Qatar 2022: Mikel Arteta influence on Regragui and Morocco revealed

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had an influence on Morocco’s stunning World Cup run to the semi-finals.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui – managing at native side Wydad AC at the time – attended the Spaniard’s 2021 masterclass via zoom on the Gunners’ 2020 FA Cup win.

In that call, Arteta broke down Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City and the behind-closed-doors 2-1 final win over Chelsea.

According to Tribalfootball, Regragui, 47, listened with intent and was clearly taking notes, as just a year later he is managing in a World Cup semi-final.

Morocco are the Qatar World Cup’s dark horses, and topped a group consisting of 2018 finalists and fellow semi-finalists, Croatia, as well as Belgium’s golden generation and an impressive Canadian side.

The North African side then slayed 2010 winners Spain 3-0 on penalties after drawing 0-0 in normal time.

Portugal came up next in the quarters and Morocco pulled off an unlikely 1-0 win to become the first African country to reach the last four of the competition, going one further than Cameroon 1990, Senegal 2002, and Ghana 2010.

Impressively, Morocco have conceded just one goal in the winter tournament and it didn’t even come from an opposition player.

Ronaldo said Morocco are united, adding that he likes the way the Atlas Lions attack and defend.

According to him, he was supporting the North Africans at the 2022 World Cup.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ronaldo said, “I would like them [Morocco] to win the World Cup. Everything is fantastic, how they attack, how they defend, how they are united.

“And I am enchanted by the joy they have given their people and all of Africa, it is a joy that only football can give.”

Morocco will tackle France in the World Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

Walid Regragui’s side head to the game after eliminating Portugal in the World Cup quarter-final.

  • Qatar 2022: What Messi said after guiding Argentina to World Cup final

Qatar 2022: What Messi said after guiding Argentina to World Cup final

Lionel Messi hailed Argentina’s resilience after his majestic display against Croatia ensured a World Cup that began with defeat to Saudi Arabia could end in glory.

Messi recorded a goal and an assist as Argentina posted a 3-0 win over Croatia at Lusail Stadium on Tuesday to reach their sixth World Cup final – a tally only bettered by Germany (eight).

Having opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half, Messi rolled back the years with a remarkable assist as Julian Alvarez completed his brace after the break, beating Josko Gvardiol twice before teeing up a simple finish for the Manchester City forward.

Messi now has the chance to cap his incredible career by lifting football’s biggest prize, a prospect that appeared unlikely when Argentina lost their Group C opener three weeks ago.

The 35-year-old reflected on that surprise defeat after Tuesday’s victory, saying Argentina channelled their disappointment to rescue their tournament.

“I’d say the first game was a hard blow for all of us because we had been unbeaten in 36 matches. To start it like that was a hard blow,” Messi said in a post-match press conference.

“We didn’t think we’d lose to Saudi. It was an acid test, but we’ve shown how strong we are.

“It was very difficult what we did because every match has been a final and this brings a mental load. We were aware if we didn’t win then everything would be more complicated.

“We’ve played five finals and, luckily enough, been able to win them. I hope this will be the same for the final. Internally we were confident we’d make it as we know what we are capable of.

“Yes, we lost the first match because of fine details, but that helped us to be stronger and to grow in the tournament and internally as a squad.”

Croatia bested Argentina’s rivals Brazil in a tense penalty shoot-out in the previous round, but Messi felt the Albiceleste’s intelligence and willingness to “suffer” was the key against experienced opponents.

“I would say this squad, beyond the collective strengths, is very intelligent and wise, we know how to read the game and every moment,” Messi said.

“It’s something the coach said before, it’s a very intelligent squad. We know when to suffer and when to press. We know how to read the games, we know what to do in every moment, how to win.”

Messi has now recorded eight goal involvements (five goals, three assists) in Qatar, moving ahead of Kylian Mbappe (five goals, two assists) prior to France’s semi-final meeting with Morocco, and he is enjoying every minute of the campaign.

“Well, what I can say is I’m enjoying this a lot, I’m feeling really good, I feel strong enough to face every match,” Messi added.

“The previous game was a big sacrifice, it went to extra time, that wasn’t easy. Today we’re tired, but we pooled our strengths to earn this victory.

“Personally, I can say I feel very happy in this whole World Cup, I’m enjoying it a lot, and luckily I am able to help the whole squad make things happen.”

Qatar 2022: Messi’s brilliance sees Argentina through to World Cup final

Brilliant performance by Lionel Messi on Tuesday night ensured that Argentina made it through to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup final.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Messi showed brilliance all through the game, scoring a penalty kick and assisting Julian Alvarez to put the semifinal encounter beyond Croatia.

Alvarez himself produced a moment of brilliance in the match. Released by Messi on the halfway line, the young striker charges through the centre, leaving a trail of defenders in his wake.

A couple of fortunate deflections ensured that he poked the ball home from close range.

TNG reports Argentina is now set to meet either Morocco or France in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup final.

  • Qatar 2022: Soccer pundit, Piers Morgans predicts World Cup winner

Qatar 2022: Soccer pundit, Piers Morgans predicts World Cup winner

Former CNN host and soccer pundit, Piers Morgan, has predicted the outcome of the two semi-final games of the World Cup and the eventual winner on Sunday in Doha.

South American side, Argentina will slug it out with Croatia today in semi-final 1 whilst Morocco will trade tackle with defending champions France for the other semi-final clash on Wednesday.

Defending champions France then plays Morocco in the other semi-final on Wednesday.

The winners of both games will play for the World Cup trophy on Sunday in Doha.

Morgan tweeted on Tuesday: “PREDICTION: Croatia will beat Argentina, France will beat Morocco, and France will beat Croatia in the final to win the World Cup.”

France has won the trophy twice in the past, with 1998 being the first time they lifted it when they hosted the tournament.

Croatia and Morocco are yet to win it, while Argentina has claimed it twice times before.

  • World Cup: Wenger reacts to Harry Kane penalty miss

World Cup: Wenger reacts to Harry Kane penalty miss

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has suggested there was never a chance that Harry Kane would give up penalty duties against France at the World Cup.

The Three Lions bowed out of the competition at the quarter-final stage, losing 2-1 to the defending champions.

However, the match could have ended differently, had Kane not missed from the penalty spot late in the match, having converted a penalty earlier in the game.

“He is so important to England that the dynamics in the squad dictate that nobody at that point felt it was appropriate to offer to take the penalty instead,” Wenger told beIN Sport during their coverage.

“Absolutely gutted,” Kane wrote on Twitter post-game.

“We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport.

“Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament – it means a lot.”

  • Qatar 2022: Buhari hails Morocco ahead of clash against France

Qatar 2022: Buhari hails Morocco ahead of clash against France

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Moroccan national team, the Atlas Lions and the ruler of the country, King Mohammed the VI for making history at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

In a congratulatory message issued by his spokesperson, Malam Garba Shehu on Monday in Abuja, Buhari lauded the Atlas Lions for becoming the fourth team from an African country to ever qualify for the World Cup quarterfinals.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the team is also the first in Africa to win a place in a semi-final at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

According to Buhari, Morocco has made the entire continent proud with their grit and dexterity, giving hope that an African team can indeed win, and should win the ongoing global championship in Qatar.

Buhari commended the team for their skill and teamwork, saying at the same time that this could not have been achieved without the exemplary role of the Moroccan authorities in putting together a formidable team.

TNG reports the Atlas Lions of Morocco qualified for the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a 1-0 defeat of Portugal.

Youssef En-Nesyri headed the historic goal in the 42nd minute when he beat Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa to a cross from Yahya Attiat-Allah.

Ronaldo was again not in the starting line-up but came on in the 51st minute for his 196th cap which equalled the world record from Saudi Arabia’s Badr al-Mutawa.

However, he was unable to force a turnaround for Portugal and left the pitch in tears.

Morocco will now continue on Wednesday when they face title-holders, France for a spot in the 2022 World Cup final.

  • Why Ronaldo won’t play again for Portugal – Ex-Man Utd defender

Why Ronaldo won’t play again for Portugal – Ex-Man Utd defender

Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath believes Cristiano Ronaldo has played his last game for Portugal.

After Portugal’s World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Morocco, McGrath wrote for the Sunday World: “Those who say that the top players don’t care about international football might change their mind on seeing Ronaldo’s tears as he walked down the tunnel last night.

“He may have been earning half a million pounds a week at Manchester United, but those were the tears of a man who knew he had lost a last chance at winning something money cannot buy you: a World Cup winner’s medal.

“Cristiano will be 41 by the time the next circus kicks off in North America in the summer, thankfully, of 2026.

“He won’t be playing then. But would the great man be tempted to give it one last fling for the Euro 2024 Finals, only 18 months away?

“He might and then he might not. First off, he has a Euro medal from six years ago, it was the World Cup one he wanted.

“Secondly, Cristiano will certainly walk if Santos stays on as coach.

“I’d say the relationship between the pair of them is broken beyond repair.

“If a new boss were to come in and say to Cristiano, ‘Look, I want you to give it one more go under these conditions,’ yes, I think he’d be tempted.

“But do Portugal need him? They have cracking young forwards in Goncalo Ramos, Joao Felix, and Rafael Leao.

“Would the great Ronaldo, with all those goals, get in the way of their development, if he was still even a squad man with Portugal.

“Probably. And that’s why a shock defeat to Morocco is likely to be the last we’ll ever see in international football of one of the greatest of them all.”

World Cup exit: I am psychologically destroyed – Neymar

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has posted an emotional message after Brazil’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup at the hands of Croatia on Friday.

He burst into tears after Croatia won on penalties to clinch qualification to the semi-finals of the competition.

“I am psychologically destroyed,” Neymar wrote.

“This was undoubtedly the defeat that hurt me the most, which left me paralyzed for 10 minutes and right after I burst into non-stop tears.

“It’s going to hurt for soooo long, unfortunately. We fought until the end. I am proud of my teammates because there was no lack of commitment and dedication.

“This group deserved it, we deserved it, BRAZIL deserved it. But this was not the will of GOD! It was worth every sacrifice to feel the affection of each one of us from on the field. Thank you all for your support with our national team.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. It’s going to hurt for a long, long time. Thank you for everything my GOD, you have given me everything so I can’t complain.

“Just thank you for taking care of me. All the honor and glory always goes to you, no matter the circumstances.”

Qatar 2022: How France resisted England to reach semi-finals

Reigning champions, France resisted pressure from England on Saturday night to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, after a 2-1 victory.

The holders broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through Aurelien Tchouameni’s long-range strike into the bottom corner.

England made a bright start to the second half, though, and were awarded a penalty after Bukayo Saka was tripped, and Harry Kane fired it into the back of the net.

Olivier Giroud restored France’s lead in the 78th minute with a header from close range and the Three Lions had another chance to equalise from the spot, but Kane blazed that one high over the bar.

With the win, France will face Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday as they edge closer to completing a successful title defence.
