NFF begs Premier League to release players for World Cup qualifiers

President, Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, says the federation has made an appeal to the UK government to allow Super Eagles players feature in the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde on Tuesday.

In an interview with CNN, Pinnick said it would be painful if the UK-based players were stopped from playing against Cape Verde by the UK government’s COVID-19 restrictions.

English Premier League announced last month that its clubs would not release players for international matches played in red-list countries.

Cape Verde falls within the countries listed in the UK ‘red list’

According to the rules, individuals travelling in from these countries are meant to undergo a 10-day quarantine period, which means EPL players who visit the red list countries will miss some games due to a 10-day isolation period.

“We have made a representation to the English FA through CAF and FIFA. I don’t think that it is good. The quality of the World Cup remains the same. It will be painful and shameful if we don’t get this done. We have made a passionate plea to see positive football.

“The same waiver given to European countries should be applied to Africa as well,” Pinnick said.

“Every player who has been vaccinated should be allowed to visit these red-listed countries because it will have an adverse effect on the quality of play from these African teams. Nigeria will be missing seven players for the game against Cape Verde. The UK government should relax this rule a bit.

“We believe we have some level of recognition and appreciation by the EPL and the English government because African players have contributed in no small way to the growth, development and finances of these institutions.

“We are talking about the legalities of holding back players from playing for their countries. They need to relax their boundaries.”

Qatar 2022 qualifiers: 11 Super Eagles in gym session, 17 others expected

Captain Ahmed Musa and 16 other players were still being expected at the Super Eagles’ Eko Hotel & Suites camp, even as 11 early birds sweated out in gym sessions ahead of Tuesday’s first training.

The Super Eagles tango with the Lone Star of Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Friday in one of the Day one clashes of the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

The Eagles are expected to fly out of Lagos to the island of Mindelo to take on the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in a Day two fixture on Sept. 7.

A statement by Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, on Monday said veteran defender Kenneth Omeruo was among the first arrivals that included South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, England-based quartet of Alex Iwobi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Others were former junior international Kingsley Michael, Abia Warriors’ Adekunle Adeleke, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, and forwards Henry Onyekuru and Chidera Ejuke.

“Team Administrator Dayo Enebi Achor confirmed to thenff.com that 17 other players, including Musa, defenders William Ekong, Leon Balogun, Olaoluwa Aina, Abdullahi Shehu, Tyronne Ebuehi and Chidozie Awaziem, and forwards Samuel Kalu, Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon and Terem Moffi were being expected at the team’s abode by Monday evening.

“Only midfielder Joseph Ayodele-Aribo and forward Paul Onuachu are expected to come into town on Tuesday. The team will have its first training session at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Tuesday,” the statement said.

NAN also reports that Friday’s encounter will be the first FIFA World Cup qualifying game in Lagos since the Eagles defeated the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the adjacent National Stadium, Surulere, in June 2000.

Coronavirus: FIFA may postpone World Cup qualifiers

FIFA is considering postponing the Asian World Cup qualifiers due to be played this month because of the coronavirus outbreak, the global football body said.

China’s matches against Maldives at home and Guam away have already been moved Buriram, Thailand, and will be played behind closed doors.

FIFA said it would provide an update following consultations with the national associations and would continue to monitor the situation in co-operation with the World Health Organisation.

However, more than two dozen other matches are scheduled to be played around the continent over two match days on March 26 and 31.

“A formal proposal to postpone upcoming matches in the Asian FIFA World Cup 2022 and the Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers will now be shared with the relevant member associations,” said FIFA in a statement.

“For both FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the well-being and health of all individuals involved in football matches remains the highest priority,” it added.
