Russia 2018: Peru captain banned from World Cup

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero has been suspended from this summer’s World Cup because of a positive doping test.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency to extend Guerrero’s six-month FIFA ban, which expired this month.

CAS says Guerrero will be banned for 14 months which lasts until January.

The 34-year-old was set to captain Peru at its first World Cup appearance since 1982.

Guerrero tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, at a World Cup qualifying game against Argentina in October.

His lawyers argued the stimulant had not been performance enhancing, and was accidentally consumed in contaminated tea.

BREAKING: NFF releases Super Eagles World Cup list

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday released provisional 30-man World Cup squad for the Super Eagles.

  • Russia 2018: I’m pressured to add players in World Cup squad, says Pinnick

Russia 2018: I’m pressured to add players in World Cup squad, says Pinnick

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Amaju Pinnick has admitted to being under pressure by agents to include players in the final list of the World Cup squad to Russia 2018.

Pinnick, made this known when he appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily while highlighting plans for the global tournament in Russia next month.

He said: “I have pressure from agents, they want their players to be added in World Cup squad.”

The NFF boss, however, maintained that the Super Eagles German Coach, Mr Gernot Rohr, was in a better position to determine who would represent the country in the competition.

Meanwhile, on allegations of favouritism and bribery in the selection of the players, Pinnick described the Super Egles coach as one he could vouch for to not involve himself in such practices.

“Not Gernot Rohr. He is a coach that is very professional. He played for Bayern Munich and has been an Ambassador.

“He is somebody that has an image that is almost untainted. You should understand the pressure. Once a player is excellent on the field, there is no way a coach would not want to get results.

“If a player will give him that result, Gernot Rohr will never cage any player. That, I can tell you,” he said.

Team Nigeria sealed their chances for participating in the World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Zambia in October 2017.

It became the first in Africa to advance to Russia after Arsenal’s Iwobi gave a brilliant performance in the thrilling match.

But despite the success, Pinnick still believes a lot more has to be done to turn Nigeria’s economy around through sports.

  • Russia 2018: How the five favourites are shaping up a month from the World Cup

Russia 2018: How the five favourites are shaping up a month from the World Cup

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia starting in a month, here are five favourites team – who between them have won 13 of the last 20 tournaments — are shaping up:

    – Germany –

Germany’s build-up has been marred by uncertainty as to the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The 32-year-old Bayern Munich man has been on the sidelines since suffering a fractured foot in September.

“I do not think it’s imaginable that I go into such a tournament without match practice,” Neuer admitted last week. His natural replacement is the excellent Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona.

Low has a core of the team that won the 2014 title, and can also call on the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner. Marco Reus will hope to be fit this time too.

After winning all their qualifiers, Germany have failed to win recent friendlies against England, France, Spain and Brazil. Nevertheless, they are the world’s top-ranked side and almost always deliver at the World Cup.

    – Brazil –

In 2014, Brazil’s hopes rested on the shoulders of Neymar, and the back injury he suffered in the quarter-final win over Colombia sparked the meltdown which led to the 7-1 humiliation against Germany in the semis.

Fast forward four years and the nation is again sweating on his fitness. The world’s most expensive player is recovering from a foot injury suffered playing for Paris Saint-Germain in February.

The absence of his PSG colleague Dani Alves with a knee injury is a huge blow too, but Brazil still look far better now under Tite than they did in 2014.

They comfortably topped South American qualifying and there is greater strength in depth. Add to that a kind-looking draw, and Brazil have a genuine chance of a sixth title.

    – Spain –

After poor showings in their last two major tournaments under Vicente del Bosque, Spain are on the up again under his successor Julen Lopetegui.

The former goalkeeper has yet to lose a game in charge, with Spain dropping just two points in qualifying and recently destroying Argentina 6-1 in a friendly.

With Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique still there in front of David de Gea, they have one of the best defences in the business. Further forward, it will be difficult to stop the likes of David Silva and Isco in full flow, and then there is Andres Iniesta.

“We are delighted that he keeps playing this well and are excited about him keeping it up at the World Cup,” Lopetegui recently told FIFA.com.

    – France –

France fell short on home soil at Euro 2016, losing in extra time to Portugal in the final. That increases the pressure on coach Didier Deschamps to deliver this time with a gifted squad.

Deschamps’ team won their qualifying group despite some unconvincing performances, including a goalless home draw with Luxembourg, and the coach has his critics.

To silence them he needs to find the right system to bring the best out of his squad, especially in attack, where Antoine Griezmann is the main man but teen sensation Kylian Mbappe will be one to watch too. This is also surely the stage for Paul Pogba to really step up.

    – Argentina –

After their defeat in the 2014 final, this is Lionel Messi’s big chance to finally get his hands on the trophy.

However, Messi only rescued a shambolic qualifying campaign by scoring a vital hat-trick in Ecuador in the last game to take the team to Russia. There are huge doubts about the rest of Jorge Sampaoli’s squad, and the coach recently said Messi “can carry the team on his shoulders.”

But Sampaoli must also get the best out of the many undoubted talents at his disposal, including Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala, to help his side’s chances of reaching the latter stages.

  • BREAKING: Brazil full-back Dani Alves ruled out of World Cup

Brazil have been dealt a further injury blow ahead of the World Cup following news that defender Dani Alves will miss the tournament in Russia.

The Paris Saint-Germain full-back limped out of Tuesday’s Coupe de France final with a knee injury.

]Original assessments suggested that though the injury would end Alves domestic season he would be ready for the World Cup.

“Following Daniel Alves right knee injury, which occurred yesterday during the French Cup final, the tests performed today showed a high detachment of the anterior cruciate ligament with posterolateral sprain,” a spokesperson for the player said on Wednesday.

It can be confirmed now that following further tests by the Brazil national team’s doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, it has been determined that the former Barcelona star will not recover in time to represent the Selecao this summer.

Alves has been a key figure for Brazil for over a decade and was set to start for Tite’s side as they looked to secure a sixth world title.

He becomes the second Brazil defender to suffer an serious injury in the build-up to the tournament, with Filipe Luis suffering a broken leg while playing for Atletico Madrid back in March.

Tite is likely to be able to call on Neymar, however, with the PSG forward having returned to France in recent weeks as he steps up his recovery from a broken foot.

  • Super Eagles will be ready for pre-World Cup friendlies – Onazi

Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has assured that the Super Eagles would be ready to put in their best in pre-World Cup friendlies against the DR Congo, England and the Czech Republic.

Nigeria host the Leopards of the DR Congo in Port Harcourt on May 28, before a prestige clash with England’s Three Lions at Wembley Stadium in London on June 2.

They will thereafter go on to have an encounter with the Czech Republic on June 6 at the Rudolf Tonn Stadium, just outside Vienna.

“We are not focusing on any particular game, and we are getting ready to face all the teams we have to play before the World Cup. It is the right mentality to approach the games.

“I have been asked several questions about the match against England, but I have been telling people that the England match is very important, just like the other matches that we have to play.

“What is key for us is to get into the right psychological state to confront every opposition that lie ahead, including those that will be waiting at the FIFA World Cup,” Onazi who plays for Trabzonspor of Turkey told thenff.com, the website of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The former FIFA Under-17 World Cup silver medal-winning midfielder dismissed feelings that the team would be over-confident going into Russia 2018 following victories in friendlies against Argentina and Poland.

“There is nothing like over-confidence. What I can say is that we are a very ambitious team and we will always be ready to play any team.

“Yes, we defeated Argentina and Poland, but that has not in any way generated feelings of over-confidence in the camp. We are focused and have our heads on our shoulders.

“For us, humility and hard work will be the winning words going ahead. Our preparation is going on well and we are happy with that.

“At the World Cup, we will come up against different teams with different styles and approaches of play. It is important that we are adequately prepared and we appreciate the games that the NFF has lined up for us,” Onazi, who played for Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil, said.

  • Russia 2018: Manuel Neuer expected to miss the World Cup

German goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer participation at the World Cup is in major doubt after Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes said he is unlikely to play again this season.

Germany’s No 1 Neuer has not played since September after suffering a recurrence of a metatarsal fracture.

He has been back in training with Bayern, but Heynckes has told kicker that he won’t play in the final Bundesliga game of the season on Saturday against Stuttgart – although he left the door open for Neuer to play some part in the German Cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 19.

Neuer said this week: “I cannot say at the moment whether I will make the World Cup. I don’t think it is conceivable that I can go into the World Cup without any match practice.

“It’s going well and I’m feeling good, but I have to make the right decision for me, the team and Germany.

“I want to get better each day and try to get fit as quickly as possible. We’ll see if it’s enough, but I can’t say for certain.”

Nations must submit their final 23-man squads for the World Cup by June 4 and if Neuer is not fit then Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen is likely to take his place.

Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff still thinks Neuer will be involved in Russia.

“I’m still confident and convinced that Manuel will be at the World Cup,” he said.

“In Manuel’s case we’re taking it day by day. For him – as is the case with other injured players – it’s important that they find their rhythm and concentrate in peace so that they return to fitness. The real deadline is June 4, when we have to nominate the final 23-man squad.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the intention to bid for the 2026 World Cup in conjunction with Canada and Mexico.

Trump, while announcing the bid on his Twitter handle, warned against opposition from countries that the U.S. has always supported.

Morocco is currently challenging the North American bid for the first 48-team World Cup in 2026.

The president suggested that the U.S. was considering withdrawing support for countries that are not reciprocating the America’s gestures.

“The U.S. has put together a STRONG bid with Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.

” It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid.

“Why should we be supporting these countries when they don’t support us (including at the United Nations)? Trump tweeted.

The 2018 edition of the World Cup would be hosted by Russia.

On Dec. 2, 2010, FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the winning bids at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich.
