Qatar 2022: How Argentina’s goalie kept Messi’s World Cup hope alive

Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez on Friday night made two wonderful penalty saves in their quarterfinal encounter against The Netherlands to keep Lionel Messi’s hope of winning the World Cup alive.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Martinez saved penalty kicks from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis to secure them a 4-3 shootout win over The Netherlands.

Martinez saves gave his side the advantage, with the Albiceleste edging a 4-3 victory in the shoot-out to set up a semi-final showdown with Croatia.

Lautaro Martinez scored the winning penalty kick to secure the win after their World Cup quarter-final match finished 2-2 after 120 minutes of play.

In a scrappy half-hour of extra time with the scores level, Enzo Fernandez rattled the post in the closing seconds. Martinez and German Pezzella also had efforts blocked or parried away as Argentina desperately pushed for a winner.

The Netherlands had rarely troubled Argentina during the match before substitute Wout Weghorst’s header 10 minutes later sparked them into life. He rolled the ball past goalkeeper Emi Martinez deep into stoppage time to send the game into extra time.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi had superbly set up Nahuel Molina for their first-half opener, threading a sublime pass through the Dutch defence. He then coolly slotted in a penalty kick in the 73rd minute after Denzel Dumfries fouled Marcos Acuna.

Argentina will next face Croatia, who beat Brazil earlier in the day on penalty kicks also, on Tuesday for a place in the final.

World Cup: Brazil crash out of Qatar 2022

Tournament favourites Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup on penalties as Croatia kept their nerve to edge through to the semi-finals.

Croatia, beaten finalists four years ago, scored with all four of their spot-kicks as Rodrygo – taking his team’s first kick – was denied by the brilliant Dominik Livakovic and Marquinhos’ crucial fourth effort struck the post.

As the ball hit the foot of the woodwork and bounced away, Croatia’s players sprinted to celebrate with their goalkeeper, while the Brazil team hit the turf, knowing their dream of a sixth crown had come to an end.

After an engrossing 90 minutes, Tite’s men thought they have won it in extra time when Neymar scored a thumping effort to equal Brazil’s ‘official’ men’s goalscoring record.

But substitute Bruno Petkovic had other ideas, stroking in a 116th-minute equaliser with Croatia’s first shot on target in the match to take the game to the nerve-shredding shootout.

And it was the European side who emerged victorious once more, having done so by the same method against Japan in the last 16, to set up a semi-final meeting with the Netherlands or Argentina on Tuesday.

Manchester United legend, Gary Neville slams Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United legend, Gary Neville has fired shots at Cristiano Ronaldo and asked the Portugal captain to stop sulking.

Neville slammed the 37-year-old for what he described as ‘petulant’ behaviour, warning the Saudi-bound footballer that his career is gradually coming to a scruffy end.

This is coming after Ronaldo was dropped to the bench in Portugal’s 6-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16 at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Ronaldo only came on about 17 minutes to the end of Portugal’s World Cup round of 16 clash on Tuesday.

It was the first first time since Euro 2008 that the former Juventus and Real Madrid man has not started in a major international tournament.

Although manager, Fernando Santos said it was only a strategic approach to the game, the decision may not be unconnected with the 37-year-old’s fallout with the coach.

Ronaldo had fallen out with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag earlier this season. He also had issues at Juventus.

On Tuesday, Neville provided a brutal assessment of his former Manchester United teammate on ITV. Neville said that when Ronaldo had issues with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United people suggested that the Dutch boss was trying to make a move on the superstar and was trying establish his authority.

“This is a manager [Santos] who’s got an unbelievable relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo for eight years,” he said on ITV.

The former Manchester United captain accused Ronaldo’s fans of failing to tell him the truth, insisting that the 37-year-old needs to listen to the truth, “that it’s becoming a little bit of a scruffy end” to his career.

“The petulance, the stomping around, the sulking it’s got to stop because it doesn’t reflect well on him at all.”

The former England international warned that the Portuguese has set for himself a long term legacy which he has protected as “one of the great all time players.

“The Juventus manager wrong? The Manchester United manager wrong? And now is the Portugal manager wrong? There’s three of them that now have done the same thing with him,” Neville said.
