FCT workers speak out against alleged salary cut by Wike

The Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) say workers have nothing against the Minister of FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, over alleged salary cut.

JUAC President, Mr Matilukuro Oluwakorede stated this in Abuja on Saturday, while reacting to a social media publication alleging that, “workers in Nigeria Capital, Abuja groan as Wike cuts salaries, allowances amid inflation”.

Olyuwakorede said, “The public should disregard the information in circulation. it is not emanating from us. We have an internal issue; we had a meeting and agreed on the best way to manage the issue.

“We have nothing to do with what is trending online currently.

“We love our minister. We don’t have any issue against him as at this moment that I am talking to you, and I wish to be quoted anywhere.”

On the issue of the salary, he explained that JUAC had fought for some allowances, adding however, that the allowances were not budgeted for in the 2023 budget.

He identified the allowances as peculiar allowance, hazard allowance and “one or two other allowances like that.”

He explained that the allowances overshot FCTA and FCDA personnel budget, adding that in view of the development, the FCTA management called the leadership of the committee over the challenge.

He added that they all agreed at the meeting, that the remaining funds in the vault should be used to pay October salary but may affect peculiar allowances.

“We realised that the little fund remaining may affect peculiar allowance, and we say we don’t mind stepping it down by one month, while the FCT Administration does the needful against the remaining months.

“So that by November, we return to normalcy. So, I don’t know why journalists are just cashing out on this.

“But I wish to say unequivocally, that we don’t have any problem with our distinguished honourable minister or the minister of state or even the permanent secretary of FCTA.

“We are in good relationship and this decision that we have taken, is for the best interest of staff generally,” the president said.

JUAC leadership had on Friday issued a circular, signed by its President and General Secretary, Mr Akuh Sunday, intimating their members on salary shortfall for October.

JUAC explained in the circular that FCTA and FCDA that management had asked the committee to sensitise all staff on the inability to pay salary of all staff in the months of October.

The development, it said, was because FCTA personal budget vote has been exhausted following the payment of the 40 per cent peculiar allowance, hazard allowance and other allowances.

The committee, however, noted that the payment of the allowance in some Departments, Secretariat and Agencies were not budgeted for.

“In view of the above, JUAC insisted that instead of not paying salary at all in October, management should handle the matter in this manner.

“First, the October salary be paid without the peculiar allowance which is what the current personnel cost vote can carry.

“Secondly, between now and November, virement will be made to transfer funds from other votes to beef up the personnel cost vote to enable management to pay November Salary in full.

“In addition, the arrears for the peculiar allowance of October will be paid in November alongside the arrears for the N35,000 wage award.

“JUAC agreed to these terms because it believes that this is the best bargain and decision that it could take in the best interest of the entire staff of FCTA and FCDA, given the current situation we have found ourselves,” JUAC had said in the circular.

How my boyfriend’s ex workers attempted to kidnap me- Nenny B

Nigerian broadcaster Nenny B has narrated with evidence to back up her claims that her boyfriend’s ex-workers attempted to kidnap her.

Nnena Egwueke, fondly called Nenny B, posted a video on her Instagram showing how the plans of her ex-boyfriend’s former workers were foiled.

In the video recorded from inside her home, the men were seen strategically positioned outside her house supposedly waiting for her to step out of her home.

According to her narration in the video, she was supposed to pick up a package she was expecting from a dispatch rider, thankfully her boyfriend Ayorinde Okiki aka Dj Kaywise was around at the time and offered to help intercept her package.

The perpetrators; Abraham Losa , Tobi Chukwu, and even Kaywise’s twin brother Keyinde Ayorinde were captured in the video, evidently disgruntled that their plan fell through.

It all began when Nenny G posted a broken heart emoji on a black background, to her Instagram account. After this, her fans expressed their concern in her comment section, trying to ascertain what was wrong. Many ascertained that she and her boyfriend had broken up, or something had happened to him.

On Sunday, August 13, 2023, she posted a detailed official press release to her page addressing the issue at hand. She claimed that she received death threats from an unknown caller in 2021 and after the involvement of the Nigerian police, they discovered that the threats came from a former worker of Kaywise named Shola Olabinta.

Moving on, she noted that it was on July 30, 2023, that she was almost kidnapped by the three men Kaywise had dismissed from his service in 2021. She noted that while those three have been apprehended, the other accomplices were still at large.

Nenny B did not stop there, she also posted a legal undertaking signed by Shola, restraining him from calling, texting, or being in the same space as herself or Kaywise. She assured her fans that she had more evidence to post.

  • Survey: 22% of UK employees report discrimination in workplace

Survey: 22% of UK employees report discrimination in workplace

More than 22 per cent of the UK employees have said they faced discrimination in the workplaces because of their identities.

But the figure was lower than in the U.S. and other European countries, according to new research released on Tuesday.

People from Black and Asian backgrounds, as well as those belonging to the LGBT+ community were more likely to have experienced such issues, the survey suggested.

Some 4,973 people from the US, UK, France, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands were surveyed online in May and June this year by data and market research company Savanta.

It said about 1,523 who were based in the UK, 22 per cent said they had experienced discrimination at work due to an aspect of their identity.

This was below the 28 per cent average across the six countries, with people appearing to be worst affected in the U.S. (33 per cent) and Sweden (32 per cent).

But the findings for people in the UK among under-represented groups suggested more experiences of discrimination.

It has a figure of 45 per cent for Black people and 41 per cent for people from an Asian background.

A third (33 per cent) of people from the LGBT+ community said they have experienced discrimination in the workplace.

Some 42 per cent of UK employees surveyed agreed there were inequalities in pay and promotion within their organisation just below the 45per cent average across all countries.

Black employees were more than twice as likely as the UK average to agree that they have been passed over for a promotion, at 58 per cent compared with 24 per cent.

Almost a quarter (24 per cent) of UK employees reported they had left a role or were considering a move in the near future because they did not feel comfortable expressing their views.

Sadia Corey, vice president of client development at Savanta, said.

“it’s worrying to learn that such a high number of employees have felt discriminated against in their place of work with many under-represented groups having similar experiences.

“While much discriminations come as a result of unconscious bias among workers, managers and company policy, there is clearly more to be done to ensure that the workplace is a safe space for everyone.’’

But the research also suggested some positives, with 84 per cent of people in the UK whose employer has a diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) task force.

They felt it has been effective at implementing change, and 70 per cent agreeing that such training has been effective.

Just over half (51 per cent) of UK employees reported that their employer addresses important social issues as they arise through holding meetings and webinars and sending out newsletters.

47 per cent of them said their employer validated all gender identities by for example encouraging workers to put their pronouns in their email signatures.

Almost two thirds (62 per cent) agreed that their employer creates an environment where all religious beliefs and identities are respected, the research found.

Corey added, “the good news is that there looks to be some progress among UK employers.

“Employees recognise that most employers are working hard to resolve these issues, and while there is still work to do.

“Senior leaders should be relieved that their DE&I diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are starting to make a difference.’’
