote mothers and to protect women,” he said.

“How much violence is directed against women! Enough! To hurt a woman is to insult God, who from a woman took on our humanity.”

To mark the World Day of Peace, Francis recommended education, labour and intergenerational dialogue as building blocks for peace.

“Teaching and education are the foundations of a cohesive civil society capable of generating hope, prosperity and progress,” the pope wrote in a message published by the Vatican on December 21, noting that military spending had increased beyond Cold War levels.

“It is high time, then, that governments develop economic policies aimed at inverting the proportion of public funds spent on education and on weaponry,” wrote the pontiff.

The pope, who has spent much of his papacy highlighting economic inequality, the plight of migrants and the environment, returned to those themes following his Angelus prayer Saturday.

“We are still living in uncertain and difficult times due to the pandemic. Many are frightened about the future and burdened by social problems, personal problems, dangers stemming from the ecological crisis, injustices and by global economic imbalances,” said the pope.

“Looking at Mary with her Son in her arms, I think of young mothers and their children fleeing wars and famine or waiting in refugee camps.”

On New Year’s Eve, Pope Francis did not preside over vespers at St Peter’s Basilica as planned, instead turning the service over to the dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals.

The pointiff read the homily but spent most of the service seated on the sidelines.

The previous year, Francis was unable to celebrate New Year’s masses because of a painful sciatica.

On Friday, the Vatican cancelled the pope’s traditional visit to the Nativity Scene in Saint Peter’s Square over coronavirus concerns.

As elsewhere in Europe, Italy — and by extension the tiny Vatican City State — is facing a surge in coronavirus cases fuelled by the new Omicron variant.

How economic violence in Nigeria enslaves women – NLC President

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Saturday bemoaned the harassment of women in the workplace, saying it was suicidal for Nigeria’s development.

It argued that such economic violence makes women and girls remain economically dependent on men by preventing them from gainful employment.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, stated these at Labour House, Abuja during the public presentation of a Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (GBVH) participatory research report.

Wabba maintained that the ratification of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 190 by the Federal Government, was the only solution to eradicate such inhumane treatment.

The labour leader said: “The perversity of gender-based violence is that it is mostly an attack against one of the most vulnerable segments of our population — women. Gender-based violence and harassment thus disproportionately affect women and girls.

“For a country that already suffers from a huge gap between opportunities for males and females, it would be developmentally suicidal to allow gender-based violence steal the few available opportunities for our women to thrive and contribute to the development of society.”

According to him, organised labour understands the challenges of institutionalising gender rights in the country including the right to freedom from gender-based violence given a domineering culture of patriarchy in Nigerian society.

The NLC boss urged Nigerians to continue to promote the importance of a work culture based on mutual respect and the dignity of the human being as a first-line defence and precaution against violence and harassment.

He added, ”It also very important to emphasise economic violence which makes women and girls remain economically dependent on men by preventing them from gainful employment and if they are working, forcing them to hand over their earnings to the men and most times the men dictate the type of work to be done by women, and also control the income as well as resources owned by women.

”This is the reason we must all join hands to eliminate poverty in our country, including working poverty. This is the reason we must promote social and industrial instruments such as the national minimum wage which seeks to emplace a minimal buffer against poverty.”

On her part, the Chairperson of NLC National Women Commission, Hajiya Salamatu Aliyu, described as worrisome, Nigeria’s refusal to ratify ILO C190, saying GBVH was adequately covered in international labour standards and treaties.

She listed Argentina, Ecuador, Fiji, Namibia, Somalia, Uruguay and Mauritius as seven countries that have ratified ILO C190.

She said, ”The report being launched today is a milestone achievement in our struggle towards promoting the right of every person to work based on dignity and respect free from any form of violence and harassment.”

Rivers women barricade NDDC, demand reconstitution of board, release of forensic report

Disappointed over the deliberate refusal by Federal Government to reconstitute the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC board, some women from Niger Delta on Tuesday shut down the main entrance of Niger Delta Development Commission in protest over the delay in the release of the report of the forensic audit of the commission as well as the constitution of the substantive board.

The aggrieved women sealed off the main entrance to the commission with their placards preventing access into the premises.

The presence of security agencies however could not deter the women from carrying on with their protest.
One of the leaders of the protesters Adienbo Odighonin, the Coordinator of the Wailing Women of Niger Delta said the protest was in expression of the grievances against the “sole administrator-ship” of the NDDC.

Odighonin also expressed concerns that they (women) have not been carried along in the scheme of things.

She said “We are here tell Akpabio, Malami and Buhari to constitute the board, to bring to public the outcome of the forensic audit report. To tell them that when constituting the board women should be properly constituted into the system”.

“We are here to tell them that this illegal sole administrator should be dissolved”.
We promised Niger Delta that we are going to bring out a naked women protest, this is just the beginning. Women will come here lie down and sleep and tell them that the board must be constituted”.

After a passionate appeal by the NDDC security operatives, the women submitted their protest letter before vacating the premises.

“And our plan is to explore all the areas of possible economic prosperity and development without exploiting the people.

“God Almighty has blessed Ekiti State with abundant natural and human resources. What we need is the right leadership. And Olujimi is the right person,” she said.

While declaring herself as the best hand for the most coveted seat, Olujimi said that the opposition PDP needs to put its best forward for the poll if it is serious to unseat the ruling APC.

“So, all we need is a candidate with good character, great antecedents and that is popular. And I have consistently proved that with my track record.

“My footprints are everywhere in the state despite being from Ekiti South,” she added. (

Simi opens up on reason behind #NobodyLikeWoman challenge

‘Duduke’ singer, Simisola Kosoko a.k.a Simi has opened up on reason behind the #NobodyLikeWomen challenge, which she initiated on Instagram.

TheNewsGuru reports that for the past few days, women had shared back and white images of themselves, where they shared offensive comments they have received in the past.

Simi started the challenge last Friday with a cryptic message, ‘How can she ask for that kind of money? Is she not pregnant?’

Taking a cue from her, dozens of female celebrities, social media influencers and women started sharing pictures and images of themselves with these destructive statements.

One of the highlights of the challenge was when reality TV star, Khafi Ekpata, revealed that a critic asked her if her baby was ugly.

Simi noted that she started the challenge to help women challenge the things that have been said to demean them.

She said, “The reason many, many women are so strong today is that they’ve had to defy the things that were designed to make them weak. Stereotypes. Shame. Fear. Pain. Abuse.

“I respect the strength and courage it has taken many women in these past few days to be vulnerable enough to confront the things that people have said to them to poke at their insecurities and to demean them.

“Many of you have defied the status quo and changed the narrative. You’re brave. You are strong. You are a woman. And there’s nobody like you.”

In the same vein, the singer also revealed that by midnight, she will release her latest single, “Woman”.

The mother-of-one also added, “In less than 12 hours, by the grace of God, my single “Woman” will be with you.

“I’m grateful for every woman that is standing in the gap for all of us. Your vulnerability is courage. I hope that, going forward, we are mindful of the words we say and the seeds that we plant in the lives of people.

“I also hope that we learn to support and protect women that are not able to do so for themselves. Now we celebrate Women! See you at midnight. #NobodyLikeWoman”

You won’t have good home if you join feminism- Oyedepo tells women

The General Overseer of the Living Faith Church International aka Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has urged women against being part of the feminist movement.

The clergyman who gave the advice during a message to his congregation stated that feminism leads to frustration and devastation.

He noted that women of today ignore the Bible’s instruction to submit to their husbands because they think such is obsolete.

According to him, when the Bible says “submit yourself to your husband in everything,” women respond saying, “No, not today, that was before. Right now, nobody can do that. We are co-heirs, male and female, no difference.”

Oyedepo continued, saying such women think they are too smart for God to lead them.

He said when they are told that “this is the way to go,” they respond saying, “No, let me educate you, God. You didn’t go to school, did you?”

The cleric continued, “Right now, there is a feminine revolution. Then you get into feminine frustration and destiny devastation.

“You know something, no book on earth will ever overtake the Bible in currency. It is the eternal truth. While the earth remains, the truth of scriptures remains in force, you either choose to follow or go your way.

“For we can do nothing against the truth – no matter what civilisation we are talking about – but for the truth at all times.

“If feminist revolution is your vision, don’t attempt to get married, because it won’t work.”

  • Allow husbands to suck your breasts – Chief Nurse tells pregnant women

Allow husbands to suck your breasts – Chief Nurse tells pregnant women

Roseline Oladimeji, a Chief Nursing Sister, has advised pregnant women to allow their husbands to suck their breasts.

The expert said this would help to prepare them for breastfeeding after delivery.

Oladimeji spoke at a programme on the 2021 World Breastfeeding Week organised by Amuwo Odofin Maternal and Child Centre in Festac Town, Lagos.

“Allow your husband to suck your breasts during pregnancy. Apart from bonding, it will help the nipples to be out and make it easier for your baby to latch on,” she said.

NAN quoted her as advising women to also rub vaseline on nipples at night before going to bed. This, according to Oladimeji, softens them.

The Chief Nurse said proper preparation of the breasts during pregnancy forestalls lactation problems after delivery.

She explained that the colostrum, the first form of milk produced after birth, contains nutrients that help boost the baby’s immunity.

Oladimeji said some types of foods, herbs and medications could harm babies through the breast milk.

She warned that taking palmwine to improve lactation could introduce alcohol into the baby’s system during breastfeeding.

The expert further appealed to mothers to ignore counsels from persons who are not medical professionals.
